Subject: Getaway 2004 From: SINSULL Date: 03 Mar 04 - 07:55 PM Is it too soon? My company has a mandatory sales meeting in late October - I have declined if it interferes with the Getaway. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 04 Mar 04 - 10:07 PM for comforts sake, midchuck, you'd 'probably' have to leave after lunch Sunday...people do it this way. You'll probably get details on the driving from Jeri, Kendall and others who do a similar drive |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 05 Mar 04 - 06:43 AM More like 9, give or take an hour on either sided based on how buggered up NYC traffic is and how many times you stop. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: alanww Date: 05 Mar 04 - 09:22 AM No, not on the Interstate, Kendall, but there are such hazards at the Getaway! So its best to arrive in daylight, it will then be easier to avoid parking your car on a tree stump! "Abroad for pleasure ...!" Alan |

If you put both Pittsford and Darlington in Yahoo Maps it's only a 6 and a half hour drive. NY 87 and then over to 95 it's a pretty straight line and you'd avoid most of the big city snarls.... really there's no excuse... 6 1/2 hours? Possibly. If I had a Ferrari, diplomatic immunity, and a passenger who was an expert pistol shot, carrying a couple of Desert Eagle .44 mags with armor-piercing ammo... Looks like I'd come down the Northway and NY Thruway to 287, and loop around the major NY/NJ metropolitan area to the west, then pick up 95. It looks doable, except that so much of it is in NJ, and it's a given in Vermont that every single last New Jersey driver is crazier than a shithouse rat. And on a friday evening, they're all going to be drunk, too. This will require thought. Peter. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 05 Mar 04 - 11:41 AM An alternate route to consider from Vermont and northern reaches is to cross I-84 to Scranton, and then come down I-81 to Harrisburg, and then I-83 (or other route) down the Susquehanna River. It's longer than the route through NJ, but far less subject to traffic jams. If your road map doesn;t show Darlington, find Havre de Grace, MD (at the mouth of the Susquehanna where it empties into Chesapeake Bay). Now go upriver about 10 miles to the Conowingo Dam. Darlington and Camp Ramblewood are on the left shore, just a mile or so below the dam. --Charlie |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 05 Mar 04 - 12:35 PM Tinker, we judge New Jersey drivers on the basis of the driving of the ones who come here to ski. They all have large, new SUVs. They all appear to think that because they have SUVs they can safely drive in snow as fast as they can on dry pavement in clear weather, and that anyone who disagrees with them ought to damn well get out of the way. Do you ski in Vermont? Peter. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Allan C. Date: 05 Mar 04 - 12:59 PM Midchuck, they are everywhere there is a ski slope. I have dodged my share of them. You forgot to add that they do all of that with straight treads. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Tinker Date: 05 Mar 04 - 01:28 PM Nope, we don't drag the horde that far north to ski. I will have to agree on the winter driving assessment. If it's any consolation they can't drive at home on snow either. Some folks have really slow learning curves. We get snow days for ridiculously light snow fall, simply because the "roads" (read drivers) really are that bad. But there is no snow in October..... Kathy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 05 Mar 04 - 01:29 PM I DO recommend Charlie's route thru Pennsylvania, even if it adds an hour or so...it is a lot easier on the nerves. Midchuck...would you have Friday to drive? This is not easy to do if you are committed to work all day Friday & Monday. (At least it is not 2 hours MORE south or east, like it was a few years ago!) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,MMario Date: 05 Mar 04 - 01:48 PM if you can't get BOTH friday and monday - I would really reccomend trying to get MONDAY off to drive. While Friday evening is fantastic and I wouldn't miss it if at all possible I think Sunday Evening and monday morning is when a lot of the true "magic" of getaway occurs. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: KathWestra Date: 05 Mar 04 - 02:35 PM The Pennsylvania route adds exactly 42 miles to the drive from New England. I've clocked it both ways, because I was curious. However, it adds only about a half hour more driving time--and not because I'm a crazy driver. There are NO TOLLS on the Pa. route, so you're not always standing in line waiting to pay for the privilege of driving again. Through Pa. from Newtown, Connecticut, it's just about 7 hours to my house in Silver Spring--about an hour less to the Getaway. Boston is a 9-hour drive to my house through Pennsylvania (which would make it 8 hours to Darlington). I drive fairly fast (75 in 65mph zone) and have the proverbial camel bladder that requires very few stops along the way. On 95, you have to pay (eastbound only) for whichever NY bridge you cross, for the NJ Turnpike and/or Garden State Parkway, the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the Delaware Turnpike, and the northern Maryland portion of I-95 (northbound only). It all adds up to lots of lines, lots of money, and (at least in my case) lots more stress. Pennsylvania route is over interesting, scenic roads. And did I mention no tolls? Kathy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 05 Mar 04 - 07:32 PM On a road trip from Anchorage, I would have to drive over 3500 miles, traverse three major mountain ranges, cross 2 international borders, and explain six times to several Canadian authorities that, "Even though I'm from Alaska, I do NOT have a hand gun" (then wait each time while they search my car). If I can afford the fare, I will be flying. But I will probably need transportation asistance from whichever airport I happen to find a cheap airplane ticket for. Sure will be great to see you all again. Mike |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 05 Mar 04 - 08:35 PM and, Mike, you would also have a number of "dry counties" to cross. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 05 Mar 04 - 08:36 PM I may try to got the Pennsylvania route this year. I tried it once, going to DC, and it added a LOT of time, but there was road construction. Note to Tinker: people in Vermont think any driver's crazier than a shithouse rat if they get the tractor up over 15 mph. The NJ drivers will probably mostly be New Yorkers anyway. And guys from Vermont, going 30 in the fast lane. Noreen, are you coming this year? I shall be SO happy to see you! Does anyone know if super-glue works on sleeping bags? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Sandy Paton Date: 05 Mar 04 - 08:59 PM The 87 to 287 to 95 dodge, avoiding the Garden State madness, is a pretty good one, Midchuck. I've used it, but I confess I prefer Kathy's route through Pennsylvania, especially now that the chronic construction hang-up around Scranton has been eliminated (or wasn't causing the usual problems when I last drove over that way). Being able to avoid New Jersey altogether makes it a lot easier on the temper, too. Give 'er a go! Sandy (the other one) |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 06 Mar 04 - 01:08 AM Jeri..if you are talking about the fabric parts of sleeping bags, there IS a special fabric glue that is pretty good...you get it at craft stores & such...(little gold plastic bottle) Super Glue is brittle and scratchy when dry... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: mooman Date: 06 Mar 04 - 04:31 AM Mmmm...if I can find a cheap flight to Washington Dulles, Washington-Baltimore or Philadelphia, I might consider trying to make it across the pond with an airline friendly instrument. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 06 Mar 04 - 12:09 PM we haven't run out of kind souls yet... (and Wash-Balt is MUCH closer) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: KT Date: 06 Mar 04 - 04:16 PM Bill, what's the difference in distance between Wash-Balt and Reagan International from the camp? I may need to fly into Reagan. If so, what's the best way to get to Ramblewood from there? Thanks! KT |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 06 Mar 04 - 06:23 PM Reagan is right in DC (well, across the river) Wash-Balt (BWI) is 2 hrs up I-95 and 35 mins. from the camp. To get to Ramblewood from Reagan, it's a matter of following the interstate over to I-95 and heading north! (passing BWI on the way) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 06 Mar 04 - 08:07 PM I will never call it Reagan... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 06 Mar 04 - 09:11 PM Midchuck, you HAVE to get to this one. I also recommend taking Fri and Mon off to do so. I am beginning to think of a Manchester BWI flight down, as southwestern is pretty inexpensive and it's a darn sight quicker, although riding down with Barry was much of the fun last year. Down with Barry, back with Southwestern??? Also, was there some talk of a concert tour with Alaska Mike to make the trip worthwhile? I know that I have done some concert presenting and have had mixed results, but if you want to take a chance on a house concert (great food, a good place to stay and possibly some $$) I might be able to swing it, although I'd be at the extreme end of the tour (so what else is new) I can't speak for Vermont drivers now, but I do wonder at the folks who do the Montpelier-Burlington commute at 70 mph in ice and snow, and wear high heels or dress shoes and look so darned startled when they can't even get out of their stuck SUVs on the interstate because of the ice. Must be flatlanders. I won't miss it. See you in October, and will come into it less crazed with a few more songs in my head. I'll also bring a flannel lined sleeping bag and won't refuse those ear plugs. Susan. