Excuse in advance my English If I make some mistakes but I wanted to reply this:

A friend of mine introduiced me to Folk Dancing and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. He used to practice Morris Dancing and to see his interest I wanted to discover it.

Last year by chance I assisted to a festival and had that opportunity to see what Morris Dancing is. I utterly enjoyed myself, it was wonderful to see all that coordination. It was a particular atmosphere where joy music and rythm were mixed.

Being narrow minded that is crap!

Morris dancing is just drinking in fancy dress:-)

We put on a colourful show for the public, we enjoy ourselves and we get pissed. Nowt wrong with that!

Now if someone can explain what's so facinating about watching 22 men kick a leather clad pig's bladder round a field...:-)

Presumably this thread should be "Isn't Morris dancing crap"?

Watch your spelling, punctuation and capitalisation, Whippet.

And no, it isn't. It's just not as good as Rapper or Longsword.

Dear French Guest,

Your reply was wonderfully refreshing. I used to enjoy contra dancing before my knee went bad, and I understand what you're saying about music, rhythm, and movement completely. I miss it very much, but it's got way too much pivoting on the right knee for me to put my knee at risk. I really appreciate your positive attitude, and hope you become a member of mudcat soon!

English Jon- Whilst whippet's use of "i'nt" may have simply been an error as you suggest, when I first read it I presumed (s)he was using it to imitate the common spoken form, as in the "Int milk brilliant!" catchphrase from The Fast Show. If our American friends can use *ain't*, then we can have *int* if we want!

Having said all that it probably was just a typo.

And I'm just waiting for someone to resurrect the debate about the anti-semitic nature of morris dancing again....

Hehehehe....

All I can say is that with all that 'fertility' they are flicking about with their hankies, etc, PLUS their capacity for alcoholic beverages, then cross-dressing is hardly the kind of alternative pursuit that Morris Dancers would follow if the narrow-minded were to succeed in turning the unwashed masses against it....

IanC - if it's a regional aphorism, surely it should be "I'n't"?

Anyway, name a region of England that capitalises Verbs, e.g. Dancin (should be dancing, or dancin' if we are to allow abbreviations). Come to think of it, the noun "crap" is usually lower case too, methinks.

So, Jus' Call me a Ped'nt.

I still think Rapper is much more fun.

Just a small point: The contraction of shall not is usually written shan't, not sha'n't. Written English doesn't follow nice easy rules all of the time.

Oh and it is quite commonplace to capitalise the initial letters of the main words in a title.

I used to think so
This year I went to Sidmouth for the first time and one of the most enduring memories is the morris dancing teams from one end of the Esplanade to the other. The huge crowds watching didn't think they were crap, and after a couple of days neither did I. They were there entertaining people, through rain and hot sun. By the end of the week I wanted to be a stick weilding black faced Shropshire Bedlam or an Ouse Washes Molly Dancer. Lifes too short to be cynical about everything and one thing about most of them Morris dancers is they are far fitter than me and without the beerbelly.

I'm a relative newbie and I love International folk dancing of all kinds. I love dance, full stop. It's not so far removed from loving music. Morris dancing is delightful, if you just let yourself be delighted by it. It's as much fun as a good square dance or a polka or a jitterbug, or watching Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire.

Whippet
I personally have never danced any morris and probably never will but I will defend the right of any morrisbod (&/or bodess) to prance around waving there software, espcially if there are 10 of them with a stick and a sword in their hand.
AND just what is all this about very personal tastes in satorial orientations? Huh?
AND You might as well come clean - what is your stand on BODHRANS? Eh? EH?
you'll find there are at least two of every kind here on the Mudcat so any opinion will evoke someones ire but it helps to have a few positive opinions, if you want to enjoy.

If you capitalize Morris then you should capitalize dancing. Something to do with 'agreement' I think.

Anytime I hear Stan Rogers song "The Idiot" I can just picture Morris Dancers dancing to that tune. I believe I read somewhere's that they actually dance to that tune. I never seen them dance before, but I was at a couple of website that are devoted to Morris Dancing, and it was "quite" a interesting site.

