Santa's been so secretive as to be invisible -- busy multi-tasking to beat the band, But fear not! Your package is being assembled, though mostly in Santa's head. (It's a start!) We have very, very much in common.

This Santa outpost is more northerly than your location, but at least it hasn't snowed yet. Not so much as a flurry or stray flake. (Well, lots of flakes around, but not snow-type ones!) And your Santa has yet to don winter outerwear, although some of the elves are wearing polar fleece inside Christmas Central.

And I'll be keeping the reindeer inside the barn for awhile until the season for random blasting away by drunken hunters passes.

So...all this information has narrowed it down, eh?

Oh, Santa, thank you -- I just knew you were real. And to find that I have much in common with Santa is almost too grand to take in. On such a wonderful morning, too!

Now let's see...no snow, hunting season, Canada...I should have been paying closer attention to weather patterns. Must research further.

Stay warm, enjoying lots of hot chocolate and cookies (or red wine and lasagne, like what I left out for you last Christmas Eve) to keep up your strength. Believe me, I know how taxing all that multitasking can be!

Yours,
Santee Claire

It's got a train in a house on it
They do travel in a strange way across the pond.
And I thought Santa's used reindeer.

BUT THANKYOU SANTA, I'm all excited now!

Santa is so glad you liked the card--not admitting, of course, that it has anything to do with where Santa hangs out between shifts at the North Pole. That covered bridge thing is so that snow won't get on the bridge anyhow--mostly for people who don't travel by reindeer. Santa's still blundering about looking for the perfect present. Stay good, now.

I've been waiting to see you on this thread. I did leave a message for you near the start of the thread and another one further into the thread when I found the first present to put in your parcel. I don't know if you have seen the messages and are keeping admirably quiet to show how good you are and how much you deserve a present from Santa this year, or whether you just haven't seen the messages.

I have been waiting for inspiration to strike on what sort of really special present you would like, and today I know what it is. I just have to hope the toymaker elves still have one in stock. I'm sure they will, but if not I'll use whatever inducements and blandishments I can to get them to whip up another one in time to send off to you.

Your Secretive Santa

Dear Mygoo,

Don't always equate the accents of My Boss and that of the Scout Elf Santa chooses to speak through. The Boss said that Santa could have just as well had me use the UK spelling "Maughm", but "Somerset in their ways". Santa also wants me to throw in the American phrase "Yes Surry Bob!" for the fun of it, but neither one of us come from "those parts" and I refused. I give some of Santa's ideas framed in my speech and some ideas of my own.

Oh No!

Later!

Hi Vectis

Santa has been very poetic this year, but we know that it doesn't matter how verbally gymnastic he is, what he always thinks is - have you been a good girl? And as we elves have reminded him, what ever you do, you are innately good, you don't have to prove yourself in any way, we accept you as you are. So, in the meantime, we thought we'd let you know, Santa has been deep in thought about your Christmas needs. And while he has been thinking, we have been busy.

We hope that soon your ears will ring with Christmas joy!!

Santa's elves.

You talked to me after changing your mudcat name - but I refuse to tell you when, where or how! You will just have to bide your soul in patience and remember to carry on being very good cos I have LOTS of spies out there!

Dear Shy & Secretive Santa,

Have I done anything to offend you, other than asking if we'd ever met? It seems to have quieted you down.

Still no sign of your promised elves. The gnome has become a regular at the nightly sings and has brought his wife on occaision. They started in one night on Nelson Eddy-Jeanette McDonald duets and I had to draw the line. They seem to be behaving to keep access to the free liquor. A possum and a raccoon have also shown up as well as an elf that's not yours, a sprite and a troll. Unfortunately, the neighbor to my right has complained about the loudness of the music and threatened to call the authorities unless they can add a loud bass line to it all, so he can sleep through it like he does when the neighboring kids drive through the complex with their radios blasting. Sounds like possible "treble a'brewin'". Nobody likes high notes any more.

The guy down at the liquor store is starting to look at me funny now that I come in to restock on a more regular basis and I've told him that it wasn't for me, but rather for "the wee folk". Another set of County authorities I might have to deal with.

And all of a sudden my copy of "The Sacred Harp" has gone missing.
Time will tell, I guess.

Do let me know that you're still out there. Drop me a line, with a baited hook if possible. Let me know you're still out there.

Dear Rooall,

I'm very sorry to have cut you short on my last posting without getting to correct spelling and punctuation or giving a proper farewell, but "thereby hangs a tale", as they say in the American South.

I was back down near London in a library after hours having done some research on a rather dysfunctional human-sized computer on matters pertaining to you and your environs when all of a sudden an alarm went off, and I had to shut off the machine in a hurry when I heard footsteps and voices, and quickly find a place to hide. As it turns out, I had to hide on a bookshelf behind some hardback books and sleep there all night until I could sneak out in the morning. Ironically enough, I had to take my refuge and rest to avoid human bondage on the "M" shelf of the fiction section.

Then in the morning at opening time, I had to make my dash for freedom, and much like Frank & Jesse James, make my getaway. I'd have liked to have been able to make my getaway on a horse, like in those classic Westerns like "The Terror Of Tiny Town" (my favorite movie), but we elves have to make do with what's at hand.

You see, while elves can still gain access to just about anywhere,
the danger from alarms and detection systems, as well as from cats, dogs and even in some places, rats, has increased. Why, a late friend of mine was carried off by an eagle, who stole him in mid-flight from an osprey, but that's another story.

We have our own places to hide, ways of entry and travel, and our own secret network of places to eat and stay that the Large Folk must not be allowed to know about, so some fictional names and places will be given to protect us from curious Large Folk who would invade our privacy and lifestyle and even display us and put us to work in carnivals and the like. I'm not free to reveal the location of the Stubby Arms Hotel where I stay or Murray's Surrey Curry-In-A-Hurry, the corner shop where I eat.

