Subject: BS: Rick's health Update
From: Rick Fielding
Date: 28 May 03 - 06:18 PM

Whew!

Well, if it's true that what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger, then I should be ready to bench press about five thousand pounds!

It's been an absolutely hell of a year health-wise around here, and I'll try to briefly (typing ain't a lot of fun these day) fill you in. As some of you know I've been fighting kidney cancer which has sort of bounced around since my kidney-removal operation last year. I'm currently on chemo-therapy and have had a "Porta-Cath" installed. It's like having a 'fire hydrant' implanted in yourself, when there's a fire....they just hook up the hose! I wear a belly pack with a computer-chemo-pump, and they just plug it into the 'porta cath'.

That's just the beginning!

So far this year, I've been:

irrigated four times (don't ask)

Probed up both wazoos by those dreaded steel rods with cameras!!

Endured successful bladder cancer surgery.

Three bone scans

Four MRIs

Four Ultra sounds

Two re-hydrations

****************************************************************

I'm pretty much of a loner when it comes to dealing with sickness (I absolutely HATE talking about ailments) so lots of good friends have had to deal with a minimum of information, and for that I apologize, but we all have our ways of coping. Some pray, some employ alternative healing techniques, and others go back to age-old remedies. I deal with a kind of "know yer body" approach, combined with LOTS of laughter and jokes (too many for some!!) and I'll probably get through this although it is no sure-thing, believe me. Whatever happens, I'm dealing with it as best I can. I may not be on Mudcat as much as before but I'll probably still give a look in every couple of days until this chemo is over (September)....hopefully then I'll get back to my favourite hobby on a regular basis.

Cheers and thanks

Rick

Rick...I sympathise with not liking to talk about ailments--I hate it too. But you are dealing so valiantly, and I'm sure triumphantly, with such a heavy load, I'm glad you let us in on how it is and has been for you. You will be in my thoughts daily, and especially when I'm in dispair over worsening macular and hip joint degeneration. Seems very minor compared to what you are dealing with. Keep laughing...it is good medicine.

I hope you know that my thoughts are with you Rick, as you deal with all of this, and also with Heather.

I was thinking about you a LOT this past week. I've been hanging out with a bunch of fine musicians and songwriters at the Kerrville Folk Festival, some of whom you know. JtS and I were sitting around the campfire at the Crow's Nest jam a couple of nights ago with Trevor Mills and Aengus Finnan (and several other very talented and funny people). I kept thinking about you and wishing you and Heather had been sitting there with us.

Rick I feel the need to add a few comments to your post. In case your mind is caved totally as well, my comments are the ones in italics.

Well, if it's true that what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger, then I should be ready to bench press about five thousand pounds! Uh, yeah, well, don't count on it. In case your estimate is a bit off you could wind up with a double hernia on top of everything else

It's been an absolutely hell of a year health-wise around here, and I'll try to briefly (typing ain't a lot of fun these day) fill you in. Wonderful! Now I can quit lying to people who write and ask me about you! Also it generally takes about 4 or 5 of us comparing notes to figure out what is really going on anyway and this is an icredible pain in the ass.....as you are Rick....As some of you know I've been fighting kidney cancer which has sort of bounced around since my kidney-removal operation last year. This is the first time I recall hearing cancer compared to Flubber I'm currently on chemo-therapy and have had a "Porta-Cath" installed. Since Cletus, Paw, and the Reg Boys are in the porta-pottie business, Clete wanted me to ask if there was a way they might get in on this porta-cath business as well.... It's like having a 'fire hydrant' implanted in yourself, Did they also implant a Hook and Ladder truck? when there's a fire....they just hook up the hose! I wear a belly pack with a computer-chemo-pump, and they just plug it into the 'porta cath'. Now I have this mental image of a bunch of minaturized Dave Swans running around your innards squirting at balls of Flubber, a kind of conglomeration of "Backdraft" meets "Fantastic Voyage" with Pam Swan in the Raquel Welch part.

That's just the beginning!

So far this year, I've been:

irrigated four times (don't ask) I won't except to inquire whether you planted corn or soybeans.

Probed up both wazoos by those dreaded steel rods with cameras!! But aren't you happy that technology has kept pace? Otherwise it would be a Brownie Hawkeye on the end of wrought iron railing.

Endured successful bladder cancer surgery. Have you noticed that the surgery is the easiest part of these things?

Three bone scans I have only ONE bone I want scanned, Frankly this ain't nothin' but a good pickup line...."Hey Nurse.....Could you scan my bone for me?"

Four MRIs Manly Ruminant Insertions? Listen Rick, there ain't nothin' manly about shagging sheep regardless of what Kendall says. The Llahma ain't too manly either........

Four Ultra sounds Geeziz Keyriced!!!....You had to sit through four Ted Nugent concerts as well? Well hell, I dunno'......I suppose you needed something to do while shaggin' the sheep.

Two re-hydrations Actually I'm surprised it wasn't four what with the Nugent concerts and nailing the sheep and all.....