As someone said "To each his own" Let them dance until the sun goes down and goes up.

High energy level, coordination, rhythm, interaction, and so on make Morris Dancing a uniquely enjoyable treat. Why not open your mind, develop an appreciation for dance in general and then take a look at Morris Dancing again. With your degree of sensitivity to dance, your next thread may be "Isn't Music Crap" Sorry, but such negativity begats negativity.

Criticism of Morris Dancing from "Blackadder":

Edmund: Morris dancing is the most fatuous tenth-rate entertainment ever devised by man: forty effeminate blacksmiths waving bits of cloth they've just wiped their noses on. How its still going on in this day and age I'll never know.

Not MY opinion, though. I've never even seen a Morris Dancer, but I'm a huge fan of effeminate blacksmiths.

Beyond crap, I'm sure that it is just a flash in the pan. It won't last. While we're at it who do these classical freaks think they are anyway. Why would anyone give old buggers like Beethoven and Bach a listen at all--and writers like Dickens and Joyce, GIVE ME A BREAK.

Give me Britney Spears any day for something that will last. Well, I'm off to stick my head in a bucket. Can't be too broad minded.

I think whippet had a perfectly reasonable point. What makes some of us most uneasy about Morris is the explanation that it is a fertility rite of pre-industrial, even pre-Christian, origin, not just rugby and drinking by other means. These same people then practice it in such a way as to beat any sense of ritual or magic out of the dance and its special sennse of occasion.

I seem to remember an article in an EFDSS publication that gave strong evidence that the origin of Morris was in German courtly dances.

People say what ever they like without any need for evidence and they can dance likewise.

But some bits of folk dance/song/lore do go back a long way and affect some of us emotionally in ways that pop, classical and Morris at the end of the pier on a sunny day do not.

Is 'Hal an tow' a Victorian creation or something much older? That Fire ceromony with barrels of burning tar? Northwest Morris in tiny pennine towns is that also Victorian or does it have a deeper heritage? It strikes a strange chord with me.

Ere's a man oo obvoisly don't unnerstand iz eritage. Us Engerlish fully realoise the significuns of Murris Darncing. The earliest to me own knowledge recorded dance is the Orn Dance of Abbots Bromley. The significance of the hankies depends on the time of year. In the winter theyre useful for blowin yer ooter. In the summer they represent the spreading of the sperm on to Mother Earth to fertilise Her. Of course the Church are very interested in CONTROL of such powerful PAGAN symbology and so have been instrumental in marginalising the importance of the Ritual aspect of Morris. Whil most English are taught about the Nazi's they arent taught about theyre true heritage. I fully concur with the idea that 22 men kicking a gas filled bladder about is any different. The only difference here is that they seem to get a lot of commercial support.

Abbots Bromley????? Isn't that the dance that was 'improved' by the Vicars wife in the 1800s? The Horns have been carbon dated (can't remember the date) but that doesn't mean people used them to dance with from that date. I guess the stag used them for a while

There's nowt wrong wi' Morris Dancing - some of t'silly buggers who gawp at folks doing it, tho', abaht them I'm not so sure!

Can't keep up the dialect - who snuck "Aphorism" into it? I've always thought that meant a neat saying, a quick ripost or a pithy comment, not an attempt to render a dialect in phonetic latin characters.

Always wanted to contribute an "Mfourism" - one of those crafty comments you think of about ten minutes too late, but delivered at speed for once. (A4, M4 - geddit - oh never mind).

Would a miners side that danced with lights in their hats be Wolseley dancers?

Chacun a son rite de futilite!

A short answer to your question, whippet - "NO"

What about the team that dances in black leather biking gear and uses scaffold poles and pick handles? Manitas taught them (or at least, their founder) all they know... except about bike leathers...

I didn't teach their founder. He was Dick Shepherd and he taught me. I taught a few of the the bikers (along with Brian Russel) when they first joined but that must have been 15 years ago now. I bet they've changed the dancing quite a bit in that time.

