There is a big article about Derbyshire singer/guitarist songwriter Jack Hudson in this months edition of Maverick In depth interview and nice photographs. Quite amazing - please support this national magazine which is exhibiting interest in the English acoustic scene.

There are also live reviews of Sean Lakeman and Eric Taylor.

In some of the back numbers of Maverick are reviews also of Kirsty McGhee and Matt Martin.

In acoustic magazine this month Eric Bibb, Roger McGuinn are featured as well reviews of Seth Lakeman and Michael Raven's latest books - as well as features from Doyle Dykes, Gordon Giltrap and Martin Simpson.

Perhaps WHS have found that nobody in Poole is interested in music. I daresay I'd be less interested if I had a nice bit of sea to fish in like that, next to my back door.

Like I say I'll do my best.

Perhaps you're right Al.
Not like the hotbed of musical culture that is to be found around Derbyshire!

Best wishes for Christmas & 2007 to all who appreciate Jack's music.

this is the recent correspondence between me and Alan Cackett (Editor of Maverick) on this subject.   I would urge people to check out Maverick's website at least.

(from me to Alan cackett.)
Hi there

there has been some interest shown in the Maverick article about Jack Hudson on the Mudcat website.
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=97152&messages=9

Some people have been in contact with me saying that they can't get Maverick from their local WHS, and they would like to see the article. having said that you haven't even connected with all the Jack Hudson fans on mudcat. Let alone all the other people who like your magazine if they got the chance.

I would not dream of printing the article without your permission, and anyway without the nice photos etc - it lacks something - namely the presentation that a good magazine like Maverick gives it.

I wonder if you could devise a way we can draw peoples attention to the article, and of course your magazine.

Could you make it available online. If not do I have your permission to put the article on mudcat? I have spoke to Neil dalton and he is okay with it - if you are.

I should like Maverick to benefit in some way , and peope to see that you are trying to help along the acoustic scene in England, not just an old fashioned country music mag.

Perhaps if you sent a selection of things people could click on that they would like, and we put them on mudcat - you would get a few more customers.

Mudcat has its roots in America, and there would be a lot of people who would like your magazine if we can tell them about it in the right way.

All the very best and much gratitude for the two articles about me - the live review and album review.

Hi Al
Maverick is not stocked in WH Smith - they want us to pay them £5000 to stock it which would completely bankrupt us. We are available in other newsagents and in HMV shops, Virgin Megastores, independent record shops and Borders. Also the magazine can be purchased online at www.maverick-country.com where we have also listed all the shops that stock the magazine.
Rather than reprint the feature now I'd prefer to see those people who've been asking about the magazine to buy a copy. If they are really keen about the music, then they need to support the magazine, it's the only way I can keep it going and in the end help the independent artists like Jack and yourself and the independent music scene in the UK
Best wishes

Alan Cackett

Alan,
Could I put this correspondence onto mudcat as it will inform and put your point of view?

all the best

al

Yes, of course you can. the way I see it is as a three-way thing. Artists need exposure. Maverick can give that exposure. But the music fans must support magazines like Maverick otherwise the exposure just won't be there. The magazine doesn't make money, it costs me money every month to publish it
But I'm passionate about music.
Best wishes
Alan Cackett
Maverick

This is certainly a must read for anyone who appreciates Jack's music.
I have been privileged to see him in concert many times and he is undoubtedly one of the best singer/songwriters around.

I would agree. The article underlines the great seriousness with which Jack has applied himself to his work.

It remains one of the most baffling mysteries to me why this man of immense talent and achievemwnt is excluded from all folk programmes, all festival bills in the UK.

this is the flip side of tolerating the sheer crapness and crassness of the view that folk music is about some sort of spurious tradition - rather than what the people of our nation get up to in folk clubs. sheer middle class bloody snobbery and exclusivity.

Still they say Van Gogh couldn't sell a picture in his lifetime. One day the world will be kicking itself for having missed out on the truly great Jack Hudson.

"One day the world will be kicking itself for having missed out on the truly great Jack Hudson".

Hope that day's a long way ahead, Al.

In the meantime, why don't these people wake up?? This guy must be the world's best 'best-kept secret'. He may not go for the 'Warm Fuzzy' approach, but his songs are finely-crafted and thought-provoking, and his artistry in performance is second to none.

IMHO.