****************************************************************

I'm pretty much of a loner when it comes to dealing with sickness yeah, but how are you with perversions? (I absolutely HATE talking about ailments) so lots of good friends have had to deal with a minimum of information, No shit? Do ya' think? See the section above about your friends comparing notes....geeziz.....and for that I apologize, but we all have our ways of coping. Next time try a saw Some pray, some employ alternative healing techniques, and others go back to age-old remedies. I deal with a kind of "know yer body" approach and after you learned your body you were completely disgusted weren't you?, combined with LOTS of laughter and jokes (too many for some!! It's not the quantity Rick, it's the quality) and I'll probably get through this although it is no sure-thing, believe me. I should hope not!!! Otherwise our entire betting pool is thrown into a cocked hat and I'm pretty heavily invested..... Whatever happens, I'm dealing with it as best I can. Yeah right...As far as I can tell your treatment seems to consist of tiny El Swannos hosing Flubber while you bang sheep at Ted Nugent concerts. I dunno'.....it may work out for you!! I may not be on Mudcat as much as before but I'll probably still give a look in every couple of days until this chemo is over (September) Okay Rick, here's the deal....If you're feeling great, post ONE dozen times a week; if you're feeling poorly, post TWO dozen times a week; if you're dead, post THREE dozen times a week....hopefully then I'll get back to my favourite hobby on a regular basis.   Say what? Hobby? You're already bangin' the sheep ferchrissakes...

Thanks guys and gals1

And Escamillo....great to hear from you. The rest of the folks are my familiar Mudcat buddies but I don't see your name around much. Hope things are going as well as they can wayyyyy down South.

Hi Jerry....I've got nothing against God, just his wealthy TV Scamsmen and his prominent Political icons who always manage to do the wrong thing. Had Billy Graham marched with King almost half a century ago, instead of feeding info to J. Edgar Hoover, I might have been a Church-goer myself now, rather than a cynic, ha ha!

*******************************************************************

Another reason for keeping mum on quite a few details was simply the business I'm in. Word spreads fast to agents and you don't want them to think you're unreliable.
BUTTTT... the fact is...I've had to cancel a whole British tour (Put together in many ways by Roy Harris, Bill Sables, and harvey Andrews, as well as Heather) and numerous American gigs. I simply have had to be near Toronto for my treatments. If I get through this, boy, am I gonna have one gala tour!

*********************************************************************

I've figured out that thanks to the Canadian Health system I've recieved well over 250 thousand bucks worth of treatment including specialists, medicines, and big expensive machines. As anyone here knows, it's far from perfect (there can be long waits) and it may be on it's last legs as we're forced into an American economy. By the way, if I lived in the States, it would have been game over very early. Income-wise, we'd be close to the bottom of the barrel, and once the house was sold to pay for the initial kidney operation, we'd be completely up shit creek.

******************************************************************

Anyway, I'm in no pain, I'll find out at the end of August whether the chemo has actually done any good, and in the mean time, I've been lucky enough to be around for another great summer sittin' out back in the garden (which Heather is busy workin' on....should be in great shape in another two weeks) playin' banjo, and sayin' 'hello' to whoever drops by that day. It could be worse!

Mudcatter support means a lot.

Cheers

Rick

Fuck you Gargoyle!!!! You're such a shit....but I never would have believed you'd also be such a traitorous shit as well!!!

Damn it Greg, for the past FOUR YEARS you have been wishing me happiness in my imminent demise. And now, after all this time you toss me aside like an old shoe in favor of Rick! I can't believe it!!! All those postings in which you sent your most fervent hopes for me to soon be planted and now you go for Rick instead!!

I ask you, outside of great talent, what's he got that I ain't got? Do you give up so easily or what? With this traitorous act you are shedding any semblance of credibility you have established. If you crap out so readily looking for greener pastures than I suggest you go piss up a slack rope!!!! I suppose I can get used to your new policy of sharing but it won't be easy!!!

On the other hand, I can't help but notice that after your best efforts I am still alive after four years and this bodes well for Rick! I figure he has at least a minimum of four years and now with your new "Sharing the Death Wish" policy, probably a lot longer since you will be even less effective. I mean seriously Garg, you've become almost a talisman or a healing elixir of bad wishes.

Okay Rick, I'll share.....No telling how long we can each extend things as long as Greg keeps up his negative thoughts!

GREAT GOOGLY-MOOGLY!!!! Rick really needs those venomous thoughts!!! Don't you see how well they've worked for me? How can Rick and I expect longevity without Greg's vitriol?

Ah, fuck it, you can share and I'll even offer to clean up the litter all by myself! Anything to keep the two of you around for a LONG TIME. Which brings me to that old Scottish blessing, lang may yer lum reek...which I reckon Heather being a Glasgow gel probably has heard a time or two, but I am thinking of it in a whole new light, what with all you fellers talking about your willies and all. So...to you and Rick, in the tradition of those old double-entendre blues, Lang may your lums reek! if ya get my drift.**bg**

Rickdarlin'...I hope you haven't split a gut getting this lot going in rare form, again! The sanctum has been fired up each and every night for the past almost year and I know those thanksgivings are not for naught, so look ahead and make your plans. You and Heather are in our thoughts and hearts, always and we look forward to getting together with you when we're both doing better!

