"and you just don't look good naked anymore"

Kendall,
I have been in your house. There are two mirrors - one in the bathroom and a big one in the living room. I have a hard time picturing you balancing on a futon or the toilet seat trying to get a good look at your butt. How do you know it's not wrinkled? More importantly, how does Amos know it is?
Inquiring minds want to know.
SINS

Aw bairns i missed this with being down south at hospital with my stubborn bissim. You are Both in our thoughts and prayers. Jacqui write it in the biggest thickest book you can find and keep hitting him with it till he gives in, mine came up with a beaut while in hospital "If i had known i was going to put you through all this I would never have married you." yeah right like they have any choice :)

Of course its not wrinkled Kendal my dear, it is just gently folded at regular intervals.

Of course we understand the loss--losing other parts of our functionality is a shock, surgical removal of an organ or a limb, but our eyes, ears, and voice, those are our interface with the world. Losing any one of those makes the other two work harder and means things will never be exactly the same again.

Kendall, your friends and loved ones are urging you to choose life. Make the choice that to you and your doctors gives you the best chance for a long and curmudgeonly life. And if you have a few options to choose between with the same relative outcome, then you're fortunate and can choose to give yourself the most latitude. As a friend told me when I was making a similar choice regarding cancer surgery, "don't choose based on recuperation from the surgery, choose based on recovering from the cancer."

Good luck!

jacqui, you stated it very movingly. We have been telling him & telling him, but, as you noted, he is a tad stubborn. We all know he is more than his voice; he's the only one who still needs to be convinced of it. Kendall, I hope you get what you want, but I hope even more that we get to keep you!

best,

Barbara

I was very attracted to this guy before I even met him - purely from the things he wrote - and have only ever known him since he has had a problem with his voice. I love Kendall for what he is now - not for the voice I never heard until AFTER I knew that I loved him. I must admit that when I listened to Beginner's Luck for the first time I cried because I could go somewhere toward understanding his loss then, but he makes me laugh and I know that I have found someone I want to spend my life with, whether or not he can ever sing again. Kendall knows this because I've told him so but he can be a stubborn b****r! I would prefer Kendall without a singing voice to no Kendall at all.

I'm glad that others are now telling him the same thing - he still has a lot he can do - storytelling can still be done, even if he can't sing, he can play a mean guitar and he can write another book of tall tales.

Trust Mick to make me spit out my bean and cheese burrito....

I've got a minute between lunch and dinner messes/shifts at the restaurant, and checked in here. I'll be thinking of you this weekend, and on Monday. Your wait reminds me of that obnoxious poster, "Any asshole can handle a crisis, it's the day-to-day living that grinds you down!" Insert 'waiting', right? I'm with you. Don't mind pain, as much as waiting and wondering.

And, Kendall, listen to these folks. It may be your voice that YOU'D miss, but ask the rest of these folks what they're worried about.... Janie? Tinker? Jacqui? Ladies? Anyone?

Dani

Now I'll just go out to the garden and call SINS and see if we can dream up more ways to embarrass you with our love.... Beware.... lots of "simply" postitive stuff is coming your way.

Love Ya,

Tinker

Thanks, CapriUni, for saying what I was about to. Some times this crusty old son of a misbegotten deck ape doesn't get that we don't love him because of his voice. It's him that we care about. Quite frankly, I could care less if he sings and tells jokes, writes songs and passes me notes with great lines, or if he tattoos them on his wrinkled old ass. It is only important to me that I still have him as my friend, and mentor.

All the best,

Mick

Hang tough Kendall
I have, as I'm sure many Mudcatters have, spent a damned eternity waiting for biopsy results to come back, and I have like others, when the news finally came, heard the disembodied, uneasy voice on the other end of the phone saying, "I'm sorry,but...".
My prayers-if thats ok- go with you.I truly hope things check out alright, but if they don't you can take some solace in the notion that if a wussie like me can hold off the big C for almost 5 years (and counting) then anybody can.
All the Best

Bruce - I asked Two Bears to work on this some time ago - hopefully that will lessen the problem and make the resolution easier. Little Hawk and Daylia were also going to do some work as well.