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Nancy King Date: 07 Mar 04 - 11:27 AM I'm with you, Kendall! Looking forward to seeing all of you next October! Sandy, any chance you and Caroline can make it this year? Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Noreen Date: 07 Mar 04 - 03:25 PM Why is a shithouse rat particularly crazy? Don't think we have them in England, least I've never seen one. Jeri my dear, I will only be able to get to the Getaway this year if I win the lottery. And since I can't afford lottery tickets at the moment, I will have to enjoy it vicariously. I will relive it all with your help. What will you do for your party piece this year? Another treestumpstunt might be a bit obvious- leave it a few years. I would really love to get there again some day before I get old ...plenty of scope there then :0) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dave Bryant Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:19 AM Linda (Essex Girl) and I keep thinking about a trip across the atlantic during one autumn, and Micca was trying to persuade us that we ought to go to Getaway. The main problem is the fact that Linda has a 15 year old son (no he most definitely wouldn't want to come to anything folkie). Unfortunately the date doesn't look as though it would fit in with his falf-term holiday at the moment, but we might be able to sort something out. Can someone give us any idea of how Getaway's organised and what it costs. We both enjoy impromptu song/music sessions and at most UK festivals are much more likely to be found in the "fringe" pub events (often running them ourselves) rather than the big concerts. How easy is it to get there from the UK ? - Micca reckons that it's easiest to fly to Washington and travel from there. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:38 AM Why is a shithouse rat particularly crazy? Don't think we have them in England, least I've never seen one. It's a line I got many years ago from an old friend who was a native Vermonter, which only a few of us are, and had lines like that he kept coming up with, and I kept stealing. I suppose the underlying theory is that even a rat has a number of options as to where to live, and must be crazy if he chooses a shithouse. Did you hear about the folk guitar player who couldn't make enough money to find a place to live and was afraid he'd freeze during the winter? He finally found an old outhouse he could rent, and he could at least sleep there if he sort of curled up. But as work got harder to find, he couldn't even make the rent on that. But he survived the winter by subletting the basement to a banjo player...but I digress. Peter. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,MMario Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:45 AM the 15 year old might find more to interest him then he would think! At least that is the scuttlebutt I hear regarding the stuff Shadowmonk does with the kids. I would think flying into the Washington/Baltimore airport would be the most convenient - as it it a hop skip and a jump from the camp. Getaway weekendsite has some information - sdearching this forum for "fsgw getaway" will bring up a LOT of information. the weekend itself I beleive runs about $150. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Amos Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:55 AM The reason shithouse rats tend to be crazy is (a) they breath a lot of methane and (b) their sources of protein are...problematical, to say the least. A |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Ferrara Date: 09 Mar 04 - 12:46 AM "Can someone give us any idea of how Getaway's organised and what it costs. We both enjoy impromptu song/music sessions and at most UK festivals are much more likely to be found in the "fringe" pub events (often running them ourselves) rather than the big concerts. " Dave, the Getaway is about participation and mutual enjoyment. It's home grown all the way. We usually have about a dozen special guests but they are still guests like everyone else, maybe leading a workshop or giving a short concert during the day but then joining in as "audience" or "contributor" in other people's workshops and joining in the late night singing. There is a daytime program of four or five tracks of organized workshops and sing-arounds during the day and there is jamming going on much of the time as well. The program consists of workshops, themed sing-arounds and jams (blues, C&W, pub sing, sea songs or whatever) and a few half hour concerts. The only difference between a workshop and a sing-around is that the workshop is intended to showcase attendees with special knowledge in the type of music being featured. The leaders get a chance to do several songs apiece during the hour, besides inviting the audience to participate. For example, last year we had "Mountain Songs and Ballads" and "Irish Unaccompanied Singing" workshops among others. We started the concerts because so many people want a chance to hear, say, Kendall, or Big Mick Lane, or Bob Zentz, or Ed Trickett, etc. Different people are featured each year including, most years, one or two relatively unknown musicians and/or non-professionals. There are sign-up concerts Saturday and Sunday, late-night music after that. Next year we think we'll set aside a cabin near the dining hall for an extra late-night music venue. In my mind three things make the Getaway magical. The first is the sense of community. New people attend every year and they are "old friends" by the end of the weekend. Friendships are deepened every year and the circle keeps growing. The second factor is the emphasis on mutual enjoyment and sharing. Everyone is welcome to lead a song or tune and anyone is welcome to offer to lead a workshop, with the proviso that in the judgment of the program chair (that's me, mostly) it fits the overall balance of the program. The third factor is the flat-out terrific musical quality you find at the Getaway. There are wonderful people, wonderful music, wonderful jams, wonderful late-night sings, wonderful workshops and concerts and special moments. Not everyone is a pro or an accomplished musician or even a musician at all, and not all the music is enjoyable, but the opportunities for wonderful musical experiences are soooooo amazing. There's a variety of tastes and talents and musical surprises, such as Janice Cole's torch rendition of Rubber Ducky that has literally put people on the floor, they were laughing so hard. Or the year when Joel Bailes on piano and Rick Fielding on guitar jammed non-stop for two and a half hours with, as far as I know, absolutely no audience. Just music for the love of it. Well I guess it will surprise you to learn that I love our FSGW Getaway :-D The thing that's so nice is that year after year more people fall in love with it. Rita Ferrara |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: karen k Date: 09 Mar 04 - 12:08 PM Extremely well said Rita. Come once and you'll want to come every year. You have to be there to really understand. I love it. k |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Big Mick Date: 09 Mar 04 - 02:04 PM Yep, Rita has nailed it. If I tried to give a physical description, one might try and figure out why folks want to come so badly. But when one factors in the atmosphere, they find themselves wondering why anyone wouldn't come. This event has given me wonderful friends, almost indescribable experiences, exposure to types of music that I never thought possible, musical experiences that I will one day write about. Mudcat is the virtual coming together of a worldwide community of folk musicians. The Getaway is one of, and the main one, physical manifestations of that virtual experience. I have yet to meet the person who has experienced it that wasn't changed by it. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,MMario Date: 09 Mar 04 - 02:09 PM The Getaway is one of, and the main one, physical manifestations of that virtual experience. and Therefore - I for one wish to thank AGAIN the FSGW for allowing and welcoming 'catters to the Getaway. