This by pass thing is now routine surgery, and is far less life threatening than it was 20 years ago. Other than the weeks of pain, constipation, feeling unnecessary and not being able to do anything, it's not so bad.
Seriously, the good energy from all these mudcatters is priceless. I'm certain it helped to heal me. My best to you.

Magician over did it yesterday, tried to fit three locks but only managed 1 and a half. Rested today as he is aching all over. Guess that is what happens when you don't use your muscles for several weeks!!

I'm home!

We left them to cope Up North this lunchtime and are not returning until New Year's Eve. The house seems to have survived the Firecat - although the complaints panel of Cats tried telling me they had NEVER been fed the whole time.

Magician is doing very well. He managed to giggle today without grabbing for his teddy which is a sign things are getting a lot better. He is also becoming more active although he has good days and bad.

Actually Geoff, I've spent too much time in horsepissals the past 6 years and the only plus is that I have about 6 hours worth of material now!

Like, have you noticed how many docs and nurses use "we" when they mean YOU? Some dumpy and homely nurse asks if "we" are ready for a bath......"Not with you Honey!!!!"

Are we in much pain? "I dunno'......You look pretty happy and chipper but I hurt like hell asshole!!!"

And speaking of pain, they are now real big on having you "rate" your pain on a 1 to 10 scale. Here's a tip: Let them know you are in a LOT of pain now, even if you aren't, and rate it a 3. They'll note this and actually give you something decent when you later say 6! Saying 9 will cop you a quality buzz. If you start too high or tell them the truth, the chances of getting anything even moderately effective are about the same as discovering the very first Martin D-28 in your attic.

I have also concluded that anyone who does any procedure short of major surgeries should have to experience the thing first. Ever hear of a T.E.E.? That stands for Trans-Esophageal-Echocardiogram. This is a real fun test where they do a sonigram of your heart but to get a better look, do it by looking through the esophagus. Imagine a flexible tube about three-eighths of an inch in diameter (with ridges). They numb your throat to inhibit the gag response then insert the tube and work t around for about 10 minutes. This is unbelievable......it still makes you want to gag and your throat really takes a beating. But rest assured some friggin' person will say, "Just relax....it will only be worse if you fight it." Fight it?? Geeziz, I'm trying to relax and I'm not fighting it....but for some odd reason or another my body is demanding that I BREATHE! After it was over I asked if the anyone in the room including the Doc had ever had one of these and none had!

Ever have potassium through an IV? It's a caustic substance for gawdsake, but your body needs it. So just before a surgery, they find I am much too low and rather than reschedule, they give it to me IV and push it. An IV push can be a problem with anything, but potassium needs to go in slowly because the faster it goes in the more the caustic effect......you can feel your body getting warmer. The more the push the hotter it gets and in my case they were up to a flow rate that, I kid you not, made me feel as if my circulatory system was on fire. I have no way of describing this but it was the beyond pain! The nurse says she knows it is "probably" a "bit" painful.   Karen was there and she knows I can take a lot of pain and she realized I wasn't kidding when I said this was the worst. She managed to convince them to back off. I ask both nurses then in the room and after they had adjusted for a slower flow rate if either of them had ever had this and neither of course had.

BTW, if you are told they need to make a draw for "Arterial Blood Gases"...an ABG...DEMAND the best phlebotomist in the place and if the one you get can't get a good draw in three minutes or less, raise hell. Get up and demand another tech..........You'll know why...

Magician (because he is young and fit!) had both mammary arteries used, so luckily does not have to worry about his leg healing up. It will just take a bit longer for the chest and be a bit more painful.

He's doing fine although all his shoulder and neck muscles have all tightened up. Getting plenty of rest.

Since you're home and doing well Magician, you may also have a couple of other things to note. I assume they took the vein from your leg? I had a quad so I'm not sure what they do on a double. If so, you are probably complaining more about your leg than your chest. BTW, have you ever seen one of these operations? They use a gawddam power saw to cut through your sternum and then (at least here) generally use staples to pull it back together when they're through. Don't go to the airport for awhile because at first because the staples are new enough and very shallow under the skin, so you will set off the metal detectors......NAKED!!

You might also remember that about two and a half years ago I also had my Mitral Valve replaced and it was done with a robotic surgery technique. When I heard they were going to have to replace it, I honestly cried. ONCE is enough with the "Broad Axe to the breastbone" bit. But then I found out that I could possibly have it done with this robot they were testing at Ohio State and it was great. NOW for the bad news.......They are doing all types of things with the robot now and one of the best things is bypasses!

Just imagine......Instead of having your chest hurt as it does now and your leg hurt as it does now, YOU could be out and washing the car or doing whatever you actually want to do (washing the car would be low on my list). They use a vein from inside the chest for the grafts and the only openings in your chest are two holes about the size of a pencil. (For my Valve replacement they put in a 3 inch incision to pass the valve into the robot's "hands" but it was not painful at all)---No sawn sternum, no post op pain...........Most of the bypass patients at Ohio State are in and out of the hospital in 3 days and feeling great! They advise not going back to work until the work "inside" has a chance to heal, but there is no pain with this procedure at all!!!

