Subject: RE: BS: They do Something about US guns From: Jackaroodave Date: 23 Feb 18 - 07:25 PM Greg F: "Laughing at the NRA or their Republican enablers and stooges won't accomplish shit." You know, Greg, I think the NRA are quite vulnerable to popular ridicule: 1. The absurdity of some of their positions to ordinary people once they are brought to their attention. 2. The enormous gap between the members' hyper-macho posturing and their actual fear-driven paranoia. 3. The similar gap between their professions of patriotism and their role as corporate lickspittles in corrupting our congress--another clown car. What are they going to do if they become a universal figure of fun, kill everybody? I don't think anyone believes they can be defeated by slapping them around with a joke book, but historically, savage ridicule has not been not a weapon to be despised. |
Subject: RE: BS: They do Something about US guns From: Jackaroodave Date: 23 Feb 18 - 07:05 PM I wanted to see if there was an objective correlative of my feeling that there was a shift in the "national mood," so I got a copy of the weekend edition of USA Today. I suppose it's on sale all weekend, so if you have a chance, pick up a copy and take a look at the editorial cartoon. I think Donuel particularly would include it in a scrapbook of the succinct, accurate, and anti-bot. Anyway, when I got home, I went on line to check out their aggregation of cartoons from various papers during February, and I was gobsmacked. There is some pabulum about Billy Graham, but persevere to #11 for the zinger. If you were born before, say, 1960, and can make it to #36, it should, ahem, blow your mind. Maybe I'm just out of touch, but what gets me is that this is a nation-wide collection not by the Huffington Post, but by a rag that calls itself "America's Newspaper." When I try to create a link, it just goes to a 404 error page, but if you google {february political cartoons site:usatoday.com} (without {}) you should be in easy reach. The first page features an obese crested warrior. |

Subject: RE: BS: They do Something about US guns From: Jackaroodave Date: 23 Feb 18 - 03:42 PM Peripherally, West Virginia teachers statewide walked out (technically not a strike) yesterday and today, because they haven't had a raise in years, their wages are 48th in the nation, about $13,000 below the national average ($45,600 vs 58,300), and their health care program is utterly shoddy. And now some . . . moron (with apologies to all other morons) wants them also to stand on the firing line. Come to think of it, I doubt their employers like the idea of pistol-packing teachers very much either |
Subject: RE: BS: They do Something about US guns From: Backwoodsman Date: 23 Feb 18 - 03:22 PM I'd guess that those who think having an armed teacher in a classroom would be a good thing if a gunman bursts in, have never been present when a real-life fire-fight breaks out in a confined space full of people. It doesn't take a great deal of imagination... |

Subject: RE: BS: They do Something about US guns From: keberoxu Date: 23 Feb 18 - 01:45 PM I am forcibly reminded of "All In The Family," the TV sitcom from years ago. The topic was the hijacking of passenger plane flights, and there was this fake reality-show called The Man In The Street. What happened was that Archie Bunker found himself in the crosshairs. So Archie Bunker went on camera and stated, What you gotta do is you gotta arm all your passengers . . . this was supposed to be comedy . . . |

And all the pupils' guns ready on their desks. Can you imagine lining one's class up for lunch, and sounding like Joyce Grenfell? "Now everyone stand, shoulder your AK47 and make a lovely neat line at the door." "Er... David, pleeease do NOT poke little Suzy from behind with your weapon." |

Using a different example there are lots of violins out there and 95% of the players of those violins - shouldn't. Only people who have the discipline to devote 10,000 hours of their life practicing ever become masters. (like old dude) The remainder of players are in it for the fun but make lots of mistakes. At least those wincing mistakes are not deadly. With guns when mistakes are impulsive the result is madness. I'm sure we have all sick and tired of gun-violins. I'll get me hat. |

Subject: RE: BS: They do Somthing about US guns From: Donuel Date: 22 Feb 18 - 01:28 PM Jack that is a viral T shirt for the ages. You have talent. Do you draw or cartoon or just have a visual graphic mind? LaPierre used his address to the conservative conference CPAC to hit out at anti-gun campaigners, who, led by young survivors of the shooting, have attempted to make political headway in the last week. “They fantasise about more laws stopping what other laws have failed to stop,” the National Rifle Association executive vice-president said. “So many existing laws were ignored.” He added: “They don’t care if their laws work or not. They just want to get more laws to get more control over people. But the NRA, the NRA does care.” LaPierre also hit out at the “breathless national media” which he said was “eager to smear the NRA in the midst of genuine grief”. Related: Donald Trump stands by proposal to give teachers guns: 'Attacks would end!' Elites want to “eliminate our firearms freedoms and eradicate all the individual freedoms”, he said. “They hate the NRA, they hate the second amendment, they hate individual freedom.” It had been unclear whether LaPierre would appear at the conservative conference outside Washington and his name was initially kept off the agenda to protect him from media scrutiny. The NRA often prefers to stay out of the media spotlight in the wake of a major shooting. Pushing the same agenda on school security as Donald Trump, he claimed schools were “wide open targets”. “Evil walks among us and God help us if we don’t protect our schools,” he said. Trump doubled down on his proposal to address school shootings by giving some teachers guns on Thursday, tweeting that it would be a “great deterrent” to killers. More details soon ... |
