A particular knife has started to be moved and then suddenly reappeared then put away in the drawer.
have moved this knife neither of us any suggestions how to calm whoever has taken to hiding this implement.

Don't want to alarm you unnecessarily, but this is happening more and more in my old mums's house.

I get frequent phone calls that something important has gone missing, only to turn up in odd places hours or days later.

She found her missing letter from the Housing Association
neatly folded with a pile of other documents in the washing machine.

I've sat and witnessed her picking things up, then with no apparent reason moving them somewhere completely at random,
with no awareness of what she is doing, or any immediate recollection of moving them.

Mum has an appt with the memory clinic specialist Dr next week...

As I said... don't want to worry you..... it must be the mischievous little people... 😬

in fact I recently did a gig at Bodmin folk club after a seven hour coach journey and sold 6 cds and had no memory problems with songs or accompaniments, or where i was supposed to be, or where i was going to, so feck off with your smart arse comments. you twerp.

It happens. The weirdest I ever had was when I was fitting more memory in a PC. Move it all into the middle of the room. Checked everything working ok and sat beside it. Took it to bits, fitted memory, put it back together ... No keyboard. It was there before, I hadn't moved , it must be here ... No, no sign. After five minutes I got up, looked around once more, then went to the study where it was before and picked up a spare keyboard. Went back ... And there was the original, exactly where it should be.

Two things, Dick.

1) You may have a poltergeist.

2) You aren't concentrating on where you put the knife in the first place so when you finally locate it in strange places it's a surprise. I do that frequently. Have since I was a teenager.

Please understand I'm not making fun of you.

If it is a poltergeist, is this its first 'appearance' at your house? Not all ghosts--for lack of a better term--are bad or evil, Spielberg notwithstanding. I'd opt for #2 first because real poltergeists are fairly rare.

Could be a bean-tighe if you're lucky -- the house-woman, who keeps things neat and tidy. They like fresh strawberries with cream. If you're not lucky it could be a clurichaun, and they'll drink you out of house and home, but they're usually good companions.

Aw C'mon this could be interesting and fun. A lot of people experience weird stuff that defies logic. I've got a couple of crackers from childhood that still puzzle me.
       Here's one to give Steve Shaw comfort, so as not to take anything I say to heart as I'm batshit.
       I'm aged about 10 and Mom's in the garden hanging washing and talking over the fence to nextdoor. The twintub is in front of the sink and I start fecking about with the water and pipe and flooded the floor.
       The next room is the dining room and the hoover was out...so I know, I'll hoover it up quick before she comes in. Instead of getting down to it my attention turned to the full sink and started to try and find a sweet spot where the suction would raise the water up, but not up the pipe. I got really into it and was deep in concentration and in a world of my own happy as larry.
         A voice 18" to 2f above my head commanded "get out of the kitchen now" I didn't look up but it's presence sucked the chi out of me, and bent crooked I shot out the back door and was shaking like a leaf. My mate on his bike was coming down the park next to our house and pulled up,seen me and said fxxxing hell what's up with you,but I didn't say.
      So what was it,that told me as a ten-ish yr old child stood in water in bare feet messing about with electricity in the kitchen, to stop. I don't know but it did happen. Was it a one off episode of schizophrenia and luckily the timing was spot on. Was it my own subconscious warning me, haven't a clue. Took me about a week to stop creeping out about it.

You also put up a nice pic of Bude canal that I asked for. Used to love that stretch when I used to fish. You probably don't remember as it is a bit ago now, oh and I used my real name then for a good while. You're still fekin high maintenance btw ;-).
         No the above wasn't what initially got me into consciousness,just an odd one that still baffles me.

I'm frequently putting things down and unable to find them a minute later

- usually screwdrivers and mini torches -

I attribute it to my poor close up eyesight, having to take my glasses off,
and concentrating too intensely on the job at hand, and literally right in front of the tip of my nose
[risky, I ought to wear safety goggles],
that I neglect to mentally register where I lay down tools I've just used..


Anyway, I think we all have a pretty tenuous grasp on reality at the best of times...

.. but then I grew up in the west country on an adolescent diet of cider and mushroomz...

