Realized I hadn't been here in at least three system crashes and thought I would drop by and say hi to one and all. See you again in a year or so.

David

obligatory lyric

This spam is mine God gave this spam to me This square, and pinkish spam to me And though it's in a can Because of what I am With some eggs and toast A breakfast it shall be

Spam for you and me

It's never old And it is fairly sugar free This spam is mine! It's there for me! (sustain)

Blackcatter

It's good bait for carp, but what would you do with one of them?

Truth to tell it's good bait for gnomads as well.

hi, guest david! ...welcome!

I remember spam sandwiches in my lunch when I was a kid--"Spam", "Klik", "Kam(?)" and other generic equivalents....I didn't mind it cause, unlike beef, ham, pork or chicken, it didn't have any discernable fat or rind--I was one of those kids who couldn't stand mixed textures.

And I remember mom, glazing a loaf of Klik for a meal--yuk!

I think I'm sidling towards vegetarianism, albeit involuntarily...

Somewhere in the deep dark recesses of my pantry, lies a can of Spam from around 1942, very likely a collector's item by now. With fond memories of my mother feeding me that stuff, Rustic

Well, RichM, I will have to admit that I have myself glazed a loaf -- of Spam, not Klik -- and served it to my family. I haven't done it in years, because Spam's got so much fat, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I happened to feel like it and had a can of Spam on hand. Believe it or not, it's really tasty! The glaze is made with frozen orange juice concentrate, brown sugar, ginger, and clove, and it's really good on ham or pork roast, too. That I still do.

I do like the Spam lyric! Does it have a tune?

Cheers, Nancy

Nancy, glad you still enjoy the traditional hot spam loaf! I must admit, I sometimes grind up the leftovers from a ham for ham salad sandwiches, like mom used to make with spam, spam, or spam..

:)

You cook spam the same way you cook carp. Put the spam on a board, cover it with mud. Cook it for an hour at 400 degrees. Then take it out of the oven. Throw away the board and the spam and eat the mud.

One of these days, we'll figure out what Spam is really made of and then God help us. Had it frequently while growing up. Also have not-so-fond memories of Spam, Spam hash etc during my mispent youth as a sailor. And yes, Monty Python did do a Spam song. By the by, anyone who thinks pork is the other white meat hasn't had spam. Beside everyone knows the other white meat is roadkill. ;~) Kindest Spamalicious regards, Neil

The tune is the theme from Exodus. And, yes, Spam is the state food of Hawaii. Hawaiians eat more Spam per capita than residents of any other state. A big favorite is Spam musubi...see one of the sushi threads for further explanation. It's just one of the things that makes these islands, er, different.

Aloha,
Mark
Who was a vegetarian for 10 years and then took advantage of divorce to start eating fish again (imagine living in Hawaii all these years and not eating fish!), but has never ever eaten Spam.

We used to get Spam fritters for school lunch. Spam only ever came in tins. I just thought it was invented for WWII and rationing - Now we have instant food like the Big Mac I thought Spam had been relegated to history books..

When I was a kid (in early WW-II) my working-woman mother would often ask my (5 years older) brother and me, "What do you want for supper?"

The answer often was "Spam and sweet potatoes!" Actually, it was 1/2 inch slices of Spam, fried, with warmed-up canned sweet potatoes, and with canned cranberry sauce.

Oh, the surpassingly great sauce it was served with: youthful appetite!