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 09 Mar 04 - 05:28 PM I attended my first Getaway in October 2003. Arriving that first day I didn't know anyone by sight and only a few names from the Mudcat (I was fairly new to Mudcat then as well). In no time at all I felt welcomed and at ease. The atmosphere of the Getaway is friendly and supportive in every respect. I attended many workshops and even helped to lead a couple of them. There is a great diversity of musical styles among the attendees. Sharing sea songs and shanties with the likes of Barry Finn, Bob Zentz and the Shellback Chorus made the weekend for me. Meeting Kendall Morse and Big Mick Lane and so many others was a real treat. I was thrilled to find so many talented voices in one place and time. My wife and I felt like we had come home to a host of new friends. Besides the concerts and workshops, there is the comraderie of sitting down to eat with new friends and swapping stories and experiences with people from many other locations. I found that I could sing quietly by myself or joyously join a group of 20 or so in a rousing chorus song (The night Theresa and Snuffy lead us all in "Blow the Man Down" will forever remain a highlight of my weekend). I hope we will be able to attend the Getaway again this year, as with others, money is always a consideration. But if not, then certainly we will return some time in the future. I would encourage every mudcatter to try and attend. This Getaway is truly a magical event that will leave an indelible impression on you when its over. Mike |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 09 Mar 04 - 09:10 PM It's a folkie commune for a weekend. You pay one price for lodging and meals, then you go to anything you want or nothing at all. You can sit somewhere and jam or talk, or go to the scheduled events.. Rita, I was at that blues gym jam. Rick goaded me into playing, even though I didn't know what the heck I was doing. That's been his strategy with me all along though - get Jeri out of 'safe' mode. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Ferrara Date: 09 Mar 04 - 09:32 PM Ah, Jeri, lucky woman. Ever since Joel described it to me I've wished I had been there too for at least part of it, even though it's awfully hard to participate in a blues jam with a zither :-) And, good for Rick. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Allan C. Date: 09 Mar 04 - 10:01 PM The problem in a nutshell is that there will always be a session or mini concert or workshop you will miss because you chose to attend something else. And yet, when you compare notes with others, you'll find that they are wishing they could have done what you did. More often than not, I have found myself in the predicament of the mule with the two bales of hay. But rather than starve, eventually I forced myself to make a choice. Also, as Mike pointed out, some of the best parts of the Getaway happen outside of the events printed on the schedules. Aye, there be magic there! |

It still makes me laugh out loud. Anyone remember being led by the Pied Piper out the door at about 3AM to the strains of "Irene Goodnight" which spontaneously grew by about thirty new verses? I missed Mick singing a lullaby to try to get the single women's room to quiet down and sleep. And so on... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,MMario Date: 19 Mar 04 - 10:31 AM I didn't get led out the door by the piper as I only had to stumble to the adjoining room - but do remember the two hour rendition of "Irene Goodnight" |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 19 Mar 04 - 12:47 PM Morty, I'll sleep in my car! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Big Mick Date: 19 Mar 04 - 02:11 PM Morty, there is plenty of room. I can't wait to see you again, and meet the formidable pixie of doom. Got to run. Got a gig. Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 19 Mar 04 - 02:30 PM It occurs to me that in my school district, this could count as a fine professional development opportunity! How soon would one be able to find out about workshops being offered? If I can find one that would justify the travel, I might be able to convince the powers that be to let me go! They let one colleague go to Minneapolis for a Kodaly conference, after all! So what might be offered that would professionally benefit an elementary music teacher with a ukulele band, a "multicultural curriculum", a children's chorus, and a personal affinity for anglo concertina, harmony singing, and good times? Besides seeing all you wonderful folks, including Morty too! Allison |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Allan C. Date: 19 Mar 04 - 04:13 PM Animaterra, you could explain that not only are there numerous workshops on ballads and harmony, but also there is a very important one on teaching songs to young children. Of course, you may need to "forget" to mention that you, yourself, are leading that workshop! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Tinker Date: 19 Mar 04 - 04:51 PM Morti, if you end up in Newark again you can finish the trip with me, of course that means you and Pixie have to be willing to brave "The Horde". I'll even supply really warm sleeping gear if you can just get your butts to this side of the Atlantic... PUHLEEZE!!! Animaterra, Of course you can talk your way to Getaway...Jusst look at it this way..... Now although some things change from year to year we can probably assure certain catogories will be available. ( If not we'll pull together a special Mudcat sing and be sure you're covered) Multicultural and I assume intergrated curriculum.... By definition all labor songs, work songs, sea songs and war songs fit somewhere. Okay If Mick and Barry Finn show up I figure we've covered that even if Rita didn't get one of the above on this years schedule. Children's Choir, Joe Offer does a mean children's campfire and I know a few camp songs, in fact Susan of DT and I have talked about getting together to swap Girl Scout songs at some point...Persoanl access to the founders of the DT. How much more validation could they want??? Come on girl.... it's not even much of a stretch......But it is alot of fun.... If we giggle enough maybe the guys will treat us to another lullabye.... tinker |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 19 Mar 04 - 04:51 PM I can lead a workshop as long as I'm not getting paid for it on school time! Great idea, Allan! Allison |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 19 Mar 04 - 05:30 PM Time to get creative lady! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 19 Mar 04 - 06:23 PM Paid? Get even remotely close to a suggestion of a workshop, and watch out for Ferarra! "Music in the Classroom" would be good. You get to mention your school name a bazillion times, make contacts from all over and possibly bring some home with you. Are there other teachers who might be interested? What would be REALLY cool: if there were kids who knew a lot of songs and could co-lead a workshop. "Songs From the Back of the Bus." Of course, these might not be the sort of songs Allison wants to bring home. The other problem is that kids may want to keep the songs to themselves |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Nancy King Date: 19 Mar 04 - 06:58 PM Allison, the program really can't be finalized until quite close to the event, because we don't know exactly who will be there. Having said that, a list of possible/likely topics can be started at any point, and probably already has been. I'm willing to bet that any reasonable topic can be accommodated. Harmony singing is inevitable, whether in an organized workshop (which does often happen) or not. Some variation of music-with-children sounds like a fine idea. We have several ukulele players in the Getaway crowd, as well as a number of squeezebox players, so either of those instruments could get some attention. Even if they don't get their own workshops, there's lots of opportunity to connect with likeminded folks. Think of the Getaway as a networking opportunity! As for the good times, you can count on those! I hope you can make it! And Morty, looking forward to seeing you again! Jeez, it's not even April and I can hardly wait for the Getaway! Cheers, Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Annie Date: 19 Mar 04 - 11:08 PM To anyone flush with enough cash to fly an extra leg on USAirways Express to Salisbury, MD I'll take ya from there. Sleeping bag and loaner guitar comes with the deal. It's about 3 hours up and back from here and dam convenient to fly in and out of our very small but full service airport. By the time you think about traffic at BWI or Raygun, you could be down to Smallsbury and on the tarmac. Sold? Keep it in mind and PM me. Quick trip to the beach thrown in at no xtra charge. Annie |

And Morty, m'love, git that wee girl packed up and get here. I can bring extra sleeping bags, no sweat. You know I would absolutely love to see you again. Damn, Nancy, I know just what you mean. I shouldn't even be thinking about the Getaway in March, but I am bubbly with anticipation. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 20 Mar 04 - 08:36 AM Well, gol danged... This thing looks like fun. Any other blues players comin'? Bobert |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Allan C. Date: 20 Mar 04 - 08:58 AM Well, for starters, Bobert, Max is one hell of a blues player and is almost guarateed to be there. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 20 Mar 04 - 09:17 AM Bobert, there have always been bluesy people there. There was a blues jam 'workshop' last year. Kendall's a yankee: a Maine Yankee. He's just thinking about getting excited. They think about things for a long time in Maine, probably because they're a bit groggy after a long winter's hibernation - until the following November or so, when they have to gather nuts and berries to get them through the next one. He'll get back to us sometime by next November, when we might hear an emotional outburst such as "I had a pretty good time." If he were 20, it would be "Well, it didn't suck." |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: MMario Date: 20 Mar 04 - 10:19 AM yes - for a mainer Kendall is getting quite flighty - but then again he has spent a lot of time out in the world with wild and crazy folkies. