Subject: Review: Old Songs: 2005, HOT!
From: DonMeixner
Date: 26 Jun 05 - 11:27 PM

From a business stand point, Old Songs for me was at best a break even event. I blame this on the incredible heat and humidity. I can't recall a hotter stretch of days, ever. But I don't do this show for the jewelry business. Thats an excuse to see friends and hear great music.

As far as seeing friends go it was just about as good as I can recall. I think most of the Mudcatters who were present dropped by Old Erie Crafters and said "Hello!" Even Midchuck ventured away from the compound.

It was especially nice to meet Rita and Kathy. Rita is a skilled crafter it turns out. And Kathy, or is it KT, is a world traveler. Maindog said hello and so did Burke and the Susans. Allan and his Sweetie stopped by to show me that a bracelet I made last year is firmly planted on a very nice wrist.

Time to sit and chat with Jeri was a giggle as always. The same must be said of BBC's visits as well.

It was just finest to see Kendall and Jacqui. Jacqui ordered some earrings and Kendall paid cash for them. Imagine that, cash.

I know I'm leaving out a lot of folks, Dick for instance, but I'm pretty tired.

The big wonder is, where was Tim and Vickie? And what about Mick Lane, he said he'd be there this year.

Don

I was there too, Don, remember? Yes, I know you do! But the heat really got to us all.

It was still a great weekend. I enjoyed seeing all the Mudcatters, but still missed a bunch- got a hug from KT but that's all, sat and chatted briefly with Jeri but never got to sing with her. Had a coupla chats with bbc, Kendall and Jacqui, the 'Chucks, esp. Kristine and Peter. Kept up pretty well at the "slow" jam led by George Wilson. Saw Dick and Susan, Sandy and Caroline, Karen K, Hollowfox, but yes, where were Vixen and Reynaud? Never saw Rita, and the elusive Ron Olesko is still elusive.

Other highlights were: high tea with Lynne Noel and co, meeting Alistair Brown, chatting with Barbara Benn, hearing an amazing array of singers and instrumentalists. And I walked away from a ukulele for sale- looks are deceiving, and I was given good advice not to buy it.

I got some decent pictures which I will post, but probably not till tomorrow (one more teacher workshop day today...).

It was fun to show off my new sweetie, too, who proved himself a trouper in spite of the heat. And my 16-year old kept a pretty good attitude most of the time, too.

Folks were saying that this was the hottest Old Songs ever. I believe it! But as always, it was a great one.

Allison

My sweat glands mutated into doing something akin to cellular division! Sitting or standing in the shade was of minimal relief even when the hot breeze blew because the humidity had gotten to "parity" at which point no sweat was evaporating.

Despite this, Carmen and I had a fabulous time. We got to see and briefly visit with a number of old friends. But "hello" hugs were almost out of the question because of the heat. Besides Animaterra and Don Meixner, we saw Sandy & Caroline, Karen K, Susan of DT, Dick Greenhaus, KT, Kendall & Jaqui, and caught glimpses of a few others from time to time. I think I may even have seen Vixen and Reynaud up near the front row of the main stage area on Friday night; but never saw them again after that.

There were more wonders there than you could shake a stick at, but our favorite event was the "How To Play the Blues" workshop given by Guy Davis. He imparted a huge amount of "how to" in 45 minutes. By the end of the workshop everyone there who had an instrument was playing blues rifts and sounding just grand!

This was Carmen's first time at Old Songs, but she assures me it won't be her last. She loved it!

See I told you all I was fried. Allison was a bout the first of the bunch I saw. And the Paton's and Hollowfox.

Dan Spooner was the find for show as far as I am concerned. Remember when you have a cradft booth at a show you don't get around much.

The big kick for me of the week end was one of my folk heros, John Roberts, stopped at the booth to look about. He said he had read in the Mudcat Forum how good my work was(Thanks you all) and had to come by and see it.

