Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: GUEST,chrismayne@chrismayne.com Date: 03 Oct 03 - 01:00 AM Did you ever find out anything about "The Naff"? I did buy a copy of this in the 80's but it has long since gone missing. I never did know anything about them but I would dearly like to get another copy of this record. After hearing it on the radio, in Hobart, I immediately raced out and bought it. It remains one of my favourite novelty records along with the Idi Amin parodies. I look forward to hearing from you. Chris Mayne. By the way, where are you? (geographically) |

Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: LadyJean Date: 03 Oct 03 - 11:21 PM My grandmother was fluent in French and German. I tried. My French isn't too bad. But I only had two quarters of German in college. German declines. So did I. I was in Gstaad, in the off season! with my mother. We went into a store to buy chocolate. (Toblerones! Switzerland's greatest contribution to civilization!) I stopped to tie my shoe, so mother and I didn't go into the store together. They knew mother spoke English. What else would a woman in a tweed suit and oxfords speak? But they spoke to me in German! I can still speak enough to buy chocolate. Aber das is alles. And I couldn't tell you if they liked mother more, or me. |
Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Oct 03 - 01:41 AM MudGuard, are you telling us that you are but 36 years old. I, too, learned German about 36 years ago - but not so fluently. Still, I'm not bad at it. I can't pass for a native in Germany, but people in other places in Europe have often thought I was German. When I was in Greece this summer, two storekeepers addressed me in German when I walked in the door. Sure beat the hell out of trying to speak Greek - although I did that, too. So, do you think we'll ever get the lyrics to this song? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: MudGuard Date: 04 Oct 03 - 02:58 AM No, Joe, I am not 36, I am 37 and some months. But I think I did not really learn to speak German before I was about a year... ;-) Bill D, as all the words in your post above which are longer than 3 letters are incorrect, you are not yet popular ;-) But you are in good company, most of the so-called German in this thread is not really German ;-) Ok, now it is your turn to complain about my so-called English! |
Subject: RE: Ahah!: so That's why I'm Despised & Rejected!? From: Uncle Jaque Date: 05 Oct 03 - 12:25 AM Mein Leibe Muddcatten: You know, Deutche is one of those languages I've long wanted to learn, but never got around to it. Don't know why I've so admired it - it's just a nifty way to express oneself, it seems. And I'm a big fan of Old-World Deutche engineering and craftsmanship. BMWs; Mausers; Leicas; Zeiss scopes and Bins...can't beat 'em! Thanks to a dear Deutch Cyber-Friend (met right here on the Mudcat, BTW), I have picked up a few things, but wish I could spend some time over there with the folks, as that's about the only way I can pick up a language. She's a Linguist, BTW, and fluent in several languages - which might help, too. OH!; while we're at this; I've been building a traditional rural Yankee outhouse in our back yard (much to the Neighbor's consternation) for the better part of this Summer, to take and erect on our little plot of woods we recently acquired on Berry Pond in Winthrop (a real pretty spot). I've been wondering what the Deuthce phrase for "Outhouse" or "Privvy" might be. Don't know why, really, just that naming it something like "Der Sheissenhaben" might add a certain touch of class - don't you think? Say; how do you make those little "Umlattas" or double-dotty things over certain Deutche vowels? Is there a keyboard trick to it, or do I have to get a special font / program for it? Just in case the word for "Backhouse" requires one, you see. Guten Tag; (How's that!?) Onkel Jaque |

It is nearly 1 year since I asked the same question. Can anyone suggest further lines of enquiry? I have been to music stores and just received blank looks when enquiring about "The Naff". I have searched the net (with my very limited computer skills) and "The Mudcat Cafe" is the only souce so far. If Adrian Carter reads this: Have you had any luck? Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: Ron Davies Date: 11 Sep 04 - 07:55 AM Sounds like a great song--any chance anybody can get the lyrics? Also the Germans get a bad rap in the accusation they have no sense of humor. Schobert und Black, for instance, did a great Walter Mitty-type song called "Freddy the Gun", and somebody, Udo Juergens, I think, did "Der Jazz kommt aus Hamburg", complete with "When the Saints Go Marching In" excerpts auf Deutsch, among other song quotes. Holds its own with Tom Lehrer. If you speak a language, I think, you find out virtually everybody has a sense of humor. |
Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: alanabit Date: 11 Sep 04 - 11:48 AM Quite right Ron. There is a great writer/performer from Vienna called Georg Kreissler. He lived in New York for some time and wrote many wickedly funny songs in both English and German. His song about a psychopath is very reminiscent of the best of Tom Lehrer. |

