Thank you for the good wishes.

It never rains but it pours. Paul has just taken Harry to the GP centre at Queens Hospital. He has such a bad cough that he is coughing til he is sick, he's so upset it's heartbreaking. He won't drink anything and NHS direct doctor wants to see him to make sure there isn't anything else going on with his chest other than the cough/cold. I just want to wrap them all up and keep tham safe and well.

Ah, poor thing. Whooping cough is making the rounds in Alaska- you don't suppose...? Probably not- vaccinations these days have made those diseases just about a thing of the past.

I had whooping cough way back in the dark ages; I well remember coughing until I was sick.

Here's hoping you will get good news soon on all fronts.

I'm coming late to this thread.

Sad to say, it doesn't get any easier, but it is always worthwhile. You always worry about them, no matter how big they are when they get sick. The big benefit to their getting older is that they do a better job of telling you what doesn't feel good. We've had our share of "they need to be seen right now" visits and we have a family pediatric surgeon and an oncologist/hematologist (for the hematology specialty, not the cancer one) along with our regular family practitioners.

I brought my newborn son home from two weeks in the NICU only to turn around that afternoon and take his older sister up to the same children's hospital ER because she got sand in her eye when playing in the yard. I felt like I lived at that place after a while. She was with us in the birthing suite when her brother was born, but the next day we had to take her to her pediatrician for a horrible cough--she had bronchitis. I was in the pediatrician's office less than 24 hours after giving birth. You do what you have to do. :-/

Khatt, it does get easier. Take comfort in the realization that what they really want when they feel bad is MOM. And for a few years here, you are the center of their world. It's what keeps you going later as you watch them grow and slowly move out on their own--knowing that they couldn't do it so confidently if they didn't have that hot core of love that comes from the years of hands-on parenting that you're doing right now.

Sometimes it might be tempting to wish to always keep them cute and cuddly and exactly at some wonderful small stage, but I'm here to tell you that as they grow they are so interesting to watch, and it is wonderful to teach and share and see the positive impact you are having on the world at large by raising such wonderful children. My children are big, one is away at college and in a year and a half the other one will follow. They are such good company that I will miss them being here, but I am so pleased with the confident people they are becoming that I wouldn't wish it to be any different.

Don't scare yourself to death by Googling symptoms for your daughter. Sometimes you can land exactly on the condition, but most times the keywords are too squishy and you'll worry needlessly. Stick to your guns for appointments, accept offers of assistance when you can because they can help, and good luck as you sort all of this out.

SRS

Harry is still grotty but has managed to keep some food and fluid down. We've got a job lot of calpol and he should be back to his usual cheerful self soon.

Thank you for your good wishes everyone. The bond between George and Amelia amazes me on a daily basis and the bond Harry has with them both is beautiful.

I've not googled symptoms as I can worry for England at the best of times! We're staying positive about all this and wait to see what the consultant says. I know Milly will be in the best hands and we continue to ask the Goddess to hold her close.

You're children sound wonderful SRS, I hope I have a similiar relationship with mine when they are older.

Keep pushing fluids and watch how much he pees, or doesn't...popsicles, soups, whatever..water of course. Pedlialite?? perhaps. I don't know much about it. But dehydration is a concern of course in a situation like this.....flat ginger ale? Something homemade (google first) with a little sugar and salt in it? mg

Mine always thought popsicles were a great way to get over a bug. Avoid the reddish ones, that food color can sometimes cause its own set of problems.

Just caught up with this one - you must be climbing the walls! I just hope that if they had the suspicion that it was anything "nasty" they would have slotted her in asap.

I'll hold you in my thoughts - I know how I'd feel if it was my granddaughter.

I went through a neck lump episode with my son, when he was 3. It turned out to be a quinsy, but that one really swelled, and grew painful, and threw a fever over a matter of a couple of days. We ended up with him in hospital.
It's a frantic and nerve-wracking time for you, because you feel you should be doing something for them. Look after yourselves as well!

Andrea

The news is very positive! The consultant thinks that the lump is a cyst and although it will continue to grow it is not life threatening and not cancerous which is a huge relief. Amelia is now waiting for an appointment at Great Ormond Street childrens hospital for the team there to assess when they will remove the cyst. We should hear about an appointment in the next few weeks. We need to keep an eye on the lump and make sure there are no signs of infection and that it isn't affecting the position of her head and neck etc.

I have never felt so relieved before apart from the day they were all born and I heard them cry. Last night was the first night I have slept properly in weeks. Paul took me to see Chicago in the west end last night and I was actually able to sit back and enjoy the show without worrying about what might be.

Thank you all for the good wishes. I'll let you know when Amelia has the appointment at the childrens hospital and when they decide to do the operation.

A very relieved Khatt and Paul

We have just brought both George and Amelia home from hospital after what has been a very worrying 5 days. They were admitted with bronchiolitis which is a viral chest infection which children under 2 are prone to.

They needed help breathing and a feeding tube fitted as they couldn't feed due to congestion. It was horrible to see our beautiful babies trying so hard to breath and lying in the cots so distressed.

We haven't slept for 5 nights and have been functioning on autopilot. We have some wonderful friends and family though who sat with us and the babies, looked after Harry and brought us food packages.

The twins have got a chesty cough which will last for a few weeks apparently but they are on the mend and have started feeding resonably well. Their oxygen saturation is stable at 93% and we are hoping they will recover quickly. It feels SO good to be home all together.

We are taking her back on Tuesday (31st March) for an ultra sound and we get the results and a decision on what will be done on Thursday. Amelia smiled all the way through her appointment and 'chatted' to anyone and everyone that passed by!
