Today the Ebay prompt asked me, "What are you looking for?" So I typed in my answer, "I ask myself the same question!" and then I hopefully awaited Ebay's answer. But when the response came, I was told, "0 items found," and "Try these search alternatives..." well I knew I had simply tossed my line into the wrong creek, again.

I always seem to insist on fishing where the fish aren't. Ya know? Like I know there are no fish there, but it's where I want to find them, so I toss in my line. And then I'm pissed off when I come up empty handed.

Go figure!

Yeah, I know the feeling. I go onto Ebay hoping to find some eejit with a Martin 12-string, no reserve, two bids of $5 each, and 30 seconds left to run on the clock. I just never hit it though!!! And it annoys me so much when I look up and discover I just spent two hours looking for it!!

I really used to fish along one part of a lake near my house that wasn't too active for the fish. I knew there were better fishing spots, but I didn't want to bother with a boat or drive miles out of the way. So I fished the low productive area because I just enjoyed being there! Once in a while, I'd kick myself for wasting my time, but most of the time, I just enjoyed the experience ... and I caught the odd keeper, now and again.

Now-a-days I work the Celtic or Folk music venues. The folkies think I'm too trad, and occasoinally the Celtic folks think I'm too folky (not often, though - most Celtic venues like the mix). I know there's bigger bucks to be made elsewhere in the music world, and even things I could do make 'em. Sometimes I berate myself for not 'dropping my line in a more productive stream' (it's been a challenging year) but then I ask myself; "What are you looking for?"

I love what I'm doing. I just gotta catch a few more fish!

Great analogy. Buck Perry, the father of structure fishing, discovered early on that 90% of the water in a lake contains no fish. Fish don't just swim around in open water, they have a “home,” the deepest part of the lake, and they follow natural routes marked by bottom structure. As most of us have probably discovered, the same is true of eBay and the whole Internet… 90% of the water contains no fish.

Since Perry's pioneering work was done before high-tech locaters were available, he had to design his own tools and methods for understanding a lake's structure and quickly eliminating the unproductive spots. Perry enjoyed finding lakes that no longer produced any fish for the local fishermen, who thought they knew the lake, and bringing in a boatload of record sized fish in a relatively short time.

Google and similar tools help us eliminate the areas of the Internet that contain no fish but what about making music? What tools will help eliminate the unproductive areas?
