Subject: Tracking Sam Pirt
From: Sam Pirt
Date: 30 May 01 - 06:36 PM

Hi, Gill Pirt here.

Just getting the hang of this Mudcat idea - keeping track of the lad and perhaps making some new friends at the same time? My first task is to find out his itinerary - somehow I've not got that from Sam himself (been a bit too busy!) so he tells me it is in Mudcat somewhere. Would love to hear from anyone who happens to meet up with him.

Thanks for your help - I'm getting to like this Mudcat thing more and more!

Good wishes to all - Gill

Mudcat is a great place to be and all the mudcatters I have met have been part of a real global folk community . Glad that you have joined us Gill ... if only to keep tabs on young Sam *grin*

We'll track him down, and keep track of for you, Gill. Beware Mudcat, tho, it is addictive! You do understand that he couldn't have a better "Minder" than Bill, don't you? LOL!

Hey Gill,

Sam n Ian's local roadie here!! It's Emma. Yep, I'm JeZeBeL. The one with the bad reputation, only cos I know Bill though. Are u sure u want to let him go to America with Bill, it is a bit risky.

Ian's just been to the jug and he's most amused that he's the only one of them 3 to have been able to drag himself down to the jug the night before America. The thread u want is Sables Pirt and Stephenson tour. That has all their tour dates on.

Hope to see you at the Jug soon. Pick up that penny whistle again. It's easy!!

It's not on the official schedule, but they're going to be at our session in Portsmouth NH on Fri, 1 Jun. The regulars know they're coming and are really looking forward to meeting them. Hope they packed enough CDs!

Welcome to the 'Cat Gill. You have the thread with their basic itinerary on it and we can keep this one going to track the lad as he tours the colonies.

On the 6th of June with any luck, they will be here in Columbus, Ohio and we will have a good ol' Midwestern cookout with Ribs, Bratwurst, Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Slaw, Cake, and Watermelon..........plus some good music too. Big Mick will also be here and we're looking forward to a good time. We'll send them on their way on the 7th, possibly a bit more gaseous than when they arrived.

I think we need one of 'Spaw's inventions: an electronic tag linked to a global positioning system so we can track their journey from 'catter to 'catter.

Well, I am sitting here in their first stop in the states. They will be at my house in Bath, Maine, until Sunday morning when they head for New Hampshire.

If you PM me, Gill and Geraldine, I will give you my phone number so you can call if you need to.

Friday night we will be at the Press Room in Portsmouth and Saturday night we will be at the Unitarian Church in Brunswick. Apparently we will be there all by ourselves because I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RESERVATIONS FROM ANY MUDCATTERS YET!!!!

Anyway, they will have full access to the computer here so they can keep everyone updated.

Gonna be fun!

Naemanson, yes you have too received a reservation from a Mudcatter -- me! (Or were you too asleep Sunday night when Kendall and Curmudgeon were trading verses and versions of "Three Old Whores" and Monday morning despite coffee? You didn't seem to fall asleep in your breakfast!) Of course, I didn't do anything like actually give you cash or anything...

So, do I have to go through channels or what (mumble, mumble, government bureaucrat, mumble)? See you at The Press Room tomorrow!

I could have driven to the airport today because I can't get to work. Of course, I can't go to Manchester either because my car is screwed. Oh well. I'll wave at the sky - at around 2:30PM??

To be completely truthful I have reservations from Bat Goddess and Kendall. I threw Jeri on to the list because she wasn't certain if she was coming or not. But that is a mighty skimpy list.

I was only trying to make a point that I have reservations about my reservations.

Now let's see it's 3pm, so they would have had the free drink and packet of peanuts that you can't get in to, and have probably been given the menu card which sounds delicious because you don't at this stage realise that the food is 2 inches square . The flight attendants will be wheeling that duty free (do they still have it on transatlantic flights?) trolley down the isle and Bill is wondering whether to buy that bottle of Hi Karate aftershave. Sam will be twiddling with the music channels wondering why there is no accordion music and offering to do a deal on one of the Sables Pirt Stephenson CD's!. God's speed and happy landings.