Among my ambitions for the weekend was to meet up with, as Animaterra described him, "the elusive Ron Olesko." I am certain that he and I have been in the same place at the same time at least three times and yet I've never yet met him.

I'm sure there were others I forgot to list above, but I certainly didn't mean to slight bbc.

As Carmen said to me on the way home, "We could have paid thousands to see the quality and quantity of performances we saw this weekend!" Luckily, we didn't need to do that. Old Songs is one of the best music bargains I've ever encountered. One of the best parts is the opportunity to see and sometimes even to converse with performers who, heretofore, were only names we had heard before. It gave us a new perspective on the music we have heard on their CD's.

Speaking of CD's, it is always a pleasure to boost our collection at one of these events. Buying the CD's of the performers just plain feels good. Not only does it give us an opportunity to hear these fine folks again, but it also gives us a sense of giving something back to the artists in exchange for their wonderful performances.

One glimpse of something that happened at a workshop:
Sandy and Caroline were discussing the history of Folk Legacy when an ignorant misfit (being kind here,) interrupted by arguing against the need, nay, even the validity of field recordings. He seemed to think that anything that wasn't multi-tracked, edited and tweaked wasn't worth a listen. He was so adamant in his attack on field recordings that I quite nearly wondered outloud why the hell he bothered to attend this particular workshop and why he didn't just get the hell out! I truly wish you could have seen the aplomb with which Sandy and Caroline dealt with this heckler. Even though I could see the fire in Sandy's eyes when he addressed this jerk, there was nothing in Sandy's words that was anything but reserved and polite. Caroline spoke more sweetly than almost anyone else might have done in such a circumstance. It was clearly a "pearls before swine" moment in which nothing could have been said to alter this guy's perception of what folk music was all about; but nonetheless, Sandy and Caroline presented dozens of reasons - with examples - of why field recordings should be as plain and unretouched as is possible. I think everyone at the workshop (except the jerk) was impressed with Sandy and Caroline's handling of the situation.

Frank and I made it to Old Songs and had a great time. We met Don Meixner at his booth (he and Frank got into an extended discussion of banjo parts, of course). Met Allan C and Carmen with Karen K at the picnic table near the Folk Legacy both (we were the ones eating the potato pancake and fried dough with strawberries). Met all the woodchucks at Kendall's camper. Met Jeri at the Bob Franke songwriting workshop (she was working on a tribute to Rick Fielding).

Chatted with Kendall and Jacqui when they arrived at our camper to visit at 9:30 am on Sunday morning! Frank sat there with great aplomb despite his bed hair, but I made them stand outside in the heat until I got out of the shower and threw on some clothes! Jacqui is a nice lady and the perfect foil for our dear Kendall.

Did NOT see Vicky & Tim. Did see NOMADman, Sandy & Caroline, BBC (glad that ticket exchange worked out with Robin) Dick & Susan and a few people at Kendall's camper who were mudcatters but whose names I don't recall. Asked one guy if he was Mainedog, but he denied it, saying he was from Vermont!

The music was wonderful, especially Ginny Hawker & Tracy Schwarz, Nightingale, the Lonesome Sisters, the shape note, John Whelan, those crazy Arrogant Worms (although once was enough), and the jams. I attended my first songwriter workshop (with Bob Franke) and went back the next day to Part 2 with a brand new song! However, I waited too long to raise my hand to do it in front of the group, and time ran out.

In fact, time ran out fast despite the heat and the dust and the mosquitos. It was a nice festival and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm sorry about seeming to be elusive, but I was still a bit under the weather and spent most of the weekend plopped in my lounge chair under the trees enjoying the music. Surprisingly the heat did not bother me, but the dust was wrecking havoc with my voice and my cough. I had to watch a few workshops from the back so I could sneak out if a coughing fit came upon me.

