A first rate series that left us relatively recently, about ten years ago: "I'll Fly Away" about black-white relations and a period piece of life in a part of the American South done with heart, wit, and not over-sentimentalized, starring the great Sam Waterston, Regina Taylor, and some support from Bill Cobbs.

Worth renting/ buying.

I remember Clutch Cargo. Conan O'Brien used if anything a more primitive version of the 'moving mouth' for some of his political 'interviews'.

That reminded me of a series about a trucker called "Cannonball" Can't remember any of the episodes, but the theme song was inerestin' for a single digit aged kid.

Donuel, it was Clutch Cargo. There were a few cartoons done in the same style. They filmed actors speaking the lines, then superimposed their lips over the cartoon characters faces. It was supposed to make the animation easier, but I thought it just looked creepy.

I also remember Ruff and Reddy. Just vaguely. How about Crusader Rabbit and Rags the Tiger - the forerunners of Rocky and Bullwinkle?

The Invaders was about human looking Aliens who looked just like us except they could not bend their little finger.

A really low budget cartoon : Chuck Cargo in which the figures were static and only their mouths sort of moved. It was sort of a spin off of the 50's Sky King that was filmed in B&W.

I now remember Ruff and Reddy !? and did not know I still had brain cells still dedicated to remember them.

Nostalgia ain't what it once was.

This afternoon the DJ on the local AM Country Music station asked "What was Mr. Magoo's first name" and then broke for a commercial. Two minutes later, when he came back from the commercial the answer was on the phone from a semi-juvenile who wasn't old enough ever to have seen one of the cartoons.

She admitted she got it from Wikepedia, and implied that she didn't really know who Mr. Magoo was.

But she won the four tickets to the upcoming shindig.

I wonder how many tv programs from the past are getting dusty in vaults. I remember the first time ( 1980ish?) I became aware of Jenny Seagrove, it was a tv mini-series which started with Jenny playing a sort of rich, feather-headed society type, but then the war comes along and she turns into a British spy parachuted into occupied France. That series, to my knowledge, has never been screened in the past 20 years.

'Power Without Glory' - Australian series shown in the UK around 1977. Concerned a family of Irish emigrants in Australia and the central character, Jack West, had ambitions to rise above his origins and become rich and powerful. Stymied at every turn by machiavellian Irish fenian priest.

I remember all the Gerry Anderson shows as well. It's funny how you never see puppets smoking on television anymore.

I also remember the Ovaltine/Nestles commercials that accompanied it.

I wouldn't call "Fireball XL5" and "My Favorite Martian" forgotten TV series. Quite the reverse. I've heard several times now how kids in Anchorage were at the TV watching Fireball XL5 when the Big '64 earthquake hit.

I did some research on the series I was trying to remember some ms's back, and apparently it was just called "Hank" and lasted about a season and was (one of) the first to have its last episode staged so as to rap up the loose ends.

I would sure like to see a bit of it to see how it reverberates 'round the ol' skull these days.

The aussie thing... it was called "The Stranger" and at the time (I was only little) I thought it was the greatest thing ever - mainly because the aliens had their own language, which actually seemed "right", i.e., it wasn't just a meaningless jumble of sounds. I can even remember some of the Soshunite dialogue. How f***ing sad is that?
This series came at a time when aliens were universally supposed to be nasty, and here we had "strangers" who were not only benign, but civilised, intelligent, etc. It was superb.

Was anyone else a fan of "Thriller"? It was a supernatural/mystery anthology series hosted by Boris Karloff. Originally I was going to ask if anyone knew if it was available on DVD, but decided to check first, so I googled "Thriller Boris Karloff" and got quite a few hits. It's available, all 67 episodes. I ordered a set, and I'll be in TV heaven when it arrives. And I'll be running around acting like an impatient kid until it comes. Is it here yet? When is it going to get here? Is it here now? I'll write a review when I get it. I hope it's as good as I remembered.

