Eisteddfod was indeed a wonderful festival this year. I have been to all of them since they started in New York, and this was the best for me. I felt the glow for days after it.

It is hard to find a time and place that's good for everyone. The first few years it was at Brooklyn Polytech in the summer. Jackson Heights in Queens at the Renaissance School in November is much better. I feel we have been building up an audience there. The Friday night concert audience may have been small, but Saturday night was much better attended. Many local people came for part of the festival. I'd like to see us build more of an audience of people who live in New York. And if more people from out of town can overcome their fear of the Big City, I think they'd find that Jackson Heights is easier to get to than they think. There is a parking garage a block from the festival which cost me only around $25 for all of Saturday (cheap by New York standards) and on Sunday it was easy to park on the street for free.

Hope to see more of you next year.

Jerry and all-

I would have loved to be there. The location didn't keep me away; finding a way to get there from Maine and back home again was a problem. Leaving in the middle of harvest was the most significant difficulty for me. A not-to-be-missed very special house concert complicated the issue in a delightful way.

It all sounds wonderful and I hope one day to join you. Thank you all for the hard work and inspiration that go into this extraordinary festival. I appreciate being able to read the posts in this thread.

Thanks to the "computer from hell", I'm only now really back on line to comment on the really fun weekend we had.

It's always a blast to be at a folk event and suddenly realize that the person net to me is a fellow mudcatter.... at a past Mystic Sea Music festival it turned out that three quarters of the gang sitting there at the Seaman's Inn were all mudcatters.

Since I had volunteer duties, I didn't get as much time to spend with the mudcat gathering as I would have liked - but what I did get to share was fun and we got to share songs and stories.

This is a hidden gem of a festival and Mike & I drive in from western New York to partake of the varied workshops and concerts. This year we stayed with friends who live near the school were it was held and that was a real boon. Carpooling is definitely the way to go, given the need to find a parking space.

I hope we can arrange another get together next year.

Rich,

The gathering took place at the 2008 Eisteddfod New York Traditional Music Festival in Jackson Heights, Queens, the weekend of November 14-16. Sorry you missed it this year.

It is heartening to read a lot of the posts above from people who were there both musicians and audience. It is, however, discouraging that so many who would have been wild for it did not get there. Taking into account that I am obviously prejudiced, I don't remember when I have ever seen such an event for people who are really into the traditional material done in the old way and for the old reasons.

I always try to put together people in a session who will bounce off each other in a way to make sparks fly. When the musicians are really really turned on and blown away. . . . well you get it. Obviously I could not see all the sessions, or even parts of them, so I welcome any who will post about sessions not yet mentioned.
Before I give some of my own highlights, I will say that we do have digital recordings of all of the main concerts and of all the workshop sessions that took place in the auditorium. Don Wade of course has no time to do much with this, but if there is a particular session that lots of folks ask for (like "I Love New York"), I can prod him to do something toward making it available online. I will certainly try.

I will take the liberty at the bottom of this to say something of the frustration at the staggering difficulty of getting people to attend such a truly incredible event.

By a wide margin, the music that got the most raves (and damned near everything got raves from both performers and audience) was Discanto. People kept asking "Where did you find them?" Actually, they found us, since they were coming to the East coast of the US anyway. They were absolutely stunning, instrumentally, vocally, and folklorically (is that a word?). Just brought down the house at every session from an audience that is very highly sophisticated and has no interest in glitz. From the East coast of Italy, a lot of the material from shepherds, a fabulous double-chanter bagpipe (the Zampogna), powerful vocals (their American contact checked with me because they were a little worried that their singing might not be polished or refined enough. . . . . "Oy vay, have I got a festival for you", said I). A tremendous thing to have gotten them, a once in a lifetime experience, some said.
Only George has mentioned so far Len Graham. I have no doubt that he is among the finest or perhaps the finest Irish traditional singer of the current generation. I first heard Len on a recording in 1979 in my first UK tour from a host of mine in Birmingham. I said "This is a young Joe Heaney".
Pat Conte is indeed a treasure. He asked me after his Friday night concert set, "Was it too esoteric?". . . Oy vay, have I got a festival for you. . . . I thought it was spot on. . . Well ok, it was not easy to understand the words. . . just like his sources. . . . .
The session that I think BrooklynRose mentioned, which I called "Black and White in Color", was exactly what I had wanted when I put together three acts that had never met and never heard each other. Norris Bennet is a black singer and instrumentalist, born in Florida, but the bulk of his material is Southern Mountain (white) ballad and string band stuff. Pat Conte, white boy that he is, most of his material is from Black traditions which he has soaked himself in inside and out, and Bill and Livia Vanaver do a bunch of similar type things (but different) from the Georgia Sea Islands and other places. How can it lose? It was nothing short of magic.
We had two big ballad sessions, one on North America and one on over the ocean. I was in the first, but not in great shape since I managed about 2 hours sleep Friday night. But the second was a complete knock out. Too many performers for the stage, and all of it fabulous.
A session that I really regretted missing was "Irish at Home and Away", with stuff as diverse is Len Graham and Barry O'Neill. widely divergent repertoires but I knew it couldn't be anything but great. I would be happy to see a comment from any that saw that session.
The "Voices in Harmony" session that someone mentioned above, with Michele and Sara from Discanto, Dave and Anni, and John and Tony was also fabulous, and what was so moving about it (this always gets me) was how much the performers were totally loving what they were hearing from the other performers. Just the "wow" look on people's faces -- well ok, I admit a lot of the 'wows' were for the pair from Discanto.
And finally I have to mention that giving the Eisteddfod Award to John and Tony was I think quite moving at the concert on Saturday night. I think I handled this one well, which has not always been the case, and it had a good touch of humor (some from the fact that the first making of the plaque had "Tony Barrano" -- like big Tony with the concrete shoes. . . . ), and also I think a special warmth from the amount of dedication to the real tradition and the amount of inspiration provided to so many, especially the next generation.