Still, the music and the festival turned out to be great medicine! I am feeling so good today!   The music was amazing.   One of my favorite moments was at the songs of personal conscience. Bob Franke did a powerful song about Fredya Epstein and the incident surrounding her death called "Collatoral Damage". When he finished, Priscilla Herdman burst into tears - just as it was her turn to sing. Priscilla went on to sing an incredible rendition of Pat Humphries "Swimming to the Other Side". She slowed it down and it was the perfect setting for the song.   Great workshop.

So many other moments - the various collaborations that Bruce Molsky took part in, Vanaver Caravan, Guy Davis, the Berrymans & Michael Cooney's workshop, the Vietnamese musicians whose names escape me at the moment, the Arrogant Worms, Sara Grey and so many others.

The Folk-Legacy workshop was wonderful, save for the incident that Allan mentioned. I happen to know the individual that made those unfortunate comments, and I was quite surprised at the things he said. I'd like to think he was just not articulating properly, but he kept putting his foot further into his mouth which makes it difficult to accept that it was just a misunderstanding. It amazes me because this individual is a good musican and one of the guiding lights for a coffeehouse here in New Jersey, and it shocked me that he did not comprehend the power and importance of field recordings. How can someone with his experience not hear the beauty? I guess it comes down to the fact that many people became aware of "folk" music during the seven year period that began with the Kingston Trio topping the charts with "Tom Dooley" and ended with Dylan going electric at Newport. These are people that are used to fine studio recordings and staged performances.   Sandy and Caroline handled him well and I think Sandy put him in his place.

Another great weekend.   So how many days until next year???

Workshops that I wound up attending were based, for the most part, on 1) what I DIDN'T want to go to (avoidance), and 2) my current location (inertia). I was miserable (headache, no sleep, hot, and a significant amount of whining) right up until Mrs. Chuck (Kris) gave me some ibuprofen on Saturday morning, so I missed the Folk Legacy workshop.

Allan C, I didn't even know you and Carmen C were there!
I spent time with all of the other folk that other folks mentioned. Ron Olesko remains a mystery to me, but I crashed early both nights. I also visited with georgeward.

I think there should be a folkie workout video to prepare us aging semi-sedentary types for festival season.

Had another car issue on the way home, but that's becoming routine. At least I made it home. Now I shall have to take my relaxation day to get the thing fixed.

Well, er, um,...It's nice to know we were missed, and missing Old Songs is its own punishment, for sure. Having returned from the Middlewich festival on 23 June, and after playing a gig on 25 June, were just plain pooped from jetlag, heat, and humidity. We were there in spirit, jamming on our porch in between naps, and wondering how the festival was going. Reynaud missed the instrument swap. I missed trying to win another Taylor (which Mudcat won one this year?) Most of all, we both missed getting to see everyone.

Hopefully we'll catch up with people as the summer progresses!

What a great weekend, in spite of the heat. (Our thermometer measured 96 in the shade until Kris put it in the cool box, when it went down to a more manageable 85.

We were stationed in Mudcat International HQ (the motorhome) and had lots of 'Catters come visit. I'm not even going to try and name everyone, but I think that Heartfrog got to cuddle with all the ladies and photos will be forthcoming.

Because of the heat we didn't move around much but did get to the Patons' workshop, which was thoroughly enjoyable bar that one problem. Don actually made me a pair of earrings to order at the festival and they are beautiful. I keep looking at those bracelets and wondering how many I could get away with wearing at one time......

Barbara Benn travelled to and from Old Songs with us and I can say that it would be difficult to find a more pleasant and considerate travelling companion. She's a great lady to talk to and made sure that she was ready to fit in to our schedule without any problem.

We're hoping next year to have a bigger rig, with AC working so that, if the heat or the @%#$^& mosquitoes are as vicious again we can invite visitors inside. I'm still scratching madly at the numerous bites the little monsters delivered.

