Subject: RE: BS: California: where to go? what to see? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Jun 09 - 06:35 PM San Francisco, my favorite city. Harris Steakhouse, 2100 Van Ness, San Francisco. The best steaks bar none. Dinner Menu- Harris Restaurant Motel, an oldie but a goodie, about $60, on 2850 Van Ness, near Lombard, San Francisco. Two stories of rooms above parking, in a "U" arrangement off the street. Close (one block) to the cable car that runs from downtown to the wharf. Many reasonable eateries close by, to make up for the fairly expensive Harris. Lots to do and see in San Francisco. Don't miss the old mission Saint Francis de Asis. Dating from the 1790s, it is the oldest building in San Francisco. A walk up Nob Hill if you need exercise. And in spite of the 1906 fire, there are many pre-fire houses. Victorian houses near Lafayette Square, and Alamo Square ('postcard row').The 'old money' Pacific Heights neighborhood. North Beach for City Lights Bookstore, and a variety of little businesses. Gay Pride activities start June 14, so you will miss that. For events, check SF Gate: Events also Only in San Francisco: Entertainment and places Too much to see! |
Subject: RE: BS: California: where to go? what to see? From: Ebbie Date: 14 Jun 09 - 02:41 PM I agree with Amos- there's an awful lot to see and do in the San Diego area. The San Diego zoo is one of them, although I actually prefer the San Diego Wild Animal Park some miles away. It's an open 'zoo' where animals mix and mingle with various other species- the viewing 'platform' is a train that travels the perimeter. On San Francisco's waterfront there are also many mustn't-miss points. If you like driving the 101 (I, for one, do), go on up north toward the Oregon border and spend some time in the Redwoods. Wonderfully timeless atmosphere. I too would cut the driving time to a minimum unless you resonate to the vast scope of California's length, its changing terrain and resulting different climates and vegetation. |

Subject: RE: BS: California: where to go? what to see? From: pdq Date: 14 Jun 09 - 01:14 PM Perhaps you should try flying out of San Francisco or Oakland, putting Los Angeles in the middle of the trip. Think about what is really important. It looks like you will be driving 2000 miles in two or three weeks, which isn't much fun unless you really like driving. |
Subject: RE: BS: California: where to go? what to see? From: Amos Date: 14 Jun 09 - 12:17 PM There's beautiful coastline all along the Pacific, especially from Ventura north on the 101 and/or old US1 (slower but far more awesome). Along the central coast are grand marine vistas. A PM to Mudlark might yield some data on folky music thereabouts. In the Bay area, ChantyRanger, Swanno, and numerous other Catters can lead you to the best music, and the tourist attractions from the redwoods to the trolley cars are innumerable. Here in San Diego we also have some beauteous coast and beaches, a world-renowned zoo, and a variety of folk klatsches. A |
Subject: BS: California: where to go? what to see? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 14 Jun 09 - 11:52 AM I'm thinking about making a tour of California and neighbouring States. It would start with a couple of days in Las Vegas and then be a case of pointing the car where it wanted to go, stopping in motels, before finishing up three weeks or so later flying out from Los Angeles. The Grand Canyon is a must see and I would probably spend a good deal more than five minutes there. San Francisco is high on the list but, other than that, not much else has been planned. Any ideas of where to go and what to see during the month of August, particularly if it has a musical connection? DC |