Subject: RE: If you want people to like you, learn German From: Rasener Date: 12 Sep 04 - 01:17 PM I am sure older dutch people don't like people speaking German. Ask my father in law. Oh you can't sorry, because he is dead now, but when alive he didn't trust any German after what they did to Holland and some of his Jewish friends in the war. He wasn't Jewish. The stories he used to tell me about Holland when it was taken over by the Germans. If my father in law was still alive, he would always send a German in the oppsite direction to where they wanted to go. Fortunately, the younger generation have forgiven and do not look at the Germans in the same way. I speak Dutch, maybe thats why my wife liked me :-) |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,Diana Date: 15 Jul 06 - 12:04 AM Interessting thoughts on here. Kinda confusing though. I think anyone can apreciate a foreign visitor trying to speak their language, nowadays so many germans speak english or french though, as they learn it starting in elementary school. I think the best thing you can do to be liked is not to assume that just because you speak a foreign language no people will understand you. I have met americans and Brits in Germany that talked about the German people around them and then were astonished when I just looked at them and said:"Now that was not very nice!" Then again I met Germans doing the same in America. I am a German, who now lives in the USA. I am teaching both of my kids to speak, read and eventually write German. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Ron Davies Date: 15 Jul 06 - 12:24 PM I'd love to hear this song. It seems pretty clear that the more languages you speak, the better--and it's also a lot of fun. It's also clear, as discussed earlier, that the Germans get a bad rap in the allegation they have no sense of humor. When I was there there were great songs, Ulrich Roski, Schobert and Black, and Udo Juergens, for instance. One of Roski's songs, "Des Pudels Kern" was about a guy who was looking for mushrooms and strayed into a maneuvers area. Picked up for spying, he was grilled for names--so he gave them a lot of names of mushrooms. They were impressed. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn Ger From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 24 Jul 06 - 03:31 AM Uncle Jaque (or Uncle Jack, or Oncle Jacques, or Onkel Jakob?) - For an outhouse we have in German slang Plumpsklo = thudbog. Witty and humourous German singers are Reinhard Mey, Ulrich Roski and Hannes Wader (the famous three of Berlin, in the seventies). And there were Ingo Insterburg and Company, in the same time, famous for their musical jokes and sometimes very unusual instruments. Learn German with the Hymn to Mrs Pohl, his old landlady, about the conflicts after a jag in her house (Hannes Wader also mentioned as a participant). One of my favourite songs - I had some strange landladies, too, at university. |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: alanabit Date: 24 Jul 06 - 06:56 AM On the pop music side, "Die Prinzen" have recorded a lot of witty and funny songs. "Die "Ärtzte", ("The Doctors") are a little too hard edged for everyone's tastes, but they can be devastatingly funny at times too. "Männer Sind Schweine" is a classic. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Slag Date: 24 Jul 06 - 04:39 PM My great grandfather, a German always said that the only time a German was happy was when he had his foot on somebody's throat! Ack! Vee haf vays oof dealing mitt your kind! Papers, you vill show your papers! Joe, I read Hellenic! My pronunciation, I'm sure, leaves a lot to be desired! |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: alanabit Date: 25 Jul 06 - 02:32 AM I think your great grandfather must have been talking about the Germans you see in the Pinewood studio films of the fifties. I recall hearing another silly cliche´ about Germans always being, "either at your feet or at your throat". The bureaucrats do have frightening power over here, but it is rare for them to threaten and bully. Last week, for instance, I got a new tax bill within a week. They had sent me a warning estimate, after my figures had gone in several months late. To be fair to them, they behaved very much better than I did. I would have been a lot less fortunate in the UK! There is plenty to poke fun at here and German culture has as many aberrations as any other. Humor works when you recognise the targets. The silly jokes based on the comic book stereotypes of the fifties and sixties are getting a little tiresome. We are a couple of generations on and no one recognises these cardboard cut outs any more. The "evil Nazi swine" is no more of a typical German than Jack the Ripper is a typical Englishman. |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn Ger From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 25 Jul 06 - 03:54 AM Thanks, alanabit - it is better if such statements are made by observers coming from abroad and not by the people concerned. Yes, we Europeans have learned the bitter lessons of two big wars; stereotypes won't help us any more, but respect for the other ones' rights and ways. The Mudcat, by the way, I experienced as very helpful to know strangers better, and suddenly they are strangers no more, but good friends even if you never have met them. |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Slag Date: 25 Jul 06 - 02:25 PM My great grandfather lived in the mid to late 1800's, not quite the 1950 's or 60's. It was a different world back then. When you consider that the English would always try to position "Germantown" or "Dutchtown" between them and any possible hostilities from the frontier in those day you can understand why there may have been a little bellacosity. Said saying was passed on to me by my mother, now in her 80's! |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 18 Jun 07 - 09:20 PM LOL. I failed it all the way through school. However, whether or not we like it, we have to learn it. If the math to get my age was a bit much, here's the long explanation. "Multiply your age by 4. Add to that 5 x 3" Your age is 11. So 11 x 4 = 44. Add 5 x 3 = 15 to that. 44 + 15 = 59. So, my age is 59. Don't be tellin' that to people. SSSSSSHHHH. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,Joe Offer, at the Women's Center Date: 18 Jun 07 - 09:47 PM I guess one of the Clones moved this thread to the non-music section. I think it started out looking for a song, but the song was never found and the thread drifted. Anyhow, Ebbie said 79 was neunundsiebzig or siebzig neun. Now every part of every German-speaking country has a different way of saying things, but siebzig neun is something I ain't never heard nohow. Is there a native speaker in the house, who can verify whether siebzig neun is ever used? -Joe- |