I agree w/ all who said the heat & humidity were a bit of a trial, but I wouldn't have missed the 25th Old Songs for anything. This was the first Old Songs I had ever attended that it didn't rain! I met several folks attending for the 1st time & there was a goodly number of younger folks. Other than reuniting w/ old friends, the highlights for me were shape note singing, the "Meet Guy Davis" session, & hearing a song by Shelley Posen called "The Old Songs Home" performed on the main stage by Bill Spence & Fennig's All-Stars. It's a whimsical explanation of where songs go when they're forgotten. Sandy & Caroline (w/ their sons, David & Rob, & their granddaughter Linnea were the second to last to perform Sunday afternoon on the main stage (Bob Franke did a nice job closing). They ended their set w/ "All the Good People" & "Handful of Songs." Although "Handful of Songs" is by our Jerry Rasmussen & I've loved it since I first hearing, all I could think of on this time was Rick Fielding & I cried through the whole thing. I still can't listen to Rick's recordings since his passing. He would have loved Old Songs, I think.

Ron, it seems that you & I were in various sessions together (BTW, there were too many good ones scheduled against each other!). I was just in front of the unnamed NJ folkie in the Folk Legacy session. I was surprised at his comments, too, but not at the grace & conviction w/ which Sandy & Caroline met them. Area 2, behind the crafters, was the hottest spot, I think, but had some truly wonderful sessions, such as the songs of conscience that you mentioned & one on protest that included the Patons.

People I saw: Animaterra, Don Meixner & his sweet wife Cynthia, dick greenhaus & Susan of DT, Sandy & Caroline Paton, karen k, Jeri, Allan C. & very nice to meet his sweetheart edelweiss, kendell & Jacqui c. (She got a photo of me w/ heartfrog!), Barbara Shaw & Frank, Hollowfox, georgeward (always a pleasure), Susan A-R & friend down from Vermont, delighted that Ferrarra was able to make it up from the D.C. area but I sure wish Bill D. had seen fit to accompany her. Hope I didn't miss anyone; easy to do w/ heat stroke! Folks from past Old Songs who I wished had been there this year: bill/sables, Charlie Baum, Dennis & Judy Cook, Barry Finn, dharmabum, Vixen & Reynaud. You were missed! How about next year for the 26th annual Old Songs Festival?

sweaty hugs & salty kisses,

bbc

Somewhere there has to be a compromise between roasting and freezing. What is the geographic midpoint between Maryland and New York?

I wish I could have gone to Old Songs but I have to say that the heat would have laid me low. I'd rather freeze.

I would love to have met - and re-met - everybody. There are so many 'Catters I want to meet...

Now I'm waiting for photos!

As usual, I spent most of my time talking to or picking with dear friends. There was some great music from the stages, but there was also a lot of yelling on key. Also, Mr. Sandman probably qualifies as an "Old song" but it doesn't fit my picture of the festival.

I'm not even going to mention by name anyone in particular because there were just too many to name.
All in all, it was a hell of a good time, even though the temperature was about 60 degrees warmer than I like.

I love hot weather and I did not think it was so bad at Old Songs.   The Philadelphia Folk Fest can be brutal because of the lack of trees. At least there is shade at Old Songs, and detected a cool breeze on occaison.   The dust was more problematic for me, but it wasn't too bad either.

I would rather sweat than freeze. Keep the temp above 80 for me!!!

114° is 1° above what the COLD water temperature in Kuwait was. The thing is, I've gotten to really like it when it's hot (if there's cold water available), but even though I don't have air conditioning at home, it takes me a while to get acclimatized to a 24-hour heat. I was doing pretty well on Sunday physically, but mentally, just wanted a nice comfy chair and something with ice in it - in a real glass and not costing $5. (Except I love the fresh lemonade and I didn't get any of it this year.)

Ron, Mr Ron "just sittin' in the breeze under the trees, stayin in a motel, bein' mysterious" Olesko: I am going to undertake pre-festival conditioning next year and hunt you down and SAY HELLO! I may even DO a festival condition video myself and becom folkdom's answer to Jane Fonda... a flabbier, uglier, folkier Fonda, but I'll be meaner.

