Subject: RE: Winds called Mariah From: Roger Himler Date: 24 May 98 - 06:49 AM This one is in the DT (Digital Tradition). Go to the top of this page where it says search. Type in [call the wind]. When you are sure of a phrase, putting it in brackets [ ] will cause the DT to look specifically for that phrase. The DT looked for that phrase, when I typed it in and the song popped right up when I clicked on the search button. As the DT tells you, this song is from the musical Paint Your Wagon, That gives it lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. It was popularized during the folk scare of the 60's and 70's by a duo, Bud and Travis. The Rise Up Singing songbook lists versions by The Country Gentlemen on their "Yesterday and Today, volume 3" (Rebel SLP 1535) and on Kingston Trio's "25 years." It will frequently show up in Broadway song books. Of course, RUS gives you a rough chord structure for the song. One of those "composed" folk songs. It just may seep into the tradition, but not in my lifetime I'm sure. Good luck with the song. Roger in Baltimore |

Subject: Tune Add: THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA From: Joe Offer Date: 25 May 98 - 04:00 AM This is an important song for us here in Sacramento, since it's the best known song from the only musical ever to have been set in Sacramento. Therefore, it gets me really ticked off when people sing it wrong. The first couplet stays down, and it's the second couplet where the tune goes up. So, here's the tune. Maybe we can talk Dick into including it in the database so people might possibly learn to sing it right and give Sacramento the respect it deserves. -Joe Offer- MIDI file: THEYCA~1.MID Timebase: 192 Name: THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the March 10 MIDItext 98 software and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format (not correct - maybe MIDITXT doesn't read sharps): X:1

Subject: RE: Winds called Mariah From: Joe Offer Date: 25 May 98 - 04:22 AM Well, the MIDI turned out OK, but the ABC version got thrown off by the sharps, I guess. Anybody who tries to sing it will get a charley-horse in their vocal cords. Guess we'll have to work on it. By the way, Sacramento has a folk song, too - "Clementine." -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Winds called Mariah From: leprechaun Date: 25 May 98 - 02:54 PM Trivia question - What was the name of the young man in Paint Your Wagon who had a "talent for dissipation like nobody I ever saw?" (Hint - it wasn't Florence Henderson) |
Subject: RE: Winds called Mariah From: Casey Date: 26 May 98 - 10:26 PM Leprechaun, as you well know I know the answer to your trivia question and it is not Sylvester Newel [the answer to a different and and even more difficult Paint Your Wagon trivia question].I've always enjoyed "Rotten Luck Willie [Harve Presnell] singing "They Call The Wind Maria". This great movie also features The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band classic " Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans".With "The Gospel Of No Name City" and "Wand'rin' Star" it is without a doubt the best movie that Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin ever sang in. But we do have the lyrics, eamail us at interlanes@hotmail.com and ask for Debbie or Steven