"Cagney & Lacy" They (Sharon Gless & Tyne Daly) are back at work & planning a reunion. That was a breakthru for women-CBS took a chance on it thinking it wouldn't do well. They were on the "View" two wks. ago.

Angie Dickinson as "Police Woman"--I think that was title.

Sada Thompson, William Broderick & the wonderful Christy McNichol as Buddy. Great show "Family."
Never missed it. Whay happened to Christy?

Going back to 1950- "Martin Kane-Private Eye" can't recall the actor's name.

Does anyone remember a series called "Sentimental Agent" ?
I can't remember a single thing about it except the theme music (for which I have no name, nor means of communicating to other 'catters) and part of the opening titles (B&W, of course), they involved a white sports car speeding throgh London streets and being stopped on Tower Bridge as it opens.
Not much to go on, I admit.

The Terrible Ten, originally produced as 10-minute fillers, showed the knockabout adventures of a group of children in the miniature hamlet of Ten Town, with a population of under-13s. (Filming was restricted to Saturdays because of the all-child cast.) It became the first Australian children's series with extensive overseas sales, selling to 20 countries.

Though the cast had to be replaced as they grew up, The Terrible Ten lasted 117 episodes, and led to a sequel series, The Ten Again (1963), and a feature film, Funny Things Happen Down Under (1965), starring a 16-year-old Olivia Newton-John.

The Millionaire, if I remember correctly. Interesting character studies. Started out the same way each time. Out of the blue, comes this guy who hands you a check for a million dollars, no strings attached, do with it what you will. But it was a different story each time. In some cases, it changed people's lives for the better in an almost miraculous way. In others, it was the ruination of them. Depended a lot on the situation--and the character--of the recipient. Kind of a thought-provoking program, I thought.

(Mainly to Nigel Parsons)

Be sure to post it when you've completed it!

Me, I've been working from the other end of it ...

With the Bird --jj
(I keep hearing this as a pseudo-reggae beat, but not actually reggae.)

I was shocked to discover that it didn't have much meat
Less than a serving to be found on the complete
Corpse of the critter -- Isn't it absurd
Now that I've caught it I haven't got a clue
What to do
With the bird.

I sent out to Acme for Szechuan and some soup
Scratched my noggin in the hopes that I'd recoup
Some of the sense and my old way with words
Now that I've caught it I'm no longer struck dumb,
Overcome
By the bird.

I take stock of myself, I've survived big explosions
Blows from big rocks and falls from great heights
I've become the Southwest's leading expert in quality control
Gone horribly wrong
I've grown strong

I was busy and non compos mentis to boot
I've wasted those years in a silly bird pursuit
Now I've revived, I'm sane and alert
I've caught it. It's bought it. Now I haven't got a clue
What to do
With the bird.

Hell's bells. I grew up on radio. You remember radio, don't you? You got the audio, but you made the pictures in your head. Captain Midnight, Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy, I Love a Mystery, the Lone Ranger, Gangbusters, the Green Hornet, the Shadow, Sam Spade. . . .    I always knew that behind his mask, the Lone Ranger looked like me.

Did you know that the Green Hornet (Britt Reid) is the great-nephew of the Lone Ranger (real name, John Reid)? Yup. Within the context, the two characters are indeed related.

I remember in the early Fifties people standing around outside stores that sold television sets (usually had several sets in the window, turned on) and gazing in hypnotized fascination at what? A test pattern.

When I was a kid there was show on (US) which in retrospect was about as innocent as a show can be, yet with that little touch of implied larceny. The way i remember it was a young man with no money was getting a college education by simply attending classes, in other words, an unregistered auditer. The classes on TV were never crowded, so the implication was he wasn't really stealing anything, he was merely 'smelling the stew'. But the college was aware of him, and someone would always be chasing him (of course, at that conclusion of each class when he'd had time to impress the prof with his intelligence.
There was also an implied irony that the kid ran so fast they never could catch him and the coach would've arranged a scholarship for him if only he'd stay still long enough to listen!
For years I remembered the show as "Run Buddy Run" but according to jumptheshark.com that was a different show about a man on the lam from gangsters. So I don't know what the show was called.

