Subject: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Tootler Date: 17 Sep 06 - 04:44 PM I recently had to instal Quicktime to read some files off a CD. I detest Quicktime because of its habit of taking over everything vaguely multimedia. Unfortunately, the video clips that my camera creates seem to need QT to view them. (Filename suffix *.mov) This time I managed to prevent it from opening everything in sight on the computer, but I was unsuccessful with the Browser (Firefox 1.5.0.7). I have had a good look round but could not find anything in the Firefox Plugins file relating to QT. Can anyone either suggest how I can stop QT opening media files downloaded in the browser or, even better suggest an alternative program for viewing *.mov files. The camera is a Kodak, btw. All help appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Mr Red Date: 17 Sep 06 - 04:55 PM have you looked at file associations in Win Explorer? Can't say about firefox - that seems to take over itself anyway. I usually go into the registry to thwart things like that but then I do have two partitions with Windows on so if one flls over I can use the other. & I don't have Flash installed. It is eye candy and conveys no information. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Jeri Date: 17 Sep 06 - 05:05 PM Firefox uses whatever your computer's default applications. Usually, during installation, there's a point where you can select file types Quicktime will open. You will sometimes be asked if you'll give permission for a program you're installiong to 'reclaim' file types. If you check that, you've got a problem. Otherwise, in Windows XP, go to Windows Explorer Find a file of the type you want to change Right click your mouse on it, Select 'Open with' Select 'Choose program' Find the right program, and click on it once to select it Put a check mark in the box underneath that says 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file' Click 'OK', and you should be done |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 17 Sep 06 - 06:20 PM In the version of QT I have installed (7.0.3) there is a preferences menu (Edit/Preferences/Quick Time preferences...) which has a tab for setting associated file types and a tab for browser settings which can stop QT automatically opening files as you download them. Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Bill D Date: 17 Sep 06 - 06:22 PM for a REALLY good player that will play almost anything, try VLC Media Player...free. It is my default for .mov files. |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Bill D Date: 17 Sep 06 - 06:24 PM you DO have to either open VLC (or whatever alternative) and manually use it to open the file, or you must go in and change the default association, as noted above. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: GUEST,Ravenheart Date: 18 Sep 06 - 01:33 PM I've had good luck with the open-source Media Player Classic plus the QuickTime Alternative codec, which is also described on the Wikipedia. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Bill D Date: 18 Sep 06 - 01:37 PM Yes...MPC is a fine program, and I 'could' easily use it instead of VLC....it's mostly a matter of personal choice about the interface. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Tootler Date: 18 Sep 06 - 04:57 PM Thanks for the various suggestions. I have downloaded the VLC Media Player and that seems to do the job, fine. I have got rid of Quicktime and good riddance too. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Snuffy Date: 18 Sep 06 - 07:48 PM I have both MID and MIDI set to open in Windows Media Player, but if I click on a CLICK HERE TO PLAY in the DT, it opens and plays in Quicktime. If I open a midi direct from Windows Explorer, it will open in WMP, but if I click on a link in a HTML page on my hard disk, say CLICK HERE TO PLAY it refuses to open and tells me: To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options ...I then have to click to allow active content, then I get a Security Warning and have to answer "Yes" that I really, really, really do want to run active content. Only then will the bloody thing play - but in f***ing Quicktime, not in WMP. In Win 98 I just clicked on the link and it opened in WMP. What the hell has happened since then? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 18 Sep 06 - 08:14 PM Snuffy Have a look at the QT settings as I described above. On the Browser tab press the button marked MIME Settings... and see if you've got QT set to play the audio files. Mick |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Clinton Hammond Date: 18 Sep 06 - 08:16 PM Use JetAudio... if you have the QT Codex installed, it can play ANY format that QT can, and it's a fantastic meida player..... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 18 Sep 06 - 08:17 PM (You might also look in IE at Tools/Internet Options/Programs tab and press the Manage Add-ons... button to see what you've got set in IE) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 18 Sep 06 - 08:17 PM I agree with Clinton about Jet too - it's my default player (I've removed WMP). Mick |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Snuffy Date: 19 Sep 06 - 07:39 PM Mick, Unticked the MIME settings in Quicktime, and then ticked them in Plug-ins>Options>File types in WMP. That's sorted it. Thanks |

Subject: RE: Tech: Preventing Quicktime taking over From: Amos Date: 19 Sep 06 - 10:44 PM Hell, I find QT handles things just fine, and for the very few exceptions, I have a WMP application. A |