You didn't want to know that did you?   Evil Spaw strikes again!!

Another thing you might consider is ordering this tonic or tea or whatever you call it from Mercy General Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Does a great job of helping the heart to heal if you can stand the stuff. Not to gross you out too much, but this tea/tonic stuff is made from Koala Bears and some other herbs. It's completely disgusting but it works. And when I say disgusting......well, to be frank, there are some chunky little bits and hair and stuff in it. I wrote and asked them if they could at least get the hair and the chunkier bits out and they wrote back saying, "The Koala Tea of Mercy is not strained."

Regarding the Evil Catspaw and His Sneeze of Death stories, a friend once remarked to me that people tell everyone they know (and often, as in 'Spaw's case) everyone they DON'T know who doesn't get away fast enough) about the horrors of their experiences because they can't very well get even with the people who inflicted said horrors.

They don't care. The nice nurse might pat you on the head and give you a pillow or sell you a stuffed bear off a little pushcart that she manoevres up and down the halls, crying 'Koalas and Teddies, alive, alive-not', but she DOESN'T CARE. I'm sure she did once, before the 1,024th patient told her how he sneezed earlier and wondered if it was actually possible to hit the door with a liver or spleen or something. Now, YOU say "HOLY MOTHER OF ACKER, WHITE HOT PAIN, SEARING MY GUTS. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DO AN IMPRESSION OF JOHN HURT IN ALIEN, AND..." and the nurse says, "Yes, that will hurt. Did you have a bowel movement today? Here's a bear. Where's your wallet?"

Anyway, they don't care, so you search for some alternate target upon whom to inflict your tales. (There's a word for this, but I don't know what it is. It's like when you're mad at your boss but you can't do anything about it or you'll get fired, so you go home and play bagpipes with all the windows open.) In any case, I hope you'll share your stories with us, even if we HAVE heard Catspaw's tales. It helps to get that sort of thing out of your system - much like certain tubes.

I take it this was a surprise bypass? If we'd known they charged for bears ahead of time, we might have EACH sent you one. You would have had your own, and when you felt better, you could have started a black bear market with the spare bears, undercutting the £5 price. Too late now.

He's definately starting to get better - this morning he was actually heard making singing noises instead of total complaints!

He is still trying to catch up on the sleep he didn't get in hospital but he managed to get some last night. His bear is still being used for hanging onto when he giggles, sneezes or coughs. The giggles seem to be winning. Spaw, he still hasn't forgiven you :-)

Magician is a lot brighter today and has been smiling and laughing a lot.He has had his first shower today for which he is eternally grateful. Breathing is getting better.

I went to see him this morning and he was being grumpy - a sure sign that he is mending, although slowly.

He has got tubes etc out and is being allowed, nay forced, to perambulate the ward. His surgeon is happy with him and if he continues as he is doing he may be evicted homeward by early next week.

Gillie is coping with both him and decorating the Watering Hole for the Christmas period - keeping the rest of us under her firm fist!

Hey Gillie......After 3+ weeks I think I may have my computer back and working.....sorta'! Anyway, you should know without being told that my best thoughts are with you for a quick recovery. Having had a Quad myself, let me elaborate a bit on that cough thing.

Ya' gotta' love those folks at the hospital. They explain how much it will hurt to cough and show you how and you're thinking, "Isn't that nice?" But in reality, about the first thing they have you do is COUGH!!!! I can't describe the feeling, but maybe Magician can for you......It hurts like hell. But it's okay after awhile and you get used to it. But pass this on to him......What they never mention is the sneeze. I guess it was Day 2 out of ICU that I was doing pretty well, walking the halls slowly and coughing as I should and all to prevent pneumonia and then it happened. All of a sudden, as is usually the case, I had to sneeze and did so immediately, as you so often do. I don't know the time period between the thought and action but it was just a few nanoseconds BUT IN THAT TEENSY BIT OF TIME my mind said, "Ohmygawd, I'm gonna' sneeze and if coughing hurts like it does, this is going to be friggin' awful!!!!"

I sneezed and as they were scraping the miserable, quivering blob of jello off the floor that had once been me, I knew I was right!!!! Tell him not to sneeze!!!!!

Laughing hurts some too, but it's a good hurt.

People are given a pillow to cuddle when they cough so it doesn't hurt so much. Magician has a teddy bear for same job. Apparently people used to be given huggy bears originated from America. Then they started to charge £5 and it fissiled out.

Magicians bear has a green Santa hat and a green waistcoat. Thank you big broth!!!

Am happier now he out of intensive care. Still a lot of healing to be done, keep up the good work people.

When Gillie went in to see him this afternoon there was a definate improvement - so much so that they have moved him out of intensive care and into Ward 32 which is high dependancy.

Magician has had his double bypass. Had trouble with low blood pressure at first and didn't want to wake up. Still in CICU. Hopefully will be transferred to Ward 32 tomorrow.

Magician went into hospital today for his double heart by-pass. Surgery is planned for tomorrow morning.

The suggestion is that having found he has a heart has created a need for it to be immediately by-passed! As yet they have not found his wallet in their investigations.

Big hugs to both him and Gillie who is coping with running the pub whilst he is away.