In the immortal (immoral?) words of Les Barker: Waving handkerchieves
Waving handkerchieves
Bid fat men with bells on
Waving handkerchieves
(to the tune of 'Bringing in the Sheaves')

Morris dancing is crap! It must be, or I, and thousands of others, wouldn't waste a lot of our spare time doing it...

It's a means to an end - the end being some serious drinking!!

As to dances where you grab hold of women - ours is a mixed side (heh, heh!).

Why do we wear bells? To annoy the blind as well as the deaf...

And we all know why we aren't circumcised...

Hi All. I danced the morris for many years with Derby Morrismen, But I fear that my dancing days are over since tearing a ligament at hergakitty's birthday party.

In my opinion there are three main reasons why people dance (regardless of the type of dancing).

1) To be part of a team. A natural human condition. In morris this is usualy associated with large amounts of beer and sexual inuendo. See Ripley Morris!

2) To demonstrate prowess in athleticism (what I call "White Shoe Morris"). See Shropshire Bedlams.

3) To express a deep rooted, emmotional, empathy with some sort of pagan, earth mother, etherial being who helps the crops to grow. Which was Derby Morrismen's original ideal.

I personaly only ever danced for the "White Goddess" and I know many others who feel the same.

More Power To Your Ankles!!!

Dave Barnes.

P.S. I don't blame Kitty or Herga Morris for my recent injury. I blame the 8.5 abv cider at Sidmouth.

I was a young man, I was a rover.

Dave B.

Abbots Bromley horns have been carbon dated to 1065 (ominous date) and are reindeer (not snow darling).
Reindeer were extinct in about 600 AD in Britain.
Not a lot of people know that.

I have been to Saddleworth and seen them dance. I used to dance with Gorton. Saddleworth danced at the Gorton Rushworth cart. One year the ended the processional just behind Fiddler's Fancy ( one of many excellent Womens sides). Somebody said to one of Saddleworth MEN Oh, I see you are dancing with women now! The joker was struck by the MAN and left in an ambulance. It is the only case of violence I think I have witnessed at any Folk event. I think is said something about that deepseated uncertainty about what MEN are doing dancing together

Hi Les,No.1. son (JohnJ) used to dance for Saddleworth b ut always maintained that Gorton Rushcart was superior. I went a couple of times to Gorton and saw the Horn Dancers there. Why did it ever finish? I heard it was something to do with the council refusing to provide accommodation for the many sides who took part. So Chris of Gorton Tank told me. A great pity.

I wouldn't describe my Morris Dancing performances as crap, but sometimes they can be on the ropy side.

Now my whistle playing is usually crap, and my singing isn't always quite as good as I would like, but:

I DO ALL OF THEM TO GIVE PLEASURE TO MYSELF. If anyone else gets pleasure out of them, that's a beneficial side effect, not the point of the activity.

And Bagpuss, Lewis Carroll definitely used sha'n't rather than shan't. But I don't think anyone would seriously use it today.

DEAD SERIOUS reply

Most impressive Morris display I ever saw was one watched from a kids' eye view. we were in the tent ...excuse me...MARQUEE at Dartmoor Festival a couple of years ago and a some of my kids joined a group of youngsters watching the dancing. I joined them, mainly to make sure the kids didn't get trampled. We saw a lot of good displays. Then a bunch of big guys thundered in, banging sticks and doing a sort of violent skip around the marquee. Bearing in mind we were sitting on grass; the very earth vibrated, the kids shrank back in terror, their eyes were wide and they couldn't look away. A couple of the youngest actually started to cry. I began to get a real sense of ancient ritual. It was menacing and thrilling. Anyone who finds it namby-pamby should sit on the floor within inches of all those size 11 hobnail boots as they thunder by...

keep going all you Morris dancers, there are people out here who love you... Cheers Deni

Morticia is this a threat ? nice and peaceful pursuit. Cats Paw KKK ? as someone points out same colours. Leeniea - it's by it's nature a pseudonym but it's not that one. Brid Widder - Garland Dancing ? do us a favour it's for birds with fat arses that one. My thoughts on bodhrans are exactly the same by the way and I'll end this epistle by quoting Oscar Wilde eveyone should try everything once except Morris Dancing and Incest. I think the "everything but Morris Dancing & incest" quote is actually Thomas Beecham, not Wilde.