My memory is already f@cked... 😜

Well, I spent 12 plus years in an old house museum where I saw and experienced a number of unexplained things. One of them was when a docent, there for the summer, asked me to come to her bedroom to help her find her red socks so she could go do her laundry. I helped her move things around but they were not to be found. She decided that they had to wait until next time and left. Some time later she came back upstairs and I heard her call me: Oh, she said. You found them! I hadn't been back in her room but in the middle of her white chenille bedspread (remember those?) were her red socks.

A tenant told me, the manager of an apartment building years later, that she was moving, that her unit was haunted, that she had seen a dinner fork fly across the room.

I told the owner that I would move into that unit, that I didn't give a flying fork about it. :) PS I never saw anything mid-air.

I have refreshed a former thread of mine called An Odd Unexplained Incident, which deals with a similar occurrence, as some of the responses there might help to explain Dick's experience here. Not that any explanation was actually forthcoming. These things just do happen from time to time, & no-one ever really seems to get to the bottom of them.

My real problem with the little people is that they NEVER seem to get your coffee to you on time. Often the scone or doughnut isn't as fresh as it could be, and they are sooooooooo lacking in a knowledge of their proper station in life!

I don't even believe in all that - stuff - but I once heard my mum tell me to slow down, just as though she was sitting in the back seat of the car.

Naturally I put my foot on the brake, and around the corner there was a tractor and trailer and hay bales all over the road. The corner of the trailer was just where I'd have ended up if I'd not slowed down before the corner.

Even though by then it had dawned on my that my mother was long gone I turned around and looked at the back seat - just in case.

RnC's post triggered a vague recollection of reading about someone experiencing the exact same phenomena.   
             Anthony Peake is his name and he will be on ytube. He was driving and was told turn/dont turn, I can't remember the exact details, but listening saved his life by avoiding a pile up. He left his career and spends his time writing books and researching it.
            If I remember right he calls it the Daemon as past cultures have, but I can't get anymore specific as I'm not sure as it's been a while. He has some 'interesting thoughts on deja vu too.

Steve S, you miss out on some just plain good fun. One needn't sign onto supernatural gobblygook to grasp that there are things that one simply doesn't understand.

Me, I happen to suspect that we are surrounded by the unexplained- and can cite examples 'til the cows come home. And that doesn't mean, if pushed to it, that I won't admit that the mind is a wondrous thing.

The point is that it is fun to just imagine.

That brings to mind two ways of looking at a common phenomenon: the placebo effect.

#1: It is amazing and disgusting how easily fooled the human mind is.

OR

#2: It is amazing that we don't yet accept how much on our side our brains and bodies are.

One night, before bed, as usual, I put my glasses down on my bedside table.

In the morning, I went to put them on, and they weren't there. Figured I must have taken them off, absentmindedly, someplace else in the house after shutting down the computer while going through my "Toddling off to bed" routine (I've known that I have a 'flighty poet's' brain since I was about 7 years old, so this is nothing alarming).

But I searched every surface within reach -- first, in all the usual places where I pause to do something, and then in all the other places I where it was possible to put them. Still, no glasses...

Finally, around two in the afternoon, while doing another sweep of the house, I glanced down and saw them on the floor -- directly under the the table, and the spot where I had put them. They were even in the exact same orientation in which I remember placing them (open, right side up, with the earpieces facing the bed).

...Now, if I'd somehow knocked them off during the night, or one of the cats had, I'd expect them to be on the floor near the edge of the table. If they'd fallen and bounced, somehow, I'd expect them to be flipped over, or facing a different way.

But this looked as though they had somehow dropped down in a straight line through the table and rematerialized on the floor below. I still have no firm idea of how or why it happened. But, just in case I share my house with a Person of Peace, I laughed out loud and congratulated the prankster(s) on the cleverness and subtlety of the joke. I also said "Thank you" for returning my glasses before the end of the day.

Good manners, and a cheerful habit, are no guarantee that you'll be treated well. But holding a grudge and bad manners are a guarantee that you won't.

peering down a hall into another room and then under the table
and chairs. I couldn't see that anyone was hiding in any of those
places. But I'd look back to Monica, and Voila! The milk had
vanished! Mirabile Dictu! We came, in time, to blame the
disappearances on "the Milk Sneaker".

To this day, if something is missing in our house we blame it
on The Milk Sneaker, The Comb Sneaker, The Glasses Sneaker, or
some other member of the multitudinous Sneaker clan who populate
our abode.
