Be careful, mayomick, be very careful. You are in danger of reviving the great debate over bubble & squeak.

The bubbles contain hype and built-in obsolescence in roughly equal measures .They don't really serve any purpose other than to squeak after about six months and embarrass you into buying a new pair.

"You should buy the fancy expensive ones with bubbles on the heels.."

I dunno about that. Are these bubbles filled with fluid?

I once bought a pair that had insoles with fluid in them. The idea was that it would yield or cushion. I wore them on a short hike (maybe half a mile) and had never had such pain in my feet before. I made my way back to the nature center, and my husband had to go to the car and get other shoes for me.

I wrote the company, but they never wrote back.
=======
I have secretly longed to wear shoes with flickering lights. But if they don't work for very long, I don't suppose they are worth wishing for.

Some of the pre-teens (mostly) here like the sneakers that have flickering lights when they walk. Big sellers at Walmart and cheaper clothing stores. Most don't seem to stay lit for very long.

You should buy the fancy expensive ones with bubbles on the heels -Nike ,Addidas etc - they come equipped with a handy warning squeak .They're very nice to walk about in when new ,but once the bubble goes after about six months , they start up an embarrassing down-at-heel squeaky squeak . Then you know it's time to buy a new pair .

olddude, we have a pair of pueblo mocs, made at Taos. the bottom part is Navajo thickness, and attached are deer skin tops that come to knee-height. The object is to keep spiny or dry weeds from scratching the legs or getting into the moc proper.
Now most Indians have forsaken tradition and wear those ugly sneakers.

Taos Indians present an odd appearance in that many men are tall and have a western plains appearance, while many women are stocky, typical pueblo build. The general belief is that plains and Navajo raiders added the 'tall' genes, but geneticists say this idea doesn't hold with genetic theories. Dunno. Used to spend a lot of time there when I was a wee one. My parents would drop me off with pueblo friends when they were working in the area.

The stories of Number One Ladies Detective Agency, and Precious with her 'traditional' figure, come to mind now when I see a 'typical' pueblo woman.

Q, the problem is not do my sneakers have memories. The problem is changing new sneakers every year. I assume that it what Bradbury meant when he referred to 'last year's sneakers.'

If we did that, how could we pay for our fifth guitar, our 12th pick, our third set of equipment for recording LP's?

As to memory, my 15-year-old pair probably had them, but most were lost when I put in the new shoelaces. They look so funny - bedraggled brownish sneakers with smooth, snowy-white laces.

Can you get the REAL duct tape there, the brand that Red Green uses? I looked everywhere in my town and couldn't find that brand. I need to fix up the holes in my car. The duct tape that the dollar store sells doesn't do the job.

olddude,
We still have an EFAD store (Everything For A Dollar). We used to have a Dollar Giant, but it's now a Dollar-twenty-five Giant.

Wear those sneakers as long as you can. They don't make 'em like they used to.

by the way I think the Navajo ones are the absolute best. The sole is thicker giving better protection but conforms to the ground you get the feel of the ground and gives you the control.

Very good point .. the ones made of deer skin will conform to the object you step on .. the impression is faint. To avoid capture they would use very soft deer skin. Unlike my old sneakers that a blind man could track me LOL

Hard bison hide was used by some Indians; very good against sharp objects (But not against chollo-).

Q

I actually had a pair of Navajo moccasins. In the woods if one wants to disappear there is nothing that leaves a smaller trail then moccasins. Some of the scout snipers actually bring them along. Pretty dang comfy on the feet also. Not great protection against sharp objects but amazing.

The native American would avoid capture .. the best scouts of the Calvary could not find them ... their trail was so well covered. Mainly because of their skill and their tracks were non existent because of them.

leeneia, don't your old sneakers (or whatever) have memories?

Find the Ray Bradbury story, and you will understand Blackbelt's reference. An excellent writer.

But perhaps time for olddude to graduate to that good North American Indian invention, moccasins. (My latest by El Salvadorans, the quality excellent).

To set joking aside for just a moment -

Olddude asked if his sneakers are obselete. I believe they are obsolete if they no longer provide any cushioning or shock absorbing.

If your legs and feet still feel good after walking, then they are not obsolete yet, no matter how much duct tape and dirt are on them.

As for me, I have a pair of dingy sneakers that I use for gardening. They have soles about 2 inches thick that are good for driving a spade or pitchfork in the ground. I'd hate to try to walk or run in them, though.

Blackbelt, why do you mean by 'last year's pair'? I do not grasp this concept. My old pair is 15 years old and my new pair is 5.

You need to read some Ray Bradbury. Not quite sure of the title but I think it is "The sound of summer running", the last story in the "R is for Rocket" anthology.
It explains why it is necessary to have a new pair of sneakers as last year's pair are so full of memories and experiences that they have become too heavy.

Don't own any sneakers. Not since school days.

Usually wear moccasins, I have several pairs; lined with fleece for winter, some with 'rubber' soles for wet weather. Lands End has good quality; Canada adds 18% duty but still cheaper than equivalents made in Canada (my most recent pair, bison leather, rubber sole over bison, $60 before duty).

Canada has "Loonie" stores. The dollar equivalent has a loon on one side and queen Liz on the other. Most things cost a "Toonie"- a $2 dollar coin with a polar bear one side and Liz the other.

The stores are good for odds and ends such as bags with Xmas and other designs. We got tired of wrapping gifts and the bags can be used by the recipient the following year.

Sneakers, nowadays, are like cars - depreciate 30% when you walk out of the store with them and obsoleted within days by the new super-duper model with all the new features you can't live without!

One of the worries people had about maybe going over to the Euro instead of the Pound was what would, happen to the poundshops. I mean the range of stuff they could sell for one Euro has to be a lot restricted.

How did that work out in Ireland?

Sandals when it's hot. (Sandals with socks maybe when it's a bit chilly, and you feel like teasing people.) Brown boots on all other occasions (except perhaps funerals). When the sole falls off, and it can't be fixed, get a new pair.

I think Coope Boyes and Simpson have the right idea when they sing:

Make it mend it, wear it out
Make it do or do without.

Now I am not talking about my fancy go to meetin on sunday sneakers. I am talking about my favorite oldies that I walk my big dog through the grapevines with. You know the ones with the duck tape on the back where the wiener dog chewed it as a pup. He is 12 now ..   Now I know they seem kinda old .. and they don't help me run higher or jump farther .. but they keep my feet dry (except for when I step in the swamp) Now they may not smell the best, but I don't either when I eat burritos and people still keep me ..

what do you think? Are they obsolete?