Spaw...you said "Great Googally Moogally" (except you spelled it wrong). That means you must be reading Liberty Meadows, my new most favourite comic of all time! Awright! Rick, for a lot of really great laughs, get yourself a few copies of the comic "Liberty Meadows". The antics of Ralph (the miniature circus bear) and Leslie (the hypochondriac bullfrog) are enough in themselves to justify the expenditure. And then there's Brandy...Brandy is unforgettable. You can find it on the Net at Libertymeadows.com and peruse it for free too.

Don't think that this will excuse you from the annual partners meeting of LFPS, Layabouts for Hire. You've been the year's top producer and there is the matter of a bonus to be disbursed.

Don't forget to eat cornbread if the chemo won't let you eat much else. Also, if you get bored, start more provocative Mudcat threads...or recycle some old classics for the newbies. I remember several that got me through some tough days. Maybe we can all do the same for you if this chemo regime gets tedious.

You know you best, so keep on doing what you're doing.

And I know you won't be offended...but like my dear friend J. said when she started chemo last fall, "Hell, just thinking about me is lame, I want prayers!" Ya got 'em , friend.

Was thinking of you today.... I had a full set of tips put on yesterday ( mandatory buisness black tie) and spent today filing down my left hand and trying to figure if I could keep any of it and still play. In fact, I came on to pull up the old threads on fake nails... Oh, and then there was the time last night when a "distinguished gentleman of color" wanted to know how I had learnt so much about roots music... "Well, you know that weekend of folkmusic I go to every year... There's a few folkies, -white boys, actually keepin' the music alive and teaching anyone who will listen... now let me tell you where to start lookin'.."    Thanks Rick.

Then I read this.... Blessings and Light for both of you...

One of the more irritating little things is that while I'm on the chemo I HAVE to drink 8 glasses of water a day. I have not been a good boy about this, starting to gag by about the fifth one. Seem to have solved the problem today.....it's Welch's grape juice and a third water.....much more palatable, and surprise surprise, I had twice the amount of energy today than I've had in the last month. Hope it keeps up.

Rick,

When your bag gets sort of full, just take a permanent marker and draw a smiley face on it. The yellow liquid behind the smile is certain to intrigue and fascinate children and adults of all ages----especially if the bag is one of those round ones. I did this in St. Mary's Hospital at Mayo Clinic and gained a certain fame around there.

If the amount of sugar you're consuming by drinking that much juice is a concern (and I have no idea if it is or not, I'm just saying IF), another thing you could try is making dilute ice tea (herbal or decaf). I use one teabag for a 2L bottle of water and find that this subtle flavouring makes it easier for me to drink lots of water.

I'm late in offering my best wishes, though Jennifer did it earlier, but it occurs to me that I'm supposed to get you to make me a guitar strap, for last Christmas, I think it was to have been, so don't go getting too weak to make a nice tooled strap for my fancy guitar!

Seriously, when you get to where you could start on same, let me know, and we'll discuss details (like what to put on it, how long is should be, price, etc.). My email is songuitar@starpower.net, 'cause I can have Mudcat messages waiting months before I ever notice they're there.

Richard, Hello.

My 2 records for FOLK LEGACY are available as CDs now. You can get them from them at www.folklegacy.com   "The Hobos Last Ride" is on one titled THAT'S THE TICKET.

My latest CD---1998---is available from WATERBUG RECORDS at www.waterbug.com

The 2 LPs I did in the 70s for Kicking Mule are now owned by Fantasy Records and they won't be issuing them until I croak.

A cassette called ON THE RIVER is available from Folk Legacy too.

And one of these days, well, who knows ?

Thanks,

Art Thieme

Hey, about Apple's iTunes thing? CD Baby is trying to get a deal with them for featuring independent artists from CD Baby in iTunes. Not sure what the details are yet, but this could be a good thing for folk and independent artists.

Rick, I don't wish to conduct business on your health thread, so here's a joke I didn't steal from Kendall or Amos.

Murphy's about to go to Spain on vacation, and he's worried because he doesn't speak the language. So he's in the pub telling O'Brien: "Look, I'm going on vacation to Spain next week, and I don't know how I'll communicate. I don't speak the language."
O'Brien says: "It's easy. When you get to Spain, just....speak....slowly. They'll understand everything."
SO Murphy flies to Spain, checks into his hotel, puts his luggage in his room, and then he goes down into the lounge bar.
A waiter comes over to his table, and Murphy says, "I'd....like....a....beer....please."
The waiter goes and gets it.
Murphy says, "Thank....you."
The waiter says, "You're ....welcome. Where ....are ....you ....from?"
Murphy says, "I'm ....from ....Ireland."
The waiter says, "Really? .....I'm ....from ....Ireland ....too."
Murphy says, "Then ......why ......are .....we .....speaking ....Spanish?"

Keep at it, Rick.

Seamus

Rick- George, Jon and I send love and wishes for the best- we're just home from a month away, so I found this thread a sad surprise, but we're all impressed with your endurance and your bright spirit.

A bit of positive news: George's brother-in-law finished his chemo a couple of months ago and is now "good as new," out playing golf, hiking and biking- and he's approaching 80. You'll do even better, so keep laughing (who was the famous editor who actually DID cure himself with laughter? He wrote a fine article-or book?- about it, but my aging memory won't give me his name- just now!) Some other Mudcatter will know, I'm sure.

