It seems pretty certain that anyone bearing the Sarsfield name is bound to have an Irish connection, no matter how far back. The name itself is Anglo-Norman, that is originally French: like Fitzgerald, Fitzpatrick, Burke, etc. They invaded Ireland and conquered it but eventually became "more Irish than the Irish".

Good cheers to all.

Claudia & Friends,

Dalmacio Velez Sarsfield did have Irish ancestry. His mother Rose Sarsfield was a daughter of George Sarsfield, who was born in Ireland and arrived to Córdoba, Argentina, in the 1750s. According to E. Udaondo, he was related to Patrick Sarsfield.

Ref. soccer, other clubs with Irish names are O'Higgins, Villa Fox, O'Connor, Murphy, Amstrong, ...

Good cheers... Edmundo

Tim, As I have already said dont put your house on Velez Sarsfields being named after oul Paddy of Limerick fame. I was also of the opinion that the team was named after our hero, I checked this out a number of years ago and found that the Club was named after an Englishman.Ard Mhacha.

Claudia: I've been away for 3 days visiting family at Easter. Thanks for the information. Your Sarsfield was probably named after the original Patrick Sarsfield, Irish hero, died 1703. Thanks again and all the best to you there in Argentina.

This is for Big Tim from Argentina

Velez Sarfield is a football club originated in the neighbourhood called Velez Sarfield. In our history there was a Dalmacio Velez Sarfield (1800-1875) who wrote the civil code (I don't know if that's the word: a book containing all the laws applying to ordinary members of a community) and was co-author of the commerce code (?)He was born in a provice of Argentina (Córdoba). I don't know about ascendants, they might be one of the ones you and the other people mention. Several football clubs have names of the neighbourhoods where they got formed. Boca Juniors (the "barrio de la Boca") River Plate because the stadium is very near the "Río de la Plata", Chacarita, etc. I hope this is 'enlightening' to you. If any doubts crop up I'll be too pleased to answer them while I'm waiting for my answers about Wolfe Tones.

PS:Ahhh! by the way: Country name: Argentina. Nationality: Argentine or Argentinian(I don't mean to be nasty OK? ;) )

Big Tim, Don`t bet on it, it is true, Sarsfield was his name and if I remember correctly Sarsfield was an English Athletic Coach a few years ago. as I say, don`t put your house on it. Ard Mhacha.

Sorry to disappoint you Big Tim but that Sarsfields teams is named after an Englishman. I believe he was working in the Argentine at or around the turn of the last Century and he then introduced the locals to the game. The O`Higgins Club in Chile is named after Bernardo O`Higgins the famous revolutnary. Ard Mhacha.

Claudia: can I ask you something almost completely unrelated. I believe there is a football team in Argentine named after another famous Irishman Patrick Sarsfield. I saw a report recently that they drew with Rio Plata in the league decider. I tried emailing the club but some technical problem crept in. Do you know anything about the Sarsfield club? Sorry I can't help with your enquiry.

Thanks to all the people who answered to my message but what I need is specific information about he song itself not William Brown or his life (we learn about Guillermo Brown in Argentine history, here any encyclopedia or dictionary has inf. about him) thanks anyway.

My question (there it goes again)was: does anybody know anything about the song and its author? Any anecdotes something curious about it? Has it been performed in public?... audience's reaction? My studets are teens and they asked for details after listening to the song which they really enjoyed and were certainly surpised lo hear Malvinas not Falkland.

Thanks again to everybody.

(waiting for answers :)

Claudia from Argentina

The story of Admiral Brown is quite well known in Ireland, and a biography was published a few years ago. I don't know anything about the song, but to judge from the last verse it was written around the time of the recent war over the Falklands/Malvinas between Argentina and the UK.

Admiral William Brown in the Forum (Lyrics link for other people).

Sorry, I don't know who wrote the song. There are several sites on Admiral William Brown himself.

Catholic Encyclopedia: William Brown

William Brown> (Foxford, Mayo site)

THE LIFE OF ADMIRAL WILLIAM BROWN (1777 - 1857) (Irish Stamps Online)

Bibliographic info (from HERE):

Guillermo Brown, Memorias del Almirante Brown (Buenos Aires: Academia Nacional de la Historia, 1957). Documents from Argentina's Naval Archives published by National Commission of Homage to Admiral William Brown on the centenary of his death. Includes account by Brown of his controversial privateering raids in the Pacific, 1815-1816, with his brother M. Mac Brown and Captain Hipolito Bouchard.

I am an Argentine English teacher seeking information (not lyrics - I've got them)about this song. Anything will be of value to me. My students listened to it and couldn't believe so many historical references of our history in an Irish(?) song, and started asking about author, when it was written, why and only then did I realise I knew nothing about it. I guess there must be somebody out there who can help me. Thanks in advance. Kindest regards. Claudia Sanchez Argentina
