Subject: Any August Songs? From: GeoffLawes Date: 24 Jul 21 - 05:37 AM
-Joe Offer- Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of August ie: (A) Any songs with August in the title (B) Any songs with an August date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in August even if the lyrics do not actually say so. It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them. Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. - Regards, GeoffLawes INDEX OF AUGUST SONGS ABRAHAM, MARTIN AND JOHN ADMIRAL BENBOW ADMIRAL BENBOW aka BRAVE BENBOW AGONISING CRUEL SLAVERY DAYS ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLT by La Poudre ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLT by The Pretzel Boys ALMA ANACREONTIC SONG (THE) ANNIE YOUNG (THE) ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL APPRENTICE BOYS OF DERRY APRIL COME SHE WILL AQABA ASSASSINATION IN SARAJEVO AT THE PURCHASER’S OPTION AUGUST by Arthur Lee and Love AUGUST by Julia Nunes AUGUST by Rilo Kiley AUGUST by Taylor Swift AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER AUGUST DAY SONG AUGUST IS OVER AUGUST SONG BALLADE DE JEAN SAINT MALO (LA) BALLAD OF BONNIE AND CLYDE (THE) BALLAD OF DAVY CROCKETT (THE) BALLAD OF HERBERT LEONARD MILLS (THE) BALLAD OF MARILYN MONROE (THE) BALLAD OF RICHARD NIXON (THE) BALLAD OF ROGER CASEMENT (THE) aka BANNA STRAND BALLAD OF BRAVEHEART WILLIAM WALLACE (THE) BALLYMURPHY MASSACRE SONGS BANG BANG, ALL FOR YOU SOPHIA BANKS OF THE NILE (THE) BERLIN WALL SONGS BATTLE OF BOSWORTH FIELD (THE) BATTLE OF OTTERBURN (THE) BATTLE OF THE NILE (THE) BERLIN WALL BLUES FOR LEON TROTSKY BLYTH SANDS BONEY WAS A WARRIOR BONNIE AND CLYDE BONNIE UND CLYDE BRIGG FAIR BRITISH GRENADIERS (THE) CAESAR AUGUSTUS CANDLE IN THE WIND (Marilyn Monroe version) CANDLE IN THE WIND CAPTAIN AVERY CAPTAIN WEBB CASTLEBAR RACES (THE) CHANSON DE ROLAND CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE CHATSWORTH WRECK CHEVY CHASE CHOLERA CAMP CIRCLE GAME (THE) COCA COLA COWBOY COLD WIND IN AUGUST COLLIER THE LASS (THE) COME AND STAND AT EVERY DOOR COME BE MY LIGHT COME JOIN THE ABOLITIONISTS CONSTITUTION AND THE GUERRIER(THE) COVER OF THE NEW YORK TIMES (THE) CYPRUS BRIG DANCING ON THE BERLIN WALL DAY IN THE LIFE OF BONNIE AND CLYDE (A) DEAR AUGUST DEATH OF EMMET TILL (THE) AKA The Ballad of Emmet Till DEATH OF EMMET TILL (THE) - by The Ramparts DERRY'S WALLS DICKIE'S SUCH AN ARSEHOLE DIC PENDERYN DOG DAYS OF AUGUST DONIBRISTLE MINE DISASTER EMMET’S GHOST ENGLAND’S MOTORWAYS FANNY ADAMS FAREWELL LINCOLN CASTLE FARRAGUT’S BALL FIRST DAY IN AUGUST (THE) FOL THE DAY-O GALE OF AUGUST ’27 (THE) FROM GALWAY TO GRACELAND FUNAMBULIST GALWAY RACES (THE) GAVRILO GEORGE BUSH DOESN’T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE GLORY, GLORY APPRENTICE BOYS GO DOWN MOSES GOD’S OWN COUNTRY GOODMAN, SWERNER AND CHANEY GOOD MORNING MR COLSTON GRAF ZEPPELIN HANG OUT YOUR BRIGHTEST COLOURS - The Ballad of Michael Collins HARES ON THE MOUNTAIN HARBO AND SAMUELSON ( HAVE YOU SEEN ) BRUCE RICHARD REYNOLDS? Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: leeneia Date: 28 Jul 21 - 01:14 AM SONG OF THE DOG DAYS Here are the lyrics to my "Dog Days Song." It doesn't specify August, but what can I say. Song of the Dog Days - to the tune of The Four Maries 1.The weatherman warns of the heat wave; with cirrus like feathers on high, while the towering form of a thunderstorm surges up in southeastern sky. 2. The grasshoppers buzz by the roadside so lively, despite the long drought, and starlings wheel over yellow fields getting ready to head for the South. 3. So why do we call these the dog days? In the heat there is nary a breeze. And a sane dog's goal is a nice cool hole in the shade of the big leafy trees. 4. The butterflies visit the zinnias, [ZEEN yahs] soft orange, bright yellow and tan. There's the ghostly blur of a hummingbird finding nectar wherever it can. 5. The songbirds have gone into hiding while distant coyotes give tongue, and a redtail cries from the pale blue skies keeping track of its wandering young. 6. Come up on the porch, and we'll visit. We'll all have a glass of iced tea. There's Mary Lou and Peggy Sue and Mrs. Carmichael and me. ================ Creative Commons License: Song of the Dog Days lyrics by Eileen KCMO Chase is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. |
Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Jul 21 - 05:39 AM HARES ON THE MOUNTAIN There's Hares On The Mountain, as considerably (and tenderly) rewritten by Chris Wood, with the bit about enjoying your ice-cream in the hot August sun and getting nothing done: If all you young girls were like hares on the mountain We'd soon get our boots on and go out a-walking. But if all you young girls were like swans in the water We'd soon take those boots off and dive in there after. And if all you young girls were like stars in the dark We'd chase round the world to avoid the dawn's spark. And if all you young girls were like the sun in the morning We'd sit bleary-eyed just to see the day dawning. And if all you young girls were like rain from the sky We'd stand out in T-shirts and shun all things dry. And if all you young girls were like the hot August sun Then we'd sit out with ice-cream and get nothing done. And if all you young girls flew south like the swallow There's be nothing for it but to up sticks and follow. But if all you young girls were like my own true lover Then all you young men would love them as I love her. There's a Youtube of him and Andy Cutting singing it in a folk club. It's very grainy but it's wonderful. Chris Wood & Andy Cutting - Hares On The Mountain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDsWOZz3eec |

There is yet another August connection as well as Hiroshima, however, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuravli "The poem's publication in the journal Novy Mir caught the attention of the famous actor and crooner Mark Bernes who revised the lyrics and asked Yan Frenkel to compose the music. When Frenkel first played his new song, Bernes (who was by then suffering from lung cancer) cried because he felt that this song was about his own fate: 'There is a small empty spot in the crane flock. Maybe it is reserved for me. One day I will join them, and from the skies I will call on all of you whom I had left on earth.' The song was recorded from the first attempt on 9 July 1969. Bernes died on 16 August 1969, about five weeks after recording the song, and the recording was played at his funeral. Later on,'Zhuravli' would most often be performed by Joseph Kobzon. According to Frenkel, 'Cranes' was Bernes' last record, his 'true swan song.'" A link to more Hiroshima themed songs |

Well listen, I already got my disease So get your fucking filthy hands off of me I hope you weren't expecting me to be crucified The best that they can do Is just to hang me from the nearest tree It's midnight in San Francisco And I'm waiting here for Jesus on my knees In August and everything after I need somebody else to bleed for me In August and everything after I need somebody else to bleed for me Well, I came down from San Francisco Because I had confidence and a military mind But now everyone I know is turning showgirl And dancing with their shirt off In some Las Vegas hotel line So I'm going to New York City Cause it got a little sleazy here for me And when I find myself alone You know I'm never going home You make the changes The changes that you need But I no longer know how to pray I live in a dog town and it's a Dalmatian parade I change my spots over and over But they never seem to fade away I am the last remaining Indian Looking for the place where the buffalo roam In August and everything after Man, them buffalo ain't never coming home In August and everything after Man, them buffalo ain't They ain't never coming home No In August and everything after Man, them buffalo ain't never coming home |

Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,Tom Patterson Date: 23 Aug 21 - 08:16 PM August 24th 1917A song that recalls an incident in Blyth, Northumberland where young soldiers of the Warwickshire Regiment were preparing for service in the First World War. BLYTH SANDS The sun was out early that warm August day Our Warwickshire lads had been sent far away To a camp in the North East preparing for war Most not yet twenty so young and so raw. They'd been marching all morning in sweltering heat Sweating, exhausted half dead on their feet Arriving at Blyth Town they were ordered to rest Bathe in the North Sea before their next test. Six hundred soldiers ran onto the beach Laughing and joking along the tide's reach But the joy of that moment would soon turn to grief When the pull of the current took men underneath. Lt Colonel Chatterley sat high on his horse Anxiously watching more waves changing course His charges were swimming near to the land But the wild swirling sea was beyond his command Sgt John Riley was just back from France He dived in to save them but stood little chance Some waded out bravely grabbed five with their hands But nine lives were taken that day on Blyth Sands. The youngest to die was a boy from Kings Heath His father stood dumbstruck in sheer disbelief "This cannot have happened", poor Mrs Blunn said She couldn't accept that her Jesse was dead. At the inquest on Monday there were questions to ask Coroner Rutherford had the sad task "To swim there was madness", one fisherman claimed But the jury decided no one should be blamed. Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 01 Jun 22 - 06:29 PM SADDLEWORTH RUSHCART SONGS From An August Bank Holiday Lark by Deborah McAndrew for Northern Broadsides When the Saddleworth Rushcart was revived in 1974 the Morris men also resurrected an old song, sung by their predecessors. To the traditional tune of ‘Brighton Camp’ the Rushcarters sing the following words, taken directly from the banner of the Greenfield village ‘Armistice Cart’ of 1918: Oh the Rushcart lads are bonny bonny lads The Rushcart lads are bonny Oh they dance round 'cart and whistle like a lark And that’s as good as ony With heft and heart we pull the cart In August bright and sunny The Rushcart lads are bonny bonny lads The Rushcart lads are bonny They shoulder t’gun to fight the hun Fight as good as ony Oh the Rushcart lads are bonny bonny lads The Rushcart lads are bonny Saddleworth Morris Men sing part of the above song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PXW-IE7TZ0 With the kind permission of the Saddleworth Morris Men, Deborah McAndrew has used this song in the play, just altering the words slightly for the first Act when the young men have not yet gone to fight. On Rushcart Day the song is woven with another song, composed for this production by the great folk singer Mike Waterson just before he died. Director Barrie Rutter commissioned his friend, Mike, to write the song knowing that he was dying and would never see it performed. Cut the rushes, pile them high Stack them ‘til they reach the sky So the church be warm and dry Oh we are all rushcarters On our hats a bright bouquet Sing the summer, dance the day Come we will, if come we may Oh we are all rushcarters We are not rich, we are not poor We do not beg from door to door You have seen us all before We are all rushcarters Through the village, up the hill Round the green and by the mill Bearing rushes, dancing still We are all rushcarters Dance we did in days of yore Like our fathers did before We will dance for evermore We are all rushcarters |

Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GerryM Date: 21 Jul 22 - 10:59 PM THE SIEGE OF UNION STREET written by Alistair Hulett The liner notes say, "The Unemployed Workers Union was formed ... during the Great Depression to fight evictions by heartless landlords of destitute families for non-payment of rent.... Matters came to a head in Union Street in the inner city suburb of Erskineville in Sydney, when over a thousand militants fought a pitched battle with police that lasted several days." The first stanza goes, You should have seen us down at Erko Fourteenth August, Saturday night To Newtown, Stanmore, Enmore and Petersham Calls went out, "Workers unite!" We built a bloody great wall With planks and boards full seven foot tall We didn't mind the howling winds and sleet When we stood round the fire at Union Street Other sources (e.g., http://jcmhood.squarespace.com/newtown-eviction) say the siege took place in Newtown, not in the neighboring suburb of Erskineville, and on 19 June 1931, not 14 August (and those were both Fridays, not Saturdays), but this nitpicking does not detract from the power of the song. Here's a recording of Alistair, accompanied by Dave Swarbrick: https://youtu.be/ioD8AvSfp2c |

Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 01 Aug 22 - 12:44 AM LONDON BRIDGE IS FALLING DOWN On this day in 1831, New London Bridge was opened by King William IV. Until the mid-eighteenth century the Old London Bridge was the only crossing on the Thames in London. It was damaged in a major fire in 1633, but in the fire of 1666 this damage acted as a fire break and prevented the flames from further damaging the bridge and crossing to the south side of the Thames. With its 19 narrow arches, it impeded river traffic and flow. Central piers were removed to create a wider navigational span. Widening and the removal of its houses was completed in 1763, but it remained relatively narrow and needed continual and expensive repairs. In the early nineteenth century it was decided to replace the bridge with a new construction. New London Bridge was opened in 1831 and survived until it was replaced in 1972. At that time, the 1831 bridge was dismantled and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: The Sandman Date: 08 Aug 22 - 03:39 AM ok. it is in my songbook The Sailors Dream which is available from my websitehttp://www.dickmiles.com but here it is for mudcat. THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH FIELD (Dick Miles) 1.On the 22nd of August with glistening sword and shield. Brave Richard king of England, did fight at Bosworth Field. He led his troops in battle, and death did bravely face The White Rose did fall never more to be replaced. Chorus.A horse, a horse,my kingdom for a horse. 2.Fight on stout hearted swordsman for king and country fight. and aim you well bold archers the enemy well fright. oh take you heed Northumberland and false Lord Stanley. Have courage me lads for victorious we shall be. Chorus. 3. So thick and fast the arrows around the king did fly when to the south marching up the hill false Stanley he did spy. he mounted on his charger,to fight all for his crown The White Rose did fall never more to leave the ground Chorus 4.Unseated from his charger as on the ground lay he surrounded and out numberd by lord stanleys infantry they quickly stoop to kill as hawks high in the sky The White Rose did fall theselast words he then did cry Chorus 5.and so the last of the House of York to death did come at last He ruled his people fairly and the law for bail he passed a good and noble ruler by the Tudors so disgraced. The White Rose did fall never more to be replaced. chorus. copyright, Dick Miles. this song was written about 1984,and recorded on Cheating the Tide GVR227,with Martin Carthy playing guitar. my inspiration was a book called The Daughter of Time,by Josephine Tey,I realised that Richard the Third, had been unfairly treated by historians, and particularly by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was writing at a time when if you criticised the existing monarchy you could be executed, and had to be careful not to upset the ruling Tudor dynasty, who were close relatives of Henry the Seventh. I think this tune is suited to open guitar tuning,I played it in emodal or Eminor, but I would of course be happy for anyone to sing the song, and do it just how they want. I am not sure but I think the tune is in the dorian mode. Dick Miles Link to THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH FIELD posted above by The Sandman |

Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 31 Aug 22 - 04:03 AM 31 August 1688 John Bunyan, the Puritan preacher and author most famous for his popular allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, died on August 31, 1688. TO BE A PILGRIM aka He Who Would Valiant Be is an English Christian hymn using words of John Bunyan in The Pilgrim's Progress. It first appeared in Part 2 of The Pilgrim's Progress, written in 1684. The words were modified extensively by Percy Dearmer for the 1906 The English Hymnal. At the same time it was given a new tune by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, who used a melody taken from the traditional song "Our Captain Cried All Hands" which he collected [from Mrs Verrall] in the hamlet of Monk's Gate [near Horsham in West Sussex] – hence the name of "Monks Gate" by which the melody is referred to in hymn books. Wikipedia I can never forget singing this at school; Hobgoblin nor foul fiend can daunt his spirit; He knows he at the end shall life inherit. Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 31 Aug 22 - 05:54 AM I’D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A COKE 31 August 1900. Coca-Cola first went on sale in Britain. I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke January 18, 1971 Bill Backer, creative director on the Coca-Cola account for the McCann Erickson advertising agency, was flying to London to meet up with Billy Davis, the music director on the Coca-Cola account, to write radio commercials with two successful British songwriters, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, to be recorded by the New Seekers, a popular British singing group. [This great song was written in almost 24 hours and campaign’s