Love and blessings,   Jean

By the way, I just got home from the Doctors clinic where they had the audacity to stick a needle into my right hip socket and shoot it full of some horrible medice. Right now, I hurt worse than I did this morning. I thought about it, and realized that I probably brought the pain on myself ... I remember trying to hit the Doctor at one very painful moment, and then I went for the nurse! And then there was the Police, and all those damned papers to sign (jail food is lousy), but now I'm home again ... looking for a new Doctor! ((I hope I gave you a chuckle)).

Well, I'd like to say that all the interferon and chemo have gotten together and kicked out the nasty cancer cells, but they haven't. Leaving me with a very much "live for today" attitude, 'cuz there may not be a tomorrow. It's a bit scary, but as I've said many times here, the best method for me to deal with adversity is humour and dignity.

I'm not in any pain or discomfort, and I have to admit that the thought of NOT having to deal with the side-effects of chemo-therapy is quite a relief...no matter WHAT the future holds.

I'll try to keep up my Mudcatting as long as I can, 'cuz it's still the best "R and R' I know of. I'll keep ya posted on further developments.

Cheers

Rick.

Last night I lit some candles for you and me and a few others, lavender. Unfortunately, I burned them in pretty little pierced votive holders. Cheap-assed candles didn't burn evenly and the wax poured over the sides and through the holes. Wax all over everything on the shelves underneath and the floor. Burned myself with hot wax when I picked up the holders. Purple stains on a new blouse. The end result? I created stress, agida, and purple globs. Sorry - it was meant to comfort.
Tonight I will just pray.

Amos, it's interesting that you should list 'showers of golden vibrations'. I experienced that for a few days myself back in 1988- I believe it was prayer and nurturing thoughts made visible. Rick, whether you see the golden particles or not, be assured they are there. Freely we give you of our strength to enhance your own.

By the by, Amos, maybe you could list 'oosik' too. I don't know how many are lurking about Toronto but most every Alaskan household has one; talk about strength and inspiration. One look at one of those things and Rick should perk right up. :)

So Sid and Gladys are sitting in the sunroom at the nursing home, and Gladys says to Sid: "I bet I can guess your age."
Sid says, "What?" (He's a bit hard of hearing, is Sid.)
Gladys says, "I CAN GUESS YOUR AGE. Been reading about it in a book. I'll bet you fifty dollars I can guess your age."
"Fifty dollars? OK, you're on, go ahead."
Gladys says, "All right, first you have to stand up."
Sid says, "What kind of pup?"
Gladys shouts, "STAND UP!" So he does. "Now, turn around."
"What?"
"You heard me. Turn around...OK...now, drop your pants."
"WHAT???" Sid asks, hoping he heard wrong.
"I said drop your pants. Hey, 50 bucks isn't chopped liver. I have to do this right."
"You've gotta be kidding."
"No, it's in the book. Go ahead and drop 'em."
Sid grumbles, but obliges. "Now turn around again."
More grumbling.
"Good. Now drop your shorts."
"Who's Dr. Schwartz?"
"No, no," says Gladys, loudly. "I said, drop your shorts!"
Sid stares at her, horrified.
"I AM NOT GOING TO DROP MY SHORTS IN PUBLIC!!!"
"Come on, Sid," Gladys wheedles, "if I'm wrong it's fifty bucks for you. Just humor me."
"Oh, all right," he says, turning even pinker than usual.
"There, that's fine...now, turn around again...go, on, just do it."
"OK, are you satisfied?"
"Great. Let me see...you're...uh...you're...eighty-seven."
Sid is amazed. "That's exactly right! How did you know?"
Gladys looks at him over her trifocals, and smiles sweetly.
"You told me yesterday."

Lots of healing energy here in the islands, Rick, and it's being channeled your way.

Aloha,
Mark

Geeziz man, tou gotta' get your act together. You've already caused a giant mess at Sinsull's place and now Kendall is talking about dog fighting or something. I didn't know he was into dog fighting....I mean that's really disgusting and cruel to say the very least. Besides, that little quote he used is actually about cock fighting I think.....It's not the size of the cock in the fight, but the size of the fight in the cock. .....I dunno'....Maybe it's about sex........whatever...........

[Spaw's mind runs off in tangenital directions......Cocks, Dicks, Dorks, Peters....Hey....Peter T........Old thread......]
So look here Bro, you gotta' stick around 'cause Peter T. still needs work on the thumb roll and he'll need help going to see his cronies at the "Old Folkies Retirement Home"...........As I recall you wrote it this way several years ago:

Scene from the play "Golden Gaffers With Guitars" by R.Fielding. From the original first draft by K. Laughing.

