Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: AliUK Date: 11 Jun 02 - 04:23 PM I would pull a sickie anyway Linda. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST Date: 11 Jun 02 - 04:33 PM Great employee relations decision, Linda. Everyone will work much harder for you now... |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 12 Jun 02 - 07:06 AM Well, we've got to put up with this for a little longer at least. Please note I am not giving away the result, there were permutations that would have England losing their last game of the group but going through. whether this was the case I'll not say. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 12 Jun 02 - 07:12 AM Saw the Eng/Nigeria match. Dull stuff mostly from England but 'the right result'. I'm concerned about the lack of goals from open play by England. BTW I am supporting Ireland too. Well played those lads. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 12 Jun 02 - 07:49 AM Well, it was not good, but it was good enough. I bet Argentina and France would swap places with either England or Ireland - or even the USA come to that. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: BanjoRay Date: 12 Jun 02 - 09:59 AM Took my car to the garage this morning during the rush hour in Doncaster - the streets were totally empty, and so was the town. It was like one of those movies where there's no-one else alive in the world. Where was everybody? Cheers |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Wolfgang Date: 12 Jun 02 - 11:57 AM Two goals is not a lot. But when I looked it up I was surprised how many teams have done that (come out successfully from the preliminary round with only two goals) before the English, among them Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. But the undisputed leader in this discipline (coming through with least goals and effort) is Italy. In 1982, they finished second in the preliminary round with no win and only two goals. In 1970, they even won their preliminary group with one single goal. They went on to win the final, later. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: catspaw49 Date: 12 Jun 02 - 02:15 PM alanbit says...."I bet Argentina and France would swap places with either England or Ireland - or even the USA come to that." Yeah, I bet they would. And unless the US Team totally folds up, there are a lot of scenarios that will take them to the next round and only a few that won't. Any combination with a win or draw advances the US and one loss scenario will work as well, but the fate of the US team is in their own hands.....Win or draw against Poland and they move on and I'm dead nuts sure that that either France or Argentina would swap places with that! Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 12 Jun 02 - 02:36 PM Actually 'Spaw, I fancy the USA to beat Poland. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Den Date: 12 Jun 02 - 04:22 PM That had to be the dullest match of the cup so far. Nigeria played there second string team and still played better football than England. The English team had better pull their socks up I'm sure that they will find the Danes much more up for the challenge and if they play the way they did against Sweden and Nigeria then I don't hold out much hope for them. I felt sorry for Argentina they play such attractive attacking football but Sweden were resolute at the back and strong on the counter. I also feel sorry for the S. Africans what a way to go out. Anyway bring on Spain. I will be in Atlanta on Sunday anyone been to the Fado pub. I hope to watch the Ireland game there on tape delay at 2:00 pm. Den |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 12 Jun 02 - 05:28 PM Den: I don't know where you hail from, but the English team were playing an 'early' game, rather than an evening game, in temperatures of about 98 degrees (I can't find the ASCII for the degrees symbol!). The chance to play a defensive match, relying on precision passing to avoid too much running would have been a deliberate choice; Particularly against a team from the Southern Hemisphere who would have been better acclimatised. Comments made by the commentators suggested that the players may need three days to re-hydrate as it is. Nigel. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: beachcomber Date: 12 Jun 02 - 07:01 PM I'm glad that England have qualified too and what a meeting it would be were they both to make it through to the FINAL!! Naw Ireland could'nt go that far not with Nationwide League players waiting as back-up, could they? Some of those, they say, are not Irish either, imagine it. We'll be giving games to NON_IRISHMEN to play for the cause when we have dozens of true-blue (perhaps green) Paddy's just dying to pull on the colours back home (Well one anyway..whose name escapes me right now!) It is easy to see how people who refuse to accept non native born players as Irish have very little experience of or knowledge of emigration and how the children of emigrants are, very often, reared. beach |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 12 Jun 02 - 09:33 PM Alanabit, way back on June 2 you noticed something that has been widely overlooked: "England lost! Well, the scoresheet said 1-1, but the result effectively ends England's chances in the tournament." Why would anyone want to swap places with them? |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 13 Jun 02 - 02:25 PM Fair point Fionn, but events have overtaken me and I have had to change my mind. Still, I guess it's a fair cop! Now let's hope there is not another almighty all Brit cock up at the weekend... And while I'm at it, good luck to the Irish against Spain. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Jun 02 - 02:39 PM And who's waiting next in line for the USA? Mexico... |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: songs2play Date: 15 Jun 02 - 08:24 AM 3 goals for England, and only half time. What a team. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: C-flat Date: 15 Jun 02 - 09:57 AM Bring on Brazil!! |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 15 Jun 02 - 10:54 AM Well, C-flat, I am pleased about the result, but you seem to have forgotten what usually happens when England play Brazil in a World Cup game... |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: C-flat Date: 15 Jun 02 - 11:20 AM I haven't forgotten.....just allowing myself to get a little carried away in the moment! |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Jun 02 - 11:23 AM Well, bring on Belgium, then! I'm sure that the volume of support for Belgium will increase greatly. That Niigata, twinned with 'ull, y'know! |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 15 Jun 02 - 02:44 PM Strangely enough, I don't think that England are playing to their potential yet. The great thing is that they are coming together as a team --- playing three games unchanged has given them a real unity, particularly defensively. Ferdinand and Campbell are beginning to look like the best central defensive partnership around, but they'd be really tested against Brazil. However, the Brazilian defence is notoriously suspect, and the speed of Owen and Heskey will hopefully give them real problems. With Beckham just getting back to his best (he didn't do that much against Denmark, but everything he did was crucial)and Butt and Scholes dominating the midfield, England have a real chance in what may turn out to be a classic goal-fest --- hopefully a case of "we're gonna score one more than you". Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: RolyH Date: 15 Jun 02 - 03:18 PM Another plus point from the world cup (other than the football)is that we have got our national flag back from the fascists. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Jun 02 - 04:44 PM St Georges Flag has more associations with the Church of England than with the right wing nuts, who for the most part have tended anyway to prefer the Union Jack.
Looking at the flood of English flags fluttering everywhere this week I found myself thanking God that it hasn't been Union Jacks everywhere. The St George's Flag is a simple and essentially modest flag. The Union Jack isn't. (Yeah, and I know officially it's "Union Flag" not "Union Jack", but Union Jack is what people call it, and that's the determining factor in such things, in my view.) |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST Date: 17 Jun 02 - 05:02 AM Come on Belgium! |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: C-flat Date: 17 Jun 02 - 11:41 AM I think we can do better than Belgium against Brazil. Their firepower is undeniable and Juninho(who was the finest player I've ever seen in a Middlesbrough shirt) has been outstanding, but they can be un-done defensively and the way England are playing I think we're sure to score at least once. All we've got to do is stop them scoring twice! Simple really. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Jun 02 - 12:27 PM If they can beat Brazil they can beat anyone. If. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 17 Jun 02 - 03:28 PM Can't argue with much of this. The history books say that Brazil will win easily, period. However, England's players can be cocky young sods who don't give a buggers about history. The defence looks better than it has done for years and really England have had some extraordinary luck - which is important. They have nine or ten first choice players available and they have now had a few games together. I agree that they could quite conceivably play better - and there would be no time better than on Friday. However, the hot midday temperatures will favour the experienced Brazilians, who are now clear favourites to lift the trophy. They have the firepower to win games without dominating them. The difference is, so do England this time around. The Brazilians should win, but England are unlikely ever to get a better chance against the world's greatest football nation. |