My neighbour in England is a healer and also is sending vibes so we've got a lot of help, plus all the good thoughts from Mudcatters everywhere.

Arrggh, Cap'n. "Talk Like A Pirate Day" be's the right time to parlay 'bout this sad, mizzerble perdicament yer in.   Make sure yer sawbones tries all the pirate remedies afore splittin' yer gibbet. There's plank walkin', keel haulin', bilge dippin' just to name a few.

And don't ya go gettin' yer knickers all bound up in a bunch o'er this uncharted course ye seem to be on.   Yer a crusty ol' salt and ye've weathered many a gale afore this. So keep yer eye on the horizon and show yer lovely new shipmate how best to deal with rough waters.

Me and the little woman will keep a shore light burning brightly for ya along with yer many other friends. We'll share us a pint of somethin' dark and foamy when next we cross paths at the Getaway. Arrggh.

Kendall,

I've been meaning to send you an encouraging message about my own experience -- I've spent most of 2004 (since discovering a lump in my neck and visting a doctor on New Year's Eve) dealing with my own throat cancer, and I am lucky enough to be healing up nicely now and getting *almost* back to normal.

Now that I'm back from hurricane evacuation and have read this whole thread, I can see that you're facing a tougher set of choices than I had to confront. I'm not even going into any more detail about my own situation, which isn't that much like yours, after all.

I'll say this much: I was always aware of the support, prayers, etc., of many friends and family, and I was always able to maintain such a positive attitude that my doctors and nurses often commented upon it. Did my positive mindset help bring about my eventual recovery, or was I able to maintain that good attitude only because I somehow knew I'd come out of it relatively OK? Who knows? All we can know for sure is that faith and hope can't hurt, so you might as well conjure up as much as you can for yourself.

It's very encouraging to see that you're starting out on a new marriage at the very time that you have to confront this nasty disease. Staying hopeful and orienting yourself to the future rather than to the past is probably the very best medicine for you, so you seem to be on the right path. You've got plenty of good friends, all over the world, sending you all the positive energy they can muster. Hang in there, buddy.

Cap'n, I have been in computer hell for nigh onto two months, and have only just gotten back and reset my cookie. I suspect when I wade through my email I will find one there too. This is the first chance I have had to read through a few threads, before heading off to play three cities in three days, the middle one with Seamus Kennedy.

This news sucks, and I must tell you that it makes me sad. I consider you a dear friend, and I wish I could take this away. You have been in my prayers as this has played out, and will continue to be. I remember being angry with you at how you were dealing with it a year ago. But I must tell you that when I read this, and the thread about you and jacqui c. getting married (that woman must be trying to earn her way into heaven by suffering on earth ...... hahahaha) in the face of this, I was so proud of you. You sure you ain't got some Irish in you somewhere?? It seems like a testament to the both of you that you are embracing this and working your way through. Often we cannot control the cards we are dealt, but we are in firm control of how we play them. I like the way you are playing these. It's a shitty hand, but you will play it well, with the assistance of a good partner. I can't wait to see you in October, and toast the happy event. And don't go getting pissy when I give the new bride a big hug and kiss. This is going to be a grand party. But I have one question. Can she throw a bowline?

Oh ..... and one more thing. "nervous as a Christian Scientist with a severed artery"? Where do you come up with this shit? Computer is back online less than a day and I have spit coffee all over the damned thing.

All the best,

Mick

All my sympathy, Kendall. It's a tough call, but think on this: Our voice, or playing, is not what defines us. That's the job of brain, heart, personality, thinking. And Kendall will always be that - Kendall, a valued friend not for his voice or playing, but for himself.

Oh Damm Kendall I can only offer mental and emotional support whatever your decision, I was lucky last time I was tested it was clear and only based on disposal utilities which whilst unpleasant are not as fundamental as the abilities you will have affected.

As I said above boy emotional and mental support completely and unequivicably (b*gg*r the spelling) given.