Rick:(to Peter T.)
"Well, old timer, whaddya wanna do today?
Peter T.
"Well, I've still got to do some work on that double thumb roll, Rick. You did promise I'd be able to play "Eve of Destruction" before I died - and I'm almost 87, so time's running out. We could go for a visit down the street though. Hold on while I get my walker.
Rick:
"If you'd taken my advice and bought that Furannablaster -28, with the 25 1/2" scale and 2 3/4" width fingerboard, you'd have learned it 31 years ago, but don't worry, there's still time, and I don't wanna put pressure on you. How 'bout we drop in on Catspaw 91?
"They hobble down the street".
Rick:
"Hey Paw, are you up yet? Put your teeth in, we're here for a visit."
Catspaw:(from behind door)
"Fawkin' eh! Damn possum asses! (cough, hack) Get offa my property, or I'll sic my imaginary brothers on ya! Now git!"
Peter T: "Poor ol fart, hasn't had a good night's sleep since '98. Hey, let's visit old Mick."
"they knock on Mick's door"
Rapidly Shrinking Mick:
"Faith and Begorrah! Is that you Ulstermen at my door? I'll mop the floor with yez, I'll hit yez on the head with my box of Wolftones records! Jayzus, you've got my blood boilin' now...Arghhhhh!"
Rick:
"Oops, now we've done it! He's had another coronary. I think that's number 23. We better ring old Father Offer to give him the last rites again. I think he's still sitting in that abandoned 56 Chevy, down by the lighthouse looking for Russian subs."
Peter T:,
"This is getting depressing. I was at AnnaP's gathering last week, and all she served was mush. After dinner, everyone fell asleep while Sandy was singing "Tam Lin", and he'd only gotten to the 82nd verse! Even 'ol Max was startin' all his blues songs off with "Woke up this Afternoon..."
Rick:
"I know, let's go see 'ol Aunt Katlaughing. She's always got a positive outlook on life!"
They knock on a gaily painted door festooned with astrological signs and uplifting "thoughts for the day"
Katlaughing:
"C'mon in boys, there's a big pot of Camomile, Exlax, and Viagara tea waitin' for you! Find a place to set a spell. You'll have to move a few of the cats first. Saffo just had kittens, so that makes 265 of the little cuties now!"

Whoops..play ends abruptly as Duckboots yells: "Richard put that garbage out!!"

BTW, the Reg Boys are in jail in Montgomery, Alabama.....don't ask.

Spaw

Subject: LYR ADD: Ode to an oosik (a poem) by anon
From: katlaughing
Date: 12 Aug 03 - 11:47 AM

And one more thing, I can't believe Spaw missed the set-up from Ebbie about the 'oosik! Myself being naturally curious, I had to go find out what it is...a walrus boner, I kid you not! Read on...

ODE TO AN OOSIK

Strange things have been done in the Midnight Sun,
and the story books are full---
But the strangest tale concerns the male,
   magnificent walrus bull!

I know it's rude, quite common and crude,
   Perhaps it is grossly unkind;
But with first glance at least, this bewhiskered beast,
is as ugly in front as behind.

Look once again, take a second look -- then
you'll see he's not ugly or vile --
There's a hint of a grin, in that blubbery chin --
and the eyes have a shy secret smile.

How can this be, this clandestine glee
that exudes from the walrus like music?
He knows, there inside, beneath blubber and hide
lies a splendid contrivance -- the Oosik!

"Oosik" you say -- and quite well you may,
    I'll explain if you keep it between us;
In the simplest truth, though rather uncouth
"Oosik" is, in fact, his penis!

Now the size alone of this walrus bone,
would indeed arouse envious thinking --
It is also a fact, documented and backed,
There is never a softening or shrinking!

This, then, is why the smile is so sly,
   the walrus is rightfully proud.
Though the climate is frigid, the walrus is rigid,
Pray, why, is not man so endowed?

Added to this, is a smile you might miss ---
Though the bull is entitled to bow --
The one to out-smile our bull by a mile
    is the satisfied walrus cow!

Rick, I watched this thread in shock and horror without any clue how I can make any meaningful response. We've never met but through your music, your radio shows, your thoughtful comments here and the generally high regard in which you are held by everyone causes me to imagine that I actually know you in some way. This is puzzling to me because I rarely feel any association with people I haven't at least had a few beers with.

Still, I feel moved to find some way to offer encouragement and support however meaningless that probably seems. You don't owe this old world anything but we'd all be mighty pleased if you would just get well and keep on making music for another 40 years or so anyway.

Do the best you can and we'll be pullin' for ya.

Rick, these three corpses turn up at the morgue and each one has a smile on its face. The cops suspect some sort of weird serial killer at large, and they ask the coroner to investigate. "Come back in a couple of days." he says.
A detective comes in 2 days later and says, "What's the story, Doc?"
"No foul play," he says, "just an Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman."
"Sounds like a joke to me." says the detective.
The coroner continues. "Over here we have the Englishman, 70 year old Lord Bottomly-Smythe. Had a heart attack in the arms of his 20 year old mistress and died. Hence, the smile on his face.
Next we have the Scotsman, Jock McTavish. 45 years of age, he won 5 million on the lottery, spent it all on the finest single-malt Scotch whisky and died trying to drink it all. Hence, the smile on his face.
Last, we have the Irishman, Paddy Murphy, 25 years of age. Hit by lightning."
"Why does he have a smile on his face?" asks the detective.
"He thought he was having his picture taken!"

Go on Rick, laugh. You know you shouldn't, but go on, laugh!
My best to you and Heather.

Seamus

Rick,

Awright.....awright......I will not hit the 6th string when playing a three finger C, and I will play the four finger C more often. And I will try to "make it" a little harder.