Alright, all you winterized wimps, get off your butts and into some decent excercise clothing. You women, you're gonna want a folkie mu-mu - NO! Not one of those things - it has to be tie-died, and you have to either make it yourself or spend $50 on it. Get those bras off, you wimps. Now you guys, find some loose fitting clothing. Hey you in the $70 15-pocket, urban commando shorts and the little aligator shirt, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TRYIN' TO PULL HERE?!   See Big Bob, the guy just gettin' off that Harley-Davidson? Right. I think somebody still sells those nice, gauzy "stick" skirts. Call 'em kilts if it makes ya feel better. You probably don't want to wear 'em ridin' around on your motorsickle though...

Actually, I'm not that good at this. Some Morris side ought to put out a video for flabokies. They have 'Tai-Bo', why not 'Morrisizing'? 'Hankie-Mania'? 'Bells of Steel'? Not that it has anything to do with an excercise video, but I wonder if there are any hip-hop morris sides.

Ron, the asphalt was diagonally across the infield from the main stage area, in between the track and where my tent was. I could have had myself delivered to the concert area by UPS faster than I could walk there, and I'm pretty sure ol' "Brown" is air conditioned. The bathrooms were less than 50 yards away and the FREE showers were practically next door. They also attracted lots and lots of friendly people... so nice to wake up to the sound of a bunch of folks chatting in a neighborly fashion, warmly chastising their children with endearances such as, "Sweetie, if you don't stop trying to squash your baby brother with that bycicle of yours, you can just FORGET ABOUT TOFU PIZZA FOR LUNCH," and laughing like a bunch of crazed hyenas on crack. Nevertheless, there were showers and they were free.

Barbara, thanks for the great photos! Jake the signer is great to watch. When he gets going on a beautiful song, his hands just dance it. One thing I'll say though is ...Worms, love 'em or hate 'em, when they're there, you know it. They seemed to enjoy Jake's signing as well, and even picked one up and included it in their song. I think it was the sign for 'dickhead'. Jake was probably doing something more polite, but as I don't know ASL, I couldn't say.

On the serious side, I heard pretty much the same thing as Barbara regarding John Roberts. I wondered where he was when he wasn't MC-ing Saturday nigh. Sunday, I found out he'd had a rapid heartbeat and some other problems and went to the First Aid tent, and they shipped him off to the hospital. (The one in which I was born.) They admitted him for tests.

A note forwarded from Cindy Mangsen was just posted on the Folk-DJ website -
< The latest word is that John's having open-heart surgery on Thursday.
Serious blockages in several big arteries. It's a good thing they got him in when they did.
I talked to Robyn Boyd [John’s agent], and she says the prognosis is very good. He's probably had some small heart attacks and not realized it. Apparently one artery is totally blocked, another is 80% blocked ... so when he comes through this, he's probably going to feel a WHOLE lot better than he's felt in years.

And (this is the REALLY good news) he just got insurance (for the first time) last year, so he's covered. Whew. We could not have held enough benefits to cover the costs, I'm sure!>>

I'm sure it goes without saying that all our thoughts and prayers are with John.

A signer at a folk festival? How many totally deaf people go to a music festival? That's about the same as a blind person going to see a porno movie. Seriously, does this festival attract so many deaf people that they really need to have a signer?

Well, guest, if you attended the festival I imagine you'd note that we have an area set aside for people with various physical challenges. And we do have attendees who are hearing-impaired. There aren't a lot. But we have a lot going on beside the concerts. We do try to reach out.

Beyond that, Jake Thomas, the signer since 1992, is a hell of an artist in his own right. He has become part of the experience for a lot of us with normal hearing. And he does the festival because he enjoys coming to it.

And then there's the dimension Jeri mentions. He translates on the fly. So how do you sign "Ida Red", or things more complex or lurid ? We've had some great artist-signer moments over the years.

And it helps make us all more aware.

