Dan... I am sure everyone would like to believe that calling the cops was the best way to go or, HOPE it would be that way. Sometimes, one knows in one's heart that another avenue is required in a particular situation. That's what happened. No big deal. Ya done good. You took care of things and you didn't go overboard with it. I am cool with that and I admire you for your restraint.

Thanks you my brothers, it really isn't the correct way but was one way to at least make a statement without harming anyone.   Younger guys are always much much faster, stronger and more aggressive. It is the aggression that is their down fall and why they always lose. when you know what is coming and from where it is easy to stop it in a gentle manner.

From an Associated Press article on new laws going into effect on January 1; this one is in California:

Photographers who harass celebrities and their children face tougher penalties under a law backed by actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner, who testified in favor of it. Berry told lawmakers her daughter has been intimidated by aggressive photographers who follow them daily. Those who take photos and video of a child without consent and in a harassing manner could face up to a year in county jail and a fine of up to $10,000. They also can be sued for damages and attorney's fees under the new law, which media organizations opposed. Supporters say it also will help protect the children of police officers, judges and others who might be targets because of their parents' occupations.

It has to apply to all children, and that's good.

While we are all in favour of protecting children from all kinds of abuse , the downside is when 'People' decide to take the law into their own hands , resulting in Fathers , Grandfathers , and other older male relatives falling foul of idiots when they are out with young relatives .
Or the recent case where a man took photographs of young hooligans vandalising his property and was arrested as a paedophile !

Not so, Eliza. Popular myth. But the school is a private building and has the power to prevent any photography on it's premises. It can also suggest that parents give their permission for photographs and no set of parents has the power of veto, if the majority give their permission, unless there are exceptional circumstances. It is the 'against data protection' or suggesting that innocent activities are illegal brigade that make it so difficult to enforce sensible measures against illegal activities.

I suggest you look up the facts for yourself.

Sorry you had this nasty experience olddude. And full marks for dealing with it in your own way. In UK, if the creep was asked to go away by the nursing mother and continued annoying her, that's harassment, and the Police could be asked to intervene. I reckon once the Police had been asked to deal with the scumbag, they'd have known what his game was and would have taken investigations further, including having a look at his computer. Not so sure about US law but in Britain Assault is technically raising a hand or fist with intent or provocation. Battery has to involve physical contact. viz the distinction between assault and battery. If either are unwanted there is a case in law. As I understand it most US States have slightly differing laws anyway but owe a lot to British Law. Except Louisiana which owes more to French thinking.

I think any personal confrontation has warned the guy that he is in immediate danger if he does anything he knows will offend. The loss of the phone is not as high on his priorities.

I moderate an organic gardening site with open registration to join. The moderators kick out spam, and we get regular spurts of porn. The absolute awful bottomfeeders are the child porn folks, and they post photos. You'll often see text that talks about clothed children - clearly meant to be sexualized children, like women in lingerie versus nude women. But in these photos it is girls in dresses, boys in school clothes, etc. It's the suggestion that goes behind the motivation for posting any photos that is the crime.

To attempt to take a picture of a woman nursing her baby without that woman's permission, especially if the woman has told the picture-taker to go away, is a crime. It would be a crime if someone did it to me, and the last baby I nursed I was holding a bottle (not being built to do otherwise).

Taking pictures of children without their parents' permission is not just creepy, it could be illegal if the pictures are used in any way. There's a good reason that photographers use forms for taking kids' pictures! Family members, sure -- but not strangers.

Let the Feds deal with it.

I've quite often whacked cigarettes out of people's hands and stamped them out when they were smoking in places they shouldn't have done. And I didn't have a "lifetime of training" in doing it. A mobile phone is more expensive but the idea is the same.

Not from olddude's description he wasn't. Taking pictures that are in no way indecent in a public place is not a crime of any sort, no matter who the subject is. It might be creepy and suggest he's done other things the police might be interested in, but that's all.

I probably should have but I didn't want to drag my kid into it. He assaulted her when he was grabbing the blanket while she was nursing. She was careful not to alert me cause she knows me too well but I saw it. I didn't hurt anyone but I have to say lucky it was just the cell that broke

Sounds like the parking lot maneuver was one way to slow him down, but if he had his phone set to upload his photos as he took them (as I have mine set) then he still has all of his photos. Better to have taken his photo and splashed it around, along with turning in his "lost" phone to the police.

Had a wonderful Holiday, took my family on a Santa Train ride. All families cars full of little kids with dinner etc. Wonderful time. But on the train by himself was this creep. He would walk around taking pics of just the little girls. Then he would follow the high school girls dressed as elves and ask them to pose for him and taking pics. I hear one high school girl say that guy is a creep keeps following me. Next thing I know he is in my daughters face snapping pics while she is covered with a blanket trying to nurse my granddaughter. I could hear her say get out of here.

Well I see everything even when people think I don't. After the train ride I went to the parking lot to say Happy Holidays. Apparently he is very clumsy cause his phone somehow got dropped and stepped on. When I suggested the police station we could go together he decided that maybe Santa would give him a new phone and left.
