(Hello!) My name is Joe! (My name is Joe!) I've got a wife, (I've got a wife,) I've got five kids. (I've got five kids.) I work (I work) In a button factory. (In a button factory.) One day, (One day,) My boss said to me: (My boss said to me:) "Hey, Joe! ("Hey, Joe! ) "Are you busy?" ("Are you busy?") I said, "No." (I said, "No.") He said, (He said,) "DO THIS!!" ...at which point the leader performs some body motion that the audience emulates. Chant repeats while more motions are added at the end of each verse. At the end of the series of chants, when everyone is gesticulating wildly, the speaker starts the chant as usual but ends with: "Hey, Joe! ("Hey, Joe! ) "Are you busy?" ("Are you busy?") I said, "YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!" Now, my question to you is: what are the body motions? I've only heard the chant; I've never seen it performed. |

Right arm comes next, counterclockwise. Then left leg/foot, raised off ground and circling in same direction; then the right. Then head moving side to side. Then the "YESSSSSSS!" I've seen Bill Wellington include it in concerts, but I vaguely recall that I actually learned it from someone else, in which case Bill's version may differ from the above. |

I'm assuming here that everyone is sitting down, if both feet must be off the ground at the same time! Any variations for kids who are standing (such as, at an outdoor concert?) Hopping on one foot, perhaps? In the version I've heard on the radio, the chant has a couple of variations, thrown into one round or another by the speaker to break up the monotony: "Five little kids" instead of "five kids"; "Joe!" or "Umm, Joe..." instead of "Hey, Joe!"; "I said, 'Not really' " instead of "I said, 'No' ". |

I've done it in summer camp, and I need some affirmation before I do it with my music students. True to the folk process, I have a different last line and these motions. My boss say "Good, push this button", and I mime pushing a button with my right hand. The next time through its "kick this lever (left foot)", then "turn this dial (left hand)" then "ring this bell (forehead)". I've seen people incorporate ears, tongues, toes and the like before the last resounding YESSS! |

For the movements,I've had my students 'turning buttons' with the right, then left hands; then keeping the toes on the floor, turning the button with right then left feet, turning the ankle from side to side. Then add the elbows, as if flapping wings (while still turning the buttons with hands and feet), first right then left; finally nodding the head for the seventh verse. Doing it this way, it can be done either standing or sitting, and it keeps the ambient noise level to a minimum (all those feet stomping up and down frenetically can get to be overwhelming). Also, since my kids know the cant, we don't echo it. You can teach it easily enough - one or two listenings is all it takes, then their off. It carries on so after pushing with the left hand it goes i got a wife and one kid and when he finally goes thru the whole song (right hand, left leg, right leg, bum, nose, head etc) you go to the last verse.... ....are you busy i said YES!! its a great song, i learned it in girl guides. we used to have competitions to see who could sing it the fastest!! |

At this point, I'm teaching K and 1 general music, junior and senior high choruses and music theory. If I had my 'druthers, I'd be singing and playing for little kids all the time. They're the best audience; elderly audiences are a very close second. Both are extremely appreciative of our offerings. Rhythm and motion stuff is the mainstay of what I do. Afterward, she visited me & performed what she had learned for me, which included the above chant, complete with movements most of which are mentioned above, as well as jumping, spinning, & other movements which I have forgotten. She also learned something about "Little Jaws, na na, nanana . . ." and jaws kept getting bigger till jaws eats you, or something like that. And to think that the wildest chant I ever did in a music class was the good old "Bearhunt." |

I said Yo He said = you busy? .... I said no Then push this button with your hand So I pushed the button with my hand [ok.. here we go..mmm] Yo my name is Joe etc..... so push this button with.... The other hand your foot the other foot your bum your head your tongue He said Joe I said Yo he said ..you busy? and I said YES! Instead of adding moves like pushing buttons they add an instrumental rhythm in each verse and the sounds and rhythms layer throughout the song. It is awesome! The words are slightly varied in each verse "Hello, my name is Joe. I got a wife. And I got five kids. I work, in a button factory. One day, my boss said to me. Joe! Are you busy? I said No. and she said, Do this. As the verses continue the singer sounds more and more stressed in both tone and lyric ..I got a wife. I got five little kids (with exasperation). I work all day... "I said, "not really.." etc... If anyone knows this particular artist please share. |