I think my Larrivee has a setup problem. Broke four....count 'em.....four strings in a feckin' hur and a half set. Now I admit it was a kickass, plenty of reels and jigs, kind of a set. But four strings??????? Has any feckin' body ever broke four strings?

Oh.....yeah, I hope you feel better soon. Talk to you this week

Oh yeah and here's a story about my dumbass brother!!

My brother was down in Lakeland hunting parts in a junkyard with one of his friends...way back in the back they found this sinkhole. It was really deep and dark.

My dumbass brother and his friend started throwing junk into it! First they threw in a carburetor from a 57 Chevy. They peaked over the side and didn't even hear a splash! Then they threw in an old Edsel radiator! Still no splash!

Finally, they found this great big old Suburban engine block and they both picked it up and heaved it over the side of the sinkhole!
Both of those idiots stood on the side of the sinkhole peaking over to hear the splash!

Suddenly a great big old billy goat that was in the junkyard appeared out of nowhere and with his nostrils flaring and his head down he came charging toward them! They jumped away from the sinkhole at the very last minute and the billygoat went right into the sinkhole!! Too bad!

Anyway, they both began to feel read bad and they went and found the owner of the sinkhole and told him about the billy goat charging them and jumping out of the way at the last minute and the sad demise of the old billygoat!

The owner said to them, "Oh that couldn't have been my billygoat. My billygoat was tethered to an old Suburban engine block!"

Two weeks ago I went to see the "40-90 Ballet", a group of 50 ladies in their 40s, 50s and beyond. Beautiful, enthusiastic, transmitting joy and humour, some of them are cancer survivors. I talked to their director, a 79 year old lady, famous choreographer, and told her that I would like to sing something in their show. First signal of life I am showing in one year. She liked the idea, heard something and immediately accepted.

So, I'll be singing again, if my voice does not break very often. Will sing for all of them, for my newborn grandson, for my beloved Graciela, for you Rick and your wife. Somehow I'll be with you.

I just appreciate that he is here posting when he feels like it, however often or seldom that is. I know he loves jokes-- how about posting some new ones here, for him to find when he gets back online?

***Note*** You may substitute Alabama, Texas or any other state, or country.

A Kentucky man and his new bride were on their honeymoon. The husband jumps into bed to wait for his wife to get herself ready.

The wife comes out of the bathroom in a sexy negligee and says "Honey, I gotta ask you sumthin'. Be gentle with me 'cause I'm a virgin."

The man grabs his clothes and rushes out of the house yelling at the top of his lungs. He heads straight to his fathers house.

When he gets there, his father says, "Son, what in tarnation're you doin' here, dang it? You're supposed ta be on your honeymoon with your new gal!"

The son says, "Pa, she told me a big secret of hers. She's a virgin, durn it!"

"Damn, son. You did the right thing by leaving. If she ain't good enough for her own family, she sure as hell ain't good enough for ours!"

I'm told the State Legislature in South Dakota passed a new law requiring that all vehicles sold in the state have their headlight dimmer switch down on the floorboard under the driver's left foot where they always used to be. It turned out there were too many accidents caused by South Dakota drivers getting their left feet caught in the steering wheel.

Here's one about a dachsund (but I think it should be a Yorkie).

A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet dachshund along for company.

One day, the dachshund starts chasing butterflies and before long discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch. The dachshund thinks, "OK, I'm in deep trouble now!

Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.

Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dachshund exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees.

"Whew," says the leopard. "That was close. That dachshund nearly had me."

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the dachshund saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up.The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine."

Now the dachshund sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks, "What am I going to do now?" But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet...and just when they get close enough to hear, the dachshund says............

"Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard."

~Love ya Rick.

Dachshunds are the greatest, funniest dogs of all time. And they are terrific worriers too, always expecting to meet something like a hungry leopard.

A Real Woman's Chuckle

Here is a joke I consider a true female joke. I offer it to you in the hopes that women will love it; and men will pass it along to a woman who will love it.

A woman was sitting at a bar enjoying an after work cocktail, probably a martini, with her girlfriends, when an exceptionally tall, handsome, extremely sexy middle-aged man entered. He was so striking that the woman could not take her eyes off him.

The young-at-heart man noticed her overly attentive stare, and walked directly toward her. (As all men will.) Before she could offer her apologies for so rudely staring, he leaned over and whispered to her, "I'll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for $20.00......on one
condition."

(There are always conditions)

Flabbergasted, the woman asked what the condition was.

The man replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words." (Controlling huh?) The woman considered his proposition for a moment, and then slowly removed a $20 bill from her purse, which she pressed into the man's hand along with her address.

She looked deeply into his eyes, and slowly and meaningfully said....

"Clean my house."

Ummmmmm......thanks for the jokes but in fact I'm probably not as appreciative of them as rumour would have it, so I'll pass if ya don't mind. If you'll notice in EVERY thread on humour that I've ever participated in I always come out favouring the most off-the-wall and mostly misunderstood humour of the lot!! (99% of what I appreciate is British and in Verrrrrry questionable taste. Now a couple of "Round The Horne's" on tape WOULD make me laugh.