The thread started out as a song request, and was in the music section until today, when the conversation drifted far, far away from the song request. HOWEVER, should anyone know the lyrics for the requested song, we'd still like to see them posted in this thread. Just put ADD and the song title in the subject box of your message. -Joe Offer, Forum Moderator- |

And you make sure you than Jeri for deleting your e-mail address. She's one of the assistant clones who took care of that for you. She is also a very nice lady. Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Ebbie Date: 19 Jun 07 - 12:54 PM Oh, I wanted to add: Joe, I too have never seen numbers given that way in German. We always used 'und'. But just to cover the bases - since my family spoke a dialect - I looked it up in Babelfish and the alternative is what they gave. |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn Ger From: MudGuard Date: 19 Jun 07 - 03:49 PM Joe, "siebzig neun" is not used in any part of Germany for 79. "neunundsiebzig" is the normal (and only - apart from pronunciation variations) form - I do not like it, but there it is. 179 is (ein)hundertneunundsiebzig - which shows why I do not like it - the spoken "digits" are in a different order than the written digits, as the "siebzig" is at the end while the corresponding 7 is in the middle. (similar to US dates which have the small unit days in the middle, the medium unit month at the beginning and the big unit years at the end) MudGuard, native German speaker |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:13 PM Hey, man, from little acorns big oak trees grow. You know how big the fish was, but that doesn't HAVE to be the size of the fish. I mean to say, when you write the story, the fish could have pulled you into the lake, right? Farley Mowat, a good Canadian author, said that all writers have a bit of the 'liar' in them. And who's the fish gonna tell? It's really between you and the pen. StoSome stories contain enough truth to be real and enough fantasy to be interesting. |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:15 PM What went through your mind when the fish bit? What went through the worms mind when it saw the fish? What was the fish thinking when it took the bait? |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:25 PM Cookie: That may have been what went through the worms mind, but maybe the reader won't want to see the word, ya know? Some folks get real sensitive about that stuff. Especially from an eleven-year-old. Besides, if worms had mouths, his ma or pa might want to wash it out with soap. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:39 PM It could be. OK, little buddy. I have to get. I'm getting tired and have to hie myself on home. Would you please write the story or at least plan how you'd want the story to go? I'd be really interested in reading it. I think you have a great sense of humour, and with a little work on a few expressions with which you may be too familiar, you could become a humourist much like Mark Twain. I should tell you now that I will be away for ten days or so from Thursday until Sunday (about), so I'll be outta touch. If I can get to an internet cafe I'll try to look in a few times. Have you read any Mark Twain? |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:50 PM I think a book would be great, but it's kinda like eating a wahle, ya know? One bite at a time. Try out writing a short story first. I am going to another city to do some work. But I don't want to discuss it on a public forum. I hope you're not offended. As to the story, why not start on it? Some stories I wrote took me a long time--but I'm a slow writer. You may be, also. But you'll never know unless you give it a shot. "I was looking at the dried mud on my sandals and wondering what Honker was doing with the rest of his day . . .". |

