Not only an I a Hilbilly but a non pedigreed one at that! Legs are the same length far as I know but then I didn't grow up plowing or it may've been a nother tale all together. I live in Dickens Iowa (find THAT on the map) but i did my share of nomadery out of high school.

The song had the same tune as "Life's railway to heaven"

"Life is like a mountain railway, with an engineer that's brave...."

Wasn't there a song about war and bombs:

Don't you hear the H-bombs' thunder
Echo like the crack of doom
when the skies are wrent asunder
fallout makes the earth a tomb

had a part in it about bringing death to a stranger

murder folks in distant lands
would you bring death to a stranger
have his blood upon your hands?

I can't remember much more of it as I am just a hillbilly (and a young one at that) but i thought I recalled that and it sounded appropriate for these times.

Amos:

One heck of a little protest song ya' got there, my friend. Glad to see that you've had enough. I've had enough ever since Junior decided that he was GOD. I knew selecting an alcohic might catch up with the country. Yep, remember the pretzel incident? Well, I think Junior got his butt all drunked up and had a hallucination that he was God, Himself. Problem is, most folks get all drunked up and they say a lot of biastful stuff but the next morning, they got a headachs and a story to tell the boss. With Junior, he wakes up, discovers he is boss and has a big ugly stick to prove it.

So Junior, who isn't as supid as we thought (I didn't say smart...), looks around at a bunch of domestic problems that he's caused and for which he doesn't have a slightest clue how to fix and then he looks at those big old dogs (Harkin Oil, Election fraud) and says, "Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, time just right fir a war" so he calls up Cheney who has a few dogs of his own waitin' in line for a piec of his butt and Cheney says,"Great idea, Junior! I didn't think you had it in ya'! I'll get Donnie on the phone and we ought to be able to get this thing crankin' around election time! Danged smart of ya' Junior!"

And so that the story. If you wanta believe the prezel thing, then fine. And BTW, if you're in the market fir a bridge....

I repeat...for the 2126th time, it is NOT necessary to be a member with a cookie...just be SOME identity with continuity! It is quite rude to toss heavy topics into a group from a cloak of anonymity.

Thanks, dear!

Like most Americans, I have been taken aback and non-plussed by the brazen effrontery of the various criminals moving across my radar in the last year or two, regardfless of their religous illusions... and anyone who reads my posts from the end of September last year will see that I am not a dyed-in-the-wool pacifist in the face of wanton provocation. But it turns my stomach to be manipulated by mass PR buttons, bread and war and circuses.

I have had enough of this crap. If I cannot get honest information from the worms in the Hill, I ain't gonna pull my punches no more. It is insulting, and I do not take kindly to being treated like a Pavlovian lab animal. IF the fact come out in support of the whole fear-cloud Bush is promoting I may change my mind about the need for military action but I doubt I will ever change my opinion of the afore-mentioned Worms.

Wheeeee! A War!

Everybody get in line,
Bring your gun, but leave your spine
We are going o'er the sea
To have ourselves a killin' spree!

Mayhem, murder, what the hey,
Bushie says it all okay!
Never mind what Momma taught
We're following the Bushie Twat.

Muslim bones we aim to break
Muslim widows we will make
Litter ancient roads and ruts
With their bleeding, torn-up guts

Strew their muscles and their eyes
Down the road to Paradise
We know what these bombs are for!
Follow me to Bushie's War!

Outdated? Excuse me? The timeliness of the article is defined by its opening paragraph: Today, the dogs of war are barking not in Europe but in the District of Columbia, and again people are looking on helplessly as the tragedy unfolds. . A good friend just back from DC states that the discussion of war is on every tongue there, not as a possible threat but as a future fact.

As of this morning the Bushtwat is poking NATO with the same stick he poked the UN with to make them feel that they will be irrelevant if they do not dance to his jig. HE has also declared that Saddam Hussein damn well better not try saying he has no WMD, as though he knows for a fact that it would be deceptive of him, but as far as I have seen he has not shared the facts behind this cosmic insight with the American public.

Here is the bottom line, my fellow humans. SOmeone is going to be murdered. Premeditated murder, with malice aforehand and the full intent to destroy or maim. As of right now, of course, we do not know which victim will be first, but it is a very good bet it will be a serial crime with multiple victims murdered by a similar MO.

We know in advance who the perpetrator of these murders will be. We know his weapons of choice and we know his rationalization in advance -- he intends to claim self-defense as the rationale for a whole series of slayings.

The grounds for this 'argument for the defense' is weapons of mass destruction and the clear and present danger that they will be used.

The facts supporting this claim are not in evidence to be weighed in any judgement. IN their absence we are being presented with a rationale without grounds in defense of murder in the first degree. The American citizen who intends to perpetrate this crime is asking for your agreement and support in carrying out his intentions.