A few more hours and they'll be there. How long is the flight to philli? I know it's 9 to florida(but it feels like 5000 if ur clostrophobic and suffer from vertigo like me). It's going to be so quiet without sam's accordion, ahhhhhh bliss.....can I bring mine down instead then? I only know 2 tunes!!

They may be nearly asleep by now, though the excitement will keep them awake. Bill is probably counting how many cigs he's bought, how many he's got left and how many more he needs to buy, and asking for a proper cup of tea. Ian and Sam are probably jamming on some home made instruments. So good luck, bon voyage and have a great trip.

From Gill, Sam's mum

11.30pm 31st May 2001

Hello all, I'm getting the hang of all of this quite nicely I think. And I've put it off for all these months . . . better late than never.

Thank you all for your welcome and your good wishes, and your obvious warmth and interest in our Sam. I can imagine his smily face smiling even more by now! It's great to see the tracking started so soon - before the plane had even taken off eh? Who has spies in important places?

Hello to new and old friends - I do recognise some names from the Jug weekend - hello JeZebel and Noreen, and even Jellybeam (great that you are even newer than me to the Catters).

Being so new - I need some help - what is PM? (I do hope it is not something really rude!). How do I do it or where can I buy one?

Goodnight all - it's midnight and I was up at 5am to take Sam to Bill's. Speak to you later - now said with confidence!

Gill Pirt

Gill, a PM is a Personal Message. It is a private messaging system within the 'Cat. Look at the top of this page. You will see a box labled "Quuick Links". Click on the down arrow and a menu of options will appear. One of them is "Send A Personal Message". Click on it and then click on the word "GO". The rest is pretty self explanatory.

The boys must be in the car and on their way from the airport. They'll be here soon.

You know, I've always thought the first stop on a trip sets the tone, or maybe the standard, by which the trip should be measured. That being the case I have a certain responsibility to them and their future hosts. Maybe I should set a low standard to make it easier on the other hosts. If the food is bad, the sleeping arrangements uncomfortable and things overall bad then the other hosts will have an easier time making them comfortable. Plus the boys will have some good stories to tell back home. "Ugh," I can hear them saying, "You should have seen what that guy in Maine made for us to eat!" There is a dramtic shudder before the speaker continues, "And the bed seemed to have nails in it!"

Hmmm, this will take some thought....

Naemanson, I think Spaw said he was going to feed them beans and sausages. That takes care of both the food AND the sleeping conditions, if not arrangements.

I'f I'm concious after tomorrow night's session, I'll post something. Wish I had a digital camera!

Sam will probably be asleep too. He always does in cars. WHat time is it at yours? it's 4:10 am here. I really aren't tired it's wierd.

I thought Bill would be awake, completely excited by this tour. Perhaps he's over excited himself. Ian's normally awake...unless it's his shift for half an hour. Sam's usually fast asleep as soon as he hits the seat!!

Nothing new there then.

Hope the flight was nice anyway....

JeZeBel, the boyz are in Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EDST) zone - the same as Mudcat, and the same that shows up on the posts here. The only place that will be different will be Michigan (and Spawville in Ohio). That's and hour earlier than what shows up on Mudcat, so 9:00 AM here will be 8:00 AM where they'll be.

We'll probably play Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine tonight. I also will try to provoke Bill into singing Whitby Fisherman.

The boys are up and out already! I just called home and got no answer.

I came down the stairs this morning at 6:00 AM to see Ian's bright eyes and quick smile from his sleeping bag. I guess jet lag and excitement (and youth) are too much to allow him to sleep. They were all up before I left for work. I left them with directions for a killer American breakfast place.

Hi ALL!!

At the moment were in 'Radio Shack' in Bath Maine. We have just had a fantastic breakfast of Pankakes with blue Berrys and strawberries and mapel syrup, MMMMMM!!! We also managed to meet an anglo concertina player, and we have arranged to sing for our lunch.

