Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: FreddyHeadey Date: 26 Dec 15 - 11:28 AM Pogues - Fairytale of New York from the BBC 'Soul Music' series... -so it isn't all about the song, it's about other people's relationship with the song too. Worth a listen I think. "The tragi-comic tale of love gone sour and shattered dreams eloquently depicted in the Christmas classic Fairytale of New York is the focus of this edition of Soul Music. James Fearnley, pianist with The Pogues recounts how the song started off as a transatlantic love story between an Irish seafarer missing his girl at Christmas before becoming the bittersweet reminiscences of the Irish immigrant down on his luck in the Big Apple, attempting to win back the woman he wooed with promises of 'cars big as bars and rivers of gold'...." http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06s9d1h |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: GUEST,Nicholas Waller Date: 25 Dec 06 - 06:41 PM As I remember it (from a TV docco a while ago), Cait O'Riordan was the bassist in the band while The Pogues were first developing the song, and so she sang on an early version of it. By the time it came to record it properly, which was a year or so later, O'Riordan had left the band and it wasn't clear who was going to do the female part. Steve Lillywhite, their new producer, told them that he thought it suited his wife's voice (ie Kirsty MacColl) and could he try it out with her? So he took a tape home and had her record with it, and the band thought it was great when he brought the result back to them, and the rest is history. |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Effsee Date: 25 Dec 06 - 12:38 PM Wolfgang, maybe Ruth Archer has the rights of it regarding "the original FToNY featured Cait O'Riordan", I'm not sure, but it was with KM that I first heard the song...which seems an awful long time ago now! |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Wolfgang Date: 25 Dec 06 - 12:14 PM Effsee, was it written for her? Or did she just sing it first? Wolfgang (curious) |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Murray MacLeod Date: 24 Dec 06 - 07:57 PM Always nice to see Shane McGowan resurfacing, but to be honest, the performance in the video in the initial post doesn't hold a candle to some of the other videos of FTONY on YouTube which feature Kirsty McColl. This one ids just about the pick of them imo |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Anne Lister Date: 24 Dec 06 - 07:01 PM Interesting prog tonight on BBC3 about the recording of the song and its history. |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Ruth Archer Date: 24 Dec 06 - 04:38 PM god - I hope you're right. Actually, the original FToNY featured Cait O'Riordan... only sayin'. |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Dec 06 - 04:19 PM "He's unlikely to produce anything in future" I can't see why not - here's - "Shane's yule blog: sleeping, gigging and holding court", written this week, and still pretty eloquent: "Some of the touring party are as bickering and bitchy as ever from time to time, but that's to be expected with the group history. These days, it's all carefully managed into a productive, well-oiled machine, pun intended. The cracks are smoothed over and the old animosities aren't flattered with the opportunity to make waves. Once we're on that stage we become the troubadours of old, and we make our joyous noise." If he can write like that he can still write songs. |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Effsee Date: 22 Dec 06 - 09:52 PM Actually Wolfgang, that is not the original. That was with Kirsty MacColl. Michael Morris, I think there is more to come from the man, he's not dead yet!! |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Goose Gander Date: 22 Dec 06 - 09:33 PM I have every record he made, including the Nips, and I love it all. I only wish he had written more songs so that there would be more to enjoy. |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: GUEST,opening poster Date: 22 Dec 06 - 08:48 PM To the contrary Ruth he is very likely to write new songs in the future. I hope you enjoy them. |
Subject: RE: Fairytale of New York From: Ruth Archer Date: 22 Dec 06 - 08:18 PM MichaelMorris, Shane has written loads of songs. The Pogues' albums are full of his stuff - insightful, well-crafted, original songs which are evidence of a unique talent. Maybe you already know that - it's hard to tell from your message. But if you don't know the full canon of his work, it's well worth seeking out. He's unlikely to porduce anything in future, which is incredibly sad. I wish he'd write some more songs, too. |
