Hi, Thanks for the nice comments! Just a reminder to visit Gordon's site often for the latest concert dates, reviews, and song samples(wav and mp3 files) you can listen to. Of course, Gordon's fans can also purchase his music directly from the site(shameless plug!) This Mudcat site has wonderful resources for Gordon Bok fans, including the lyrics to many of his most popular songs and midi tracks of the basic melodies. I am adding a link to Mudcat.org from Gordon's site. I hope to hear suggestions and comments from Gordon's fans who visit his site: http://www.gordonbok.com. Thanks! Dave Doolittle, webmaster

I've been a fan of Gordon's (Carol too) since I was a baby. My parents would play his soma-like voice so I might fall asleep. Actually it made me pretty much manic as hell so they decided to play Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" over and over---and over and over---and over again. As a rusult I couldn't get to sleep at all. I'll be 59 years old on my next birthday and I've not slept at all since those far off days when Gordon's voice kept me awake. I can still remember those wet diapers and the interesting aroma. Don't get me wrong, ANOTHER LAND MADE OF WATER is still one of my favorites. I know Kevin Kostner stole the idea for his epic flop film WATERWORLD, but that's another story. Even though I love Gordon's music, please have him come in here and tell us what the hell ANOTHER LAND is all about. It's the least he could do for those of us who have learned to love it like Dr. Strangelove learned to love the bomb.

Love to him and Carol,

Art Thieme

Like Art, I've been listening to Gordon Bok's incredible voice all my life, and it seems like half the songs I know and often sing are Bok songs that my mother sang to me when I was growing up... He is truly one of my very very favourite folkies. I always loved that he wasn't only a singer but a storyteller too... His songs and stories will always play in my head.

On that note, can anyone tell me the tune for the last two lines of the little song in Peter Kagan and the Wind?

-Jessica

Hi Jeri,
your blue clicky does not work!
This is because
1. you gave no protocol "http:" in the href (ok, it is not always necessary)
2. you forgot the two slashes "//".
Without the slashes at the beginning the url is interpreted as local to the current directory (the directory the site containing the link is in).
With one slash at the beginning the url is interpreted as local to the webserver's root directory (webserver's root directory is not necessarily the same as the root directory of the machine the webserver is running on). With two slashes at the beginning the url is interpreted as global.
As the Gordon Bok pages are neither in the directory of this thread nor on the Mudcat webserver, you have to give two slashes (and it is always good to give the protocol). So the url should have looked like "http://www.gordonbok.com/"
Here is the (hopefully working) Blue Clicky Thingy Gordon Bok Page

Kendall, thanks for the tip! I was lucky enough to be at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop in 1989 or so when Gordon was on the faculty. He taught a class called "Things to Do With More than One Voice" which was basically a chance to sing fun stuff he'd arranged (most taken from the recently put-together February Tapes), and listen to him talk about singing and sailing and songs, for an hour and a half four days running. Although there were only about twenty in the class, at the student concert we had about a hundred people who had learned Wind Calling during the week, all singing it. (That's the song that is sung by the sea people in Another Land Made of Water: Call now the wind to thee, Go as you may go...) Gordon told us the song really did have the power to call the wind--and sure enough, that night there was a tremendous wind that broke branches on trees. It was a time I won't soon forget. Thanks again for telling us about the site.

Aloha,
Mark

Hi Kendall-

Sure, what I want exactly is this-

The song within Peter Kagan and the Wind, which Bok sings-

Kagan, Kagan, Kagan Don't go out to sea Stormy winds and seas may blow And oh but I do fear for thee...

(sorry if the words are a little messed up, I'm taking them from recent memory) How do the third and fourth lines go? Obviously sheet music would be most helpful, or a midi... but whatever you can give me, because for the life of me I can't remember, and I very much want to tell this!

Cheers, Jessica

I had the pleasure of singing on that album Another land..etc. Ok Jessica.. it goes like this:

Kagan Kagan Kagan bring the dory home the wind and sea do follow thee and all the ledges calling thee.

Kagan, Kagan, Kagan dont go out to sea the stormy wind and snow do come and oh but I do fear for thee

Kagan, Kagan, Kagan, bring the dory home the wind and sea do follow thee and all the ledges calling thee

Kagan, Kagan, Kagan, turn thee now to me turn thy back now to the wind and all the weary windy sea.

Kagan Kagan Kagan lay thee down to sleep for I do come to comfort thee all and thy dear body keep.

This piece of work always turns my insides to jello..

Oh Kendall, I'm sorry.. I guess I'm not making myself clear. I have all the words to the story and song. What I need is the tune itself. it's more difficult, I know.... if you can manage it, I'll be in your eternal debt.

Cheers,

-Jessica

MudGuard, thanks. I don't know why I can copy the URL directly from the address window when I'm at the web page, paste it into the message, and still have it come up looking like it's a page at Mudcat. From now on, I'll do a better job of checking the URLs.

Kendall, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all the lines are the same tune. It's not so much a song on its own but lines sung within the story - sort of a refrain.

I have this album - Seal Djirl's Hymn - and love it. Sit back on a cold winter's night with the wind howling, get a cup of cocoa, wrap up in a blanket, light the fire and a couple of candles, and listen...

The melody, with guitar tablature, for not only the song, but for the entire instrumental presentation, may be found in Gordon's songbook, Time and the Flying Snow, published by and available from Folk-Legacy. Visit our web site, too: CLICK HERE.

Kendall-

While I would dearly love to own the album, I am but a (very) poor student, with barely enough money to pay for all the time I spend online, considering the outrageous rate one pays for a local phone call in Scotland... And since my parents own a copy of it, I can listen to it all I want, as long as I'm at home. Someday, though...

Otherwise, thanks all for your help, I see I'm going to have to work on my communication skills, but worry no more... a quick phone call home solved my problems, and I have what I need from my own dear mother... So my dear friends here will now suffer more of my Gordon Bok obsession... well, not obesession... anyhow.

I used to be a great Gordon Bok fan (and also a Maine-iac) when I lived in the US. I got wrapped up with country blues and sort-of forgot about him until last month I was in a folk club meeting in a small town here in New South Wales and there was a guy with a button accordian playing and singing "Isle au Haute Lullaby" which is my all-time favorite of Bok's songs. He turned out to be a Gordon Bok fan and he played me a few others after the meeting which fortunately took place in a pub. The result was a big order to Folk Legacy to catch up with Bok. (Sandy has supplied a blue clicky thing that will lead you to the Folk Legacy website.)

Gordon's headed here in late April. I'm looking forward to it. Say, does the man have any food aversions? I'm the cook for artists on the concert series. Oh, and Kendall, why not come over with him. I could do a BokSprungSchnayerMorse dinner. (add a few more names to that one if you want.