Mum or Gill, I am pleased that you seem to be getting to grips with it well, and as you can see I you won't loose track of me!!! I also managed to get stopped at customes, I admitted I was carrying shortbread, still they saw I was an accordionist and soon let me go. Love Sam

HI GUYS!! Ian here ->once again yesterday I proved that I have more energy than the other two! ->not only was I the only one in the jug wednesday, but the only one not to fall asleep at the service station after 22hours of awake-ness straight!!
Some stupid person decided to let me do the navigating too!
I'm going to buy some clothes now! See ya,
ian

I was knackered last night and sleeping while driving almost but the other two kept me awake very well and we got here OK. The car rental tried to give us a Ford Mustang but Sam's accordion would not go into the boot (trunk) so we had to get a Toyota Camry. I got through customs and immigration without any trouble dispite the Yorkshire Tea and CD's
see you all soon.
Cheers Bill

Bill Sam & Ian

Sounds like it IS jet lag. 6 AM = 11 AM UK time. It's not so bad getting up too early. Going the other way is a lot worse. (When I went from the US to Korea, my "internal clock" woke me up at 2:30 in the morning for the first 3 days or so. Yick.)

I plan to show up at the Press Room early, but have to make a bunch of stops first. I hope you can get out of work early - there's going to be a brawl for seats tonight! (We will make sure all guests from other countries (UK and NY) have good seats.

How about a guest from Maine? No? Even if I arrive with the guests of honor?

I plan on leaving this area around 2:00. I am planning on running into some traffic but should be there in plenty of time to get good seats and maybe even a decent parking spot.

Good parking can be found from about 3:45 to 4:14. After that, you have to stalk people for spots. There's a 2 hour limit on parking until 6 PM, but I don't know if anyone's gotten a ticket for staying longer.

Naemanson, I don't consider you a guest anymore. A semi-irregular maybe.

We've had up to 13 fiddles at the session. Wonder if all three of the guys brought their boxes - we could go over the legal limit for squeezy things. Not that I'd complain, mind you...

OK, I guess I'll settle for being a semi-irregular.

The boys have gone down to the Starlight Cafe to play for their lunch. I came home at 11:30 to find them practicing in my living room.

WARNING! I introduced Ian to my 6 string banjo and he wants one! He got a big kick out of being able to play the banjo without additional training time.

We will be headed for Portsmouth around 2:00. Gonna be a great evening!

Report from the Portsmouth session:

In attendance, beside the regulars, were Bill, Sam and Ian (duh), Dan Milner (Liam's Brother), Barry Finn (who looks and sounds absolutely great, and is allowed light hugging), and Lars (did I get the name right), a shanty singer from the Netherlands. The shy, reserved John Nolan was also seen.

About Sam's accordion playing - I watched him some of the time. Sam's right hand is like, well, imagine a very large spider on a very hot griddle. In any case, the lot of them were astounding. They should find the roof of the place by next week.

I was sitting right in between Sam and Ian for most of the night. I got stereo squeezies. I may not be able to hear anything now, but I sure had a great time! (They shoulda brough more CDs. They're gonna run out.)

On Sam, all the praise you've heard about his playing has been completely deserved. Ian, too. Bill is still as talented and sweet as ever. If anybody has the chance to hear these guys, DON'T MISS IT!!! At some point, music quits being just music and turns into pure energy and the communication of souls. These guys play like that.

Why does really great music always seem to involve sleep deprivation?!?

I couldn't post last night after The Press Room session (and the Dutch shanty singer's name is Hans -- I snagged his only 3 CDs) cuz I had to sleep fast (It was 11 pm when I got home) to get up at 5 a.m. to be on the road by 6 a.m. (right now practicallly) to head down east to a Maine Old Cemeteries Association meeting in Belfast, ME. After the meeting, I'll head down Rte. 1 to Brunswick and tonight's concert.

I'm having way too much fun! Last night was pretty incredible. Oh, and the ship "Pride of Baltimore" also pulled into port yesterday, so several regulars at the session were there playing for the tall sail enthusiasts. Why does everything all happen at the same time?!?

