I see Bush intends to send more troops to Iraq, [more lambs to the slaughter?]. When will he realise he is chasing a lost cause. Why persist in this debacle.
My hope is that Blair sees sense and will not follow Bush further into the mire that is Iraq............
Bring the troops home, NOW!

Were there not elections in the U.S. a month ago where a majority of the people spoke up against the war and elected representatives that would lead the way in ending this madness and bring back the troops?

Realistically speakin', Bush has looked around at what he has done and thought to himself, "Oh sh*t, I am a stupid as these folks say" and so he's trying to salvage anything... Yeah, journalists talk about how he is just a committed soul doing what he thinks is the right thing to do...

...but bottom line, Bush is clueless and looking at the very distinct possibility that hitorians will one day pronounce him the worst president ever he thinks that if he could only get a victory in Iraq then these historians will at the very least get him in the middle of the pack...

...which, of course, just shows again how dumb he actually is because Iraq is a lost cause... It was lost before "shock and awe" but the problem is that after the Bill Clinton impeachement thing that the Dems would be viewed as vengefull folks if they tried to impeach Bush for getting over a half million folks killed for purely political purposes???

If ever there was a president who needed to be removed from office, it's this creep...

He puzzled once about why the local leaders didn't appear and why they didn't take charge of their own destiny. This demonstrates an abysmal ignorance of what he was about in invading an Arabic country in the first place, where the will of Allah colors every agreement and every wish. If you say to someone "I'll see you tomorrow" his automatic response is "In'sh'allah!" (If Allah wills it). If you thank someone, they reply, "Do not thank me, thank Allah!" Taking charge of one's own destiny in such a culture is a rare and usually heretical event. But This was much too deep an idea for the Commander in Chief to bother worrying his ole self about.

However, there's this icky little planet over in the Large Magellanic Cluster. You may want to have a chat with the life-forms there about this matter.

So it goes.

Those kind of responses Amos quoted are more or less the same you'd get from a lot of people, especially older people, in places like Ireland.

"I'll see you next week, please God"

"Thank God I was able to help you."

Taking charge of one's own destiny in such a culture is a rare and usually heretical event.

That seems to me stretching it a bit. When someone takes up arms against a foreign invader - however mistakenly that might be - I think I'd call that "taking charge of one's own destiny". Wherever they happened to live.

People who live in an essentially secular society will never grasp the thought processes of people who don't...and vice versa. Either way is good in some ways and not in others.

"Bush" is a puppet. The CIA's nickname for Cheney is "Edgar", as in Edgar Bergen. You have to be a sentient being to have free will, and the Chimp can only move his mouth when somebody puts words in it.

"Taking charge of one's own destiny".

The American people should think long and hard about the meaning of that phrase. Not so long ago we were assured by many on Mudcat that the ballot box had given them the oppertunity to rid themselves of this evil regime.
Now Bush declares that he needs more young men for the slaughter while the Democrats sit back congratulating themselves on their "election victory"

It should be clear to everyone....GUEST has told us often enough...that both parties work for the same boss.
The only difference as far as I can see is that the Dems are a bit more cowardly than the Pubs.

People power made things happen over Civil Rights and Vietnam and if America wishes to rid itself of its National disgrace, the same tactics need to be employed.

But times have changed since the 60's and 70's and I fear that the spirit of justice has gone from peoples hearts.
Capitalism has ground us down into a world of slavery where the need to work almost continuously to provide the things we are told are necessary to make our lives complete.

In the words of the lovely Iris Dement..."We got no time to cry"..Ake

YOW!! You right Ake!

I myself work constantly and still live paycheck to paycheck. I get pissed at the f*cked up situation out there but have given up on any resolution. I've lost any confidence I once had in the holy voting process (too many 50-50% elections lately). I have become a mechanized, eating, sleeping, bill paying citizen drone. I used to be fairly creative but haven't written a song in two years and bypass the nightly news in favor of "Raymond" re-runs. Whatever they're doing is working!!

I give an A+ rating to the present Administration.

Nope. They've set their goals and achieved 'em Kendell.

Successfully removed any means for the governed to get them to do the right thing...or at least not to do wrong things. They now have free rein to move about the world.

I'm afraid we've lost any control we may have had over them now and the voters have been removed from the checks and balances.

Bush is surrounded by YES men who afraid to challenge the dictator.
You cannot introduce a form of government IE. democracy to a people who have no concept of the workings of such a democracy and expect them to just get on with it.
The Iraqi people are so divided that it's very hard to see a way out of this one.
If the soldiers were brought home the situation will get even worse,
If only there was a brave United Nations force capably of cleaning up this mess.

I would think it would be a jolly idea to scan the whole region with metal detectors and knock off every ammo and weapons cache they find.