His intentions also include maiming, widowing, wounding, and destroying private property through the use of violence.

Who wants to play? Sign up here. DOugR. you up for it? A little mayhem to pass the time away? Why not? It sounds very interesting, at least, exciting, dramatic. Not heroic though -- it's about as heroic as sniping fropm the trunk of a car, which as you recall, did not go down well. You think there's a difference? What -- skin color? Gyamme one goddamn break.

Robert Higgs, on 23-9-02, wrote the following stirring piece which I am moved to bring to your attention, FWIW:

Helplessly, We Await the Catastrophe Our Rulers Are Creating
by Robert Higgs

I cannot stop thinking of 1939, when everyone could see the war coming and no one, it seemed, could do anything to stop it. Contemplating the impending catastrophe, W. H. Auden wrote,

In the nightmare of the dark
All the dogs of Europe bark,
And the living nations wait,
Each sequestered in its hate;
Intellectual disgrace
Stares from every human face
And the seas of pity lie
Locked and frozen in each eye.

("In Memory of W. B. Yeats," 1939)

Today, the dogs of war are barking not in Europe but in the District of Columbia, and again people are looking on helplessly as the tragedy unfolds. We see the disaster being designed and touted, we observe the intellectual disgrace staring from the faces of George W. Bush and his advisers, and we note the seas of pity lying locked and frozen in their eyes. Yet we can do nothing to prevent the makers of this coming calamity from carrying out the devastation.

I wonder if they ever lie awake at night and imagine the faces of the men, women, and children – people they do not know, people who do not know them and who cannot harm them – who will be dead soon, their bodies crushed, ripped, and burned by the force of U.S. munitions exploding in their streets, homes, shops, schools, and hospitals. Those bombs are smart, no doubt, but they are better at math than at morality. Even when they work as they are supposed to, they are not smart enough to discriminate between the innocent and the guilty as they detonate in a densely populated urban area such as Baghdad. Do Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld sleep peacefully nowadays, or do they awake haunted by visions of the innocent strangers they are preparing to obliterate? Do they rise at midnight to wash their hands, only to find that they cannot cleanse the damned spot?

In Congress, the politicians declare their strong support for the president's new policy of global preemptive wars and, in particular, for his impending assault on the ailing, impoverished, nearly defenseless Iraqis. The legislators dare not oppose the president's plan, because then their electoral opponents would call their patriotism into question. Their patriotism, it seems, requires that they sacrifice their clear constitutional duty for the sake of campaign appearances. A deeper patriotism – an allegiance to the principles of the American Republic – lies beyond their comprehension. In the name of a vulgar and superficial patriotism, they forsake all loyalty to the traditions that once made the United States a beacon of freedom, rather than a world-ranging bully to be feared and loathed. Congress may posture and pretend, but it will do nothing substantial to exercise its constitutional authority to decide whether to commit the nation to war. Better to go along, to pass a vague, blank-check resolution. Later, if the war goes badly, the members can criticize it; if it goes well, they can take credit for supporting it; but in no event will they put themselves in a position to be held genuinely accountable.

So, with our supine and cowardly representatives unwilling to resist the chief executive's usurpations, "we the people" can only wait and watch as the president allows his strings to be pulled by people for whom war will be not the last resort but the option they will exercise as soon as they perceive a threat, however modest, to their mastery of the world. The old boundaries have become irrelevant. No longer does the U.S. government content itself to rule over a vast continental domain. No longer does it find satisfaction merely in a Monroe Doctrine that proclaims its hegemony in the Western Hemisphere. No, our rulers have declared in sufficiently plain language, in their new "National Security Strategy of the United States," made public on September 20, that they intend to dominate the entire world. Some members of the political class speak openly of empire; others avoid the word but embrace the substance. Make no mistake, however: the American Republic is no longer just sick unto death; it is stone-cold dead.

Although many ordinary Americans appear to have no quarrel with what is being done in their name, many others oppose this imperial impudence and the brutalities that express and sustain it. For the dissidents, the government has prepared a suitable reception. The TIPS informants are getting ready to report suspicions about them. The prison cells wait to receive more "material witnesses," "enemy combatants," and anyone accused, no matter how baselessly, of aiding or abetting alleged terrorists. For these unfortunates, no writ of habeas corpus will spoil the government's day; no defense lawyer's shadow will darken the doorway of its secret interrogations. As the president and Attorney General John Ashcroft have made clear, if you are not with the government, you are against it, and they have demonstrated already how far they are willing to go to deal with those who are against. Henceforth, thanks to the USA PATRIOT Act, all of us will be subject to closer surveillance. As we are ever more systematically monitored and regimented by our own government, even the elementary freedoms of movement, speech, and assembly will go by the board. In time, all of us will learn to keep quiet, if we know what is good for us and our families.