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Tinker Date: 20 Mar 04 - 10:24 AM Bobert, Roger in Baltimore led last year's Blues workshop which was hands down the best ever.... Gutbucketeer provided Bass, we had half a dozen guitarists ( Including Max) , Joel provided amazing piano, his wife Pearl added mouth harp, Dave Diamond, TJ, Dwanye and Shelia Thorpe... The allotted time ran right over and part way into lunch no one even noticed... On of the best parts of Getway is the informal evening music when anything goes, everyone plays and pure enjoyment is the only requirement... Blues are definately welcome. Heck they even let me sing the ol' Lil Johnson, Barrel House Annie style stuff. Honest anything goes. So ya'll just have to come on down this year. Besides if I'm ever going to figure out how to play along to this Blues stuff I need ya to come teach me... Tinker |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 20 Mar 04 - 11:15 AM Well I keep wishing my fairy godmother would appear and say I can come but unless the lotto has my numbers it looks unlikely - boo hoo. But one year we'll make it though!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 20 Mar 04 - 12:33 PM OK, Jeri, let me up! I'm really looking forward to the Getaway. How do these myths get started anyway? Surely not from the following conversation: Youg woman summer vsitor on Monhegan Island to young lobster fisherman: "What do you do for excitement around here"? Lobsterman: " I wouldn't know, never been excited." |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: KT Date: 20 Mar 04 - 04:15 PM Hey, Bill D., thanks for the information back there on March 6th. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 20 Mar 04 - 08:20 PM Well then, count me in as long as the Archie Edwards Blues Foundation ain't doing a festival that weekend which I don't think we are... Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 26 Apr 04 - 10:03 PM Yes! It is beginning to look like I may not be able to make Old Songs, so this is looking better and better (although MUCH too far away. Can't we do two getaways a year??? she whined) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 27 Apr 04 - 12:29 PM I've looked through this thread from end to end, and looked at the Getaway site, but find no (even approximate) figure for cost. I realize that it may be that final fees can't be set until they are closer to the actual event, but can someone give me at least approximate costs from previous years? I would probably be attending with my Beautiful Wife. I am not an FSGW member. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,MMario Date: 27 Apr 04 - 12:55 PM (very) roughly $175 per person. I could be off $25 either way I'm sure - that's figuring the whole shebang Fri-sat-sun nights and meals saturday, sunday plus monday breakfast (friday night is a pot luck) - if my memory is correct. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Big Mick Date: 27 Apr 04 - 01:24 PM That is about right, MMario. I thought it was $161.00. Figure $175.00 for planning purposes. All meals are included. Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 27 Apr 04 - 01:44 PM To Uncle DaveO ( and any others) When the price is determined consider joining FSGW- you will get a reduction in the getaway cost (perhaps enough to cover membership), as well as the newsletter mailed to you. If you can get to the DC area, you might also enjoy the 10 concerts that are free to members. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 04 May 04 - 06:53 PM Is there room for a fat bloke and his diminutive better one-third? Vanessa and I are planning to come. We will have to travel on the 15th, as I have a gig on the 14th (likely to be the 5th album launch, as it is scheduled to be released in October). How do we get there? Which airport do we fly to? Baltimore? and is there public transport from there to the camp? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Nancy King at work Date: 04 May 04 - 08:41 PM Hi, El Greko, glad you can make it! There's always room for more! Yes, Baltimore is the airport to fly into; it's definitely the closest. There is no public transportation to the camp from there, but as we get closer to the time, post your arrival time and indicate that you need a ride from BWI to the camp. Somebody will be able to pick you up. Looking forward to meeting you! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 04 May 04 - 09:05 PM Gee, should we look into a bus from BWI to the getaway? Might be the best way.... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 13 May 04 - 12:40 AM So, who else needs a ride, and when do you get in? ( have to plan this early!) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Noreen Date: 13 May 04 - 07:45 AM George, you will have the most wonderful time, with the most wonderful people- I guarantee it. Folks- you really want to meet and hear this man. :0) Oh to be there too! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 13 May 04 - 09:02 AM I have every confidence you'll make it back again, Noreen..*smile*...and we look forward to El Greco---there seems to be no end of good singers and all-'round good people from "over there". |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Catherine Jayne Date: 13 May 04 - 09:07 AM Been looking at flights over...can get some really good deals depending on where you fly into! Can get a BA flight for about £200....will be booking our flights soon!!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 24 May 04 - 12:44 PM OK, it's final - I am coming (minus Vanessa though, logistics at home don't permit it). I arrive at BWI on Friday 15 Oct at 16:15, so by the time I clear customs etc I should be out of the terminal around 17:30 or so, I guess. Beardedbruce, will there be any transport organised to the camp, or should I grab a cab (estimated cost?)? One more thing: Do I need to apply formally to someone/somewhere? Or is this declaration of my intention sufficient? And how/to whom do I pay my dues for the weekend and how much is it? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 24 May 04 - 01:21 PM Cab would be outrageous!. We need to get organized on this, though- nothing set up yet, but we should be able to arrange things. Applications? Not sure- I get mine in the FSGW newsletter. Check with Rita, she might know the proper way for those overseas to register. See you there! ( or at the airport, depending) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 24 May 04 - 04:53 PM (sorry, Rita, if this is a problem) Perhaps I need to start a list- Can people coming in to BWI let me know when, how many people, and about how much "stuff", so I can try to match up with rides, or try to arrange a bus? Not sure who should take care of this, so... I guess I volunteer. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 24 May 04 - 04:54 PM The precise costs are still being decided. (There are probably adjustments for people who come only part of the time and daytrippers, reflecting the cost of the camp rental more accurately.) But the costs for full-timers will be similar to previous years (ranging from $130-$170 U.S. dollars, depending on whether or not you're a member of FSGW and whether or not you stay over for Monday breakfast, with price-breaks for youngsters and full-time students). As soon as that's all decided, the registration form (what El Greko calls the application form above) will be created. It'll be printed in the FSGW newsletter, but a copy will be downloadable from the web in .pdf format, and everyone at Mudcat will know about it. (There will be an announcement either in this thread of some successor thread). Last year, an FSGW member with a British chequeing account made it possible for some people to pay in British pounds sterling. We'll see what we can do this year, if enough people need foreign money exchange. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 24 May 04 - 04:58 PM Thank you, Charlie. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 24 May 04 - 05:12 PM Maybe there could be a sign-up sheet somewhere. Rides needed (when, from where, etc) and volunteers (who, and maybe what their car and they look like ("I'm 50-ish, balding, and I have a beer belly and a beard." Haha.*) Dear El, Rita or Charley or someone usually posts information about the application when the time is right. If the rumors I've heard about you here are even halfway true, I'm going to enjoy meeting you, and hearing you sing. * No, That doesn't describe me currently. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: beardedbruce Date: 24 May 04 - 05:19 PM It certainly does NOT! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 24 May 04 - 10:19 PM Hot Damn! There are now cheap flights from Burlington VT to Dullas. Is this also a reasonable possibility, or should I still get my sorry butt to Manchester NH and fly into BWI with all of the rest? It adds about $50 to the cost to bus down there, but if that's the better locale, I'll do it. Just sent in my registration for Old Songs and am planning a music weekend as well. This is too much happieness. Susan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 24 May 04 - 10:27 PM Oh, I don't think it's "sorry." Maybe not as tight as a teenager's, but whose the hell is? Peter (Well, you brought it on yourself. Someone was bound to use that opportunity.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 24 May 04 - 10:42 PM Ah you just haven't seen it lately. