ALBA GU BRATH!Well put together wee article that ljc.The civil restrictions being put in place over in Scotland now are frightening with curfews for kids under 16 and other such like, devolution could turn out to be the death knell for independence if we're not careful. The Scots labour politicians have to be forced to make their minds up a dog can't have two masters and Labour's agenda is highly suspect.Scots can never have the political system they want except in a fully independent Scotland but a real problem is that huge numbers of our population(particularly younger people) are disenfranchised, depoliticised and apathetic due to a perceived futility to affect change no doubt because of the Thatcher(spit, grot, grog)years.

I've known for a while (as I'm sure everyone else has) about the Irish seperatist movement. However I never knew that there was a Scottish seperatist movement. I always admired the Irish for fighting for what they believe in although I do not support their violent methods and it always bugged me that the Scottish didn't take some sort of a stand. It's nice to know that they are. We just don't hear anything about it here in the States. I'm mostly Scottish and the thought of my homeland under English rule usually depresses me (I got a song out of it so I guess it's not completely worthless). The thought of a free Scotland is overwelling. The Irish may complain about how their four counties are still under English rule but our whole country is still occupied territory! Maybe, someday the seperatist dream may come true and I pray that it will be bloodless and complete.

Hey, haven't you heard, the English are ruled by Scots! Our PM and Chancellor are both from north of the border. And now, MPs from Scotland can vote in Westminster, but English MPs don't get to vote in the Scottish Assembly. It's not independence, but its a darn sight better than it was.

Most free thinking English would be happy for Scotland to control its own destiny.

Most of the freethinking Scots that I have met over the years are not rushing to promote home rule.

I come from Northumbria and want to be ruled by neither of you. (BG) Cheers GBroon

I shouldn't think the days of the average scot are spent any different from the days of the average englishman/frenchman or italian so frankly Celtic Bard I shouldn't get too depressed about it.

Celtic Bard, how mostly Scottish are you, when did you leave Scotland, think because a lot of us in England have Scottish blood in our veins.

Cobble.

Most of the people I know in England are pretty browned off with the government too. We don't really want to be ruled by "the English" as you put it either. Personally I'm not at war with anyone, Irish, Scots, Welsh, whatever. However I'd have a few choice remarks for Tony Blair, William Hague et al. As for Margaret bloody Thatcher...

The main problem isn't to do with the nationality of the civil servants who are "in charge", but more that modern politics is too obsessed by capital gain, with too little being put back into society at large. Effectively, we all work for Britain PLC, and there is a conflict between the interests of the workers and those of the directors.

Anyway, enough of this Bolshevik dialectic.

hooray for the common man.

I spent a couple weeks in Scotland this last September and the talk of "Home Rule" was very much alive.

The conversations really revolve around this issue of "Freedom vs. Security"(see thread of same name).

The answer for Scotland, as for all of us, is to have the courage to choose freedom.