I am pleased to find that I may not be the oldest kid on the block. We got our first TV around 1950 back when there were few channels and transmission ended around midnight. I loved the cowboy movies on FRONTIER PLAYHOUSE. There are a few shows I'd love to see again
One of my favorites was a short lived series called something like Emergency Room. It starred Elliot Gould and the actress who plays Stands With a Fist in "Dances With Wolves", Mary something.
Here, in Philadelphia, we had a unique show. The local CBS affiliate produced a live action western program called "Action in the Afternoon". Because the show was performed outside the station, occasionally the viewers could see a bus or truck in the background of an old west shootout. I'd pay a pretty penny to see that again.

All I remember is at the beginning their was a guy in a space suite and he was sitting in a rocking chair on railroad tracks. Also I think some of the cast where in white space suites.

Ruff and REDDY, Don. The first Hanna-Barbera show, 1957-1960, 1962-1964. And I remember the theme song just as you do.

To steal from www.toontracker.com/ruffredd/ruffredd.htm:

Ruff and Reddy featured a brainy cat, Ruff, and a brainless dog, Reddy. Teamed with the kindly Professor Gismo, they faced such evil-doers as Killer and Diller, the terrible Texas twins, Captain Greedy and Salt Water Daffy, the chicken-hearted Chickasaurus, the Goon of Glocca Morra and others in various madcap adventures.
==========

And your favorite episode, "The Mad Monster of Muni-Mula," can be found there in RealVideo.

Up front, let me confess that I have not read through every posting in this thread, nor have I seen the "part I" thread. So if my question has already been addressed, my apologies.

Now, then, does anyone remember a cartoon series on American TV called "Ruff and Ready" (maybe it was Ruff n' Ready, or some alternate spelling)? I think the two main characters were a dog and a cat (don't remember which was Ruff and which was Ready.) I don't remember much else, accept that there were a series of episodes in which they went to a planet called "Muni Mula" - a planet made of aluminum ("Muni Mula" is aluminum spelled backwards, unless you're from Britain. :) ) That leads me to suspect that the show may have had a science fiction theme. I also remember fragments of a theme song "They're Ruff, and Ready, ???Ruff and Ready, they're tough, but steady, always Ruff and Ready, they sometimes have their little spats, even fight like dogs and cats, but when they need each other that's when, they're Ruff and Ready."

This would either have been the late 50's or the early 60's. From the dustbin of my mind.

Happy to oblige, Daithi ! I'd never come across that website before seeking it out yesterday, either, but had always fondly remembered 'Space Patrol'. Lovely to see those faces and that city again - and I must say, I'm rather tempted to get the videos too. When reminiscing with people, I've hardly ever come across anyone who remembers it, either - as you say, it must have clashed with something most people were watching on the other channel.

Here's another one: do you or anyone else remember an Australian series with children who had built their own fortress ? I used to love that one.

Cheers !

Mention of Road Runner brings this fragment to mind (Still working on a concluding verse) TTTo 'The Bubble Car Song'

Beep! Beep!
Nigel Parsons

While running down a country road, so much to my surprise.
I saw a pile of birdseed, of quite a gen'rous size.
I thought I'd stop and eat my fill, 'cos eating is my thing.
A giant rock fell past my head, and landed on a spring !

"Beep Beep, Beep Beep ", I just went "Beep Beep Beep."

The next day on the roadway then, I spied a railroad track.
It issued from a tunnel I remembered as a crack!
While waiting for the crossing bells, I just admired the view.
Then came a mighty gust of wind. A train came driving through.

"Beep Beep, Beep Beep", I just went "Beep Beep Beep."

One day upon a mountain pass, a rocket followed me.
I thought I'd best protect my ass, and ran away with glee.
The rocket followed on so fast, I didn't dare to stop.
I dodged it round a sudden bend, avoiding quite a drop.

"Beep Beep, Beep Beep",I just went "Beep Beep Beep."