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 24 May 04 - 11:04 PM well, Dulles is over an hour further away than BWI, and on a Friday afternoon that could stretch to 2 hrs...distances are deceiving when moving in Washington beltway and I-95 traffic. I live only 1½ hrs or so from the camp, and **I** leave early to miss Friday traffic. I could probably pick up someone at BWI if they arrive there by 3PM or so....but don't even ask me to backtrack to Dulles...*grin* (I bring a lot of 'stuff', including crafts, so I need extra time to unload and get set up, and Rita is program chair....so we tend to be among the first arrivals) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 25 May 04 - 12:16 AM Curiously enough, the Philadelphia airport (PHL) is probably closer to Camp Ramblewood than Dulles (IAD). (Not that getting a ride from PHL to Darlington is going to be easy.) But it IS another airport to look at, in case you get bargain flights there. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dani Date: 25 May 04 - 07:46 AM I'll be driving right by BWI, can arrange the time to suit flyers on that Friday. Assuming Janie's coming with, we'll have room for one other and their stuff, or two with not much stuff. Charlie's right about PHL: it's a zippy on and off of 95 for those coming from the North. Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 25 May 04 - 08:13 AM Dibs on the space in Dani's car! Dani, I should have a guitar, a small bag for the weekend and possibly a sleeping bag. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 28 May 04 - 09:46 PM Great news Kendall. It will be great to hear you sing again. Tawmmie has agreed to let me go even though she won't be able to attend herself. And George, I can't wait to meet you too and swap some original songs with you. My plans are not yet finalized, but here is a rough estimate. I'm going to be flying into Newark airport on 10/13. Then spending the 14th with my daughter who has recently accepted a directing internship with the McCarter Theater in Princeton. I will be driving the rental car from Princeton to Darlington on the morning of the 15th and should have room for a fellow traveler or 2. I plan to leave The Getaway late Monday morning 10/18 and drive back to Princeton for another day with my daughter before heading back to Newark and boarding a return flight to Anchorage on the 20th. I am really looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. If I can assist anyone to get there or back home please let me know. I can always use a harmony singer while driving. Mike |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 30 May 04 - 07:15 AM Mike, without Tawmmie, what are you going to do if you forget the words? Also, does this mean we can go ahead with the drunken orgy? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 30 May 04 - 10:11 AM Kendall, what do you mean IF I forget the words? Isn't that how the "folk" process works? The singer can't remember the correct lyrics so he invents new ones. And I told you not to mention the drunken orgy. By the way, which cabin will that be in again? Lyrics aren't the only things I forget. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 30 May 04 - 11:56 AM I am in awe, Kendall & Mike.....the more *I* drink, the less I orgy!....but I can forget as well as ANY of you! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 25 Jun 04 - 12:09 AM Ok, time passes and plans change. My son and his family recently moved to Traverse City, Michigan and my daughter is moving to Princeton, New Jersey in August. I would like to visit them both while I am back east. I am planning to fly into Newark on 10/13, but since I will not be returning the rental car to the same airport, renting a car is too expensive. I plan to take the train to Princeton, and spend the 14th with my daughter. I will require transportation assistance. First, I need a ride from Princeton to Darlington on or about the morning of the 15th of October. Then after the Getaway, I need to beg a ride either to Michigan, or to a bus station that will get me to Michigan. Traveling from Alaska always develops into a major adventure. Those of you who can help me with transportation can be assured of being mentioned in any road songs that are written as a result. I might even bring down some more Alaskan Smoked Salmon for car munchies. Thanks in advance, let me know by PM if you can help me out. I just can't wait to go to another Getaway. Best wishes, Mike |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Genie Date: 08 Jul 04 - 09:04 PM Big Mick recently sort of encouraged me come to this year's Getaway (after I told him how much I enjoy his Follow Me Up To Carlow/The Swallowtail on the Mudcat Blue Place Special) ;-D and it looks like it fits my schedule. Having volunteered to be "bumped" on a recent flight, I now have a free ticket that I can use to get to DC or thereabouts (anywhere Alaska or American Airlines fly). So I'm seriously considering it. I'd love to get to meet you 'catters from remote places! I just started reading this thread, so now I'll go catch up. What I need to find is more stuff about where to stay, carpooling or public transportation, and what the heck goes on (officially, at least) ;-) at the Gathering. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 08 Jul 04 - 10:10 PM Charlie Baum posts the registration forms later in the Summer...(this camp has plenty of room, so no one need panic about getting in....but those who have a distance to travel should consider plane reservations based on the dates, times & ideas already posted. We can usually scare up rides from local airports...and BWI, as noted, is by FAR the closest. Hope to see all those who are thinking about it! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Nancy King Date: 08 Jul 04 - 10:14 PM Hi Genie, glad you can make it! Hopefully your free airline ticket will allow you to fly into BWI (Baltimore-Washington Intl.), which is definitely the closest airport to the camp. As we get closer to the event, let folks know what time you'll be arriving, and someone will be able to pick you up. If it has to be some other airport, we can probably still help, especially if your arrival time is fairly early. Accommodations at the Getaway are in group cabins, unheated but with real mattresses and indoor plumbing. You'll need to bring a sleeping bag or some other bedding (though if that's a problem we can usually arrange a loan) and warm clothes, as it gets fairly nippy in mid- to late October. The event and the camp are described pretty well here, and as for the spirit of the thing, see Ferrara's post of 09 Mar., 12:46 a.m. (she's a night person...) in this thread. I've been coming to the Getaway for the last 30 years or so, and ALWAYS have a grand time. My kids have been coming since they were very small, and now that they're grown up they still try to make it whenever they can. In recent years we've had more and more Mudcatters join us, and they've made it even better! Looking forward to meeting you! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Jul 04 - 11:43 PM I'm a definite CAN'T again this year. Workshop, Bishop visit, then west for #1 son's wedding. All of which I most definitely DO want to do. Someday! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Genie Date: 09 Jul 04 - 04:12 AM Thanks, Nancy! I'll check to see if Baltimore's an option. Shouldn't be a problem to bring bedding. Thanks for the link. Ferrara, you're not the only night owl, y'know. ;-) It'll be great to meet youse guys! (See? I'm already talking like it's a done deal.) LOL (Only thing is -- I hate to be a downer -- my dear sis is in critical condition. It has been touch and go for months now. I very well may need to use my free ticket to go be with her in Santa Rosa, if and when she's up to having visitors. Naturally, I hope she will pull through, and I hope I will be able to make the gathering this year. If for any reason I can't, I hope y'all have a great music gathering. I'm getting the hang of this "getting bumped" thingy with the airlines, so if I don't make this year, maybe I'll have another free ticket next year.) Genie |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 14 Aug 04 - 08:22 PM Ooh - sounds like a good workshop! You're gonna kick yourself if you have that surgery and 4 weeks later are singing like Jenny Lind! (And you're probably gonna want to sue the surgeon to get your nuts back.) Beardedbruce, I'm not sure the first night is good for that. Singing usually happens in the TV room, and lots of people are somewhat 'scattered', catching up with folks, and unwinding. (I'm manic for the first couple of hours after I get out of the car.) Plus, I might get there late and all the ginger, PB cups, tiramasu and cheese cake will be gone! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: SINSULL Date: 14 Aug 04 - 09:06 PM Friday night - pot luck supper, pass any available bottle, get settled into a bed, hugs all around, buttons, more hugs, "oh my god it's_____ and more hugs... And I used to be so responsible...and financially soluble. Oh well. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Aug 04 - 09:07 PM Friday nite is sorta "make it up as you go" night, depending on who arrives when...we will try to have that bulletin board in the dining hall for announcements...-or you can just stand up and yell to collect folks for special events..*grin* Dani..Rita is out of town until about Tuesday...detailed planning of workshops will start then..