From: Alice

In response to Ian's thread on requests for parting songs, here are the lyrics. From listening to the recording of Mary O'Hara of Farewell But Whenever, these are the lyrics I memorized:

FAREWELL BUT WHENEVER YOU WELCOME THE HOUR
lyrics, Thomas Moore

Farewell, but whenever you welcome the hour
That awakens the night-song of mirth in your bower,
Then think of the friend who once welcomed it too,
And forgot his own griefs to be happy with you.
His griefs may return, not a home may remain,
Of the view that had brightened his pathway of pain,
But he ne'er will forget the short vision which threw,
It's enchantment around him, while lingering with you.

And still on that evening when pleasure fills up,
To the highest top sparkle each heart and each cup,
Where 'ere my path lies, be it gloomy or bright,
My soul, happy friends, shall be with you that night.
Shall join in your revels, your sports, and your wiles,
And return to me beaming, all, all with your smiles.
Too, blessed if it tells me that amid the day of cheer,
Some kind voice had murmered, I wish you were here.

Let fate do her worst, there are relics of joy,
Bright dreams of the past, which she cannot destroy,
Which come in the night time of sorrow and care,
And bring back the features that joy used to wear.
Long, long be my heart with such memories filled,
As that vase in which roses had once been distilled.
You may break, you may shatter that vase if you will,
But the scent of the roses will hang around it still.

Mary O'Hara does an exquisite job of this song. My personal favorite farewell song.... I think this may be in Allan C.'s wonderful thrift store discovery of the old Thomas Moore book of music. Are you reading this thread, Allan? Are these words correct?

Yes, we are anxiously awaiting Allan's imprimatur on this song. Allan, are you there?

Joe, Allan posted it to the original thread, and there were a few words that were different. Ian then posted the Moore version from Allan's book in it's own thread (title is all in CAPS).
