I can't believe I hadn't disovered Kate Wolf until this year, but it's true. Now I've ordered her anthology CD and it's become my favorite CD. I am playing the grooves out of it and want to learn every song on it. AND, they're all in my keys!!! Whooo!

I've ordered the Kate Wolf songbook, which ought to arrive tomorrow, and can't wait to see which ones are included there.

I can especially recommend this one to those of you who liked the two "Heart of a Woman" CDs from Ireland (and if you haven't bought those, run, don't walk, to your local CD outlet and snag 'em both, as well as the Mary Black solo CD. Simply yummy stuff by wonderful female vocalists).

WyoWoman- Kate Wolf was one of the greats. In your key, huh? I mentioned in another thread, (Folk Music for Babies), that playing Kate Wolf songs was the ONLY thing that would soothe my fussy premature grandson. And you know what? Her songs seem to be in my key as well. Enjoy! BlueJay

WyoWoman, I've loved her songs since first I heard them. They are not only beautiful and melodic but they seem so personal. You are going to love the Songbooks. Mine are dogeared. There is a great compilation put together by Nina Gerber, out two years ago approximately called Remembering Kate Wolf...well worth acquiring. She was also a very generous person. Utah Phillips told the story of Kate visiting his home and after having a drafty bathroom floor experience, returning home, she sent him two hundred dollars to have the floor fixed. I'm sure you know about her website. www.katewolf.com. You can download a song each month from the site.

Say, do you women think you can get together and sing "Emma Rose" for me? I love women who sing in Kate's key. and "Emma Rose" is my favorite Kate song, with "Redtail Hawk/Pacheco" a close second. Kate's singing makes me think of all the things I like about Northern California.

"Cornflower Blue" for me. Eric Bogle did it in his show as part of a special tribute to Kate.

The sonbooks appear on eBay from time to time and can be had at a reasonable price. That's where I got mine.

I am a fan of Kate Wolf's but only through hearing others do her songs. I have not had the good fortune to actually hear her sing....so ladies, tell me, what key does she sing in? I recommend the compilation album that Eric Bogle is on....my favorite is the one Lucinda Williams sings (I think the title is "Here in California"), although all of the cuts are good....I'm going to have to check out the website and get more informed!

I'm so glad to see by all these comments that Kate Wolf's music is being kept alive by so many. I've made it my special mission for a number of years to introduce her songs at musical gatherings to people who are not yet familiar with her work. In the words of Utah Phillips, Kate was "a healer who, by remembrance, will continue to heal, to care for us". This to me sums up the essence of her music. I remember the reaction of a man at a bluegrass gathering, when I tried to introduce her song "I Never Knew My Father" to the group; the song itself did not go over too well with the chord changes being a little hard to follow. But the man sitting next to me was profoundly impacted by the song. He revealed to me that his father had died before his birth and that he had unsuccessfully tried to write a song about this...he said that Kate had spoken for him better than he had ever been able to. "Songs need new voices to sing them in places they have never been sung in order to stay alive" (Emmylou Harris). So keep on singing Kate's songs, and she will always be with us. Anyone going to the Kate Wolf Festival in Sebastopol, CA. later this month?

I've loved her music for years. When my father died several years ago her "Eyes of a Painter" described him so well I carried that song around in my head for many months.

"Two-Way Waltz","Full Time Woman", and "Across the Great Divide" are other favorites of mine. Her voice had unusual depth and strength.

I'm of two minds on Kate Wolf. I'd say that half of her stuff is self absorbed naval gazery and the other half is near on brilliant. I have the anthology and I do listen to it all when I play it. But I just about have to slkip that Lilac Bush and Appletree thing.

I like a lot of her stuff too, and she sings them beautifully. Give Yourself to Love and Red-tailed Hawk are personal favorites. There is also a video of her doing an AustinCity Limits show, WhoWoman, that I know you would appreciate. She's playing with Nina Gerber and, I think, Bela fleck. Her mellow serenity spreads out from her voice like ripples in a still pond.

Yes, 'Trumpet Vine' is her best song. Agreed, she did so many, many great songs. 'See Here' and 'Slender' from her best album Poet's Heart, 'Calgary', etc. etc.

And don't forget: 'You' from her relatively underrated first album 'Breezes'.

She did some great covers too: Paul Siebel's 'Then Came The Children', Gil Turner's 'Carry It On'. She did a great job adding music to Woody Guthrie's 'One By One'. Far far better than the poor, recent, Billy Bragg & Wilco-version.

"The Lilac and the Apple" is far and away my favorite KW song; I've sung it to my children regularly since they were born. I had the great good fortune to hear the song a lot growing up; Kate was my mother.

Also glad to see appreciation of her versions of "The Sun is Burning" and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes"; the latter was played at Kate's family memorial service, and everyone was profoundly moved.

I recently heard an Irish band from Buffalo NY do "The Sun is Burning" at an Irish festival. I like the song very much, but to do it at an Irish festival seemed odd.

My niece has just chosen "Give Yourself To Love" and "Two Way Waltz" to be sung at her wedding, and I'll be happy to learn them.
Met & performed with Kate Wolf at a Canadian festival mid-'80s, and she consequently and generously had me guest on her Great American Music Hall show in San Francisco... of course I remember her songs and voice, but also her sense of fun (Australians always warm to folk with a sense of humour)

I've probably heard over a hundred of Kate Wolf's songs at one time or another and except for 'The Wind Blows Wild' the lyrics are mostly very straight forward and clear in their meaning. The lyrics of 'The Wind Blows Wild' are filled with images that I don't understand. Do you have any insights about their meaning?

when i hear kate wolf song. i found it so wonderful. i can feel real meaning of hear songs.i am so glad i hear her song. and i call it a soul song.kate wolf is about life,love,deep feelings that you wan't to express by words but you can't find the exact words, but in kate wolf songs you will find it with the melody with her voices that express the soul message of the songs.sometimes i alone hear her songs i could feel soul.