Now the frustration and the future. We know there will be a festival next year; we do not know where. The problems of bringing people to New York are simply insurmountable. The amount of feedback from so many people trying to tell their friends saying that as soon as people hear that it is in NEw York, they simply flatly refuse to consider coming. This really stabs me in the gut, first because it is so utterly stupid, and second because it is in my city where I was born and that I think is a fabulous place. I tried this year (as did others) to strongly make the point wherever I could that it was not necessary to drive into the center city at all to get there, and when you left the Interstate from any direction you were 5 minutes from the school. No effect as far as I could see. Jackson Heights is easy to get to, relatively easy to park (vastly easier than say Cambridge), has as fabulous an array of restaurants as can be found anywhere. . . OK The motels are a bit more expensive than in rural areas. . . . (but a lot cheaper than Manhattan). It just makes no sense to me that people find NY so terrifying that they wom't even think about it. But we cannot pretend that this is not the case.

But it is real rough when at the Friday night concert, with George Ward, Dave Ruch, Pat Conte, and David Jones, we had an audience, after subtracting the other performers and volunteers, of maybe 40 tops. Blows me away.

There is no point in my being negative, it is what it is. I think this problem is unlikely to improve to any significant degree, and we are beginning discussions on what to do for the future. . . yes, there will definitely be a festival. . . . somewhere. . . .

But it was a truly fabulous, memorable event. . . . And that part is amazingly gratifying. I know the committee will welcome any communication from those who care about this stuff, either via this board or directly by email. Dave Ruch has already volunteered to be helpful in any way he can.

OK, all have consented and the Songs of New York State set is now up at archive.org. It's actually NOT an ideal recording at all, as the recorder was right at my feet and consequently picks up twice as much of me as anything else (mandolin on the first tune for instance), and the archive.org site squished it down a little bit so the resolution isn't great, but I think the value in the songs and how they were presented comes through loud and clear.

I'll try to get the "official" recording of the set from the festival, which should sound lots better and more professional, but in the meantime, here it is....

What a labor of love Eisteddfod is (and there's plenty of labor for the few devoted hands who pull it off) ! Wonderful vibe this year, and more great moments and artists than One should try to squeeze into a single post.

Discanto, a terrific Italian group from Abruzzo, was a revelation. And in the aforementioned NYS concert, listening to Dave Ruch and Jeff Davis channelling William Sidney Mount's Long Island fiddle repertoire was an immediate delight and a historical revelation all at once.

Ballads ? New Songs in the Tradition? Harmony ? Traditional singers as compelling as Colleen Cleveland ? It had 'em all. And then there was Len Graham, whose lifetime of collecting and singing the songs of Northern Ireland (or perhaps collecting the singers of those songs as friends and mentors) enables him to set every one so you can imagine yourself in the community in which the song really lived.

Oh, and if you had stringband joneses, the festival ended with the Wreck Room Stringband. No you haven't heard of them, Yes, you should regret that, but it's not really your fault. These guys - who get together about once a year and then vanish like the wee folk under the hill - have been doing what they do for over thirty years. And they can put to shame most of the professional stringbands and bluegrass groups you'll ever hear.

They have taste and heart, those few who put the Eisteddfod together. And its originator and guiding spirit, Howard Glasser, is still around to remind us what joy there is in the music and the bond we share in it.

So it's in Queens. People go there every day (most of them were on whatever street I chose to be on). It's worth it. It is one of those labors of love that deserves our support and repays it with interest.

It is why I do this stuff at all.

