Subject: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 16 Dec 04 - 11:17 AM Thought I'd share this just-arrived mail from my pal in Newcastle: Lads, One of blokes in our place, (Davie Palmer) , went on a Christmas beano yesterday afternoon - went to the Bigg Market for the "worlds hottest curry" - if you can eat it you get it for nowt - Curry Hell is the title - anyway he managed it as you can see [there was a jpeg attached] - about an hour and a half later he collapsed with acute stomach pains in the Toon and was rushed in a Taxi to A&E at the General. Worst experience of his life he reckons......today he is listening to that Johnny Cash standard "Ring of Fire". Cheers |

Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: The Beast of Farlington Date: 17 Dec 04 - 07:27 AM The legendary Palace Curry House in Manchester had three grades of curry sauce. This is true - I once went there and tried the 'mildest' one. Hot (extremely hot) Suicide (you'll want to after you have eaten it) Kamikaze (you're death rattle will sound like you are speaking Japanese) It was served in a polysterene cup to pour over you plate of chicken and rice (probably so you could change your mind if you wanted to) Legend has it that a student bet another that he couldn't drink the Kamikaze down in one. He did, but ended up in intensive care. This is almost certainly a folk-tale. You can tell because they usually emanate from a friend of a friend - bit like the Newcastle one. |

Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 01 Jan 05 - 05:26 PM Couple of you mentioned phall above. A few years ago I went to an Indian restaurant. I had never heard of phall before, and when I saw they had chicken phall, lamb phall, and tofu phall. I ordered chicken phal, just to complete my education. It did! Wow! But I generally like hot food, and I wasn't about to let myself be vanquished. I ate it all. When the Indian waiter came with the bill, he told me, "Sir, I have GREAT respect for you! I couldn't eat that!" My education now having been completed, I will never order phall again! Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: GUEST,matthew dawes Date: 14 Jan 05 - 02:36 PM Why are tou all talking about phall as the hottest indian curry . It`s not and never has been indian. And the rupali restaraunt in newcastle serves up curry hell. its not a phall, its something he made up himself. I know cause ive eaten it and ordered another. Ive worn the special robes he has out the back for the chosen few. i`ve had my picture taken and iv`e got the certificate so don`t go on about phall as the hottest. its just an appetizer. |

Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: Teresa Date: 15 Jan 05 - 09:51 AM I've never had anything in the U.S. that approached what I had at a restaurant in Victoria , BC as the #5 curry on a scale of 10. I wonder sometimes if the employees of the restaurants are laughing up their sleeves, knowing what they serve is not nearly as hot as what they'd normally eat! :D Ok, not curry, but in the San francisco Bay Area, I went to a bar that served a "havanero (SP?) burger". (I'm trying to spell the cuban pepper.) anyway, I had to sign a release form, and I got a certificate of accomplishment. Well, twenty-four hours later, I soon found out why. It was actually quite flavorful, which is something I can't normally say for "hot" foods. Teresa |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 15 Jan 05 - 03:27 PM Teresa, the word (spelling) you want is "habanero", which is acknowledged by all the experts to be the hottest pepper there is. Incidentally, "habanero" would be a man (well, a person) from Havana. You wouldn't catch ME eating a Habaneroburger! Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: GUEST,smiler Date: 16 Jan 05 - 02:15 PM Apparently in Indian restaurants in the UK, they all have a curry too hot to put on the menu, and you have to order it discretely. This is the one hotter than phaal I ordered one, and when it was served, I noticed several staff peering through the Kitchen window at me. I didn't manage to finish it. |

Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 16 Jan 05 - 03:39 PM On my grocery's shelves, I found an English curry powder, Sharwood's, labeled "Hot," with the royal seal and "By appointment to H. M. the Queen." The Queen must be a wimp. Tried it in lamb curry I made yesterday and had to keep adding in order to bring the curry up to tingle level. Finally added some pure hot chili powder. I have to go back to mixing my own from the 'makins' at an Indian store (It should be hot, but not to the point of covering up the taste of the curry ingredients, and not so mild that one might as well open a can of Campbell's lamb (mutton) and rice). |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: Geoff the Duck Date: 17 Jan 05 - 06:12 AM Q - Sharwoods are a firm who sell small jars of dried herbs and spices. I'm reasonably sure the 'World' should read 'UK', but it is true that 10 years ago, if you finished your Curry Hell, you used to get a SECOND curry for free. Hottest one I ever had was in Bradford. Nic Toczek, poet and journalist was taking me round his town, and I was paying for the meal. Nic took me to this place that had bought some advertising in one of his fanzines. the place was suspiciously empty. Try to imagine an oxo cube dropped in nitric acid. its that moment when you suddenly realise what it will be like when you've lost all your teeth, and possibly the roof of your mouth and almost certainly some internal organs. finish it....you've got to be joking. |

Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: wysiwyg Date: 28 Apr 05 - 05:06 PM It's pretty easy to make the World's Hottest. Just make up the sauce part as hot as you can, then FREEZE it. Thaw it for use, then NUKE it in the microwave or on the stovetop. These heat extremes make the chilis rock! What you get will be MUCH hotter than what you began with. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: Bill D Date: 28 Apr 05 - 11:27 PM I never saw the point of seeing 'how' hot it could be made. When tangy & spicy reach the point of pain and can cause bodily injury, why do people go out of their way to torture themselves? I love hot sauce as long as **flavor** is the primary ingredient and I don't have to suffer for a couple days afterward..."arrrrggghhhhh" I suppose it is related to the desire to drink stuff that is over 180 proof alcohol or climb a mountian until it is 40 below zero and almost impossible to breathe. I guess I'm just a tenderfoot....*grin* |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: NH Dave Date: 28 Apr 05 - 11:49 PM Most Oriental restaurant suppliers have tins of the various Thai Curry pastes, Red, Yellow, Green, and Masaman. You can make up a cury using the normal ingredients, meat, veggies, coconut milk, and then add enough of the ground curry paste to meet your particular style or Scovil number of curry. All of the Thai restaurants I've been in here in the states tend to cut the *HOT* waaay down in curries served to those just came in off the street, but they will make your curry as hot as you wish, once you let them know that their usual curries are too tame for your taste. I know that the stuff they serve over here is much cooler than what I ate in Thailand, and it took me a while to get used to what we ate over there. During this same period, I had a chance to get down to Singapore, and went on a bar grawl with my Kiwi friends. Their havit is to get almost too drunk to stand, stop off at the nearest curry cart, oder some of the hottest stuff on the menu, and when they can taste it, they figure they're set to hit a few more bars. Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: GUEST Date: 29 Apr 05 - 05:15 AM hot and spicy foods are great for you! it's just like anything, u build up a tolerance level to it, and whereas a korma is too hot for someone who's never eaten spicy food before, a phal is just right for me! anyway there was an interesting statistic regarding hot and spicy foods - in leicester, where 20% of the population is asian and from the indian subcontinent, only 5% of people in hospital suffering from colonic cancers etc were of asian origin. also the incidence of stomach / bowel cancers and diseases in asia (especially countries associated with hot foods, e.g. thailand, bangladesh, india etc.) are much lower than the world average. there's been some scientific research to suggest that consuming capiscum (the stuff that makes chillies hot) has certain anti-carcinogenic properties! i'm gonna carry on eating my vindaloos phals and tindaloos! but only once a week as so not to risk getting a stomach ulcer! ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: World's Hottest Curry From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 29 Apr 05 - 12:49 PM That's true about building up a tolerance. We had a guest who said she loved a good hot curry but we had moved far beyond her tolerance by that point. Then after we got 'curried out' we left off eating Indian foods for about a year. Going back to the same recipe was a bit of a shock. I hope 'phal' isn't an abbreviation ... |
