Weelittledrummer had a previous thread about this programme but on an earlier date. It is being repeated so for those that missed it

Jake On The Box

Retrospective on the TV career of Jake Thackray

Monday 3 November, 11.20pm BBC2

03 Nov 2008 23:20 BBC Two (except BBC Two Wales)
Exploring the life and work of Jake Thackray, the undervalued genius famous for his biting satire and understated irony. A rare example of a British singer-songwriter in the troubadour tradition, Thackray could be darkly vicious, but was also able to write haunting and romantic songs. His words and music have influenced a generation of musicians and writers.

Interviewing Danny Baker, Ralph McTell and Sheila Thackray, we investigate the man and his work, and in particular his relationship with the great troubadour George Brassens, whom Jake persuaded to visit Cardiff in the 1970s.

The BBC does not have any Thackray on DVD. Some really good stiff survives and some of us tried a year or so ago to get a licence from the Beeb to reproduce the best of it but were quoted a seriously silly cost per broadcast minute which was way beyond our means.

Recorded all but the first two minutes. I didn't realise it wasn't on BBC2 Wales, and had to re-tune.

This brought back so many memories. I went to see hime with my brother in 1979.

But unfortunately I didn't get to see the whole thing and did not record it.

Diplomatically. what are the issues trying to get some kind of copy of this?

Well, Andy, I see it is withheld from the many progs now available for replay on the BBC website, which might mean either a contractual constraint or that the Beeb is planning to release a DVD. (It sounds like they have more material available, as they played a bit of footage from some stuff they unearthed which has never previously been aired.) You must just hope a friend recorded it.

This was a better show than such shows often are. Whoever made it must have realised that the usual format - five-second snatches of the subject himself, interspersed/voice-overed with endless waffle from ill-assorted pundits - wasn't going to work with lyrics as complex as Thackray's. So we were actually treated to him singing several of his (quite lengthy) songs, and they were allowed to run from beginning to end without interruption.

The guy emerged as more of a genius - and a better musician - than I had realised at the time. For ingenious lyrics he's right up there with Ian Dury!

I did a recording with Jake for BBC radio, it was called "Humoresque" which was a series introduced by the late Tony Capstick.

It was recorded live at "The Old Profanity Show Boat" in Bristol.

Has anyone got a copy of the recording? I would love to hear it after all these years.

There is quite a lot of stuff in the BBC archives, the best of which is the Jake Thackray and Songs series from 1981 (On Again On Again and The Bull in the documentary came from this series) and The Camera and the Song from 1973 or so. There is also material from Braden's Week, That's Life and the Dora Brian Show(!) as well as some other odds and ends. There is also likely to be more which is misfiled.   Those of us who are behind the www.jakethackray.com website have copies of most of it as well as some other odds and ends. We've put some of it out but are trying to do so in a way which ensures appropriate royalties go to Jake's estate. We also have some good soundboard recordings from gigs and some video material which we plan to release in due course (ie when the day jobs don't get in the way)
As I mentioned in an earlier post, the main issue with the BBC (who are otherwise very helpful) is the commercial structure which is in place for licensing archive material. If we can crack that then we can get the material out to those who appreciate it.

Ian