directors tried to film the clip as quickly as the song.] The new budget eventually topped $250,000, a staggering amount in that era. Davis allowed a group of studio singers to record the new song lyric to "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke." They called themselves "The Hillside Singers" in order to identify with the TV image. Within two weeks of the release of the Hillside Singers recording, it was on the national charts. Two weeks after that, Davis was able to convince the New Seekers to find the time and record their version of "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony)," the new title for the song version of "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke." He took them to the studio on a Sunday and produced the record which became the Top 10 hit, followed by the Hillside Singers' version as No. 13 on the pop charts. The song was recorded in a wide range of languages and sold more sheet music than any song in the previous 10 years. The Coca-Cola Company donated the first $80,000 in royalties earned from the song by writers and publishers to UNICEF under an agreement with the writers. Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 09 Aug 23 - 10:31 PM 10 August On this day in 1842, the Mines Act was passed by the British Parliament, forbidding women and children to work underground. I praise your good intentions, Sir, I love your kind and gentle heart But now it's 1842, and you and me, we're miles apart A hundred years and more will pass before we're walking side by side But please accept my grateful thanks. God bless you Sir, at least you tried In August 1842 the Children's Employment Commission drew up an act of Parliament which gave a minimum working age for boys in mines, though the age varied between districts and even between mines. The Mines and Collieries Act 1842 also outlawed the employment of women and girls in mines. In 1870 it became compulsory for all children aged between five and thirteen to go to school, ending much of the hurrying. It was still a common profession for school leavers well into the 1920s. The 1969 song THE TESTIMONY OF PATIENCE KERSHAW by Frank Higgins (recorded by Roy Bailey and The Unthanks) is based on the testimony of Patience Kershaw (aged 17) when she spoke to the Children's Employment Commission. Her testimony includes: "The bald place upon my head is made by thrusting the corves ... I hurry the corves a mile and more underground and back; they weigh 3 cwt ... The getters that I work for are naked except for their caps ... Sometimes they beat me if I am not quick enough". It was published in My Song Is My Own (compiled by Kathy Henderson, Pluto Press, 1979). Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 15 Aug 23 - 10:15 AM Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GeoffLawes Date: 26 Sep 22 - 09:30 AM SCARBOROUGH FAIR In medieval times, Scarborough Fair lasted 45 days and started every year on August 15th. In 1891 Kidson published a version "sung by a ballad singer in Whitby streets twenty or thirty years ago". And he got a second version from Mr. A. Wardill, a railway pointsman of Goathland, refrain; Rue, parsley, rosemary and thyme. The Whitby and Pickering Railway, one of earliest railways in Yorkshire, had opened throughout on 26 May 1836. Cecil Sharp in 1913 collected a tune and three verses from Richard Hutton, aged 65, also in Goathland. Ewan MacColl claims he collected the famous melody from Mark Anderson (1874–1953), a retired lead miner from Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham in 1947. Jim Boyes, born Bridlington, 1945, and Belinda O'Hooley, born Leeds, 1971, notably perform Kidson's words to Mr Wardill's tune on Sensations of a Wound, The Long, Long Trail of Robert Riby Boyes. (No Masters NMCD44 2015). Robert Riby "Croppie" Boyes, Jim's grandfather, was bred and born in Scarborough. Jim also chose the song because of the reference to the shirt, which leads to a song later in the story. Pete Coe and Alice Jones sing the same version on the Yorkshire Garland page, The Search for Frank Kidson; https://www.yorkshirefolksong.net/kidson.cfm Scarborough Fair |