Yep, Heather's done a fair amount of the shows lately. Often because of unexpected reactions to medication, making it 'iffy for me to drive.

Cancer is an ugly disease, and sugar-coating it's affects often means lying a bit. I'd rather keep that to a minimum. In a nutshell, I'm taking a medication called CELEBREX, which may help and may not.

A friend and former student dropped by last night, and the toll the disease has taken on my musical skills is very sad.......nuthin' I can do about it though....takes calluses....and I ain't got any more, ha!

I keep up with Mudcat......cuzit's my buddy....as are you good folks, and I wish I could get to the gettaway this year, but I'll be readin' the reports!

Cheers

Rick

Rick ... Reading your recent posting regarding your taste in humor (thank you, by the way) I thought you might enjoy a little Finnish humor! Lappish, actually. The Northern Finns are known for their reticence, as demonstrated in the following classic stories:

Two brothers leave their home for their two week trapline. Four hours up the trail, a rabbit runs across the snow in front of the brothers. The one brothers say,"Look! Kani!" Two weeks later, as they were returning home, they came to same same place where the rabbit had crossed their path. The other brother said, "Yaaaah!"

That night, the one brother cooked their meal. After supper, he asked his brother, "how did your like supper?" The next morning, the brother was gone, but there was a note. It said, "I didn't want to argue!"

Rick and Heather,

Each night of the Getaway, one, some, or many of us will go out and sing our love and caring for you to the moon and tell the moon to beam it on to you. If you can, go out and look, and catch it full in the face and heart. Even if you can't look, feel it all shining down on you.

Matter of fact, anyone who is so inclined can start doing that right away--no need to wait for the Getaway. It is what we have to offer.

Strengh your way,

I was about to make a smart-ass comment about eating, but as my mind wandered through it's quagmire of "Vaguely Related Things I Find Mildly Amusing," it happened upon the "all you need is" syndrome. You know, well meaning folks of course, but always telling you that "All you need is ___________," and you'll feel better right away.

The world seems filled with people who for various reasons seem to believe that the solution to whatever ya' got is ______________(fill in the blank). Some are food freaks of several ilks. From the specific foods ("You need to eat 36 ounces of Brussel Sprouts each day") to the general ("All you need is a good meal"). There are too the exercise nuts with both specific and general suggestions. Then you have the herb folks, the vitamin supplement kooks, the general lifestyle changers, bone crackers, and a whole slew of of others.

On Chris Rock's HBO stand-up he says that since his family had little money and no insurance, the answer for everything medical was Robitussin-----Got a cold? Take some Robitussin. Got a stomach ache? Have some Robitussin. Got a broken leg? Pour some Robitussin on it. Got cancer? Drink lots of Robitussin" This reminded me of a friend's step-Dad who believed the answer to all of your medical ills was a "good physic."

I dunno'....Maybe the guy liked salts, castor oil, and enemas, but you could count on him in any conversation regarding someone's ill health to say, "All that boy needs is a good physic." After awhile I began thinking about this guy and his wife and what their life must be like.............Anyway, it ain't the answer I'm sure as this guy died of stomach and colo-rectal cancer a few years later.

Glad you're eatin' ..... Don't do the the "physic" thing though.......

I considered the tapeworm idea, SINSULL, but I think I'm just naturally skinny. The only time I ever started to get a bit of a tummy was when I drove a taxicab for 6 months, and spent 12 hours a day sitting in the wretched thing, eating junk food on the run. That sedentary a life can cause anyone to get a potbelly. It vanished quite soon after I quit driving cab.

There's another factor too. I have never married. I note that nothing on Earth can put weight on people like marriage does. I think it's psychological.

I say a prayer for you every day Rick. Still can't understand why you went with Heather's suggestion and didn't do an Everly Bros. song at the Getaway. You would think she was something special or something. You owe me one. Don't try to get out of it. The Getaway '04, guitar in hand, and "Bye Bye, Love".

Stay well, my friend.

Hey Rick, I caught a very nice 7 LB Silver salmon yesterday in the Snohomish river, five minutes from my house. "Bride Judy" wanted to have it for supper, but I said "Heck no, let's mail it to Rick!" So this morning I put it in the snail mail post box. If you see a large, and very smelly package arrive sometime next week, perhaps you should not open it! CHEERS, and thinking of you, Bob(deckman)nelson ((you do believe that I mailed you a salmon, don't you?))

Love you, dear one. It's going to be crummy not having you at the Getaway. There's never enough time to hear all your wonderful music. Keep the faith. Keep getting better. Wishing you freedom from pain, freedom from fear, and a deep knowledge of how much you and Heather are loved. And know that Bill and Art and I and everyone else are pulling for you, thinking healing thoughts, wishing you well, missing you.....you name it. Much love to you and to Heather! (You have to get better because you have to meet my three NEW cats! Tossie and Misty have gone to the great Cathouse In The Sky, but my life is now enriched by Marble (calico, 13 lb.,5-yr-old), Buddy (grey & white, 10-lb, 2-year-old), and Zeke (big--14.5 lb.--brown tabby, 1.5-yr-old). Zeke came inside just before the hurricane and has been pronounced free from FIV, feline leukemia, fleas, worms, and all bad habits. You'll love him!

