Subject: Thomas Moore's lyrics to 'Slane'

I read somewhere that Thomas Moore wrote lyrics to the old tune "Slane", the same tune used in "Lord of Faithfulness" (at least I think that's the title?). I cannot find a copy of Moore's "Old Irish Melodies" and whenever I search on the web although I can find many of his compositions it never tells me which one is set to "Slane"! Does anyone know? I would really appreciate some help.

No such Irish tune known to 1866. Nor are any of Moore's songs in the 10 parts of 'A Selection of Irish Melodies' set to a 'Slainte'.

That last (click-on) 'slane' appears as "With my love on the road" in Joyce's 'Old Irish Folk Music and Songs", #323.

PS, note that it is actually 3/4, not 4/4.

SLANE (the same as Roger's link) is a tune name used in hymnals. Hymns Ancient and Modern (New Standard) (1983) says it is "Irish traditional melody." To this, "Be Thou My Vision" (tr. by Mary Byrne; versified by Eleanor H.Hull) is usually set. For its words and MIDI, click here.

Whether Thomas Moore wrote a poem to this tune or not, I do not know. I have a copy of Irish Melodies, new edition (Longmans, Green, and Comapny, 1873), but cannot find it either. Moore's Irish Melodies sites are here and here.

The tune is also used for The Banks of the Bann (with midi).

Mind, I'm not suggesting that Tom Moore wrote that. I've always assumed that this is where the hymn writers found the tune.

It is.

The Slane tune is the kind that Moore would have liked I think, if he'd ever came across it. It's got that air of cheerful melancholy he seemed to favour, and a stately quality.

When I said "it is" then I was agreeing that the Banks of Banna is not the same tune as the Banks of the Bann.