Logistically overwhelming, given the size of the force. Rumsfeld should have paid attention to the Powell doctrine when he had a chance. Between him and his ugly super-ego Cheny and THEIR ugly superego Rubbish, the entire nation has been in the clutch of a raving gang of psychos whose warmest heart comes alive at the notion of slamming and conquering. Sick-os.

Funny, Rumsfeld understood the balance of power in the Mideast when he worked for Daddy. Heard a couple interesting quotes from his from the Gulf War as to why the US didn't eliminate Saddam Hussein then -- Rumsfeld himself called it a bad idea.

So then he changes his mind and he and the whole mess o' Neocons insist on shoving this war down our (the electorate's) throat AND he insists it can be done with more technology but smaller fighting forces , laughs when the basic infrastructure of the country is destroyed and then wonders why Iraqi's aren't particularly happy with the US since they have no jobs, no schools, no electricity, no water, no food, no safe place to be -- and definitely no freedom (the major freedom is of necessity the freedom to be SAFE) or democracy.

But, then again, what do Republicans know about democracy except how to manipulate it to their own ends?

HOW OLD IS THE GRAND CANYON? PARK SERVICE
WON'T SAY —

Orders to Cater toCreationists Makes
National Park Agnostic on GeologyWashington, DC —
Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to
give anofficial estimate of the geologic age of
its principal feature, due topressure from Bush
administration appointees.

Despite promising a
promptreview of its approval for a book claiming
the Grand Canyon was created byNoah's flood
rather than by geologic forces, more than three
years later noreview has ever been done and the
book remains on sale at the park, according to
documents released today by Public Employees for
EnvironmentalResponsibility (PEER).

"In order to avoid offending religious fundamentalists, our
National = ParkService is under orders to suspend
its belief in geology," stated PEERExecutive
Director Jeff Ruch. "It is disconcerting that the
officialposition of a national park as to the
geologic age of the Grand Canyon is'no comment.'
"In a letter released today, PEER urged the new
Director of the National ParkService (NPS), Mary
Bomar, to end the stalling tactics, remove the
book from sale at the park and allow park
interpretive rangers to honestly answerquestions
from the public about the geologic age of the
Grand Canyon.

PEER is also asking Director Bomar
to approve a pamphlet, suppressed since 2002 by
Bush appointees, providing guidance for rangers
and other interpretivestaff in making
distinctions between science and religion when
speaking topark visitors about geologic issues.

In
August 2003, Park Superintendent Joe Alston
attempted to block the sale at park bookstores of
Grand Canyon: A Different View by Tom Vail, a
bookclaiming the Canyon developed on a biblical
rather than an evolutionary timescale. NPS
Headquarters, however, intervened and overruled
Alston. To quietthe resulting furor, NPS Chief
of Communications David Barna told reportersand
members of Congress that there would be a
high-level policy review ofthe issue.

According
to a recent NPS response to a Freedom of
Information Act requestfiled by PEER, no such
review was ever requested, let alone conducted
orcompleted.Park officials have defended the
decision to approve the sale of GrandCanyon: A
Different View, claiming that park bookstores are
like libraries, where the broadest range of views
are displayed.

In fact, however, both lawand
park policies make it clear that the park
bookstores are more likeschoolrooms rather than
libraries. As such, materials are only to
reflectthe highest quality science and are
supposed to closely support approvedinterpretive
themes. Moreover, unlike a library the approval
process is veryselective.

Records released to
PEER show that during 2003, Grand Canyonofficials
rejected 22 books and other products for bookstore
placement whileapproving only one new sale item
— the creationist book.Ironically, in 2005, two
years after the Grand Canyon creationistcontroversy erupted, NPS approved a
new directive on "Interpretation andEducation (
Director's Order #6) which reinforces the posture
that materials on the "history of the Earth must
be based on the best scientific
evidence available, as found in scholarly sources
that have stood the test of scientific peer review
and criticism [and] Interpretive and
educationalprograms must refrain from appearing
to endorse religious beliefs explainingnatural
processes."

"As one park geologist said, this is
equivalent of Yellowstone National Park selling a
book entitled Geysers of Old Faithful: Nostrils of
Satan,"   Ruch added, pointing to the fact that
previous NPS leadership ignored strongprotests
from both its own scientists and leading
geological societiesagainst the agency approval
of the creationist book. "We sincerely hope
thatthe new Director of the Park Service now has
the autonomy to do her job."

A young college student I know has already spent more than a couple of years in Iraq, and he is in the Montana National Guard. The National Guard should not even be sent out of the country. He was just called up to do some maneuvers with people from other states, which has not been done before, and I'm afraid Bush is going to send our guardsmen back to Iraq. How shameful to set people up again to be sitting ducks. We voted for change. Get us out of Iraq.