So Santas tend to get the Glory while us elves are considered cute and happy whether risking our lives as scouts, in the delivery of messages or slaving in the sweatshops making toys. You only know half of the short story, but I have just goy to lay down and get some REAL sleep now.

Stiffly and Sorely Yours,
Elvish Pressently
Scout-Elf

Only several feories, Threda? That's nothing like enough, as I see that the above posting was your 4,000th as Freda Underhill on Mudcat, and I presume your thoughts are at least as numerous as your words.

I like "very confused and amazed": keep it up, there are more surprises to come.

But that's enough Secret Santa News and Kludges for one day - tell that Sneaky Santette she'd better watch out for her digital crystal balls.

Bessie's Boil
A Lancashire Ballad
Says I to my Missis: "Ba goom, lass! you've something, I see, on your mind."
Says she: "You are right, Sam, I've something. It 'appens it's on me be'ind.
A Boil as 'ud make Job be jealous. It 'urts me no end when I sit."
Says I: "Go to 'ospittel, Missis. The might 'ave to coot it a bit"
Says she: "I just 'ate to be showin' the part of me person it's at."
Says I: "Don't be fussy; them doctors sees sight far more 'orrid that that."

So Missis goes off togged up tasty, and there at the 'ospittel door
They tells 'er to see the 'ouse Doctor, 'oose office is Room Thirty-four.
So she 'unts up and down till she finds it, and knocks and a voice says: "Come in,"
And there is a 'andsome young feller, in white from 'is 'eels to 'is chin.
"I've got a boil," says my Missis. "it 'urts me for fair when I sit,
And Sam (that's me 'usband) 'as asked me to ask you to coot it a bit."
Then blushin' she plucks up her courage, and bravely she shows 'im the place,
And 'e gives it a proper inspections, wi' a 'eap o' surprise on 'is face.
The 'e says wi' and accent o' Scotland: "Whit ye hae is a bile, Ah can feel,
But ye'd better consult the heid Dockter; they caw him Professor O'Neil.
He's special for biles and carbuncles. Ye'll find him in Room Sixty-three.
No charge, Ma'am. It's been a rale pleasure. Jist tell him ye're comin from me."

So Missis she thanks 'im politely, and 'unts up and down as before,
Till she comes to a big 'andsome room with "Professor O'Neil" on the door.
Then once more she plucks up her courage, and knocks and a voice says: "All right."
So she enters, and sees a fat feller wi' whiskers, all togged up in white.
"I've got a big boil," says my Missis, "and if ye will kindly permit,
I'd like for to 'ave you inspect it; it 'urts me like all when I sit."
So blushin' as red as a beet-root she 'astens to show 'im the spot,
And 'e says wi'a look o' amazement: "Sure, Ma'am, it must hurrt ye a lot."
Then 'e puts on 'is specs to regard it, and finally says wi' a frown:
"I'll bet it's a sore as the divvle, espacially whin ye sit down.
I think it's a case for the Surgeon; ye'd better consult Doctor Hoyle.
I've no hisitation in sayin' yer boil is a hill of a boil."

So Missis she thanks 'im for sayin' her boil is a hill of a boil,
And 'unts all around till she comes on a door that is marked: "Doctor Hoyle."
But by now she 'as fair got the wind up, and trembles in every limb;
But she thinks: "After all 'e's a Doctor. Ah moosn't be bashful wi' 'im."
She's made o' good stoof is the Missis, so she knocks and a voice says: "'Oos there?"
"It's me," says ma Bessie, an' enters a room which is spacious and bare.
And a wise-lookin' old feller greets 'er, and 'e too is togged up in white.
"It's the room where they coot ye," think Bessies; and shakes like a jelly wi' fright.
"Ah got a big boil," begins Missis, "and if ye are sure you don't mind,
I'd like ye to see it a moment. It 'urts me, because it's be'ind."
So thinkin she'd best get it over, she 'astens to show 'im the place,
And 'e stares at 'her kindo surprised like, an' gets very red in the face.
But 'e looks at it most conscientious, from every angle of view,
Then 'e says wi' a shrug o' 'is shoulders: "Pore Lydy, I'm sorry for you.
It wants to be cut, but you should 'ave a medical bloke to do that.
Sye, why don't yer go to the 'orsespittel, where all the Doctors is at?
Ye see, Ma'am, this part o' the buildin' is closed on account o' repairs;
Us fellers is only the pynters, a-pyntin' the 'alls and the stairs."

ooh, many thankyous, wonderful Santa & equally marvelous elves. I've never had a pressie that needed grinding and smushing and folding away. I eagerly await the Postie's card in my mail box!

Christmas is definitely coming my way.

Well if (from my experience) it was sent via UPS - it'll be ready when you open the box...

"I am in treeegued" - not up a gum tree, I hope: must be a very uncomfortable place for a subterranean dweller

"and am being very good". As Mae West said, "Goodness Had Nothing to do With It, dearie", but she was referring to diamonds.

You've been good enough so far, and a drover finds it hard to change his mind. But don't expect diamonds from this wild drover who's been to old Cork city (wasn't I pretty?), but not Old Cork Station. My elves have been busy assembling a carefully selected assortment of inappropriate gifts for your delectation and delight down in Dante's seventh circular quay.

I sometimes think I'll settle back in Sydney
It'll never come to pass, I greatly fear
For the elves upon the sleigh
Drive my bonzer dreams away,
Yelling, "Santa, where the hell are all the deer?"

My mind must be going (I'm not sure where to though) - again I fail to put my name to my latest outpouring.

But have no fear, o hairy-footed one, your goodies will soon all be together and ready for packing.
