Don't know what it's like where you are but the bloody summer seems well and truely over from where I am sitting. Put the lights on in living room tonight at 8.20. Forecast for rest of week is very heavy rain and not getting above 15 degrees. Oil fired central heating got the switch too today. So on that bright note from the North of Ireland I will go and find a sweatshirt !

North Norfolk here. Temp hasn't fallen below 14 at night over the last week or so. I hadn't reset the thermometer in a week or more so I don't know what the temp has got up over the last couple of days - it will be a fair bit lower than the 26 it shows.

Inside haven't been aware of the house heating (set at 18) coming on yet.

I think living room lights were switched on about 7:30pm today. One thing I have noticed is that even though it's not really a great distance, it stays light longer in N Wales where I lived before. When we talk to my brother who still lives that way, the difference seems to be somewhere around an hour, maybe a bit more.

Divis,

I lived 15 miles south of the Arctic Circle for two years. Night lasted for about three months, and day lasted for about three months. The other six months were a bit of both. You have my sympathy. (I used to put tinfoil on the windows, figuriung the turkey could take care of itself in the oven.) Summers were hot and the heat just wouldn't go away. During the day, the sun shone and the rock just soaked up the heat. Then during night--or what would have been night if it wasn't just more day--the heat kinda stayed near the rock. Of course, Nature made up for that with winters that gave us temperatures of 50 below zero at night that warmed up to 35 below zero during the day--or what would have been day if . . . .

Peace that seems so hard to imagine, and here's me moaning about a few hours ! It's just we had such a great run here for about six weeks and I love the heat and long evenings.

It must be getting cooler, I had a kitty duvet last night - and one of them wasn't even our cat!

Ah well...Winter draws on.

We lit our fire for the first time tonight, and the whippets are demanding new coats and the right to sleep with us in our bed....clearly the beginning of the end!
Regards,
Myrtle.

Re cats: 2 of our 3 have been choosing to spend a lot more time indoors lately but I think that has been more to do with wet weather.

The 3rd, Bella, is just plain weird (like all our cats, she was found as a stray kitten - perhaps something happened before she found us or perhaps it's a bit of a feral instinct that's stuck with her...) and can change from being to scared to be with or approached by any of us to rolling over and being made a fuss of for no apparent reason... She is usualy eventualy persuaded in at night after a bit of coaxing and bribery and will settle in my parents bed room.

Down Under there is warmth in the sun at last. There are buds on just about everything, another week or two and it will all be springing into life. My sympathies to you in the north. It has been a very mild winter here, and I personally am expecting a very hot dry bushfire summer.

Here in the southeast USA we are having a cool snap--temps under 88 F. during the day. August is usually our hottest, driest month. (but it isn't anything as hot as down in Texas where SRS lives.) It is the shorter day-lengths, and not cooler temps that tell fall flowers to start to bud, and herald in the beginning of the fall garden season.

Hope you have a delightful spring Down Under, John. Maybe it won't be as dry as you fear. It wasn't here, I was pleasantly surprised to experience.

Janie

Our days in Juneau Alaska are shortening visibly (pun intended) these days- we're already losing almost 1/2 hour of daylight each week. As a friend said the other day, Hard to realize that four months from now our days will already be getting longer.

I haven't heard about any record breakers but we've had a chilly, very wet summer. Rain is usual in this temperate rain forest but this year we've had precious few clear, sunny days, and none at all for the last few weeks. A couple of times we've had a nice morning but by afternoon it was raining again. Normally we have wet weather for a week or two then it breaks and we have three or four warm, sunny days.

I don't know that it's official but it definitely feels like fall rains.

"In Autumn the storms return; dark clouds are in the sky.
Wind strips leaves from all the trees and sends them flying high
Galoshes slosh and waters rush. A familiar refrain:
In Southeast Alaska it's raining. Again."

It has been a very mild winter here

John O'L, what part of Oz are you in? I'm in Sydney, and we've all been commenting here that it has been one of our colder ones - certainly compared with last year which was particularly mild!

I see we have some days of 22 and 23 predicted, so it is gradually warming up. I like these in-between seasons, when it's not too hot or too cold, and I'm certainly looking forward to the days getting longer. My garden looks ready to burst forth, but isn't quite there yet. The buds are sitting waiting on the nectarine tree, and all the little red almost-flowers on the jasmine are still closed. There are signs of freezias popping up in the front lawn, but so far only the leaves. I'd say a week or two more will do it!

Agreed, Jenny. I can't smell spring yet - you know that indefinable floral whiff that tells you that winter is nearly over?

