Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: greg stephens Date: 08 Sep 08 - 07:17 AM I am wondering what to do with the recordings I made of Tony Rose in 1963/64 for Charles (Radio Ballad) Parker at the BBC.I feel there are people out there who might be intrigued: they are possibly the first recordings of Tony in existence. His style is immature, but unmistakably Tony! Maybe the best thing to do is just give copies to anyone who asks me? They didn't make it onto the current CD, I imagine Phil Beer thought they were a bit old-fashioned, perhaps. The recording techniques were certainly primitive by modern standards. |

Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: GUEST,Guest : JB Date: 07 Sep 08 - 05:58 AM I too love Tony Rose's music. In fact I'd say he was one of the finest singers of traditional material that I've ever heard. I am listening to Under The Greenwood Tree (one of my most treasured CD's) as I type this & arrived here whilst looking for lyrics to his version of Limbo which I am determined to learn for myself. Anyway, needless to say I'd also love to buy a copy of this CD when it is released. JB |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: GUEST,andymac Date: 21 Apr 08 - 06:51 AM Fantastic news. I was talking to Nick Caffrey just the other weekend and quoting his influence on my own singing. I'm sad to say I never heard of him until he'd passed on but his singing of the Bonny Hind haunted and gripped me until I had to sit and learn it myself. Whenever I sing it, I still hear of his voice sounding out from a scratchy album. I'd love to get a copy of this recording, I can see the sales mounting up- and deservedly so. Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Apr 08 - 05:10 AM aha! just re-read it. d and b = Downes and Beer This mixture of Old Peculiar and Sainsburys Gin isn't doing me any good any more. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: Big Al Whittle Date: 19 Apr 08 - 06:43 PM Very interesting Phil. who is d and b? I first saw Tony in 1965 at the folk club in Exmouth. He'd just done his first year teaching, and I think he had come down for his summer hols. Playing a beat up old Levin. Ken Penny and the other guy from the The Jolly Porter were there (The Journeymen!). I fully believe all that stuff about Paul Downes (knowing all the Tony Rose /Martin Carthy stuff). What a wonderful guitarist! I was at the Weymouth fest a couple of years ago and Paul was, doing his Anji/segueing into Cocaine Blues routine. I made Derek Brimstone just sit down and listen. Cos he does/did an Anji/segueing into Lullaby of Birdland routine. Del's no slouch at guitar playing, but he was blown away by Mr Downes. About twenty years (okay over thirty!) years ago. I was talking to Martin Carthy about you and Paul and I was saying how Paul was pissed off you weren't getting gigs on the Devon folkscene (the JP in particular). He was saying how he could understand your problem and how you weren't getting the respect you deserved, because the JP gang were so immersed in the trad thing, and so narrow minded. Really it was microcosm of the problems that have beset the scene ever since. Great to hear from you - drop into the Mudcat more often! |

Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: GUEST,Phil B Date: 08 Apr 08 - 04:23 PM Hi Folks Sorry I don't have time to be more active with information. I'll try and get it all in this post. Laura is the main instigator and collector of the 'Tony Tapes' with much help from Diggory, Meg and Helen. I first came into the frame after a glass of wine too many after the SOH concert at Sidmouth last year. I mentioned my personal sadness at the danger of Tonys contribution being slightly forgotten compared with others. (When I first met the young Downes and the young Knightley back in '69, they were in a band that played almost exclusively traditional material and Paul could certainly play almost everything from both Tonys and Martin Carthys repertoire. Through them and through another schoolmate Kate Powell, I first went to the 'Jolly Porter' folk club. My memory is faulty but the first two folk gigs I heard there were Pete and Chris Coe and Tony. I don't recall which came first)Tonys influence comes full circle with us with a recording of 'Sheath & Knife' which is on the impending D&B re-union live album next month. SOH played the South Petherton Folk Fest several times under Tonys stewardship and that was the last time I saw him. His influence on my music is very strong indeed. Dig told me that Laura had been collecting material for a long time and that Pete Coe had already done sterling work in creating a short list. This is what I'm working with. With the aid of an excellent mastering engineer, I'm working the recordings up into the best state I can get them. Other than some recordings from America done by Ed Haber, I don't know any of the sources yet. I won't until the gang have written the copious sleeve notes and passed them on so I don't as yet know whose contributions are here. We intend to have this album up and running for Sidmouth. My labels distributors have already expressed interest. One of the guys there, Alan Levermore, turns out to be a great admirer of Tony as well. They have already discussed the download scenario with me and we will be going down that road, hopefully, in parallel with the physical release. We fully intend to have a few drinks that night on the record stall after the SOH concert again. At some time towards the end of the year when I've got some time, I will visit the source tapes and see what else is there. Hope that puts all of you in the picture. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: JeffB Date: 08 Apr 08 - 11:26 AM Just got in touch with her via a PM. Unfortunately it's too late to include my two tracks, however she might borrow the tape just for interest. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: The Borchester Echo Date: 08 Apr 08 - 10:19 AM Laura's been collecting up tapes for the past four years now, so I should think she has got enough by now. But you could always ask Phil Beer. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: JeffB Date: 08 Apr 08 - 09:55 AM That was me, Diane. Honestly, no need to get pissed off on her behalf. I got her e-mail address after Googling "Tony Rose Project", and I thought the site I found was the official site. But my message didn't get through so I assume there's a problem with it. Even though she's Tony Rose's daughter, I don't quite see how that makes her easy to locate. Unlike you, I don't know her, or where she lives, or anything about her. Anyway, as she hasn't got back to me she probably now has enough in the way of tracks for her CD, so end of story. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: Surreysinger Date: 07 Apr 08 - 07:26 PM Hi Greg ... hadn't realised that, as although I've seen Laura's postings before , I think I've only seen her posting as a guest ... sorry Laura !! {grins} I stand corrected. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: The Borchester Echo Date: 07 Apr 08 - 03:27 PM *Laura* is a member, and has been for years. She's not hard to locate anyway, being Tony Rose's daughter. In any case, someone has splashed her email all over the forum (whether she wanted this or not) just a few posts up. (Hi L. Just getting a bit pissed off on your behalf . . . ) |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: greg stephens Date: 07 Apr 08 - 02:58 PM Surreysinger: you may be right in general, but you are wrong in particular. *laura* is indeed a member, just cookieless in this thread. |

Subject: RE: Tony Rose live compilation coming From: GUEST,Graham O'Callaghan Date: 02 Apr 08 - 07:14 PM Hi Phil, How's life matey? Laura & Helen have kept me informed of the developments from time to time. It's great news for both Laura and Diggory as they have been trying to sort this for yonks! Tony would no doubt have a wry smile on his face to think that he might be worth more dead than alive in terms of album sales. He was down staying with me in Cornwall when he first took ill, strangely enough it was while he was working on a new singing project ... a new harmony group with myself and John Waltham but alas ... well never mind. I do miss him though as much for his dry wit and rugby companionship as his singing. Well done and thanks on behalf of so many .... Graham |

Pete Coe is well known for flogging other peoples CDs at his gigs (as are Tom and Barbara Brown. come to think of it!) As a founder member of Bandoggs, I'm sure it would be worth enquiring. Can't wait! Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Surreysinger Date: 01 Apr 08 - 01:51 PM That's really good news ... I was discussing the last performance I saw Tony give here in Guildford (which must have been somewhere around 2003 ?)with someone only the other day, and mentioned that this was in the offing ... I immediately had a request for one when it became available - so make that another two sales to add to the list. |

Subject: Tony Rose From: GUEST,Phil Beer Date: 01 Apr 08 - 01:10 PM I'm delighted to be able to announce that there will be a compilation album of live material from the late Tony Rose. After several discussions with family members we are now going ahead. I intend to have this album ready to be launched at Sidmouth this year. There is a wonderful selection of live performances from Tony which have been collected from many sources too numerous to mention here. Thanks to all the contributors. Pete Coe originally took on the role of editor for this task and thanks very much to him for his work. I've always felt there was a danger of Tonys contribution to folk and roots music being slightly forgotten and I hope this will redress the balance. Thanks especially to Laura and Diggory, Amy, Meg and Helen for making it all come together. |
