Subject: Bok/Trickett/Muir query
From: Barbara

These folks are coming thru here tomorrow, (Saturday Dec 5) and offering a workshop on harmony. I signed up as soon as I heard, a couple months ago. Now I'm starting to get cold feet. Seems like I recall from years ago that one of this trio has a tongue that takes the finish off your car at 30ft.
Anyone know if it's still true?
Private responses also fine.
Thanks,
Blessings,
Barbara

Don't know about the tongue bit, Barbara - do you mean caustic or obscene, or what? Gordon Bok was very nice when I heard him perform a year ago, but he did seem to be a very sad man. All I know is I'm darn jealous. Tell 'em to come to Northern California, willya? I found out about their New England performance a day too late. Darn.

Profanity has never fazed me, Joe, more on the line of caustic, critical.
I know what you mean about Gordon, tho.
Ask em to put you on the waiting list, for the Blue Hill concert if they do that, or show up and hope. Lot of people have changes of plans in Dec, or catch whats going around, y'know.
Blessings,
Barbara

I agree with you Joe, That group is awesome!... Sure wish to God they'd come to Central Minnnesota!.. I'd give my eye teeth to sing with them... (Or at least a few molars....) I liked them even when they were the "Golden Ring Singers"... do they have a site, too? Like to get some albums form the Big fellow at the North Pole.. Gary

Gordon is much mellower now than in previous years; much happier too. He's a good friend who has been by here to hang out several times lately. And his wife, Carol Rohl (Bok & Rohl ?) sure is a fine harper!

Give him another chance. Please, take my word for it. All of the trio are great artists and grand people. Only be cheatin' yerself if ya don't go and lose yourself in thos harmonies.

One way to get to Ed's is to yell out from the audience, "Sing the song about the guy who sells pornography!!" He'll say, "SAY, WHAT??" Then you tell him, "You know, the one by Dave Golder about the 'porno vender man'" (Poor November man...)

Gordon's CD company is Timberhead Music; you can search for that and I'll bet you'd find a TBM site of sorts. Also, Sandy and Caroline Paton have issued wonderful CDs culled from their FOLK LEGACY LPs. If you buy 'em, they might put together the cash to reissue my two LPS there on CD! (I've still got a box o' vinyl that we use as a doorstop.)

One of my favorites of the Folk Legacy LPs Gordon did (now on CD from Timberhead ) is what was a 2 LP set called ANOTHER LAND MADE OF WATER. It was way underappreciated, but needs SERIOUS listening for the hearer to be pulled into this poetic and appropriately vague word and music picture of life forms here and now semi-lost in the sea mists of antiquity and myth.

Another one that Gordon and his friends in Maine did is on cassette only, I believe. Called "THE PLAY OF THE LADY ODIVERE", it's a marvelous reworking of the seal-into-folks (and back again) legends (Silkies) that's simply transporting!

Sorry if this seems like a blatant plug. I'm just telling you all about some of the less heard creations of this fine chronicler of water legends. Some are actual legends---some are creations out of whole cloth. (Saying that, I'm reminded of the fellow who was asked if he told lies! He answered, "Well, I don't exactly lie; I just remember things that never happened!!")

Try it; you'll like it.

The Golden Ring are/were "a gathering of friends" recording on Folk Legacy with at least 4 records over a long time period, info above. It was usually a large group, not featuring Bok. Trickett was certainly part of it. I don't think Muir was. (I'm too lazy to check - if anyone cares, I will dig out the records and list performers fron the various incarnation of Golden Ring). They were may favorite records for a while and are worth checking out, but not for massive doses of Bok et al - for them Folk Legacy has MANY records of Bok and/or Trickett and/or Muir.

Well, I don't know how any artist could come more highly recommended than by this group. I am going to order some of this post haste, on all of your recommendations. I hope I can get the "silkie" tape that Bro Art mentioned. Just my cup of tea.

All the best,

Mick

Before you post that order, Mick, think about getting the Golden Ring CD's. All four Golden Ring CD's are top-notch music. So are all the Bok and Bok-Muir Trickett CD's. If you order in quantity from Folk-Legacy, they give you a discount. If you call the 800 number owners Sandy or Caroline Paton will probably answer the phone, and they'll be glad to give you recommendations. The Patons performed on at least several of the Golden Ring recordings.

Well, shoot, crew, the workshop was cancelled because only 9 people signed up, and they needed 15. (Bet this is a little hard to believe for you eastcoasters) But a lot of folks out here haven't really heard of the trio. Sue, often, when I hear one of the Golden Ring, or New Golden Ring songs, I'm reminded of the next track - just automatically pops into my head, I listened to them that much.
Blessings,
Barbara

TIMBER HEAD MUSIC (Gordon's label in recent times) is at BOX 840-----Camden, ME 04843 _Another Land Made Of Water_ is on CD now from Timber Head. Ask for their whole catalogue.

The original Golden Ring recording, now is on CD from Folk Legacy. The fine bass on that record was one of the original founders of the Old Town School Of Folk Music---Win Stracke. Gordon Bok was Not on that record---but Ed Trickett was on it. No Annie Muir there either.Others that were prsent were: George and Gerry Armstrong, Howie Mitchell, Herb & Betty Nudelman, Steve White and Ruth Meyer.

The next 2 Golden Ring LPs were called FIVE DAYS SINGING. Joe Hickerson was on those fine records--as was and George & Gerry Armstrong, Ed Trickett I'm pretty sure was there and maybe Gordon on some, but don't hold me to it.

Tha RECENT _Golden Ring Reunion_ recording was Harry Tuft, Cathy Barton & Dave Parra, Ed Trickett, Sandy & Caroline Paton, David Paton and his brother Robin Paton (I think). No Gordon or Anne.

Great, I'm telling "Santa" about those sites... Did the golden ringer's stick mostly to seafaring? Being a sailor at a time in my life helped me appreciate the songs I heard, which tended to be about the sea & that ilk...

Just for the record, all the Golden Ring recordings are now on cd- I'm the happy owner of all! They really formed me as a musician and harmony singer. And Sandy and Caroline Paton are singing on- they just sang at my school in NH a few weeks ago and the kids are still asking when they're coming back!