Gotta run out the door this very minute or I'll be late!

See everybody later this afternoon/evening!

We have two threads following their exploits, this one and the other one. I guess this one gets the nomination to take on the load.

Last night, as you can see above, we went to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to a session at the Press Room. We arrived settled and began to participate in no great fanfare. All was normal and fun. About half way through the evening the boys began to let their hair down. At no point can you say they "took over" the session but the focus turned to what they could do.

And people loved them.

When we unloaded the car they had left their stash of CD's in there. I snagged them and brought them along. I don't know how many were in the bag but by the end of the night I threw the bag away. It was empty. And their pockets were bulging with money! They need more CD's!

Right now they are down there sleeping like the dead. I think the trip has finally caught up with them. Once they get up I will get them on line.

No, they didn't "take over" the session, but folks definitely wanted to hear them. Bill quietly urged me to "ask Sam to play the Spanish tune." I did, but I could tell Sam felt uncomfortable playing something that no one could join him on. He did it, and it was WELL worth it. Jaws dropped, eyes popped out, and no matter how many times I counted Sam's fingers, there were only 10. (Divided up equally between two hands.)

These guys are very sensitive to fitting in with the other musicians. They CAN blow most of us out of the water, and maybe don't want to. I think at the halfway point they might have realised we wanted to be blown out of the water and did so. They're very excited about the music, and it's contagious.

Wish I'd had a chance to hear Ian's fancier guitar playing, but hopefully I will tonight.

About Dan Milner - the chorus was absolutely deafening when he sang The Leaving of Liverpool, and I've never heard the place as quiet (and it was packed) as it was when he did West Rutland Marble Bawn. Last night was just too short!

I will also say that Sam's accordian managed to drown out the rock band doing a sound check upstairs. I really enjoyed that as well. *smirk*

Lorna, you should come next time even if they manage to not accidentally wind up in Florida.

Jeri, (In cold, rainy New Hampshire)

The session ROCKED last night, it had so much momentum with great tunes and songs, excellent!! It was great to meet all the catters there, excellent.

Speak to you later,

Cheers, Sam

Bill here,

I called into a supermarket to buy a carton of cigarettes yesterday and was asked if I was over 18. I said "You must be joking!!", she replyed "NO, its company policy", she then asked for a form of identification, so I showed her my passport and she actually checked my date of birth, it made my day. They usually ask if I am qualified for a senior citizen discount!! So theres not much of a gap to bridge now!

Had to be one of the best sessions I've been to in many years & the lads were no small part of being the reason for it. The tone was warm & welcoming to everyone, as if the new faces were instead, old friends that hadn't been seen & heard of in some long time. The tunes & singing was such a well mixed stew you'd had thought God had a hand in playing the roll of cook. Jeri should change profession to being a PR woman, she had CD sales for the Boys & Dan going a such a feverish pitch the scene almost took on the appearance of a betting parlor, of course after hearing Dan sing & Bill, Sam & Ian playing, Jeri definitly had something fine to work with to get the CD steam up & going. It's difficult to imagine that even in heaven you'd be hard put to have an evening that could equal last night's pleasure or this morning's afterglow. Barry

Sam asked if I wanted to be in charge of sales. :-)
I just noticed the guys had said nothing about the stack of CDs on the table, and thought they might not be comfortable with self-promotion, so my big mouth and I got busy.

I just realised I was encapsulated in my own little room of sound. I had Sam on my left, Ian on my right, and Barry & Dan in back, with the front being aimed at the folks across the table. No wonder my ears were ringing when I left. I generally loathe being physically crowded, but it felt more like being wrapped in a warm blanket last night.

It was funny. Ian, Bill and Sam showed up in the middle of a tune. I thought Ian was going to hurt himself getting his box out! He had that look like "Oh, shit - gotta play...gotta, gotta, GOTTA PLAY NOW!" While the tune was going, they just sort of flowed into seats and fitted themselves into the music. I was grinning from ear to ear, and the expressions on everyone else's face looked like "Who, boy - this is gonna be a good'un!"

