Orillia, Ontario, Canada, a little over an hours drive north of Toronto, home of Rombos famous restaurant which was discussed in the first silly Don't Post to This Thread, and Finnegan's where Rick has been playing on Wednesday nights for a few weeks. Rick can be quite entertaining when he's in the mood, like the night he did Bob Dylan cutups to get at Little Hawk. Usually he's in one mood or another.

When I met Rick Kane at the Mariposa Folk Festival, Rick had been enjoying the free beer for entertainers just before he ran into a distraught father who had lost his son in the crowd. Rick told the father that parenting was like deer hunting. If you stand in one spot they come back around. It worked. The father stayed in one spot and his son showed up. Rick told me later that there were differences between parenting and deer hunting. You weren't allowed to pull a bead with a rifle on a kid.

One Finnegan's customer had fuzzy orange pants on tonight. Rick complimented him on his pants at the end of the evening. Wouldn't want to mistake a patron for a deer.

My biggest concern with Rick Kane is that he stops singing when he hears the pool balls rattle. It's one of his favourite sounds. Tonight he went mute in the middle of Jesse with the Long Hair Hanging Down, right at the sensitive part of the song, where Jesse was about to shoot the banker in the eye.

Little Hawk played a few numbers between Rick Kane's sets tonight. While Little Hawk was playing a fierce wind and rain attacked the patio tables and umbrellas blowing them against the wall and the windows that face south towards Kitchener Park. Rick, followed by a waiter and a waitress, ran out and grabbed umbrellas. Rick popped back in with just enough time to say, 'Oops, I was saving the world,' before playing a harmonica bridge on Little Hawk's song.

Later, one of the customers requested Paul Simon's song the boxer. Rick didn't know it so Little Hawk played it. Little Hawk played his own harmonica this time. Well he should play his own harmonicas. Little Hawk wears about 26 harmonicas most of the time. I don't know about when he's sleeping. I've never seen him in his pajamas and I didn't see his knees when he was in Murray's hottub. I swear.

Yeah, that was annoying. Jesse with the Long Hair is one of my favorite songs! And Rick does it well.

Aside from the breaks whenever he hears that rattle, it's great to hear.

Other songs of the evening that I loved were Meadow-muffin Blues, Big-Assed Molly, and the one that goes "Dreamin' just comes nat'ral" whatever it's called. Oh, and "It's so hard not to fall in love with ewe" is a beautiful song. Arrgh, it's "you", not "ewe"!!! (In-joke for the Orillia crowd.)

Little Hawk did a couple of pieces while Rick was on his break, and the Hawkster is actually not too bad. (*eg*)

We're going to have to get ol' flatso to play one of these days. (Nights, whatever.) Can I request Sloop John B? (I know it's overdone by some people, but I still like it.)

Anyway, if you're in Orillia on a wednesday evening, come on over to Finnegan's. It's great! (And the food is good, too.)

"Meadow Muffin Blues"--that's one I'd hoped never to hear again, by Delmer and Cecil (a couple of pseudo-Ottawa Valley cutups who were a comedy act created for CHEZ 106, the rock radio station.) Cecil was/is actually local bluegrass guy Mike O'Reilly. On the strength of their meadow muffin hit and general bad taste, Delmer and Cecil got the first fling at the cow-chip throwing contest at the Perth Fair, and several others I suspect, for several years.

Hey they're playing Fielding on the CBC radio!

Actually, the McGill is behind Rombo's, not Finnegan's. Rombo's is too cheap to actually install normal washrooms...Ha! Ha! I'm joking, okay? Rombo's does have normal washrooms...well, fairly normal...they finally succeeded in getting that big rat to move out of the men's room by promising him a year's subscription to Playrodent if he would. (*eg*)

flattop - I DID play my own harmonica the last time. I just borrowed Rick's harmonica HOLDER, but I played MY harmonica. You've gotta like someone a whole lot before you go playing their harmonicas. Not that I don't like Rick but...well, I'd rather play my own harmonicas, not his.

Do I always weare the harmonica pouch? Well, I used to wear a leather hippy hat, and was accused of never taking it off too, but there were those who know better. I do not wear my harmonica pouch in the shower, in the bathtub, or in bed. Am I revealing too much?

By the way, I think if we keep mentioning Finnegan's (on West Street in Orillia, Ontario) and Rombo's (on Laclie Street in Orillia, Ontario), I think we can soon present them each with a hefty bill for advertising. There's an idea, eh? flattop, Hesperis and I can split the money 3 ways...maybe some for Sophocleese too...then we can afford to buy that Linda Manzer guitar, plus maybe a Papal indulgence or two, to cover flattop's sins and guarantee him entrance into the paradise of his choosing.

moonjen - I have got about 15 or 20 empty harmonica cases for Hohner Big River harmonicas. Do you need a couple? I would be happy to mail them to you, free of charge. I believe they will hold a kazoo just fine. You're right...I am looking for a rosewood kazoo.

I found several copies of the lyrics on the web that might help you study for the quiz next week. However, these cowboys don't spell very well and although they may be quick to shoot a possum, they aren't very comfortable around semi-colons. I ran them through a spell-checker.

