He was a clown with this big, baggy suit on. The schtik was, he would produce items from his suit, like bananas, watermelons, apples, beach balls, etc with something like astonishment that they should be in there. He would say "oh!...oh...oh...WOW!" and produce a giant watermelon. The first thing that came out was a little train made out of foldable boards, which he assembled, and then filled with the other stuff in his suit. By the time he finished, this little seven-foot long train was full of items, and he would put on an engineer's hat, climb into the locomotive part, and drive it off. |

If you watch Drew Carey, you may have seen the T-shirts. If you grew up in a place that got the Cleveland TV stations, every kid was a Ghoulardi fan. Funny stuff based on the beatnik image of the late 50's/early 60's.....Ernie Anderson had quite a career. Last year, Hollowfox gave me a Ghoulardi T-Shirt that she'd taken to Old Songs and had signed by the 'Catters there. So to all of them and any of you who remember......... Oddly, the role of the woman having the operations was played by two people. I can't find the name of the first actress right now (the one wrapped in bandages), but the story goes that that actress was supposed to dub the voice for the second actress (the unwrapped one at the end of the show). The second actress, however, did such a good impression of the first one's husky voice that it was left on the soundtrack. The second actress's name: Donna Douglas (Elly May on "The Beverly Hillbillies")!! A couple of other classic TZ episodes: "Time Enough at Last" with Burgess Meredith as the nearsighted survivor of the H-bomb blast, who wanted only time enough to read, and was just about to settle down with a book in the ruined library when he broke his glasses... and "To Serve Man", the title of the book belonging to the Kanamits, 9-foot-tall aliens who visited Earth offering goodwill and taking humans back to their home planet (which seemed harmless enough when only the book's title had been translated... but the humans translate the rest of the book too late: it's a cookbook!). |

Snidely Whiplash was the nemesis of "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties" (a Jay Ward creation – the guy who gave us Rocky & Bullwinkle). In the early seventies a must watch in our house was Bronson a show about a guy travelling America on a motorbike. Onew of my favorite cowboy shows was one starring LLoyd Bridges circa 1969 called The Loner. Top of my list of forgotten shows has to be a dreadful thing called Dusty's Trail. The best thing about that show, though, (which is the best thing about many of these shows) was the MAD Magazine parody, "Loused Up in Space". I still remember when they were starting to pass out because there was no oxygen on the ship, and one of them gasped out, a la Snow White: "Robot, robot, on the wall, we need fresh air for us all." The robot replied, robotically, "Why...not...open...the...window?" Aloha, Mark And remember who preceded Peter Graves' Mr. Phelps on Mission: Impossible? And which two of the characters were married in real life? (this is SO much more fun than working!) |

B-9 was designed by the prop builder who designed Robby, Robert Kinoshita, but Irwin Allen hired Kinoshita to come up with a similar design that was not as costly to build. It was brodcast by WCAU-TV, the CBS station in Philadelphia. They shot it on their parking lot on City Ave, and sometimes a passing car or bus got into the picture. How about the early shows like MR. WIZARD or TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET or later sitcoms like YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH or MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY. Ther was MARTIN KANE, PRIVATE EYE with William Gargan and MR.and MRS. NORTH with Pamella Britton and Richard Denning (in later years he played the Governor on HAWAII 5 0) |

Yes, musicmic, I remember WCAU Channel 10 (CBS), WFIL Channel 6 (ABC), and WRCV (later KYW) Channel 3 (NBC). Then along came WHYY Channel 12 (PBS)--I remember the day they started broadcasting. When the UHF stations started broadcasting (17, 29, and 48), my dad went out and bought a little portable TV set because channel 29 was going to be showing a tennis match. He played tennis, but very few people did, and even fewer had ever watched it on TV. Channel 29 also showed the original Roller Derby, which for some reason I watched avidly, as well as the early seasons of the Flyers hockey team. And in the evening they would show bullfighting from Spain! Weird stuff back then...What do you think today's kids are going to get nostalgic about? MTV? Jackass? Home Shopping Network? Aloha, Mark |

Channels 6 & 12 remain the same. 17 is WB (Warner Brothers), 29 is FOX, 48 is an independent station with some foreign-language programming. 57 is UPN, and 39 is another PBS station, WYBE. The days of the local kids' shows with local hosts are gone, and I think that's a shame. Back to Channel 12 for a sec... Remember the "Gentle Giant" show, with the giraffe puppet that would poke its head into the castle window, and the dollhouse furniture that the guy would move around as an invitation to kids to pull up a chair, so to speak, and listen to his stories? |

But no! That link also mentions many details of the show that I'd forgotten: Rusty the Rooster popping his head up from Friendly's satchel hung on a wall peg; the drawbridge; the cow jumping over the moon; the lines such as "Once upon a time, not long ago and not far away..." and "...And for those who like to rock, a little rocking chair by the fireplace..." and "...look waaayy up..." I've forgotten how the theme song went. According to that tvparty page, it's "Early One Morning" (from the 16th century?). Is there a MIDI to the tune anywhere? The page mentions lyrics, too; can anyone find them? |

But I was most impressed that that grown men with all the resources of a US movie studio couldn't think of a better name for a submarine with windows than "Seaview"! I remember one Saturday evening back in the early seventies. We were sitting in the pub waiting for the rest of the gang to roll in when in burst Neil, whoi anounced dramamtically: "Kowalski didn't get beaten up!" Was that a record, does anyone know? Steve |