- George

Pat and I enjoyed ourselves immensely at Eisteddfod-NY yesterday. I was so honored to be a part of such a distinguished class of people. I
felt part of a wonderful community. I will support this community for years to
come. Music like this must stay alive, and the only way it can, is by people who
are passionate and who truly love this music. But it also stays alive by more
people being exposed to it.

I really enjoyed a workshop on songs of New York State with Colleen Cleveland, Jeff Davis, Barry O'Neill, Dave Ruch, & George Ward. Many of them have performed together in other venues. What depth of knowledge they shared: low key presentations, very very good singing, and a range of types of songs.
A very interesting workshop featured Pat Conte, Norris Bennett, and Bill and Livia Vanaver; these people had not appeared with one another before. They began trading ideas and built into a really sizzling exchange of music and exposition of ideas, including some discussion of why they played certain songs in certain ways.
Anni Fentiman and Dave Webber had been at Pinewoods Camp, and I believe will direct Folk Music Week in 2009. They sing wonderful harmonies, know zillions of traditional songs and create songs that are becoming part of our tradition.
If you have not heard Colleen Cleveland sing, run, do not walk, to her next performance. She is a really really superlative singer.
Norris Bennett is also an amazing singer & instrumentalist.
I did not mention John Roberts & Tony Barrand. You know how good they are.
Because Eisteddfod is so small, even intimate, we had the opportunity to interact with the performers, and all of those I just mentioned seem to be very nice people.
      This was an amazing festival.

A harmony workshop with John Roberts and Tony Barrand; Anni Fentiman and Dave Webber; and Michele and Sara members of DisCanto [www.discanto.net], a band featuring music from Abruzzo, Italy. The walls vibrated with the harmonies as each duo took its turn. There were plenty of seats....unfortunately. Make plans now for next year.

However, my niece Lisa from Israel and her new husband are scheduled to land at JFK that morning at 6:10. If the plane is on time and US Immigration and Customs isn't too backed up, they should be at my house by 8:30 at the latest, probably sooner. That should give me enough time to let them in and get to the Renaissance Charter School by 10:00. It's under one hour by walking, which is my preferred mode of transportation these days. I figure 15 minutes by car or 20 by bus.

We still need volunteers for the festival. If you can help with logistics for 6 hours, you get a free ticket for the whole weekend, breakfast & lunch, and participation in the post-festival party with the performers. Hi Deborah
I didn't know there was anyone performing that's near to the southern NH area. Hopefully some one that's going will spot this thread.
Thanks for bringing attention to my looking for a ride.

Barry

A "Mudcatters Hello" session is a great idea. I'll try my best to be there, so please put my name down.

Check our other thread, "Eisteddfod 2008," for more comments and information.   It seems likely there will be a "Mudcatters Hello" session on Saturday (early afternoon).   Who's thinking of coming to that? How are you doing, Barry, at finding people to share the drive from New Hampshire?   You might contact some of the performers, who will be coming from Vermont or New Hampshire.
Deborah

Glad to hear you're thinking of coming.   I'm in NYC, but I'm looking forward to meeting some Mudcatters in person.
Deborah

Re: Eisteddfod in New York November 14-16:
In addition to the Wreck Room String Band, who are terrific, John Roberts and Tony Barrand will be there to received the Eisteddfod lifetime award for their contribution to traditional music.   It will be a great chance to see them in an intimate setting.   Other great musicians, too! AND IT IS POSSIBLE TO PARK near the concert--so don't stay away because it's in the city.   (It's in Queens.)

Have you seen the new festival performers listed at http://www.eisteddfod-ny.org ? The Wreck Room String Band consists of Jerry Devokaitis, Dave Howard, Dave Kiphuth, Neil Rossi, & Phil Zimmerman, very good musicians. Should be fun at the Mudcat Gathering.

Jerry Epstein is the festival director. All suggestions concerning program should be sent to him at jerepst@att.net with Eisteddfod in the subject line.

Please be aware that the program for 2008 is nearly complete. There will, however, be an area set aside for Mudcatters to gather and do their own thing, so to speak.

Sure the restaurants in Jackson Heights are outstanding, but the Eisteddfod performers are the reason to come. When I look at the list above, I don't know who to rave about first. I guess Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman: They were at Pinewoods Camp in 2006, and they were terrific. They are good singers and have good stage presence, but they are also very very knowledgable, and they are friendly. They don't get to the U.S. too often, so the Mudcat Gathering at Eisteddfod-NY is a good chance to hear them.
Who would you pick to rave about?

Rosalie Friend (posting above) is correct that I gave the wrong email address for those who want to inquire about discount on motel rooms in the area of the Eisteddfod festival. Anyone interested can use the info@eisteddfod-ny.org address given by Rosalie, or you can email me at jerepst@att.net. (Please don't copy and paste the address given above, it is missing one letter).

My apologies for the error.
