Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: Rick Fielding Date: 31 Oct 02 - 08:26 PM So AG has a LOT of Nationals eh? Well let's see. I've always used picks on the index and middle finger. I started out using them for Bluegrass banjo pickin'. Started playin' guitar that way after a while as well, when I wasn't using a flat pick. HOWEVER.....if these are comfortable by tomorrow afternoon I'm goin' back to the lady and get one put on my ring finger as well. Makes for a completely different style (while still keepin' my previous one) I played for about two hours tonight at a friend's place while Heather took their kids trick or treating and as much as it slows me down quite a bit, I can see that it might work with a bit of effort....and boy would I like to stop having to use "inferior metal" picks. I used to like the hardness of Nationals, and even the Dunlop .25s are too soft. The artificial nails are very smooth and seem pretty strong. Plus the installer-lady is only a couple of blocks away. Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: catspaw49 Date: 31 Oct 02 - 08:12 PM Karen never wears make-up or does anything just for her. About q year ago though she started with the nail thing and we have them done every two weeks or so.....makes her kinda' happy.....me too because she does so little for herself and so much for all the rest of us. Anyway, once you start it IS important to keep up with the process or they get weak and break of which can be pretty painful. I lve the colors and like her doing the seasonal things (littlle Christmas trees, Jack-O-Lanterns, etc.). The funniest one is a temperature sensitve color they refer to a "Mood Polish." It changes color with temperature and also glows in the dark. Hope it works out for you Rick. I read somewhere that Arlo had once bought a huge shitload of Nationals knowing that one day............ Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: katlaughing Date: 31 Oct 02 - 07:22 PM Forgot to ask what colours you had them painted? Did you get any of those fancy stripes or little strips of gold or tiny gems set in them?*bg* |
Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: Murray MacLeod Date: 31 Oct 02 - 07:11 PM Just so's we get it straight, Rick, I assume these are built-up acrylic nails we are talking about (with, perhaps, a glued-on tip)? You will come to love them. Trust me. Murray |

Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: katlaughing Date: 31 Oct 02 - 06:39 PM Watch them and possibly have them off for short periods. I've heard they keep your real nails from breathing (since they are just skin, I think it's like gluing your skin, right?) I've also heard that anyone with circulation problems should not have them. One of the first things we were taught to check in EMT classes were a person's fingernails to see if they were cyanotic. Since you've only had a couple done, there'd be no problem.*bg* I remember you mentioned this a long time ago. Hope they work and have fun! Congrats on another provacative thread title!:-) kat |
Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: Bobert Date: 31 Oct 02 - 06:10 PM Yo, Rick. What nails did you have replaced. I sometimes like to use my 1st finger to strum down and pick back with the 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd. But I notice when I play like this it kills off the nail on the 1st finger. Just curious which two you replaced? I'm out with the "Bumb Thumb Blues" right now but I hear youz a purdy good picker and hope to hook up with you at some point in time and trade some licks. Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: DonMeixner Date: 31 Oct 02 - 06:08 PM Rick, Look real close to Roy Williamson in those Corries Videos I gave to you. You'll notice that he is wearing some type of nail enhancement. Other than that the only person I know for sure that is artificially enhanced is Dolly Parton. Let me know how they work for you. Don PS: I have a friend who has one on her thumb. Thats all she uses and she like them just fine. |
Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: Ebbie Date: 31 Oct 02 - 05:57 PM I know a blues man here who has them installed whenever he's going to so some heavy picking. No problems. (At a workshop once he showed us some fancy stuff then said, And if you can do it in the next 30 minutes I'm going to cry- it took me 30 years.) |
Subject: RE: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: Wesley S Date: 31 Oct 02 - 05:42 PM I had always heard that the fake nails destroy or weaken the real nails underneath. Has anyone else heard that ? Lets hope not. |

Subject: They Finally Nailed Me This Time! From: Rick Fielding Date: 31 Oct 02 - 05:32 PM Oh man are these friggin' things uncomfortable! After resisting for a number of years I finally got two artificial nails put on an hour ago. Jeri (who got hers a little while ago) scared the bejesus out of me by telling me to make sure that the nail-lady wasn't a "hole driller"(!!) So I asked her if she employed that method and she gave me the kind of look that said "You ARE a virgin, aren't you"? She assured me that the only nail applicators who did that were sadists.....and I'd come to the right place. Not bad really.....10 bucks for two. Hopefully to replace my thirty five year 'pick habit', 'cause the picks today feel funny....not at all like the old Nationals that I loved. Oh well, I'll see. My first gig is a concert Saturday night in Barrie Ontario, and if I can't get used to them I'll just file 'em off. Anybody else using these things? Cheers Rick |
