It seems that a schoolboy fight, albeit ellegedly one sided has been turned into attempted 2nd degree murder with a possible prison sentence of up 100 years.

Program on BBC2 7.00 p.m. tonight. I did not see the very beginning, and when I switched over they were talking about black students in a college in Jena Louisiana being prevented from sitting under a tree, which it seems had traditionally been only for white students. At least I think that was what had sparked off the trouble. It seems that when black pupils protested, somebody hung a noose from the tree, some black residents say as a warning, some white residents say as a prank. At first, I thought I was viewing a story from the sixties, except, I guess then, there would have been a black student at the end of the rope.

Equal justice...if you do the crime, you should do the time. If true the Feds will be coming down hard on Jena, LA; if not then the Feds should be coming down hard on the liars.

6 people assault one person. If it's attempted murder, the one should be dead. If he ain't dead, they weren't trying.

That is one issue.

The other is the apparently overt racism of local authorities.

Keep the issues separate.

Three of these guys are, according to the newspaper, charged with "conspiracy to commit attempted second-degree murder". Anyone have the foggiest notion what that is supposed to mean?

But - if it's "second-degree murder", doesn't that mean that it is NOT premeditated?

And if there was a "conspiracy", wouldn't it have been to commit (whatever-degree) murder? Is it possible to both "commit" and merely "attempt" a crime? Sounds like they're being charged with conspiring to commit and conspiring not quite to commit murder - so that the Prosecution can have it either way ...
