Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Genie Date: 25 Sep 10 - 07:10 PM If anyone has spare guitars with light strings and thin necks, I'd love to borrow one PRN during the Getaway. Not sure if I'll be able to bring my 3/4 size guitar, but I know I won't want to travel with a full-size one, because I don't have a heavy-duty baggage-handler-proof case. I may bring an extra washboard or two - in case anyone wants to do some hand laundry between jug band sessions. Genie |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: CupOfTea Date: 27 Sep 10 - 06:33 PM ok. I'm excited. After hearing about the Getaway for decades, I'm going to my first one. Woot! I have such great memories of the folks from the DC area from when Folk Annoyance..er.. Alliance was there. That was one of the few times at Folk Alliance when traditional singers got a decent space and drew fantastic people to sing together - making it about folk music rather than the "industry" I'd met 'em before, but that event alone made me love Judy & Dennis Cook. I'm looking forward to putting faces and voices to some of the names I've read here. I figure being new, YOU are more likely to figure out who *I* am than viceyversy, so please do introduce yourself to the wide woman from Cleveland who will usually be seen with a mug of tea in hand. I'm a bit nervous, too... will my throat cooperate? Will my fingers behave? Will I forget lyrics I've known for 25 years the way I do at an open mic? It'll be an adventure, anyhow, and a chance to see beloved friends like Caroline, Sally Rogers, the Cooks, and a chance to meet new people who may be my next decade's beloved voices. Joanne in Cleveland who is packing all the weird instruments JUST in case... |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Nancy King Date: 27 Sep 10 - 08:21 PM Art -- you bet it is! (I'll try to arrive early enough to get some...) Jerry -- Sinners are allowed in ALL workshops. Otherwise, none of us could go to any of them. PLEASE NOTE that we will be asking folks to sign up for specific tasks this year. Many long years ago, when we did our own cooking (no longer possible), each camper was required to sign up for two hours of (mostly kitchen) work. We no longer need that level of commitment, BUT in order to avoid the problem of the same people doing everything, AND to make sure the necessary tasks are accomplished, we will ask everyone who doesn't already have to a job (auction ladies, you already have jobs -- thanks!) to sign up to do a specific chore at a specific time. Many of these jobs won't even take a whole hour to complete, but they ARE important! Stuff like making sure the snack-and-drink table in the Retreat Center is stocked and clean, helping to set up/clean up after the midnight snacks, manning the registration table -- stuff like that. Sounds like we'll have a lot of new folks this year, in addition to a whole bunch of old friends. Hooray! --Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Bill D Date: 27 Sep 10 - 08:44 PM Oh my... I can see our 'success' at attracting people from all over the country and the world to the Getaway has created some awkward situations as new folks decide to 'try it'. A few years ago, when we had just a few who drove in from 'up North' it was relatively easy...and when we had 2 vans full of English chantey singers, we knew about it months in advance and organized lots of locals to provide both housing and bedding...etc. The problem is, many 'locals' never look at Mudcat, and have to be called or the requests printed in the previous months newsletter. I have picked up folks from 2 different airports in the past...especially when BWI was right on my way. This year, I have logistics problems that prevent me from personally collecting folks. I WILL ask about and see if I can locate a ride for Clare P. in Chevy Chase, but it's short notice. We need to work out a 'system'....*wry smile* I really hate for a prospective good time for folks become a tedious adventure in just getting there. Important to keep in mind... this is not a Mudcat event....Mudcat is just one way folks hear about it. **Hello all you locals who occasionally read Mudcat!** Can anyone help either Clare in Chevy Chase OR go by BWI on Friday eve.? |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Genie Date: 28 Sep 10 - 12:41 AM Another mediocre guitarist seeking instrumental backup and/or vocal harmonizer for the concert. Not sure what song I'm doing, but I'll have a lyric/chord sheet & it will either be a familiar song (to most people) or pretty easy or both. (Janie, I'd be glad to back you up on guitar on Shake Sugaree, but Amos plays purtier and he knows more than 3 chords. ) |

Anyone near enough to Raleigh to share a ride? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Sep 10 - 08:59 PM Who on earth will be wide awake at 10 am Sunday for a workshop on the poetry of Cicely Fox Smith and the songs adapted from such? I'm not sure I'll be awake but I'll be there. About 70 of her poems have so far been adapted for singing and recorded, and there are about 570 more poems to consider. The workshop will be a demonstration of how different singers have approached her poems. Please send me a PM if you're interested in leading a particular poem as a song. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

One of my (so many) favorite things about the Getaway is the singing finally stopping and you realize the sky is getting light. You think about taking a wee nap, but then the sunrise colors on the water are so beautiful. A cup of coffee and you've convinced your brain you slept like a baby. |