Cheers

The official report was that we got a "cold snap" yesterday. The day before, we had a high of 97 F (36.1 C) but yesterday it only got to 88 F (31.1 C) for a high temp (the "official weatherman" said). Personally I couldn't tell much difference, since the 97 F was accompanied by 82% RH, but the 88 F was at 95+% RH. Wind chill wasn't doing much for us either day.

It seems to be a little later cooling off this year, but we probably can expect a fairly rapid drop over the next couple of weeks. Quite likely we'll have localized heavy rain, widely scattered hail, and our usual fairly brief period of autumn tornado hits until sometime near the end of September or beginning of October.

I think I must be unusual but I side with CH on this one!

I adore the winter. Yeah, ok, I know all the down parts of it, but there are so many good things too. Here's just a few and I'm sure you could add to the list:

1    It's a very 'cuddly' season, even our dog gets more affectionate (if that's possible).

2    It's easier to get warm when you're cold than cool when you're too hot.

3    I love those wintery moments, enjoying the simple things, like eating hot buttered toast nuggled up together.

4    Getting in from a cold, crisp walk and enjoying a lovely hot drink and getting warm again.

5    And of course, at the beginning of winter we have the best time of year - Christmas/Winter Soltice.

Come on Catters - add to this list.

Rhiannon

Heating Oil prices going through the roof as they know we can't do without it.

Sliding on my back end off my motorbike on ice covered roads.

Searching the street to find the mat at your front door which went airbourne during the night.

Two long haired cats coming in soaking and jumping onto the bed.

Television companies subjecting us to the worst drama they can find.

And please don't start me about Christmas.

Sorry Rhiannon if I sound negative, but Summer has a lot more going for it.
Best wishes
DS

A number of years ago, Huntington Beach, California was rated as the best climate in the USA.....I'd be tempted, but the prices there are rated about as high.

I enjoy a good sweat. I love the heat. I dread the thoughts of the cold weather. I do not care for bundles of clothes, short days, snow, ice, lack of green, etc.

It's not over yet!!   Last year, the warm weather stayed with us into October. The trees were still holding their leaves past Halloween here in New Jersey. I remember wearing short sleeves into early November.   The days may becoming shorter, but the summer is still here and it will be with us for awhile! Enjoy the day!!!

Well Divis at least you can ride your Motorbike in the Winter even if there is a chance of skidding off onto your ar........
My Trumph will have to go into hibernation till Spring once the snow and ice arrives...sob.
As for the Summer passing. Well now that I am living in the Northern US I have to say I really don't enjoy the whole Summer season they way I used to. Between the Humidity and the unbearable heat some days not to mention the F'in Mosquitoes by the time the middle of August comes around and the nights start to draw in I am about ready for a break ( I also do not Tan well but I sunrash wonderfully however..lol)
I like Spring, Fall and Winter. I just spent some of my day restacking my Log shed in anticipation of needing to get the Wood stove and Fireplace into action soon:)
Just think Divis you will be in the House more so that means more time for the Mudcat...now that's an exciting Winter thought...eh!!!

Warmest (literally) wishes, as always, to You and Yours
Jude

Dunno about your winter, JennyO, here I have the fan on!

Winter for me in central Sydney (close to the Harbour) is 85% down quilt at night with electric blanket on till I get into bed. Nights I wear a tracksuit & medium fleecy vest, days I wear silk or cotton long-sleeved shirts with similar fleece vest over & knee-high socks under mid calf cotton skirt, & sometimes wear a medium fleece jacket. And my old blower heater hasn't been out of the cupboard for years.

And it's not just my thyroid acting up (thanks for fanning me continually that night my heart was racing!) but inner Sydney is warmer than your far distant suburb (well, 10 km is far away for an inner city bird like me!!)

As my brother said 25 years ago when he was in London, I couldn't cope with that winter! And I certainly couldn't cope with Sydney suburban winter, either. Nor would I want to meet a Canadian winter.

Sandra, while it's true that the winter nights in the Sydney city area can be 4 or 5 degrees warmer than in the Canterbury area, with an even greater difference in the outer western suburbs where they get below zero sometimes with frosts, generally this has been a colder winter than the last few.

The end is in sight though. 24 degrees predicted for tomorrow - positively balmy! Also I spotted the very first jasmine flower open today. It's all about to start - yay!

Jude, I will use the hacker more in the Winter a 1982 BMW R80RT. We get so much salt on the roads here. Now saying that I can spend more time on mudcat isn't exactly what some members will want to hear !

Safe driving my friend and regards to all at that end.