Sorry to come to this thread so late: some joker has wiped out 20% of Chesterfield's phones by pouring petrol into a junction-box & setting it alight.

Speaking as one who once did, I think the Morris is best enjoyed by doing, not by watching. I had a friend who used to say "I do it because it makes me feel like a man."

I don't know if Whippet's statement about Morris Dancing was just to stir things up or not, but he/she did a good job. I am pleased to see a healthy lack of bigotry from most of the replies, but this is only what I would expect from folk fans. This sort of ignorant comment is what I would excpect from the less well informed ie:-'The Great English Public' who seem to take great delight at pouring scorn their own traditions and heritage such as traditional music, morris dancing and other 'folk customs'. These people poke fun at anything English and then rave over Irish, Scottish and Welsh culture. The Irish, Welsh and Scottish are proud or their culture and heritage whilst the English take the piss out of their own. There that's got that off my chest. Les

Jane2001 - let me have a list of their dates please!! While I will not deny that there are some extremely sexy looking dancers out there (mentioning no penguins), there are a vast majority of not so sexy ones. There are nice bums, good tums and hairy chests. Just not all on the same dancer, or even in the same team!

Garland dancing may be for girls with fat arses, but I've never done one in my life and don't intend to start now - and if it's about fat arses, I think I should know, don't you??

A note for the benefit of Whippet, and others holding similar opinions.

Morris dancing is a bit like football. In both, there are great teams, good teams, mediocre teams, and struggling teams. (And, as in football, even good teams sometimes have a bad day.) You may well have witnessed a few dire performances, but wait until you've seen it at its best before condemning the entire art form.

And if you still don't like it after that? Well, next time you encounter a team of Morris dancers in the street, just pass us by and get on with your sad life, while we (and our audience) carry on having fun in our own way! It doesn't harm anybody, and it gives a lot of people a lot of pleasure. If it's not your cup of tea, then go drink your coffee, and belt up!

And to the other contributors to this thread ...

Wassail!

Just back from the Toronto Ale, had a great time, approx 120 or so dancers from 16 different sides/teams/whatever. At least two Mudacatters. I guess we can't all be wrong can we. There were four sides there that do a dance to Stan's The Idiot, although only two did their dance this weekend. All in all had a bloody great time. Plenty for everone, TVI for LTS lots of young fit bums there, or so I heard several of the ladies commenting. Even a few on other sides who would have interested Whippet, from his second posting. Anyone seen the Californian side who "sew" their bells on? Thanks for the general air of support, we have lots of fun doing it, glad that MOST others have fun watching. Let me be a pain in the arse.

Either Morris (and other alleged ritual dance) is just social dancing about and having a laugh, in which case lets leave it at that.

Or, it is very old, possibly of pagan origin and has some probably ritual origin and purpose. This is the line put about by EFDSS, the Morris Ring, Dancing England and most Morris dancers when asked about it.

In which case why do so many sides cheapen a possible ancient ritual dance by performing anywhere, anytime for anybody and often being very silly at the same time?

15 Years with Wyre Fores.. a great side dying for lack of younger support. Morris is a tradition that is slowly being eroded by time. As for it's value it has provided me with friends, entertainment and a means to Show the goddess that we are still around..

If any of you types with a positive attitude towards the dancing live with in 30 miles of Wakefield and fancy having a go at North West style Morris (clogs on the feet and shortish sticks or slings in the hands), it's the time of year when we let a small number of new recruits join us at Wakefield Morris and teach them how to dance.

When recruits have 4 dances under their belts we kit them out with clogs and all the gear and take them out dancing with us.

We've danced all over England and taken parties abroad to Germany and Ireland.

If you're interested in having a go, drop me an Email to Chris_walker6@hotmail.com, or add a thread on here.
