As you may already know the RUNSWICK BAY "DO" is not far off, just 7 weeks to go to one of the best nights in folk music.

To be held at Milnsbridge Socialist Club, Bankwell Road, Milnsbridge, Huddersfield HD3 on SATURDAY 11th March 2006 from 8.00pm, a free and easy session, sing or play from where you sit and over the years we've been graced with some wonderful nights and wonderful singers. I'm going to make the misjudgement of naming some and hope that I don't upset those I miss. Musicians have included Peter Bond, Copper Kettle, Duncan McFarlane, Jim McDonald, Malcom Moger (stunning Guitar/Banjo from Leek)and many many others, hopefully this year it will include Mick McGarry from the legendary Punch the Horse and Flamenco Ted.

As well as singing and playing we also have a raffle, collection and supper, for which a small charge of £1.50 is levied (although you can donate more!) and all funds go to the Rescue Boat which as many of you will know is not sponsored by the RNLI. (Registered Charity 1014544)

If you intend to join us I would be very grateful if you could let us know so we know how many to cater for, how much extra beer to buy in and if we will require extra bar staff to ensure you all get served quickly.

The past two years have been almost full to capacity although we can always squeeze one more in, so drop us a line and let us know if you are coming

Nick ...have not managed to see you since I found this poem and adapted it for singing. It is based on a true story of an event that happened in 1901.

THE RUNSWICK WOMEN

The little cliff-side village in sleepy stillness lay
When the fishing boats, at daybreak, set sail from Runswick Bay
And many a stalwart fisherman, with ne'er a thought for fear
Prayed "Grant us Lord, a safe return to wife and children dear!"

CHORUS
"God keep our sons and husbands
And bring them safely home !"
That was the prayer the Runswick women
Sent o'er the ocean foam

But soon the wind was rising, the sky was overcast
The heavy clouds hung dark and low, the rain fell thick and fast
And from the cottage windows throughout the weary day
The women looked , with anxious eyes, out on the stormy bay

Then as the shades of evening fell o'er the raging foam
They saw, far out across the sea, the boats returning home
The men were striving vainly gainst angry wind and wave
While the women watched in anguish all powerless to save

"Can we do nought to save them ?" Rang out in accents wild
Must they be lost in sight of home, In sight of wife and child?
We must launch the lifeboat and save our husbands lives
Hands may be weak but hearts are strong for we are sailors wives

Bravely those women laboured , the fishermen to save
They dragged the lifeboat to the beach and launched it on the wave
The women and the young boys rowed through the tempest's roar
And old men mustered all their strength as they bent to the oar

Regardless of the perils that little vessel braved
At length the fishing boats were reached and every man was saved
All honour to those women - true heroines were they
The fisherwives who launched the boat that night at Runswick Bay

I found the poem in a book full of verse about Lifeboats.

THE LIFEBOAT IN VERSE (an anthology covering 100 years)
first published in 1938.

It says 'How the Women Launched the Lifeboat' - (the original title) - was reproduced from the November 1901 issue of The Toilers of the Deep, the organ of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and in The Life-boat of Ist November 1901, Vol XVIII p274. The author Miss Bailey, who wrote the verse at Dalston, died in 1936.

I have been told that the women involved were invited to London as guests of the Queen.

There is already a lifeboat song titled 1901 which, based on a true story, recounts an act of bravery by the lifeboat men of the Caistor coast, just North of Yarmouth. Unfortunately this song ends with 9 of the 12 lifeboat men being drowned after being called out on a terrible night and never actually finding the boat that they went out to rescue. There were probably many a lifeboat called out that night.

I learned it a few years ago but, I don't know why, I have only ever sung it out once but it has a good chorus "Roll away Roll away, you stormy sea's so black, roll away, roll away, for brave boys never turn back".