I was at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals this weekend. I often thought of you Rick. I wish you could have been there with us. You are a hero in the traditional music booster department, and there was a huge lack in that department there. Yes I did a banjo showcase - I think we got in by some fluke or something, but it's painfully obvious that traditional music is the farthest thing from artistic directors minds these days. If things keep going that way, authentic trad music will be totally in the history books as far as Ontario festivals are concerned. We owe you a great deal Rick - we'd like (need) you back.
Me and Kathy will be doing a Ragged But Right recording this coming year - can't wait to use your beautifully crafted leather sign again and often! Thinking of you, Arnie

Hey, Rick and Heather - I spent the brief time I was at the Getaway explaining to everyone that I'm a "lapsed 'Catter" (as well as a lapsed Catholic), but I thought I'd better get my tail back on here and send best wishes to you both! Boy, did you miss some excitement, with the British Invasion and Jeri's Stump Speech and Max's Lily and the Madame Defarge Synchronized Knitting Society and other things Too Fierce to Mention. George led the "Occupational Hazards" song swap, and wished you were there to sing Pitman's Blues...

Hang in there with the Celebrex, and keep swilling those chocolate malts - as the song says,

There's only two things I like better than milkshakes and malts
And one's dancin' like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz...

...and as I walked up the hill to the gym at the Getaway, I heard the guitar bit of Pitman Blues and tried to figure out 1) what exactly it was because I had a definite and strong reaction, and 2) where the heck it was coming from. George, on the bench, with a guitar. Rick wasn't there, but it sure sounded like the song made it!

Rick,

Susette and I dashed in for a few hours to the Getaway on Saturday. Many folks asked about you, asked if I was in contact with you. I thought several times of the jamming you and I did together, and the swapping of the Gallagher for your Martin for a few songs.
Rare fine moments of musical connection I won't forget. I had a nice chat with a remarkably slim Mike (Big Mick) and I asked him to send you my best.

I'm sorry as hell you've ailing. Here's hoping for some good days fo you soon.

Got home from Toronto yesterday morning about 1 a.m. I know you all would like an update on how Rick and Heather are doing so here we go. I asked Rick before posting anything and he said it is fine to let his friends know.

First, he is ever so greatful for everyones friendship and thoughts.

I walked up to the door, knocked, and got met with that smile. Has there ever been a smile anywhere as marvelous as our Heather's?

Rick looks good. In fact, I expected worse than I found. He is thin, but looks good. He gets tired easily, but in spite of that we managed to have dinner together at a great little Chinese joint, and the next day we ate lunch at Murphy's Law Irish Pub. Great conversation with good friends is hard to beat.

In terms of prognosis, Rick tells me that it is all up in the air. Since kidney cancer is one of the few that responds to immune therapy sometimes, that is how they are going at it.

In terms of mental state, this man shows once again why he is a wonder. Rick understands exactly where he is at, and as he said in his letter to us at the Getaway, "No regrets". He is in the fight until its resolution. I am proud of him.

Since I didn't ask Heather's permission to post on how she is doing, let me just say that she is one of the strongest, most grace filled women I have ever known. Any of you that know my circle of women friends will know that that is quite a statement. She loves this man, and is devoted to helping him wage the battle.

Now if I could only find a way to get over there every week for lessons.........

DVD player report will be in the Getaway memories thread.

All the best,

Mick

If Mick and Rick have both lost weight, which one of 'em gets to be called Slim?

Bill
could stand to lose some myself...

I did miss the Beef Brothers at the Getaway. Jed was missing. Rick and Mick no longer look like folkies. Even MMario is a shadow of his former self. Alaska Mike helped fill the void. You would like him and Tawmmie, Rick. Big shy guy who needs to be pulled out of his shell. A few Shellbackers filled in too. But we missed you and Heather.
Look at the videos.
Mary

I always thought it was Rick AND the Beef Bros. In any case, Jed needs to send a shirtless shot in to Mudcat so we can call 'em 'the BeefCAKE Brothers'. Maybe you both could pose with those bow ties like the Chippendales use. Is it getting warm in here, or is it just me?

Yeah, Steve. Rick sounded great, Harvey Andrews sounded great, and Heather sounded like like the subject of a blues song. (Maybe/not one of Tinker's, although it sounds like a great CD! Broonzy on guitar, huh?)

"Don't push my buttons, baby, leave them things alone;
Don't push my buttons baby, or we'll have to go on home;
Oh, I won't holler, I won't shout,
But when you push buttons, my 'phones go out;
Don't push them buttons baby, or we'll have to go on home.

All the best Rick, and keep positive.

Dear Rick ~ I get a chuckle when I remember coming to your place one evening, when I first got to know you, and you didn't have a computer yet. You didn't think those little machines were for you. Now look at you - you've got a thread 381 entries long! My oh my.

Hugs,
~b.w.

Bonnie!! Good to see you!

Rick, sorry Ive been away so much and haven't posted in a while. Your cd and the MUdcat cds were the few I brought with me to WY and the new grandson. MY daughter really likes your voice and tunes. The grandson does, too, from what we can tell. He's two weeks old now!

Lots of Love, Energy, and Healing thoughts for your and Heather. I love you,

kat
