Hi! Does anyone know of a group or single performer who concentrates on bagpipe music alone? If you can recommend anyone, please! help me out here!

the two best piping Cd's available (IMHO) are Hamish Moore's Dancing on the Bridge (Greentrax 073) and Paul MacNeil and Jamie MacInnis's Fosgail An Dorus (open the Door) which is available everywhere except Canada on the Lismor label. It might even be available in Canada on Lismor but likelly not as Jamie and Paul released it independantly there. I have listened to almost every piping cd that has been released in the last 5-10 yrs and these two are the best. They aren't solo piping in the Scottish style (i.e. more classical/regimented)but more of an old style when the pipes wer played for solo stepdancing.

Hamish Moore, who I mentioned here before. He is a Scot.

I have his CD "Stepping On The Bridge" (Danna' Air An Drochaid) Greentrax CDTRAX 073.

In that particular one he went to Cape Breton Island to learn the Cape Breton style which is designed more for dancing than marching. Liner notes explain technical differences and history, etc, for all you pipers. On it he plays the highland pipes, the border pipes, and the Scottish small pipes. (The fiddler on some of the dance pieces, incidently, is Jerry Holland, a Cape Breton fiddler of renown with his own CD's out.) The focus of the CD though is the pipes, not the fiddle and piano.

I expect that he has other CD's out.

He even makes his own pipes!

The first thing that springs to mind is 'Define Bagpipe Music' !!

Do you mean Scottish ? Or Nothumbrian ? or Irish ? or Breton ? Or even Greek if you like !! There are so many different bagpipes and styles of play .

If you can find it there is a tape called ' Great Masters of the Piobaireachd ' it's the four winners from the Clan Donald Piping competition on Skye 1977

Barry is a leading expert on the history of traditional Highland Gaelic / Cape Breton piping.