We are told that the government's new policies, with their perpetual wars "to keep the peace," will bring us security, but they will not do so. Instead, the American empire's global violence will create a bottomless reservoir of vengeful terrorists. By insisting on poking its imperial stick into every hornet's nest on the planet, the U.S. government will ensure that Americans will continue to be stung. Wherever they may travel, at home or abroad, they will be at risk of attack by aggrieved men and women.

Perhaps we should not weep. Maybe a once-free people who surrenders its liberties so readily, so unjustifiably, deserves nothing better. Meanwhile, we can only wait helplessly for our masters to commence the catastrophe in Iraq, and heaven only knows where else.

September 23, 2002

Robert Higgs is senior fellow in political economy at the Independent Institute, editor of The Independent Review, and author of Crisis and Leviathan and numerous scholarly and popular articles on Congress.

Those people who chose to read the entire article that ANON.GUEST posted will realize that his/her/its statement "half a million people have travelled from across Europe to protest this war build-up" is not exactly true. Most of the rally participants were already there, and have been for the last week, as part of the most recent anti-globalization protests.

Please see the Veteran's Day essay I posted in the thread titled "Courage of Your Convictions".

Surely, in a democracy, the only people worthy of being respected aren't just the people who have served in the military. To suggest that people who are engaged in the just as important, and at times more important work, known as daily citizenship, are just as deserving of our love and respect.

I get a little tired of people who presume that anyone who is trying to stop this right wing Republican war agenda motivated by greed and imperialism, which began in earnest with the Reagan/Bush administration, are traitors and/or enemies of the state. I also get more than a little fed up with people who wish to use veterans, or families of veterans, to further their own narrow, right wing Republican agendas. People who found what was done to Max Clelland to be "brilliant strategy".

There are some very good reasons why progressive left Senator Paul Wellstone was endorsed by Minnesota veterans, over Bush's hand picked right wing Republican candidate Coleman. One of them being that not all veterans support the radical, right wing extremist Republican war agenda.

I agree with you, GUEST, that this weekend is a very appropriate time to not only reflect on our brothers and sisters who had gone before us in the many, mnay battlefields that have cluttered the Earth during our lives but also a time when question the wisdom of continuing the lunacy. I graduated from a militry school during the Vietnam War and out of the hundred or so brothers who were in my class, 8 were killed in Vietnem, along with one cousin, and my best friend in grade school. And for what? These were people who were part of my life just as there are men and women who may be about to be put in harms way so that a *bored* nation and its hawkish leaders can get their jollies.

With that, and only that said for this day, I will go back to reflecting on the lives of my friends and family who aren't with us today in body and pray that the Lord speak very loudly in the hearts of those who are so Hell-bent on sacrificing lives when there are so many pro-human, pro-Earth options which have not been either considered or tried.

Peace in the name and spirit of out fallen Brothers and sisters...

Bobert

Have any of you who are reading this thread actually read the article I posted? The thread title was taken from the article, which quotes from a banner seen in the March.

And with all sincerity Mary, I'm curious as to what are you suggesting constitutes abusiveness in our posting, in the context of Veterans Day?

The article was about half a million Europeans protesting against the US and British build-up for war with Iraq. That is a very large number of protesters on any issue, and of course it deserves to be discussed with the same respect paid to veterans of previous wars, and their families.

There is a substantial international movement growing in opposition to the imperial war strategy of the US and Britain. Democracies will only survive when dissenting voices are not only allowed to be heard, but when they reach these kinds of numbers, get listened to respectfully, and included in the policy debate.

Disparaging half a million people who have travelled from across Europe to protest this war build-up is neither respectful, or helpful. Engaging with people who wish to discuss it, is.

If the Tower of Pisa were struck from just the right angle, it might straighten it up some, saving Italian restoration crews much toil and expenditure.

I remember when some nut dropped a bomb on Hiroshima, by the way. And as if that wasn't enough, on Nagasaki as well.

The title of the thread is interesting, as it makes perfect logical sense: "War IS hell" according to William Tecumseth Sherman and Robert E. Lee, among others. They were in a good position to know.

From today's Reuters on the march in Italy today, culminating a weeklong European peace conference:

FLORENCE, Italy (Reuters) - More than half a million anti-war protesters from across Europe marched through this Italian Renaissance city on Saturday in a loud and colorful demonstration denouncing any possible U.S. attack on Iraq.

Brimming with anti-American feelings and riled by a tough new U.N. resolution to disarm Iraq, young and old activists from as far afield as Russia and Portugal joined forces for the carnival-like rally, singing Communist anthems and 1970s peace songs.

"Take your war and go to hell," read one banner, in a forest of multi-colored and multi-lingual placards.