(as you see, a few have been percolating behind the scenes all summer)...I was convinced it was all magic until Rita took it on a few years ago, and now I know better. LOTS of emails and phone calls and post on Mudcat go into it...but if we know exactly WHO is coming and their wishes, suggestions, offers...etc., it makes sorting it all out a bit easier. It's rough having so many talents and ideas available that we can't possibly do them all...*grin*... Toss in suggestions on this thread for a few days, I guess...but I will wait until Rita is home and let HER tell you how to contact her directly... Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Aug 04 - 06:22 AM My registration will be posted later today. I am SO looking forward to this chance to meet some of the N.America-based Catters! Alaska Mike, are you up for some song-swapping? a) BEGGING LIFTS : I'll be landing (BWI) at 16:15 on Friday - so should be out of the airport by 17:30 I guess - and also need to be at BWI by 18:00 on Sunday for the return flight b) CAN ANYONE LEND A 12-string for the weekend? Otherwise I will be bringing my Yamaha. Never tried bringing an instrument on long-haul before, I confess to some trepidation about it. Other than that - roll on October! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 18 Aug 04 - 11:03 AM Hey George, I can't wait to swap some songs with you. Its a shame that you have to leave Sunday night before its over, but we'll just have to make the best of the time we are there. *TRAVEL UPDATE: I have found a Greyhound bus that delivers me to Aberdeen, Maryland at about 4:30 pm on October 15th. This is 12 miles or so from Ramblewood to the south. Does anyone know of a shuttle bus or kind soul who could help me cover the last 12 miles? *MAJOR THANKS to Big Mick for helping me get from the Getaway to Michigan afterwards. And thanks to the many others who offered their help. See you all in a couple months. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 04 - 12:34 PM El Greco (and Alaska Mike)..I am usually AT the camp by that time, but we will keep the thread alive and confer with locals.....we almost always find rides, especially when they are convenient, like from BWI or Aberdeen!...Lits of folks will be puttering up that way during those times. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: SINSULL Date: 18 Aug 04 - 01:16 PM It looks as if I will be flying in as well. I will post the time when I have it. El Greko - landing 3:15 on Friday and leaving 6PM Sunday? Kendall may be bringing his 12-string. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 18 Aug 04 - 03:25 PM I will bring my 12 ElGreko and you are welcome to use it. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 Aug 04 - 04:58 AM I don't think my better one-third would let me, with 9 guitars in the house already... She's unreasonable like that. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:14 AM The reservation for myself and Kris for all three nights went out this morning. We had to wait to find out if Kris could get Monday and Friday off. As Getaway Virgins, we'll need help deciding what to bring and what not to. I assume a warm sleeping bag (not a problem for Vermonters) and a couple of instruments - one good and one not so good. Clothes - do we need anything beyond jeans and sweatshirts; or shorts and tee shirts if we get lucky on weather? Does the camp have an alcohol policy - negative, positive, or laizzez-faire? P. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: kendall Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:26 AM Bring warm clothes. It gets mighty chilly at night. Warm bedding, no heat in the rooms. Don't worry about booze unless you plan to drive. Instruments are left lying around at all hours so bring your best. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:31 AM Hi Peter & Kris I'm really looking forward to seeing you both again. Can't get enough of those limericks! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Big Mick in Toronto Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:00 AM I am starting to get very excited about this one. It is shaping up to be an even more wonderful gathering than the usual spectacular. Rita, I assume it was you that called. The answer is an emphatic YES that I will be there. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:24 AM we are fortunate that at this camp, we don't have to to be coy about alcohol as we did in former years. Be reasonable, but enjoy your favorite libation. (There were some amazing stories about beer runs told by the Shellbacks and their guides last year..*grin*). (yeah, Mick, that was Rita..good to know you'll be back) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Big Mick Date: 23 Aug 04 - 11:31 AM Yep, Bill, wouldn't miss it for the world. I will be in touch when I am back from Toronto. BTW, I will be on "Acoustic Workshop" tonight with Heather. Hope some 'Catters will listen in. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 23 Aug 04 - 09:12 PM Okay, Bill 'er Rita, I know I keep askin' but is it too late to get accomodations. If so, what's close and are other folks staying there so maybe some designation drunk/designated driver stuff can be arranged? Plus, do you need anyone to do a blues workshop fir kids 'er folks that ain't learnt the basics... Bobert |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 04 - 10:08 PM well..registration has just begun,Bobert...you can look at the link in Charlie Baum's post above. The camp is way bigger than WE are likely to fill...no problem having a place. As to blues, I dunno...it's on the thread now...maybe some other blues folks like Joel or Max or Roger from Baltimore can tell you what the situation is..I know you'll get a chance to PLAY blues...it always happens.. |

Please check in over there if you're really & truly coming: since we are the folks who put on the program for ourselves, I have to know who "we" are. I'll try to put together a preliminary list, but some of it will be guesswork. I've had a lot of good suggestions for workshops so far, will keep you up to date on the other thread as best I can as the program starts to take shape. (This is a wee bit later than I usually start the program but that's not going to be a problem.) Rita |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 07 Sep 04 - 03:52 PM I'm sorry to report that I won't get there, despite my earlier intention. My wife is having breast cancer surgery right about that time, and I'm pretty sure the timing will make it impossible for me to be away from Indianapolis that weekend. With that uncertainty, I won't spend the money registering, so even if I'm free to travel then it will be too close to the time. I hope to you y'all next year, though. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 09 Sep 04 - 12:20 AM Dennis Cook, the Getaway registrar has requested that if anyone (else) wishes to pay in foreign currency, to please contact him first via e-mail (dennis@fsgw.org) and discuss it with him, rather than sending cheques for pounds sterling to the United States. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 09 Sep 04 - 10:41 AM Dave, I'm sorry you won't be able to be there, and sorrier your wife has to go through this. I hope everything goes well for her. I'm out of ink at the moment and I need to print the registration! (Of course, there's the chance that I won't have any money left after buying the ink, but I'll have to risk it.) I could print it in magenta or cyan - I still have some of those colors left, but I think I might get on someone's you-know-what list. SINSULL...THREE jugs!? Must make it a real bitch to buy bras. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 18 Sep 04 - 04:42 PM I'm looking for a ride to and from the Getaway from DC. I'm visiting my brother in Northwest (Friendship Heights) Is this a possibility for anyone? I can metro to a meeting spot pretty easily. I'll be able to leave early Friday afternoon and don't have to be back in the DC area until Monday afternoon. Glad to help schlep stuff if I can be helpful to organizers (although I and my fiddle and sleeping bag take up some space and may not fit in with all of the organizer stuff.) Susan A-R |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Morticia Date: 18 Sep 04 - 08:25 PM I too have to submit my apologies and I bet you all know what it's costing me not to be there to toast the happy couple and see you all again.......but there's a chance I will be changing jobs ( lessened by my managers way less than enthusiastic reference) and then moving house so it just can't be done.Sing a song for me won't you, and kiss both Kendall and Jacqui with enthusiasm? I know I can rely on you all. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 18 Sep 04 - 08:48 PM Susan A-R...there's a good chance we (Rita & I) can do it, if you don't get a better offer in the next month. We go Fri afternoon, and leave Monday between 10-12ish....We are in Wheaton, near the Wheaton Metro...keep in contact. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: KT Date: 18 Sep 04 - 10:38 PM Greetings, all! Ebbie and I are in the same boat as Susan A-R. If there are any folks traveling from the DC area who've got space for a couple more, we'd be so grateful. We'd be happy to help with set up, registration, whatever. We arrive on Wednesday before and leave Tuesday after. We are looking forward to seeing DC and the GETAWAY and the fall colors and meeting new Catters, and..... Morticia, so sorry we're going to miss you!!! Are you SURE? KT |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 23 Sep 04 - 10:47 PM Bill, Sounds like a great offer to me. I'm also a good Schlepper of stuff, and as I recall, you folks had a lot of it to Schlep. More later. Susan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Allan C. Date: 24 Sep 04 - 03:28 PM I'm gettin' excited! I've sent what will have to pass for a registration (the damned printer wouldn't print the form!) and expect to be dragging my trailer into the lot sometime after noon on the Friday. I've been looking forward to seeing you folks all year long. (Fortunately, I have already seen some of you recently already and so it is a double blessing!) Having the trailer there will be a novelty for me. It will be the first time I will be able to sleep at the Getaway in heated comfort (heh heh heh). There is sleeping space available for others, (how many is dependent upon how friendly they are,) if they can put up with my sonorous snoring. PM me if you have any interest. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Col K Date: 24 Sep 04 - 04:26 PM How I wish that I could be with you all again this year.I had hoped to be but things have a habit of changing, but who knows another year and we will see what happens. Have a great time all of you, Love Colin |