- George

Don...oops!
The Meixners let me park my posterior in their booth for a bit on Saturday AND Don made me a gin & tonic. The drink was perfect, the chair was fine. The problem was I felt like I should get out of it eventually. Thanks Don & Cindi!

I was really too fried to do everything I wanted to, so I guess I'll have to try again next year.
It was good to meet some catters new to me and to see some old friends again.
When I got back to Maine, Monday nite, it was 55 and foggy, so I soon woke up and rejoined the real world.

I just put my pictures here:
Old Songs 2005

Not all of them pertain to Mudcatters, and I missed a bunch of good people. But there are some fun ones!

Allison, thanks! I've I'd known you were taking my picture, I would have tried to look thinner and less sweaty!

"Cool Dude" is Fode Sissoko, who is a masterful musician, an incredible teacher and a really nice guy. Once in a while, you run into a person who loves music THAT much, is THAT good at it and loves sharing the knowledge. I got pulled into his drumming workshop, stayed for the whole thing (playing my lap) and it was amazing. All that, and he can walk on stilts too...who knew?

I felt like I saw folks very briefly. Partly because I was in a restless state of mind, and partly because I had to keep moving in order to not be eaten by bugs. I did a lot of dancing, fiddling and listening. loved the Songs of Conviviality, Barrymans and Michael Cooney, Twa, Guy Davis and Nightingale in particular. I was sorry not to hear more of Danny Spooner (why was he always on at the same time as Twa and Nightingale?)
and often wished that I could be three or four places at once.

Got a lovely pair of spiral earrings from Don and enjoyed hearing about his beautiful and curious designs. Saw lots of folks very briefly, sweated off about 10 lbs and had a great time in general.

I'm so glad that this has become an annual event for my friend Pam and me. The ride down and back is our main catch up time for the entire year (aside from a breakfast date or two) Hard to believe we used to sing together about once or twice a week. We are going to try to start that up again. A product of the long visits on the ride there and back.

Well, off to play fiddle.

I JUST got home this afternoon, and had to check in here with the mudcat family.

OLD SONGS!  What a great festival!! It was so good to see so many folks from last year's GETAWAY, and meet several new ones, too. I was so surprised that despite the numbers of people attending, I ran into someone I knew at every turn.  So many mini-reunions...all of which were WAY too short, but very much appreciated none-the-less.

So many wonderful performances, workshops, and jam sessions, it was difficult to choose......

I found myself having to move about in search of the occasional breeze, and it wasn't until Sunday that I discovered that stepping under a faucet every 30 minutes was a great way to beat the heat!

Georgeward, great words about the signer. I loved watching him and have great appreciation for the gift he brings to us all with the grace of his hands. Interpreting music on the spot is no easy task and demands incredible focus. He was fabulous.

We had to hit the road before the end of the concert on Sunday as we had many miles to go before we got to our next campsite where the temperatures continued in the high 90's. (as they did for the next several days.)

On the way home, I stopped in at Fiddle Tunes.   WOW!!   But that's another thread!!

Kendall, and Jacqui, it was WAY too short. We'll have to make up for lost time at the GETAWAY. Thanks for your kind hospitality at Mudcat International.

Karen K., it was great chatting with you. I hope to see you in the fall. Rita, it was too brief, but great to see your smiling face!   Allan C. and Carmen, Dick and Susan, and Susan A-R, great to see you again, too.

Don, it was so nice to meet you and Cynthia. Great to meet all you 'Chucks, too, and it was fun sharing some music with you!   Hollowfox , Animaterra, bbc, Sandy and Caroline, Maine Dog, I'm so glad to have met you and look forward to getting better acquainted next time.  Jeri! Great seeing you, too, even if it was just for a few minutes. I don't know what you do in the real world, Jeri, but I sure hope you're working on a book! It would be a top seller!

CARLY! I looked for you later and couldn't find you! What a delightful surprise to run into you at that workshop, though! We'll catch up at the GETAWAY, I hope.

What a great time! SIgh........
See you all down the road!!

KT
