Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Alba Date: 08 Apr 03 - 08:27 AM Was the show from the 60's with the marionettes called Stingray or maybe Thundersbirds? I used to watch the Prisoner but didn't really get it till years later lol. I also remember Juke Box Jury...hit or miss on Pop songs!!!!!! Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote though.....brilliant...Acme Company supplies !!!!! Does anyone remember Deputy Dawg and his side kick Muskey!! Wow now the memories are kicking in! |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: daithi Date: 08 Apr 03 - 08:10 AM Any Brits remember a marionette series that used to be on in the early 60s (clashed with Dr Who I think). It was a space show and featured gyroscope - type space ships and aerial shots of cities with passenger tube monorail/transport? Any info on name, etc gratefully received - it's been haunting me for years. Or how about that Australian import, for children, about kids who make contact with benign humanoid aliens - but nobody believes them until they arrive, seeking shelter from their doomed planet? No idea what it was called (offers?)but they were called Soshons and the planet they fled from, Soshunis... And what about The Prisoner? Criss Cross Quiz (with Bernard Braden's wife, Barbara Kelly)? The Planemakers? And the BEST cartoon of all....Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote!!! Great thread...Dáithí |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Little Robyn Date: 08 Apr 03 - 05:53 AM I think Ann Sothern's show was just called Susie (or Suzy). About 1970 there was a ridiculous show called The Banana Splits. They were crazy animals but I loved their theme - La la la, lala la la, la la la, lala la la. Then when my daughter was little we always watched the Elephant Show. We just love Lois, Sharon and Bram, and their friends/guests. Luckily, that was in the early days of VCRs..... |

Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Dave Bryant Date: 08 Apr 03 - 05:25 AM It's strange the way that some series seem to get re-played over and over again, while others seem to disappear without trace. Can anyone remember "Brass" (1983/4) that wonderful spoof on northern industrial romantic novels like those by Catherine Cookson. It starred Timothy West as the mine owner and Barbara Ewing as Agnes Fairchild the busty poor houswife whose blouse was always ripped open - usually by Bradley Hardacre or his son. |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Cluin Date: 08 Apr 03 - 02:45 AM The Friendly Giant. YES! Used to watch that one every day as a kid. With Rusty, the vaguely frightening rooster who lived in a sack on the wall in which he kept his harp and Friendly's other recorder. And of course, Gerome, the purple and orange giraffe with the voice and mannerisms of Lee Marvin, and who used to dance around like a stoner at Woodstock while Friendly and Rusty and the cats would jam on some old English hornpipe or something. It all go so much better with beer and pot, watching the reruns in University residence years later... Another cartoon I remember from my childhood and would love to see once more to see why I liked it, The New Adventures of Huck Finn. It had Huck, Tom & Becky as real-live kids, interacting with cartoon characters. I think Becky might have been my first crush or something. Another one I remember liking (and pretending to play with my friends) was Danger Island which was a short adventure series that usually aired during the Banana Splits. "Uh oh!... CHONGO!" |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Amos Date: 07 Apr 03 - 09:38 PM Spaw: Ok, I got the sequence of the seasons in her name wrong, one shot o' seltzer and a blast of Clarabelle's Ah-Oogah for me. But Ann Sothern wasn't Maisy, she was Oh, Suzy! if memory serves. Or "My Miss Suzy" or some darn thing like that. I remember the opening pan, complete with the long-forgotten sound of typewriter keys pounding away and Ann Sothern peering opver the tops of her glasses with a twinkle. So you have to sit through six advertisements for "All" detergent. A |

Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Steve Parkes Date: 03 May 02 - 03:42 AM Well, they made enough series, Spaw--somebody must have liked it. I was always impressed by the idea of a submarine with windows; how are you supposed to see where you're going, for heaven's sake? But I was most impressed that that grown men with all the resources of a US movie studio couldn't think of a better name for a submarine with windows than "Seaview"! I remember one Saturday evening back in the early seventies. We were sitting in the pub waiting for the rest of the gang to roll in when in burst Neil, whoi anounced dramamtically: "Kowalski didn't get beaten up!" Was that a record, does anyone know? Steve |

Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: SharonA Date: 02 May 02 - 05:44 PM Metchosin: Yes, normally the tune alone was played, but I was referring to a submission to the page you linked (http://www.tvparty.com/lostgiant.html): "I used to love watching Bob Homme as Friendly and Rusty and Jerome, and of course the rare appearances by those musical cats [Angie and Fiddle, two puppet cats, who'd play violins once a week].... Occasionally, they would perform concerts featuring the cats and of course the whole gang playing various instruments. I seem to also recall they even did a half-hour special, which was also a concert. "The theme song from FG was 'Early One Morning', which they mentioned once during a concert was an old song from the 16th century (I think).... In fact, during the same concert where they gave the name of the theme song, they played the song and Jerome sang the lyrics to the song." - Lynda VE So apparently the lyrics were sung only once, if this person's memory serves. |

Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: SharonA Date: 01 May 02 - 01:05 PM P.S. – Just read the link about "The Friendly Giant" (http://www.tvparty.com/lostgiant.html) and learned a lot: I'd always thought that the program was produced locally, in Philadelphia, just like those of Gene London, Pixanne, Sally Starr, Wee Willie Weber and Adam Android. But no! That link also mentions many details of the show that I'd forgotten: Rusty the Rooster popping his head up from Friendly's satchel hung on a wall peg; the drawbridge; the cow jumping over the moon; the lines such as "Once upon a time, not long ago and not far away..." and "...And for those who like to rock, a little rocking chair by the fireplace..." and "...look waaayy up..." I've forgotten how the theme song went. According to that tvparty page, it's "Early One Morning" (from the 16th century?). Is there a MIDI to the tune anywhere? The page mentions lyrics, too; can anyone find them? |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: SharonA Date: 01 May 02 - 12:36 PM Metchosin: "The Friendly Giant", not "Gentle"! That's right!!! Thanks for refreshing my memory, and for the link. Yes, Tone d'F, that's the guy. |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Metchosin Date: 01 May 02 - 11:37 AM The Friendly Giant was played by Bob Homme, who sadly went "Up, way way up" in 2000. Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Tone d' F Date: 01 May 02 - 11:21 AM Sharon A Was the Gentle Giant a guy who used to dress in medieval type clothes, tell stories then sing in a strong baritone? If so you've answered a long standing question |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: SharonA Date: 01 May 02 - 11:00 AM Mark: Nowadays, Channel 10 is NBC and Channel 3 is CBS! Channels 6 & 12 remain the same. 17 is WB (Warner Brothers), 29 is FOX, 48 is an independent station with some foreign-language programming. 57 is UPN, and 39 is another PBS station, WYBE. The days of the local kids' shows with local hosts are gone, and I think that's a shame. Back to Channel 12 for a sec... Remember the "Gentle Giant" show, with the giraffe puppet that would poke its head into the castle window, and the dollhouse furniture that the guy would move around as an invitation to kids to pull up a chair, so to speak, and listen to his stories? |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: Mark Cohen Date: 01 May 02 - 04:32 AM Mr. Wizard! Did you catch the clips of him on the GE commercials recently? Yes, musicmic, I remember WCAU Channel 10 (CBS), WFIL Channel 6 (ABC), and WRCV (later KYW) Channel 3 (NBC). Then along came WHYY Channel 12 (PBS)--I remember the day they started broadcasting. When the UHF stations started broadcasting (17, 29, and 48), my dad went out and bought a little portable TV set because channel 29 was going to be showing a tennis match. He played tennis, but very few people did, and even fewer had ever watched it on TV. Channel 29 also showed the original Roller Derby, which for some reason I watched avidly, as well as the early seasons of the Flyers hockey team. And in the evening they would show bullfighting from Spain! Weird stuff back then...What do you think today's kids are going to get nostalgic about? MTV? Jackass? Home Shopping Network? Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: musicmick Date: 01 May 02 - 12:43 AM Is anyone old enough to remember a live western adventure show called ACTION IN THE AFTERNOON? It was brodcast by WCAU-TV, the CBS station in Philadelphia. They shot it on their parking lot on City Ave, and sometimes a passing car or bus got into the picture. How about the early shows like MR. WIZARD or TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET or later sitcoms like YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH or MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY. Ther was MARTIN KANE, PRIVATE EYE with William Gargan and MR.and MRS. NORTH with Pamella Britton and Richard Denning (in later years he played the Governor on HAWAII 5 0) |

The best thing about that show, though, (which is the best thing about many of these shows) was the MAD Magazine parody, "Loused Up in Space". I still remember when they were starting to pass out because there was no oxygen on the ship, and one of them gasped out, a la Snow White: "Robot, robot, on the wall, we need fresh air for us all." The robot replied, robotically, "Why...not...open...the...window?" Aloha, Mark And remember who preceded Peter Graves' Mr. Phelps on Mission: Impossible? Subject: RE: BS: part II Forgotten TV series From: SharonA Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:33 PM Walrus: Nope, they were two different characters from two ifferent studios. Snidely Whiplash was the nemesis of "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties" (a Jay Ward creation – the guy who gave us Rocky & Bullwinkle). See link: http://flyingmoose.org/moose/whiplash.htm "Dick Dastardly & Muttley" came from the Hanna-Barbera team. See this page: http://www.hotink.com/wacky/dastrdly/ and also see the Hanna-Barbera link I posted earlier in this thread. BTW Muttley may have had a laugh similar to that of Quick Draw McGraw's Snuffles, but Snuffles was an earlier character by several years. Besides, Snuffles was one of the good guys, and Muttley most definitely was not. |