Subject: Lift wanted.... From: George Papavgeris Date: 29 Sep 04 - 06:04 PM OK, with just over two weeks to go, it's time to get my act together. And first of all, lift: Is there a kind soul on wheels out there that would provide a weary traveller with a lift from Baltimore BWI airport to the Getaway? I land at 16:15 on Friday 15/Oct; by the time I have been cleared through passports, customs etc, I suspect it will be closer to 17:30. Two pieces of luggage - a smallish case and my sleeping bag; or just one suitcase, if I can fit the sleeping bag in it. So, any takers? Pretty please? With olives on top? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 29 Sep 04 - 06:10 PM someone sure will, El Greco...I will already be at the camp by then, but no traveler goes un-lifted..*grin*...we'll see how the offers flow.. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 29 Sep 04 - 06:30 PM If you're still thinking about coming, it's time to send in your registration. Stop procrastinating. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Nancy King Date: 29 Sep 04 - 06:36 PM OK, Charlie, mine will be in the mail tomorrow! I've been waiting to see if I could arrange to stay over Sunday night, but looks like it won't happen this year. Again. Sigh. Working sure takes a big chunk outa the week... Nancy |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 29 Sep 04 - 11:27 PM Ahhhhh, if yer into art, the Hirshorn Gallery at the Smith Sonian... They have a lot of Matisse sculture, a DuBuffet, Henry Moore, Caravieggio, ect.... The National Gallery? Music? Hey, its pot luck and most of the good stuff is in small joints in the suburbs... Ahhhh, what are ya' intersted in seein'? Bobert |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 29 Sep 04 - 11:27 PM what not to miss?..oh, my...there are a dozen museums on the mall, any one of which you could spend a month in! Do those in the morning... and the folk music area of the Library of Congress is not too far away. Do that in the afternoon. then in your spare time..... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Big Mick Date: 29 Sep 04 - 11:39 PM I agree with every one of those suggestions. The hot ticket right now is the Museum of the American Indian (hate that name). But if you have never been in the Capitol before, I must tell you that you need to walk into the Rotunda and spend an hour or so. I have been to DC so many times, usually on lobbying stuff for the Union, that I get a bit jaded. But one simply cannot walk into that Rotunda and not get a chill. Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Micca Date: 30 Sep 04 - 06:07 AM And, of course there is the soiree at Chance Fortunato's in Silver Spring (PM Fortunato for info)in the evening of the Thursday!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Midchuck Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:50 AM Copy of e-Mail to Dennis Cook, this morning: My wife, Kristina Cady, and I have sent in deposits for the Getaway. After a great deal of thought and discussion, we have concluded, with extreme regret, that there are so many other demands on our time and energy at that point in time, that it isn't possible for us to make the trip, and we will not be sending in the rest of the money. If it were only 4 or 5 hours drive, instead of 8 or 10.... I don't know whether you give refunds at this point, or not. If you do, keep it and buy beer for those attending. If the liquor laws forbid that, buy ice cream and doughnuts. Thank you for your help. Peter and Kristina Cady Pittsford, VT Damn. Peter. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 30 Sep 04 - 09:51 AM Peter, it's a heck of a thing for you to have to give up an entire weekend of music and camraderie because of the time on the road. I had to leave on Sunday morning one year, and I really missed that day's music. We need Star Trek type transporters! I'll miss you both, and I'm sure everyone who's met you will too. People who haven't yet had the pleasure will miss the chance. (Except the Chance who's hosting the Thurdsday night thing.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Nancy King Date: 30 Sep 04 - 12:03 PM Yup, Jeri -- I firmly believe the next big scientific breakthrough has GOT to be teleportation. Well, Peter, I sure hope you can make it next year! El Greko, I would be happy to pick you up at BWI if you don't want to wait for Gary. Let's see, 16:15 is 4:15 in time-I-can-understand, and 17:30 is 5:30. That's the middle of rush hour, of course, but one can make allowance for that -- I should be able to show up there at about 5 p.m. I have a station wagon, and could probably accommodate two people and their stuff (within reason), so anyone else who needs a ride from BWI about that time should PM me, and we'll work it out. Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: jacqui.c Date: 30 Sep 04 - 12:14 PM Peter - that is so disappointing. I was really looking forward to seeing you and Kris again. Ah well, that just means we'll have to come and visit you at some point, doesn't it. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Ferrara Date: 30 Sep 04 - 01:34 PM Peter, as I read your post I just thought "OUCH!!!" So sorry to hear that. Rita |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,LynnT Date: 30 Sep 04 - 03:10 PM Looks like I'll be able to come this year again after all -- last year was my first time back after years away, and it was as if I'd never left! And I SOOO enjoyed having Alaska Mike and Tawmee camped out in my driveway for several days after-- we had a marvelous time in Annapolis crashing Seamus (sp?) Kennedy's gig there. I apologize for being such a sucky correspondent, Mike! If somebody needs a ride up Friday, coming back Sunday evening, I'll be happy to oblige. I live in Lanham MD near the New Carrollton metro (which is also an AMTRAK station), and I drive a Corolla wagon that can hold vast quantities of things and people. My plans Friday are flexible, but we'll need to leave room in the car for several plants, both ways -- I'll be ducking out of the Getaway for a few hours Saturday afternoon to go to a Plant Exchange the other side of Baltimore, should be back for dinner -- anyone want anything in particular? I know I'll have several Gladwin Irises to swap... What kind of liquor d'you want me to put in the Killer Fudge Sauce this year? Last year it was Cointreau in one batch, Frangelico in the other... Lynn |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 30 Sep 04 - 05:18 PM LYNN!!! Its great to know you will be back. Having not heard from you in so long, I thought maybe you had been devoured by mutant, flesh eating show mice. Bring lots of Killer Fudge Sauce. I couldn't believe how tasty that stuff was last year. After the jar broke, we had to suck the last remnants off the shards, but we managed to do it without bleeding to death. I wasn't about to throw any of it away. I will be bringing some Alaska smoked salmon once again. People seemed to enjoy it last year and I've got plenty of fish in the freezer. Only 2 weeks to go!! Whoopie!!! Mike |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Susan A-R Date: 30 Sep 04 - 09:13 PM Bother!! Woodchucks, I just invested in cheap airline tickets because the trip, followed by sleep deprivation, followed by more travel was a bad idea. Check out Independence Air out of Burlington Puleeze!!!!!! (I know it's still expensive, but so is gas and wear and tear and missing folk music and . . . . ) Don't leave me Aloooooone! Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,LynnT Date: 01 Oct 04 - 06:07 AM So glad you like the stuff, Mike! There'll be a big jar, packed up real careful, for you to take back to Tawmee! You're right, I fell off the edge of the world for a while. One big change -- I don't have mice anymore, alas. I folded down the colony in about February (and made a bundle off the internet auction -- folks across the country were fighting over my bloodlines). And I still judge Mouse Shows regularly. Amazing how much more time there is on the weekend now, without 40 cages to clean! Can't tell whether the improvement in the general atmosphere in the house is due more to their absence or the lack of a certain large Labrador, though. (Anyone who's curious, check out Fancy English Show Mice on Google :)) KT or Susan A_R, d'you still need a ride? I can take one or two people up Friday afternoon, but I'm coming back Sunday night (gotta work Monday) so if you didn't want to do that you'd need to make other return arrangements. Happy to do a bit of driving to pick you up, though. Does this mean I get to come to the Thursday soiree? LynnT |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 04 Oct 04 - 01:51 PM Mike...you may not realize what a rare, special treat good Salmon is here! Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Alaska Mike Date: 04 Oct 04 - 02:19 PM I'm flying into Newark on the 14th and spending the night with my daughter in Princeton. Then Tinker (bless her heart) is picking me up and driving me to Ramblewood on the 15th. Then Mick (bless his heart too) is forwarding me to Michigan afterwards to visit my son and his family. I fly home out of Grand Rapids on Sunday the 24th. I will try to have several packages of Salmon and will space them out over the evening of October 15th so hopefully, all can get a taste. Perhaps I'll bring some other delicacies as well. Muktuk (whale fat dipped in seal oil) would certainly spark some conversation I am sure. Camai, Mike |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Tinker Date: 04 Oct 04 - 02:56 PM Of course, I have pretty much guaranteed there will be Salmon when I arrive....Mmmmmm...... And for anyone who wants to mix it up for their muse I've got a dozen chocolete shot glasses... Tinker |

Got a double bed up there if there are any honeymooners interested.... get out the satin comforter just for you.... and the sheep pelts... oh yeah! But-- it's WAY too quiet up there-- c'mon, help me out! I'll be away till Weds-pre-G'way, but back in plenty of time to fire up the endless crockpot. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 04 Oct 04 - 05:01 PM MMario, maybe halfway between the Getaway and Toronto, but I think maybe a big detour on the way back to Michigan. Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Pauline L Date: 05 Oct 04 - 12:10 AM Is anyone driving to the Getaway from the environs of Detroit? I need some help, and that's what friends are for (that and other things). I have been through some very hard times in the last couple of years: no job, no money, no car, no love. Now I have a job. Some friends of mine in the Michigan/Madison, Wisc./Detroit area have a beat up old car which I can have (!!) if someone will only drive it here for me. Please, please, somebody help me! I'll pay you for expenses and some extra for appreciation. If you like, you can come to the DC area pre-Getaway, stay in my home, and go to Fortunato's party on Thursday night with me. I will be forever grateful... Pauline |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 05 Oct 04 - 01:33 PM Does the Getawatake place on the same weekend each year or does it vary? Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dani Date: 14 Oct 04 - 02:35 PM Any locals reading this? I'm not sure, but it seems to me that in the past, 495 has been a poor route to take at rush hour. Can someone who lives there please advise the best way to come if it's late afternoon? Or the magical time to pass through the chute? And are there people coming to BWI who don't have rides, or travelers still in need of bedding or kazoos? Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 04 - 03:15 PM 'magical time'on FRIDAY?...before 2PM..*grin* or after 8... there is no real easy way, coming from the south, to avoid 95-495 till you get North of town, then you can use a couple tricks the last 60-70 miles. Let me look at a map....and hope Charlie Baum sees this...he is our walking AAA. more soon... when are you starting and approximate schedule? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 04 - 03:43 PM it 'looks' like catching 301 between Richmond & Fredricksburg could help, but it ain't clear what is best to do as you approach Baltimore....I have only driven out there once or twice. Charley would know if there IS any sane route thru it all... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dani Date: 14 Oct 04 - 04:25 PM Actually, I'm just wondering if it makes sense to stay on 95 instead of 495. That's where I remember a mess. Or am I mis-remembering the whole thing? Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 04 - 04:33 PM 95 is 495 going around DC...it is the 495 area that will be the main mess, as there is construction where they join...and heavy traffic all the way around the Beltway and past Baltimore. Rits will be picking up someone south of DC, and she says Mapquest gave her a good sounding route using 301 and other roads past Baltimore to Darlington.. She is gone for a couple hours, but we'll see if you are still considering it then....and maybe Charlie will pop in. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 14 Oct 04 - 06:28 PM I'm going to attempt the Tappan Zee bridge route in order to miss the big traffic jam I usually wind up in that makes me 1.5 - 2 hours later than I think I'm going to be. I'm all packed and just have to shove clothes, instruments and me in the car tomorrow. I'm bringing a spare blanket. There's no way I'm going to fit Carly's "thing" in the car unless it turns into a tardis by tomorrow. I'm bringing imported Turkish pistachios, and hopefully won't eat them all on the road. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 14 Oct 04 - 08:13 PM As for the 495 question? Yeah, there are alternatives other than 301, which will take you right into Waldorf, Md and a bigger mess than what you are trying to avoid... For those of you who must take 95 North (if 81 is not an option) then take 17 West in Fredrickesburg. (This road actually run northwest). About 30 miles up 17 you'll pass Warrenton and then a few more miles (about 8) take a left on Rt. 15 North. Take 15 to Fredrich, Md., then 70 east to 695 (Baltimore's beltway) take inner loop to 95 North. This will save you at least an hour and maybe 2, depending on time of day... Bobert |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Ferrara Date: 14 Oct 04 - 08:29 PM Dani, I'm coming up from St. Mary's City, on the western shore of the Bay. I'll start at Rte 2/Solomons Island Rd. north, onto Airs T. Allen Blvd/MD 665 N toward us 50/301. 665N becomes I-97N. merge onti I-895 Spur N via exit on LEFT toward I-895/Harbor Tunnel. I-895 Spur N becomes Harbor Tunnel Trwy/I-895N becomes I-95N. From there you know the route. Don't know if you can hook into these roads, for example at I-97, and miss 495 or whether it would be more trouble and distance than it's worth. Anyway that's all the info I have. Rita |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 14 Oct 04 - 10:00 PM Dani-- Western Bypass (as recommended by Bobert): I-95 N to Fredericksburg US 17 North to Warrenton and beyond US 15 North to Leesburg (use bypass around Leesburg; expect traffic here) US 15 North to Frederick I-70 East to Baltimore I 695 North and then East past Towson to I-95 I-95 North to Havre de Grace Eastern Bypass: I-95 North to Bowling Green, VA VA 207 North/East to Bowling Green US 301 North through Waldorf/La Plata to US 50 If you don't make any turns at US 50, US 301 North runs into MD 3 North MD 3 North to I-97 North I-97 North toward Baltimore I-895 North through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to I-95 I-95 North to Havre de Grace Or coming up through the center: I-95 to the I-495 Beltway At I-495, you can go EITHER WAY around DC--it's equidistant Listen to WTOP (1500 AM) which has traffic every 10 minutes. If they mention problems on the outer loop at the Wilson Bridge or Prince George's County---that's I-495 East/I-95 North they're talking about If they mention problems on the inner loop at the American Legion Bridge (or Tyson's Corner, I-270, Bethesda), that's I-495 West they're talking about. You pays your money; you takes your chances. Good luck. See you tomorrow, g-d willing and the traffic volume don't rise. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Oct 04 - 10:36 AM Would someone please pass a message on to Big Mick for me--- MMario and I have been looing for a chance to meet in person, and chat about next plans for a certain Fund I'm pretty sure Mick is aware of..... there are others who are in need now and wil be in future..... so I guess we'll be discussing it at my house post-Getatway, Monday..... would love to have him join us to offer wisdom...... I think Mick will understand what I am talking about. Anyone present can share in the discussion, I think Dick & Susan will be here as well.... lot of space left in the Mudcat Dorm here for Monday & Tuesday night..... even for musicians who travel in GAS-fed cars! So can someone print this and pass it to him, since I imagine he's on the road now, or at least give it to MMario? ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 15 Oct 04 - 11:03 AM I just printed it and will give it to him. Mick said he was going to get a bit of sleep and leave in the wee hours of the morning. I'm not sure how long it takes him, but I'm thinking his getting there before me last year was an anomoly. I'll be on the road in 5-10 minutes. I figure I'll get there around 7, which means I'll probably really get there around 9. Lets hope I remembered to bring everything important. Later, y'all! |

Reckon I'll be the only one walkin' round tomorrow without eyes that look like roadmaps... Bobert |