Glad that to be of assistance, hessy. I was more interested in the words. Do they seem strange to you? Doesn't the Sheriff's love for Jesse seem stronger than Jesse's love for Luann? Shooting the banker while the banker had a gun to Luann head? Dangerous move! You would think that the banker would have pulled the trigger when he was shot. Do you think that was what the Sheriff intended? Saying to Jesse, well I tried to save her but things went badly? Perhaps the Sheriff waited until the banker moved the gun away to brush a deer fly off his nose or something. They don't say. And what's this about getting married after the mortgage was forclosed and the banker shot. Do you think that they might have lied about their marital status on their mortgage application? I can understand cowboys killing each other with six shooters but lying on a mortgage application is unforgivable. Perhaps the banker was hiding his own hard earned money before heading out of this god-forsaken town where the Sheriff is as likely to shoot you as an outlaw. Who knows?

I thought that I did four songs but I guess that I mutilated one so badly that you didn't even recognize it as a song. Well, at least no drunken patron got up and played Jerry Lee Lewis on the jukebox while I was playing like he did when Little Hawk started to play.

Oh, and to nip it in the bud after only one person contacted me personally, there is no Orillia clique. No you can't join. We are just a bunch of people who barely get along with each other. A few weeks ago we hardly spoke to each other. If you have to commute, especially if you have to go past border guards, how could you possibly be part of our exclusive little Orillian non-clique. And if there was one, you know that there isn't one, it would not rhyme with prick as the Americans say the word clique. It would rhyme with mystique because it would have a drunken Canadian feel to it. Not that I'm suggesting anything, cause there isn't one, of course. I know we all live in or around Orillia and we share a common interest in music. If the Yanks want to look for cliques around here, they should get involved in Orillia City Council politics and civic affairs in this town. Hoo boy! Talk about cliques! Deadly. Rick played very well last night.

And yes, you did play 4 songs, flattop, and pretty well at that. I played 3, as I recall.

Comments on Jesse: It's a superbly written song, which doesn't tell you everything, and that is one of its strengths. I doubt that this song ever would have been written if not for the influence of Mr. Bob (Dylan) on its author. It's extremely Dylanesque.

Sheriff Paul had strong reasons to shoot the banker. The lives of both Jesse and Luann were hanging in the balance. The banker was a ruthless scumbag, that's pretty evident. He had designs on both Luann and on Jesse's worldly assets. He was practicing fraud and who knows what else. He had no respect for anyone in that town, which helps explain why the sheriff didn't like him one bit. The sheriff owed Jesse one for saving his life once before the war, and there was the honour of comrades who have shared common danger to think about. Jesse couldn't draw and shoot, because the banker was watching him all the while, and would probably have used Luann as a screen and shot Jesse, and probably Luann as well. The banker's gun need not have been aiming directly at Luann's head, but may simply have been beside her head, at the ready...more likely he had his mind on shooting Jesse, and was simply threatening Luann to keep Jesse helpless. Jesse stood his ground, but didn't draw his gun. Sheriff Paul acted immediately, to save the lives of 2 people whom he loved. Sheriff Paul is the unsung hero of that song...the implication is that he loved Luann too, but he was willing to let her go with the man she loved. That's a true hero.

But most of all, it's just a very good song, and that's the real justification for the whole thing.

If anyone wants to join our non-clique...hey, we're friendly here in Canada, so c'mon up. You might even get to eat at Rombo's, Finnegan's, Brewery Bay, or best of all...Mezzaluna. Bon appetit!

Good on you for your interpretation of "Jesse with the Long Hair", Hawkster - I think flattop was just being strange again.
Although the Sheriff didn't have to love Luann too, he could have saved her out of duty and out of love for Jesse. I think Jesse knew the Sheriff was there.

The one thing that puzzles me with this song is, how did all those people show up at the Banker's place right at that moment?

You know, the writer probably left out the verses about how Sheriff Paul and Jesse have a big fist-fight, and how Jesse was sitting in jail telling Paul all about the Banker's plans to split town, and setting it up that both men go there and trick the banker into confessing about the loan scam, (the scum,) and about how they saw Luann walking in the direction of the Banker's place, and guessed that something was up, and followed her.

That would sort-of fill in the empty spaces in the plot...

Anyway, Little Hawk played his 3 numbers well. It was a really good night all round.

I don't know, though, I could be a tough study, so patience will be a virtue. Or is it, virtue will be a patient.

Is Rick Kane playing the Newmarket Coffeehouse this Friday, Nov.5th? Bob Froese (sp?) sent me an e-mail saying that he'd book Rick while I was driving to Nova Scotia in August. I forgot to reply and haven't heard since.

I pulled Rick's tape out and played it yesterday while driving to Moncton and back. What a strange beautiful day. Cape Breton was acting bipolar, it wasn't just me - bright happy sunshine on red and yellow mountains one minute, dark rainy sulking storms the next. We drove through several snow squalls on the way back. Kelly's mountain looked Christmasy around 3am. Unfortunately we had to wait for a half hour while construction workers moved a concrete slab in place on the Seal Island Bridge. Waiting for contruction spoils the mood at 3 in the morning.

flattop - Referring to Kelly's Mountain as "a concrete slab" strikes me as a little disrespectful when speaking of a beloved regional landmark. The good citizens of Cape Breton are likely to drum you out of town if you keep on this way...

Regarding Rick Kane, yes, he is appearing at the Corner Coffeehouse in Newmarket, Ontario either this Friday or this Saturday, but I can't remember which at the moment. His tape is a good one, and I recommend it to all...it's called "On The Lam".