Here is a link to one of the great American writers. The book is called "Tom Sawyer". It is a great story. Try reading a bit. I'm pretty sure you could borrow one from your public library.. And remember, "Always acknowledge a fault. This will throw those in authority off their guard and give you an opportunity to commit more." Mark Twain AND "Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest." Mark Twain I have to go, Cookie. I will write again tomorrow, and I will be hoping tonight that you write some of that 'fish' story, because I am really looking forward to reading it. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Peace Date: 19 Jun 07 - 11:13 PM Post it here. There are a few people reading what you write, ya know? One lady just wrote and she hopes you'll actually do something about writing a story. Many great writers started when they were very young. Perfection is not the name of the game. Writing is. Tell your story. You have a neat sense of humour, and certainly you have a way with words. I'm sure a few people will drop in to trade some words with you. But remember, the bad words gotta get left out, OK? |

So I guess I won't make it. Juneau, the capital of Alaska, has no road system out of town. There are mountains and ice fields in back of us and the Pacific Ocean in front. |

In fact I took I-80 to get to Tipton and HHH on the way back. I was running late getting there but had lots of time on the way home. Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Jul 07 - 03:16 PM Panzer, literally translated, means "armor". Tanks were called "panzers" because they are armored vehicles. The whole word for "tank" in German is "panzerkampfwagen", meaning "armored fighting vehicle". Panzer is the colloquial abbreviation of panzerkampfwagen. Panzerfaust means "armor fist". It was a weapon meant to punch holes through the armor of tanks. Panzerschrek means "armor fright". It was a weapon similar to a bazooka, meant to destroy tanks. The Germans supplied their infantry with a very large number of excellent short range tank-killing weapons. They had good reason to. They were outnumbered by the Allies to a factor of at least 20 to 1 in tanks after 1943. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: cookster Date: 07 Jul 07 - 06:48 PM well...... |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Jul 07 - 06:59 PM I'm not sure I remember that, Cookster. The Germans had a multi-rocket-firing thing on wheels called a Nebelwerfer. The G.I.'s may have called those rockets "Screaming Mimi's" but I could be wrong about that...that might be the name for the American rocket devices which were mounted on some vehicles, like tanks or halftracks. The Russians also had rockets...Katyusha rockets, mounted on trucks. The Katyushas are still used today by a variety of Russian-supplied forces. Many of the Muslim fighters in the Middle East have employed them. Seems to me that the generic German words for "rockets" is "raketen" or something like that, but I can't swear to it. As you suggested, "tank terror" is a good enough translation of Panzerschrek, and it has a better ring in English than "armor fright", I'd say. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,Gerhard Date: 10 Oct 10 - 06:32 AM There we are: it's pure irony. However, quite a number of American and British writers boasted their effort to learn German, so they clearly hoped to be liked for that by their fellow-citizens. Mark Twain, to name one, was quite critical of German society, but simultaneously very eager to learn about it. His critique on href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Awful_German_Language">The Awful German Language is a rejected lover's lament. Mark Twain is certainly well-liked by Americans, Germans, and elsewhere, though not all he wrote is marked by his best wisdom. |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,Gerhard Date: 10 Oct 10 - 06:35 AM contd. Generally, ambitious learning adds to someone's reputation, unless it's combined with a snobbish or geekish attitude. Learning difficult languages (i.e. any foreign languages) for cultural reasons is a worthy cause, like learning to play instruments etc. Gerhard (a German trying to learn a number of languages - and feeling to be liked for that.) PS: Here is the clicky for The Awful German Language. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: Arnie Date: 11 Oct 10 - 12:45 PM This thread started over 13 yrs ago - is it the oldest current thread? I haven't read it all, but was the original query ever answered? I speak a bit of German and found that the only people this made me popular with were Germans who appreciated the effort I made. Unfortunately it probably sounded like an effort too!! Case endings, split infinitives - learning this language is not for the faint-hearted! |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,Gerhard Date: 11 Oct 10 - 06:02 PM Arnie, the best witness hitherto seems to be that anonymous GUEST on 09 Oct 10 - 11:06 AM. However, that version might be a parody of an affirmative original. You'll have a ball when you're spreken der Deutsch - not while learning, to be sure. If the last three words of this line are original, they are deliberately wrong German, somewhat self-contradictory. (A well-known variant is "I wish I could sprechen Sie deutsch".) I googled quite a bit and found no further evidence of the song; the question is still open. Actually, learning any foreign language is very difficult. To aid your memory, learn songs (or arias) by heart, and read books you really like. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,dj ian maiden Date: 15 May 11 - 12:11 AM It is definitely 100% positively THE NAFF. The title is actually SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH. It was an Australian novelty sone released on EMI in 1981, it is not a regular looking EMI label though and may have been an EMI custom pressing, as they were pressing most independent releleases at that time. Written by a J.Gillard (although I suspect not the Julia Gillard who is currently Prime Minister). I first heard it in Adelaide on the 5UV Student Radio 12 in 1981 and took me about 15 years to find a copy. I am currently not set up for digitizing vinyl, but when I am, I will post it on this forum so you can all experience the glory of The Nazz. My favourite line is "If you want people to say Howdy Doody, Change your name to Dieter or Rudy" |
Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,Judith Gabriel, Mittagong Date: 12 Sep 11 - 07:27 PM Adrian Carter, you first asked the question in August 1997, and today you get an answer. Clive Robertson did indeed play SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH by THE NAFF on his ABC radio programme. After playing the record (yes, I still have the single), to the best of my reckoning these are the lyrics: If you want people to like you, learn German If you want love and affection, whisper "ja, ja" If you want people to say "howdy doody" Change your name to Dieter or Rudi Give them something to think about Stand up straight, talk in kraut "Danke schon, bitte schon, ja, ja, ja" If you want people to like you, learn German You'll make so many friends when you SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH 'cause smiles break out at the sound of kraut When a german voice is heard (achtung) 'cause today it's a frankfurter sausage, tomorrow the world Oh, if you want people to like you, learn German Wear a monocle and a jewelled(?)spur(?) (all the way from Heidelberg) And if you want that popularity Try to speak your Deutsch with clarity Swig that beer, drink that wine Make the trains all run on time (toot, toot) If you want people to like you, learn German You'll make so many friends when you SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH So act real merry, sing in Gerry And chat up all the girls (hello Schatze) Because today it's a frankfurter sausage, tomorrow the world (music) Then you'll come back from Paraguay (but next time no more Mr. Nice Guy) Drive around in a big Mercedes Enjoy interrogating terrified ladies (You vill answer ze qvestion) If you want people to like you, learn German (whoa) You'll make so many friends when you SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH So have some fun, talk in Hun When the German flags unfurl (ticketty poo) 'cause today it's a frankfurter sausage, tomorrow the world. Oh, if you want people to like you, learn German Girls will let you kiss them upon the neck (you're djoking) Germany will become a power again If you annex Czechoslavakia Fly Stuka (?), drive tank Put your Deutschmarks in the bank If you want people's love and admiration Then try to assimilate them two-ton traits (that's what the people like) So shine your boots up, brush up your goose-step Get them Panzers oiled Because today it's a frankfurter sausage, tomorrow (x3) There's so much love you really can't knock it For the guys who invented the B2 rocket Today it's a frankfurter sausage, tomorrow (x3) If you're going to London today Fly Lufthansa (ve know ze vay) Today it's a frankfurter sausage, tomorrow the world (vody-o-doe) That should satisfy those who couldn't quite remember the song. It was a good one. |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST,JSL Date: 28 Dec 11 - 11:39 PM Hello Shatzi I was looking for the MP3 of this and came up with this site. Along with 'Christmas Countdown' John Bird's 'Dah selekerted Works Of Idi Amin' Jeremy Taylor and of course Brunswick Heads Revisited, this is an all time favourite. I have the single (or my parents do) but too lazy to get a digital recording happening. I will at some stage - too good not to preserve. Given the euro and some favourable political winds, who knows? Manybe it will become topical again:) Couple of lines not quite right above. 'Fly a Stuka, drive a tank - Put your deutschmarks in the bank' 'for the guys that invented the V2 rocket' (history people, history!) The line 'all ze vay from Heidelberg' keeps playing in my mind, but I can't remember the earlier line.. It will come to me and it was clever:) two-on traits is clearly meant to be 'teuton traits' as in tuetonic traits - wandering over europe in springtime, that sort of thing:) Thanks for the info... |

Subject: RE: Req: If You Want People to Like You, Learn German From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 13 - 04:19 PM I randomly heard this on the radio twice, many years ago; probably in 1988. This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone else knowing about it. The chorus goes "If you want people to like you learn German. Your friends will all like you when you sprechen sie deutsche. You will win such popularity, when you speak your Deutsche with clarity; today it's Franfurt sausage, tomorrow the world" There were funny references to 'the guys who invented the V2 rocket and answer ze questions. It is hilarious. I even publicly recounted this radio experience at a business breakfast, where the head of Newcastle ABC radio was speaking. After I had everyone in the room wondering where this was going, I asked 'Could play it again?' This brought the house down. I now have my record player working again and have a great collection. But that is the Lynch pin I could do with to make it complete. So if anyone, anywhere knows details, I'd be delighted. I'll go over this enormous thread when I'm not rushing out for work and see what I can extract. |