Sorry I can't shut up about it. It was one of those times I don't ever want to forget - when the music and comraderie are perfect, and you can just float on the energy.

Well, it was a considerable drive of 540 miles round trip but the opportunity to see Barry Finn and Bill Sables, and to meet Sam & Ian was just too enticing. Barry and I were seated directly behind them so we did not miss much of the full force of the "Bridging the Gap" trio... just a great sound!

It was my first trip to The Printing Room. When I arrived at 5pm, there were 18 or 20 musicians and singers there already. That number had probably doubled by 9pm. I didn't even bother taking my guitar out of the case. It was a very enthusiastic, friendly and talented group and they appreciated the trio very much.

Bill seemed in great nick despite the long journey and Sam & Ian seem like they have lived in America all their lives. Barry told me he has good stamina. He looks more wiry than before. He sang a couple of songs and it was just great to see and hear him. Bat Godess and Crumudgeon (how do you spell it?) were very gracious as hosts. As always, it was a delight to be with Jeri and to see Naemanson again. I'm sure I've forgotten someone.

I'm headed to England tomorrow night, (doing my bit to try to restore musical balance!. I'll be at The Mersey Shanty Festival June 8 - 10. If any UK 'Catters need additional details, come over and say 'hello'.

All the best,
Dan Milner

"The Press Room" and Curmudgeon. (Although I think I like "Crumudgeon" better.) Dan, it's truly an honor to know you, and even be "shushed" by you.

Honestly, although the appearance of our honored guests was set up here at Mudcat, there weren't a whole lot of Mudcatters in attendence. Naemanson, Barry, Bat Goddess & Curmudgeon, NH Dave and myself who are regulars or semi-regulars. John Nolan dropped in, and of course Bill, Sam, Ian, and Liam's Brother, who winds the prize for most miles traveled to get to a session.

I want to hear what these guys sound like when it's their gig, so I'm shortly headed up to Brunswick. I woke up with a migraine this AM, and wasn't sure I'd be able to make it, but it seems to be under control.

Curmudgeon here. Now its my turn to express my most heartfelt thanks to all our wonderful guests (Naemanson, Bill, Sam, Ian, and Dan; Barry is more of a regular) at last night's Press Room session, certainly one of the most memorable ever. It is often challenging to maintain a balance there - too few musicians, too many musicians, an occasional desire for a can of fiddle or banjo repellent. Yet despite the nearly overwhelming number of musicians there pesent, the room was pervaded by a magic that transcended the usual flaws attendant in such circumstances and made for a truly vibrant session.

I just got home from the concert in Brunswick. The crowd was smallish and a bit reserved, however Ian, Sam and Bill ROCKED! There were rumors of music afterwards, but for various reasons, I decided it was best to head home.

I managed to score the new 422 CD - Sam found one. Sam, I hope you weren't saving that for someone! If it was Max, I'd be happy to cut an MP3 or several and send them to him.

In any case, it was wonderful to hear these guys perform. They are as adept at expressing emotion in a poignant slow tune or song as they are at driving the fast ones. Too bad we didn't have an opportunity to see Sam dance!

The ability (maturity) to be able to distinguish tempo is a pre-requisite for serious musicianship. These fellas understand the difference between fast, slow, wack-a-doo and in-between very well. I was most impressed with their maturity. Even Bill Sables shows signs of considerable maturity.

Sorry to have missed the concert.

Well, the first concert of the tour is done. What a night! Disaster followed by a triumphant victory. Those who didn't make it to the concert will be sorry they missed it and they'll know it because those were there will be talking about it for a week.

Jeri commented on the crowd being reserved. Can't help that, most of them are from Maine and a little reserved in everything they do. Kendall can speak to that. All I know is they were effusive in their gratitude to me for bringing the guys out.