ABRAHAM, MARTIN AND JOHN is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler. The song itself is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June 1968, respectively. Well, I spent the Augusts of both 1975 and 1976 in the northern Highlands, and anyone of a certain age (me included) who was in Scotland at that time will attest that those remarkable Augusts were anything but "autumnal!" Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST,Steve Shaw Date: 07 Aug 24 - 08:55 PM Chris Wood's version of Hares On The Mountain. It's August in the third verse! What a lovely song: do YouTube it... If all you young girls were like hares on the mountain We'd soon get our boots on and go out a-walking. |

Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 24 - 05:16 AM 10 August 1842: The Mines Act was passed by the British parliament, forbidding women and children to work underground. (continued) THE COLLIER LASS; Words collected in a printed broadside by Frank Kidson Tune compiled from two traditional tunes by Mike Harding www.vwml.org/record/FK/11/107/2 Roud Number: V7863 Traditional My name’s Polly Parker, I’m come o’er from Worsley My father and mother work in a coal mine My family’s large, we’ve got seven children And so I am forced to work down the coal mine By the greatest of dangers each day we’re surrounded, I hang in the air by a rope and a chain. The mine may fall in; I may be killed or be wounded May perish by firedamp or the fire of a train. From Coal mining with folk arts and poetry Produced by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), June 2014 Written by Jayne Ambrose (NCMME), Sue Bousfield and Bryony Griffith Edited by: Frances Watt THE TRAPPER BOY’S DREAM https://lobmusiclibrary.wordpress.com/2019/11/09/the-colliers-rant-and-other-miners-ballads/ It shouldn’t be any surprise to learn there’s a large section in Lloyd’s book concerning songs about pit accidents and disasters. Mining today still has its dangers, but nothing compared to the perils of working in a Victorian-era mine. In his notes to this song, Lloyd gives the following information: The explosion at the West Moor Colliery, Killingsworth, [in 1845] occurred between two shifts. The gas was ignited by the candle of a little boy who was allowed to proceed before the men. There had been a fatal explosion at West Moor in January of the previous year, but nothing had been done to improve safety. His description of a ‘little boy’ makes me wonder whether the mine owner ignored the recently enacted Mines and Collieries Act. Here’s a couple of verses. ‘I thought that at my post I sat, upon my duty bent, When suddenly there came a sound as if the mine was rent: And then the earth rocked to and fro, and I strove for help to call For o’er my head a mass of coal hung ready to fall. ‘It swayed and tottered, still it hung, as held by secret power, and as I gazed such horrid faces round me seemed to lower. Grim demons looked with scowling eye, and nearer then they came. They smote and dashed me to the earth and turned my heart to flame.’ No recording to be found of this. Subject: RE: Any August Songs? From: GUEST Date: 28 Aug 24 - 12:06 AM 28 August 1963 Civil rights leader Martin Luther King made his “I have a dream” speech to a rally of 200,000 people in Washington. "Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler. It was first recorded by Dion, in a version that was a substantial North American chart hit in 1968–1969. Near-simultaneous cover versions by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and Moms Mabley also charted in the U.S. in 1969, and a version that same year by Marvin Gaye became the hit version in the UK. It was also a hit as part of a medley (with "What the World Needs Now Is Love") for Tom Clay in 1971, and has subsequently been recorded by many other artists. NB no music. Frederick Douglass - 2018 BBC Radio4 - In Our Time Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the life and ideas of Frederick Douglass, who was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818 and, once he had escaped, became one of that century's most prominent abolitionists. He was such a good orator, his opponents doubted his story, but he told it in grim detail in 1845 in his book 'Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.' He went on to address huge audiences in Great Britain and Ireland and there some of his supporters paid off his owner, so Douglass could be free in law and not fear recapture. After the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, he campaigned for equal rights for African-Americans, arguing against those such as Lincoln who had wanted freed slaves to leave America and found a colony elsewhere. "We were born here," he said, "and here we will remain."
