23 July On this day in 1759 Work started on the Royal Navy’s 104-gun battleship HMS Victory, at Chatham, Kent, built from the wood of 6,000 trees, 90 per cent of which were oak. The name Victory was chosen in October 1760. In 1759, the Seven Years' War was going well for Britain; land victories had been won at Quebec and Minden and naval battles had been won at Lagos and Quiberon Bay. It was the Annus Mirabilis, or Wonderful Year.

Come cheer up, my lads! 'tis to glory we steer,
To add something more to this wonderful year;
To honour we call you, as free men not slaves,
For who are so free as the sons of the waves?

Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men;
We always are ready, steady, boys, steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

The music of HEART OF OAK    was written in 1759 by composer William Boyce, the lyrics by actor David Garrick, for Garrick's pantomime Harlequin's Invasion, to which others contributed as well. The pantomime was first performed on New Year's Eve of that year at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London.

The oak in the song's title refers to the wood from which British warships were generally made during the age of sail. The "Heart of oak" is the strongest central wood of the tree. Wikipedia

23 July1940 In wartime Britain the name “ Home Guard” was adopted by the Local Defence Volunteers, the military force set up to form Britain’s last line of defence against the expected German invasion. It soon became popularly known as the Dad’s Army because most of its volunteers were older men who were considered too old to form part of the regular British Army.

July 13, 1901 Death of black Australian heavyweight boxer Peter Jackson after a distinguished boxing career

Peter Jackson (boxer) from Wikipedia     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Jackson_(boxer)

DUSKY PETE     https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/a-song-about-peter-jackson-from-1892.717483/
Peter's skin may be against him,
Blacker than a rainy night
But the blokes that stood against him
Learned too well they'd had a fight

There's that murky gent from Boston
He don't want no more o' Pete
Then McAuliffe ran across him,
Do him? Yes like thrashing wheat!

Then before him Cardiff stands up
Just to get it in the neck
Smith had hardly put his hands up
When he got a sudden check

Smith, who carried Cockney money,
By the hundred thousand pounds,
Proved to Pete as sweet as honey
Punched out in a brace of rounds!

Fair and square he made his record,
Always treated people right,
Be his skin black, blue or chequered,
Scratch him and you'll find him white.

Dignified you'll find him standing,
In the head set of the dance,
No concessions he's demanding,
Give the coloured gent a chance!

"C**ns is C**ns", Well that's amusing
Now admit that pugs is pugs
Men who make their living bruisin'
Got no right to put on lugs.

When a black man isn't lacking'
In the strength, the head, the heart,
When he's got the proper backing,
He should get a level start.

Colour doesn't cut no figure,
When it comes to make a fight.
Then the game and clever n****r
Is the equal of the white.

Men who've got no social ratin'
You will find eight times in nine,
Are the first to do the pratin'
First to draw the colour line.

All admit that Pete's a fighter,
Well, I claim, that settles it.
If his skin was ten times lighter,
'Twouldn't change the case a bit.

Straight-haired pugs may keen on sneerin'
Jackson's coming just as hard,
He is bound to get a hearin'
Dusky Pete cannot be barred.

8 July; on this date in 1882, eccentric composer Percy Grainger was born in Melbourne.

Grainger became infected with the ideas of the Folk Song Society and had a friendship with Gervase and Winefride Elwes, residents of Brigg. The family had established the North Lincolnshire Musical Competitions, and added a folk song class to the 1905 competition. There Grainger was introduced to Lincolnshire singers and their songs, notably Joseph Taylor and Brigg Fair.

Salamanca/Arapiles continued!

John Tams, playing the part of Rifleman Hagman in Sharpe's Sword, sang;

Let kings and tyrants come and go
I'll stand adjudged by what I know
A soldiers life I'll ne'er gainsay
Over the hills and far away

O'er the hills and o'er the main
Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain
King George commands and we obey
Over the hills and far away.

22 July On this day in 1812 the Battle of Salamanca took place in west Spain in which the Duke of Wellington was victorious over the French in the Peninsular War.
OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY
A version of the lyrics by George Farquhar for his play The Recruiting Officer from 1706.

Our 'prentice Tom may now refuse
To wipe his scoundrel Master's Shoes,
For now he's free to sing and play
Over the Hills and far away.
Over the Hills and O'er the Main,
To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
The Queen commands and we'll obey
Over the Hills and far away.

The battle features in Sharpe's Sword by Bernard Cornwell, in which Richard Sharpe helps Wellington bring the French to battle by feeding a known French spy false information.

DOWN AT STOCKWELL STATION
Written by Henry Peacock
Tune; The Keeper

The lookout called, He's left his home!
Under his coat he carries a bomb
To blow us all to Kingdom come
Down at Stockwell station

Chorus; Are you armed? With a gun!
Can you shoot? Anyone!
Like the young man whose life was undone
Down at Stockwell station

Cressida Dick was in command
She held his future in her hand
He must be stopped! was her demand
Down at Stockwell station

Nobody heard a warning shout
Before two men began the rout
Loudly, gunshots they rang out
Down at Stockwell station

Who could have guessed what lay in store?
He hadn't broken any law
And yet he lay dead on the floor
Down at Stockwell station

Sir Ian Blair hides behind his lies
We must keep London safe, he sighs
Meanwhile, a mother softly cries
Down at Stockwell station

BONEY WAS A WARRIOR

15 July On this day in 1815, Napoleon surrendered at Rochefort to Captain Maitland of the ship Bellerophon (familiarly known as the Billy Ruffian). Maitland’s orders from the Admiralty were to take Napoleon to the nearest port in England, pending a formal decision on the French warlord’s fate. Thus, the Bellerophon set sail for Torbay.

Boney was a warrior Away, a-yeah
A warrior and a terrier Jean Francois

Boney fought the Russians Away, a-yeah
The Russians and the Prussians Jean Francois

Moscow was a-blazing Away, a-yeah
And Boney was a-raging Jean Francois

Boney went to Elba Away, a-yeah
Boney he came back again Jean Francois

Boney went to Waterloo Away, a-yeah
There he got his overthrow Jean Francois

Then they took him off again Away, a-yeah
Aboard the Billy Ruffian Jean Francois

He went to Saint Helena Away, a-yeah
There he was a prisoner Jean Francois

Boney broke his heart and died Away, a-yeah
Away in Saint Helena Jean Francois

14 July On this day in 1789, the Bastille, the state prison in Paris, was stormed by the citizens of Paris and burnt to the ground at the start of the French Revolution.

More from Marat/Sade!

We've got new generals, our leaders are new
They sit and they argue and all that they do
Is sell their own colleagues and ride upon their backs
Or jail them, or break them, or give them all the ax

Screaming in language that no one understands
Of the rights that we grabbed with our own bleeding hands
When we wiped out the bosses and stormed through the wall
Of the prison they told us would outlast us all

Also Quatorze Juillet (July 14), a song written in 1940 by the Swiss composer Gilles Jean-Villard for occupied France and sung in 1943 by the French artist Renée Lebas.