We started the evening with supper. I made spaghetti with garlic bread. Bat Goddess and Guest Winterbright (one of the many good guests) came to join us. Jeri was also supposed to join us but she never arrived. She later said something about getting lost and not being able to find Bath. Little did I realize that her failure to arrive was the harbinger of greater disaster looming on the horizon.

Bat Goddess and Winterbright headed in to the church while I rounded up the rest of the gang and loaded the car. We had to stop off at a friend's house, a caterer, to pick up the goodies for the refreshment table. My timing was off so we arrived at the church a little late. People had started to arrive.

But the worst part of the evening was just beginning. The common room for the Unitarian Church is in the basement. Our weather in Brunswick yesterday included the heaviest rain we've had in months.

When we got to the room we found Bat Goddess and Winterbright madly fighting a flood with mops and squeegees. All the carefully positioned chairs had been pushed aside, the sound system was in danger, the wall hanging on the left side of the stage was soaked and had been raised so you could see the junk it usually hides, and wires were up off the floor and hanging from mike stands and chairs. And right behind me were the paying guests.

We fought the flood. Ian and Sam and Charley Noble helped out with the mops and squeegees and Dahlin and I moved the sound system to the other side of the room. Somehow we brought order out of chaos and only started a few minutes late.

And the boys were brilliant. Everything Jeri says is true. Those two boys might be young but it doesn't show in their music. They display an understanding of the music that shines when they pick up their instruments. Through the evening people kept thanking me for bringing them to Maine. It was an evening few of us, the boys, the audience, and my volunteers will ever forget. And then, at the end of the evening, the final disaster. Jeri had brought a cheesecake for our desert. But at the end of the evening she decided to head for home rather than join us at my house. And she forgot to leave the cheesecake!

What a night! It was unforgettable for both our triumphant victory over the various disasters and for the wonderful sound of Sable, Pirt, and Stephenson.

Actually, I have to disagree with Jeri's assessment of the crowd being "reserved". As I look back over the evening the applause was generous, tere were some enthusiastic shouts after a particularly hard driving piece, and everyone was generous in their appreciation of the band's hard work.

The only way they could have been more enthusiastic would have been to jump up on their chairs and wave their lighters around. And that would never do in Maine.

What's wrong with jumping on chairs and waving lighters?
OK, what I meant by "reserved" at 2 AM was that they were from Maine, but I didn't want to say that after absconding with the cheesecake! I was mainly brain-dead when I posted, and made it sound like folks were sitting there doing crossword puzzles or something, which isn't what I meant. When I looked at the other audience members, I saw toes tapping, faces smiling, seats being danced in and laps being played. There were few whoops and hollers, but I guess that was my job. And yes, I felt very welcome there - the warmth was evident, even if it was quiet warmth.

I did, in fact, never find Bath. I'm fairly sure it exists because it's on the maps, but I was lost for about 1.5 hours and gave up to start the search for the church.

The sensitivity these guys have to the music is incredible. At the Press Room, Liam's Brother asked Sam to accompany him on Leaving of Liverpool. Very tasty - he knew just how to showcase the song. The same was was true of all of them last night. They know just how to do some amazingly original things with the music without overpowering it or stepping on a song. They have the exuberance of youth (even the kid with the beard) and the skill and understanding of masters. It was fun to watch the communication between them on the stage. "OK, this is where we get all quiet and delicate," then "Now let's hit it hard and soar through the roof!" Mostly this was done with eyebrows and head tilts.

It was good to hear Ian play guitar. Other than a bit of rhythm guitar, he didn't have a chance to play at the Press Room - just too noisy. Not being a guitar player myself, it still sounded beautiful, and I don't have a clue how he can fingerpick while holding the flat pick in the same hand.

Naemanson, I thought about the migraine coming back in the morning and me having to drive home with it. I thought it was best to do the drive while the headache wasn't very bad. Now I have to find something to do with the cheesecake - what a dilemma!

This was getting a bit long, so I started a new thread.

I included all the guys, since we wound up talking about all of them. If anyone wants to start threads on individuals, please do.

The new thread is here: Tracking Sam, Ian and Bill (part II)
