Will be somewhere down the bottom end of the T&M so will miss it

If we are diversifying, don't forget the Middlewich folk and Boat festival 17th to 19th June lots of music and boat related activities. There will no doubt be someauthentic Joshers in evidence. There is also a demonstration of horse boating techniques.

Just to use a boaty thread for something else: I have just been drafted in to help organise some apsects of the Stoke-on-Trent Canals Festival, which is currently scheduled for May 28/29..at the Etruria canal museum at the junction of the Trent and Mersey and the Caldon. It will be very music-friendly(though not primarily a music fest). More details later, but put it in the diary if interested.

I might suggest merrick and Dairy are the best o answer these queries since they live in Banbury - on a boat I recall!

Check them out on the mebers list.

I will look out for all those boats and owners listed here....

Mine is 67' not a josher bow and called Vigornia - teh Roman Name for Worcester, yes I live on it too!

It should eb inresidence in October at the Banbury folk festival and Canal day - anyone else making the journey?

Sadly it will not be in residence for cropredy - ah well can't have it all.

Let's be fair, Josher, lots of serious boaters deliberately refer to their narrow boats as "barges"(or even "gaily painted barges when they've had a couple of pints): this is in ironic reference to the fact that they know perfectly well they aren't barges, and are thereby laughing at those who who don't know that they aren't barges. Such are the multiple layers of English irony.

       Sorry about that!!! as a nerd in canals and canal boats I was unaware of the differance, I will correct myself by saying (We hired a boat and had no problems mooring during the festival that year) Having spoken to my other half he laughed and said It was deffinatly a narrowboat that we hired.Please forgive the bleb in me.

Thanks Joanna but I don't think you took a barge down the Oxford, because the definition of a barge is a boat on inland waterways which has a beam over 7ft. as the locks on the Oxford are only 7ft wide you must of travelled down the canal in a narrowboat. Sorry to be pedantic.

We did travel by canal barge back in 1997 and moored easily in Cropredy, had a lovely time, but dont know how mooring is now good luck.

Sadly my old boat (Quail) died a couple of years ago but I still have very fond memories. She was truly beautiful.

Incidentally she was a REAL Josher.

Dave - I seem to remember Panacea from my boating days. Have you had her long? Did she used to belong to a lady called Libby?

a 'Josher' was a design of boat made for and by the canal carrying company Fellows Morton and Clayton and the boatmen named it after Joshua Fellows one of the owners. a 'Josher' has very fine lines and distinctive bow with a double bend. Some of the modern builders make a very good job of replicating the design.

Thanks for all the advice hope to get to Cropredy on the Monday of the festival to make sure of a good spot.

During the 80s there would hve been no problem geting a mooring right by the festival. Don't know about now, but I think you'd be fairly sure of finding a space within a mile. Definitely the way to go.

All the locks on the Oxford canal are 70' by 7' so there should be no length problem unless you've got a 72' "large Woolwich". Anyway Josher said he'd brought his boat down the Oxford before.

I once moored up at Cropredy during the festival with no trouble, although "Panacea" was only 34'. You might have to moor some distance away or be willing to breast up though. If I remember correctly, the festival is on the west bank and the towpath on the other side, still there's plenty of bridges.

Is your boat actually an authentic "Josher" (for non-canalcolics, a design of boat named after Mr Wedgwood) ?

Sadly I don't own a full length boat, she's only 50ft so no probs. Have cruised the Oxford before but never attended the festival.
If I had a full length it would have a Gardner in it.

As an ex-Josher owner I think you should check the locks there. I have a vague memory they are quite short. I certainly couldn't get my 70 footer in there.

The path from the further camping field crosses the canal and boats do moor there. I don'tknow if there are any restrictions on the mooring at tat point though.