Still hoping I can make it with Duncan & Audrey Nick, so maybe I'll get a chance to sing it out for a second time.

a note for a guest, the song "teaching me worm how to swim" was written by the late "suicide" Bill Newton as was "Thank God it's Friday" and "The Bird Shit song " amongst others like "The knackered shock absorber waltz". Bill died of cancer some years ago, he did al1 sorts of dangerous sports and expressed a desire to die persuing one of his dangerous sports, I think it was Bill Fordy at the Ayton Folk Club christened him "suicide", his death then was ironic. Graham Lockwood did video him singing in the the Everly in Forge Valley, I have pestered the life out him to get it edited and make it available to everyone. We all miss his humour and his somerset drawl.

i am trying to locate some of his tapes, I borrowed Maggie Fordy's and lent them to Steve Thompson and he can't find them. Locky is on the case, don't tell Maggie I lost them or shell twist my yukkas off. They were recorded in a local studio (Scarborough) by John(?) Neaves. Arthur Marsden (weaverthorpe) will probably have a full set. If anyone wants a set PM me and I will keep you updated as soon as have located a source.

Ted, as you know I lived in Yorkshire, although I hail from God's county over the border. After 23 years of missionary work I have to admit I have not been able to introduce much in the way of class and culture to the natives, perhaps your flamenco may appeal to them, but fear not I have a large supply of glass beads and trinkets that seem to placate them.

As for the border I moved the signs several years ago to claim this area for Lancashire, nobody here noticed but some vigliantes from Lancashire moved them back saying they didn't want this part of Yorkshire thank-you very much

Ted, fear not you will not be leaving Yorkshire, Milnsbridge although close to the border still lies within the West Riding. As I intimated in an earlier contribution I did actually move the Lancashire boundary signs so that Milnsbridge and in fact vast tracts of the West Riding were ceded to Lancashire and said that no-body here noticed at the time but in fact some activists from Lancashire moved the bloody things back saying they wanted no part of this part of Yorkshire Thank-you very much.
As for finance, come on my pretty anyone who can buy a cathedral must have a bob or two to spare for a Rescue Boat in YORKSHIRE

Yet another great night, full room and much diverse music, some trad, some modern, some flamingo, some Irish, some blue grass and some plain daft. I hope I can say everyone had a good night, we started about 7.40 and finished up approaching 2am !!
The bonus is that we raised £500 (Five hundred pounds) for the Rescue Boat a fabulous sum of money with one or two more donations promised in addition.
I would like to say a HUGE thank you to who came and played and sing and helped create a great night.
Finally a big thank you to Soldier Boy, the Bodhran he donated auctioned for £60 the only down side of that is the new owner is coming on holiday with me to Ireland shortly and is taking it with them !!

A goon night out with a great mix of different songs and styles of music. The songs that were sung by the guy from Staffordshire were great fun. Must find and learn. Anybody got any clues? Don't know why I didn't ask on the night.

I have received a letter from the Secretary of the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat which reads as follows:-

"Dear Nick & Christine

Andrew (the treasurer) has informed me that he has received a wonderfully generous cheque of £510 from your fund raising at the Milnsbridge Socialist Club. Please will you pass on to all concerned our great thanks for the generousity and hard work of all you friends. I know that most of those involved travlled a great distance before even beginning. I would particularly grateful if you would give special thanks to Chris Carter for the donation of his Bodhran, Eddie and Maureen who sent a cheque for 325 even though they didn't attaend and Deidre Speed who sent £10 after reading your web blog. It is all truly amazing! We are trying to build funds currently for a new boat, so your cheque was especially welcome.
Please will you keep me informed of your gig in Glaisdale in the summer.We would like to attend if possible.

I am also pleased to relate that one of the ladies who frequents the Socialist club asked for donations instead of presents for a big birthday party she held at the club, have the monies to Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield and half to the Rescue Boat, she then gave me a cheque for £200 !! This together with a further cheque I had received for £10 was sent to the treasurer last week making a total so far this year of £720, a fabulous amount.
