As I saw the threads about other favorites, I thought I'd gather some info on these 3..I absolutely love their harmony..especially their early days..I believe they sang sea songs & the like under the "Golden Ring Singers"..can anybody tell me about them, (and if I guessed the spelling of their names).. A little history & favorite songs would be nice. Keep on the Sunny Side!..Gary

Gary, for some info and sound clips, check out the Web site for Folk-Legacy Records. I've heard Bok, Muir, & Trickett called "the purist's Peter, Paul and Mary" (although there may be some purists here who may quarrel with their purity....). Gordon Bok has a number of solo albums and at least one recent one with Cindy Kallett. I don't know if Ed Trickett or Ann Mayo Muir have any solo recordings that are still available, but both have recorded solo in the past. I think Trickett's is the most distinguishable voice on the four Golden Ring CD's I've heard.
Bok, Muir, and Trickett still perform together occasionally in New England, but I haven't had the chance to see them since I'm here on the West Coast. I could have seen them one night when I was in Boston, but I figured I'd be in better standing with my sister if I attended my nephew's school play. Darn.
Gordon Bok was in San Francisco last year, and I drove a hundred miles to see him. It was worth the trip.

Ann Mayo Muir now resides in France, Gordon apparently lives in New England (from his accent) and Ed Trickett teaches High School, if I remember correctly (I think possibly in Maryland?).. They get together at some point, or points, each year, sing, tour and record - not sure how much and where at any given time; I saw them a couple of times when I lived in the DC metroplex. I'd drive a good way to see them again; evidently others feel the same. It was srtictly standing-room-only both performances. I have some old LP's from the 60's or very late 50's; and on one of the hootenany-style folk albums are credits and a picture of the young Ann... Showed it to her, can't recall what she said... Interesting to find out some add'l info on these fine performers.

When I saw Gordon Bok last year, he kept forgetting lyrics. I don't think I've ever heard a performer blow more songs. He apologized, and said that he sings bass when he sings with Muir and Trickett, and he's gotten lazy since he can fake it and let them fill in when he forgets lyrics. I'm not very good at remembering lyrics myself, so I often make up lyrics on the fly while I'm singing - with varying amounts of success. Despite his forgetting lyrics, it was a wonderful concert. His memory lapses added a very human touch to his performance.
Bok, Muir, and Trickett don't hesitate to change archaic lyrics to make them understandable to a modern audience. I suppose some people don't like that, but I think they do a good job of it.

Ed Trickett has at least three solo albums on Folk Legacy. They tend to keep most of their "records" in stock. Check them out at site above. The Patons have marvelous taste in who they record - I own at least 80 of their records. Gordon Bok lives in Camden Maine and has a large number of records on Folk Legacy with and without Ed and/or Ann.

Update: Ed Trickett teaches at the University of Maryland. When I first met him in an academic setting, he was a prof in the psychology department at Yale more than two decades ago, making a guest appearance in William Ferris's class in Folklore. He sings on him own from time to time, and I've been lucky to see him perform in the Washington DC area a few times in the past couple of years.

Also in the nature of updates: Ann Mayo Muir's daughter Chirstina Muir lives in Maryland and performs, either solo or with her group *Hot Soup* (with Sue Trainor and Sue Ribaudo).

Charlie: that's really funny about Ed teaching college, not high school; when we were at one of the TBM perormances in Maryland, we heard someone respond to a question from another person in the audience that Ed taught high school and had taught their son - probably did, but at UM.

I've been listening to a Sue Trainor recording on the way to work in the morning lately. At night my wife mentioned how she would like to go back to the DC metroplex to live again; only this time maybe out in the MD country-side? - Sadly our quiet neighborhood's crime rate soared when the legislature's social engineering changed our decades racially mixed (very mixed; a mnini-UN), but middle class, demographics with an injection of assisted housing, which you don't see in their nieghborhoods in Bethesda or Kensington. The issue is behavior, not race. Need a good folksong abt this!

BK...it's happening again....approaching Kensington from the north...and I am right in the way...we shall see. I am singing loudly, but all the folksongs in the world can't cure some problems. In the meantime, Ed Trickett often donates time to our Folk society and continues to find great new songs...

I second the comments re: the excellence of the Folk Legacy collection of recordings, and I highly recommend calling or writing them for their catalogue (PO box 1148, Sharon, CT, 1-800-836-0901). Your only problem may be that you'll want to order everything they have!) They are in the process of reissuing on CD many of their older recordings as well as issuing wonderful new ones, but they also have most tapes and much vinyl still available. As of last fall there were 3 Bok/Muir/Tricket CD's available: All wonderful. 2 are vols. 1&2 of a compilation of selections from their first 15 years. There are also maybe 20 or more tapes of Bok, Muir, and Trikett plus solo albums for each.

Usually, I like ordering music over the Web. It's different with Folk-Legacy. If you call, you'll usually get either Sandy or Caroline Paton, who own the joint and perform on many of the recordings. They're very willing to give you their opinion of any recording you're interested in - and they don't always give favorable reviews, even though the recording might be on their own label. They give discounts if you order 5 or more ($13.98 per CD) or 10 or more ($12.98 per CD). There are four Golden Ring CD's and four Bok-Muir Trickett albums, and then maybe you could round out your ten with Gordon Bok's "North Wind's Clearing" and Archie Fisher's reissue of "The Man With a Rhyme." Look at how much money you'll save by getting ten.

I have to agree with Joe's reasoning. On the two occasions when I've met the Patons, I bought quantity, and it was much cheaper than the other recordings from Folk-Legacy that I was able to find in stores without the discounts or the personal input from Carolyn. I'm thinking that it's getting to be time for another order from them soon (if I only could afford it). The quality of the people on their recordings (as well as the music) is incredible.

Sounds like I'm well on my way to enjoying those guys even more!... thanks for the input.. Now I recall a song I heard from them regarding a mine, I think..I absolutely loved it but it was so long ago, I forgot all but a phrase.." Down in the Dark, Deep Underground" Does that strike a chord? (better yet a complete song) of the one I'm talking about? If so, I'd like the words..if I see them, I'll remember the melody.. And tell me more of the Golden Ring Singers history, if you can. Gary

Is the song "Farewell to the Gold" which is in the DT database. Search for "deep dark underground" and I think its the only hit. (Now I'm trying to remember who else I have heard do this song.)

Thanks Frank, I'll lay it down & sing it at my next Jam.. I've just got to gather some more coin to buy all the music I'd love to purchase.. I've always been saddened that the folk music popularity crested in the 60's, but tickled to death that it never disappeared. Up until relatively recently, did not realize there was still a background, or underground current of people still performing out there. Sure wish there were some local stations or even some AM Clear channel stations that I could pick up some programming in my part of the world! We do have a folk program on the local University station, but the DJ has the idea that all folk has to be Irish.. It's good, but entirely too limited!
